2 } – Iowa State wrestler David Carr talks George Floyd protests, Black Lives Matter, USA Wrestling, more
AMES, Ia. — Over the last week, David Carr stood at the Iowa State Capitol and on the streets in Minneapolis. He wore a black mask to shield himself from a global pandemic and held up a sign in the hopes of curing a different kind of illness. “I got a few friends together and we went to protest in Des Moines,” said Carr, the star sophomore on the Iowa State wrestling team. “It was a very peaceful protest. I was surprised at how many people were there. “I had talked to (Minnesota heavyweight) Gable Steveson, and he was telling me how crazy it was in Minneapolis. I really wanted to check it out and see what it was like, and it was an amazing experience. Being around that changed me a lot.” … rest of story at https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/iowa-state/wrestling/2020/06/13/iowa-state-wrestler-david-carr-talks-george-floyd-protests-black-lives-matter-usa-wrestling-more/3175325001/?mc_cid=f75b9fce50&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – Fatherly Influence: ‘He’s my ultimate role model’
We know wrestling coaches for their accolades as competitors, the skills they pass along and the achievements of their athletes. But what about their feats as fathers?
For Father’s Day, Nick Corey reached out to several sons and daughters of prominent wrestling coaches to learn more about their influence as fathers.
Here are their responses:
Tommy Brands (son of Iowa coach Tom Brands): “Being my dad’s son, me being a wrestler is something a lot of people thought was (a given). Eventually, I really liked cross country and even had some success, but after (experiencing theater) in ninth grade, that became my passion. My dad supported me. “My dad and I have had differences, like many sons and dads, but he has always been behind me. He’s one of the smartest people I know. He knows things intuitively. A lot of people don’t know that, they think his knowledge is just over wrestling things.  “The biggest thing in our relationship is that we understand each other. It’s not direct compatibility because we do have different interests and opinions about things, but I’ve never doubted how blessed I am, being his son. “Last summer he had to go to New York … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1592779418564&twSessionId=hyxciqaxaq&postId=783192135&mc_cid=73ac0bc782&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – The dynamic nature of wrestling is what makes it different from other sports
Is the wrestling mind different from other sports?
Dr. Bill Allyson, a sports psychologist from Minnesota, answers with a qualified no.+ Allyson works with performers in athletics, medicine, acting, music, academics, and other fields whose desire is to sustain performance at the highest level. His experience says that successful people (not just athletes) have similar psychological traits. The games we play within our heads are the same, but successful people have mastered, psychologically, a specific area. Different demands require different levels of skill. And that is how wrestling is different from other sports. There is no dynamic interaction in golf, running, and swimming. It is up to the individual to perform on his or her own. Wrestling is dynamic. A wrestler has to deal, dynamically, with what the other wrestler is doing if he or she is going to compete with his or her opponent or, ultimately, defeat his or her opponent. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1591925712097&twSessionId=ffjpvzovff&postId=782736135&mc_cid=d457d68b82&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – Ty Walz: My Wrestling Hero
The 72nd installment of My Wrestling Hero features Ty Walz. The 2017 U23 World bronze medalist and Virginia Tech assistant shares his thoughts on his wrestling hero: Stephen Neal.
These are Walz’s words on his wrestling hero: “I didn’t really hit my stride with wrestling until I was going into the summer of my sophomore year of high school when I was kind of at a crossroads where I was like, ‘Do I really like wrestling? It’s hard. I think football might be the route I go.’ I was kind of at that point, but the U.S. Open came to Cleveland that year and I was able to watch some high-level wrestling there and kind of got interested in it. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1594003922217&twSessionId=pkzryesrky&postId=784086135&mc_cid=e9f57db17d&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

In an effort to address the challenges of returning to high school athletics and activities amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Learning Center has collaborated with the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) to develop a new free online course “COVID-19 for Coaches and Administrators.” The course includes information from the “Guidance for Opening Up High School Athletics and Activities” document that was released by the NFHS in May for its 51 member state high school associations to consider in restarting high school athletics and other activity programs across the nation. 9} – Non-revenue sports fret over college athlete compensation
College coaches in non-revenue sports are worried about the impact legislation allowing compensation for athletes could have on their programs. More than a dozen national associations in various sports – hockey, soccer, tennis, golf, swimming and gymnastics, among them – have signed a memo outlining “significant concerns” about effects of allowing athletes to profit for use of their names, images and likenesses (NIL). The concerns include reduced resources for lower-profile programs, the risk of “crowdfunded recruiting” for boosters to “buy talent” for a competitive advantage, increased influence by agents and whether schools can effectively monitor for compliance.
The memo, prepared by North Carolina athletics director Bubba Cunningham and associate athletics director Paul Pogge, was sent last week to a law committee examining whether to craft a standardized athlete-compensation law for states to adopt. The memo focuses on non-revenue sports, many of which are included in Olympic competition. … rest of story at https://www.carolinacoastonline.com/regional/article_97fc2c26-a433-11ea-be56-afbd77e9f53a.html
