1 } – The Doyles: A Family Dedicated to O.V. Wrestling
WHEELING — When wrestling enthusiasts talk about the mat sport at Wheeling Central, the first names that come to mind are the Doyle brothers: Pat, Mike, Matt, and Danny. In fact, they and family members have been involved in wrestling from the 1960s until this very day – in one capacity or another. Pat Doyle
The Doyle wrestling tradition began with the eldest brother, Pat Doyle. As a Maroon Knight wrestler, Pat was the All-City Champion. He also placed 4th in the prestigious Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Tournament. He then wrestled one year at his college alma mater, Bethany College. But this is only the beginning. Doyle began his coaching stint on the mats as an assistant wrestling coach under Tom Hogan, CCHS Athletic Hall of Famer. Coach Hogan taught him that desire and conditioning are key components to achieving in sports.
Doyle spent the majority of his career in education coaching wrestling at the youth, middle school, and the high school levels: Greater Wheeling Small Fry Wrestling League, Marshall County Youth Wrestling Association, Wheeling Middle School, and Wheeling Park High School. … rest of story at https://www.theintelligencer.net/sports/top-sports/2020/07/the-doyles-a-family-dedicated-to-o-v-wrestling/?mc_cid=e9f57db17d&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
2 } – Leeman Education Center will be a storytelling facility
Mitchell County residents will soon have a place where they can learn about the county’s rich history. The Cedar Valley Seminary Foundation purchased the former Press News building back in March 2019, and it is currently in the process of turning it into the Leeman Education Center. The center is named after Osage native Gerald “Germ” Leeman, who won a silver medal in wrestling during the 1948 Summer Olympics. In a previous Press News article, Joyce Ruehlow, president of the Cedar Valley Seminary Foundation Board, said Leeman always gave credit to his hometown for his success. These are Monday’s words on his wrestling heroes:
“I grew up in Oklahoma, which was a hotbed of wrestling. There were guys that I followed that wrestled there. That 1972 Olympic Team, I was 10 years old and I’d been wrestling for three or four years. I can remember watching Jimmy Carr at 17 (years old) wrestle. That whole ‘72 team was a fascinating team. Rick Sanders and, of course, Gable. Wayne Wells was an Oklahoma guy, so I followed him as a little kid. I could identify with him. I got his autograph a couple of times when I was a kid along with Gable and Chris Taylor. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1593239922142&twSessionId=asisibzngs&postId=783534135&mc_cid=c0a731c968&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

“From a wrestling standpoint, (my hero) was definitely Dave Schultz. I liked him as a competitor and liked how he approached the sport, and he was always different. He was always trying to do things a little different. That was something that was unique that I kind of identified with as a wrestler.
“(From a mentorship standpoint), there’s probably three people. … Number one, my uncle Chuck Schill. He’s the one who got me started in the sport of wrestling and kind of guided me and made me understand I could be successful in the sport and kind of led me to the St. Edward program … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1593491866792&twSessionId=shgpxouqep&postId=783579135&mc_cid=7ba10e0d72&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

These are Ferrari’s words on his wrestling heroes:
“I have a couple wrestling heroes and I’d say the main ones would be John Smith and Frank Molinaro for sure. It’s because of the way they are on the mat and off the mat. They both had great careers on the mat, but John Smith is a great person. He’s very down to earth and he’s a strong Christian. He still goes to church every Sunday, or he tries to go, he was telling me. I’ve always looked up to that. On top of that, he’s in the Italian Hall of Fame. That’s huge for me because that’s my goal. I’d like to be in the Italian Hall of Fame, too. I’m an Italian American. I aspire to be like him in all ways. In his wrestling and his lifestyle. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1593577080867&twSessionId=vkvkrragpp&postId=783608135&mc_cid=7a484e7dde&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

The 72nd installment of My Wrestling Hero features John Clark. The Sacred Heart coach shares his thoughts on his wrestling heroes: Dan Gable, Tom Brands and Cael Sanderson.
These are Clark’s words on his wrestling heroes:
“My hero growing up, and still to this day, is Dan Gable. I got to see it firsthand when (Gable’s Iowa team) set that (NCAA points) record in 1997. That’s the year (my brother) Mitch got second in the country. I loved everything about what they did. That kind of leads into my next one and that’s Tom Brands. He’s an extension to some degree of Gable. When I would go out to the Olympic Training Center before I got established in my wrestling career, Tom would offer to help me and I was a nobody in wrestling at the time. I’ll always remember that and I’ll always be thankful for that. “The other thing about Tom Brands is I really paid attention to how he responded with the news of not having a national tournament this year. It was really impressive. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1594090208050&twSessionId=ksxzvqbcfh&postId=784090135&mc_cid=097a633e42&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
