1 } – Five things you didn’t know about Olympic freestyle wrestling champion Taha Akgul
The 125kg grappler became a hero in Turkey after winning his nation’s only gold medal at Rio 2016, but did you know he barely ate anything before his final bout? More on that below!
Taha Akgul has a big presence in Turkey, in every sense of the word.
Standing at 1.92m (6ft 4in) and weighing 125kg (276lb), he cuts a formidable figure. But it’s his exploits as a freestyle wrestler that have won him so much acclaim. At the Rio 2016 Olympics he won Turkey’s only gold medal, dominating Iran’s Komeil Ghasemi in the final 3-1. But at the end of 2019, shortly after winning his seventh European Championships, Akgul was struck down with a serious shoulder injury that kept him out of the sport for a year.
As wrestling prepares to make its return from the coronavirus delay in Belgrade, December 12-18, the 30-year-old is nearing full fitness and is determined to retain his Olympic crown at the Tokyo Olympics.
But how well do you know the Turkish wrestler? … rest of story at https://www.olympicchannel.com/en/stories/features/detail/five-interesting-facts-wrestling-turkey-taha-akgul/?mc_cid=6c7e360412&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – Cuban Wrestling Gala this Friday and Saturday at the Sports City
Havana, Dec 10.- With the completion of 30 fights in two days, the Pedro Val In Memoriam Fight Gala will be held in this capital, on the 11th and 12th of the current month, in what promise to be two days with much rivalry and emotions. To discuss this and other issues, federation, coaches and wrestlers met with the press this Wednesday at the Cuban Sports Hall, located inside the Ciudad Deportiva coliseum, to address what happened in a year marked by Covid-19 and new projects.
Luis de la Portilla, national commissioner of that discipline, expressed that despite the little competitive activity due to the pandemic, the Cuban gladiators took advantage of their participation in the pre-Olympic tournament in Ottawa, Canada, in March, to obtain 10 tickets to the Tokyo summer date. … rest of story at http://www.cadenagramonte.cu/english/show/articles/31671:cuban-wrestling-gala-this-friday-and-saturday-at-the-sports-city?mc_cid=afaeddd782&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

International wrestling returns at ‘Individual World Cup’ in Belgrade
This competition replaces the 2020 World Championships, but will still take place in the Serbian capital from 12-18 December.
It wasn’t the event we originally expected, but wrestling will finally return this week at the Individual World Cup in Belgrade, Serbia. The 2020 World Championships were initially scheduled for those dates, but the non-participation of several top nations due to coronavirus concerns meant that the event was reborn as an individual World Cup competition in the same location. Fans will be able to enjoy all three categories of senior wrestling: freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s. … full story at https://www.olympicchannel.com/en/stories/news/detail/wrestling-individual-world-cup-preview-belgrade/?mc_cid=d179f0f753&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
5 } – 2020 UWW Individual World Cup: The Biggest Names & Best Weights
SHARETWEETSHAREEMAILCOMMENTS
Following months of speculation, anticipation, confusion — and eventually, optimism — United World Wrestling’s attempt at concluding the calendar year on a high note has finally arrived. The 2020 UWW Individual World Cup, to be considered as an inaugural event should it continue in the future, begins Saturday morning live from Belgrade, Serbia offering Greco-Roman fans an opportunity to catch some of the sport’s most prominent competitors in action without traditional team concerns on the line.
What is on the line for wrestlers, save for pride and an earnest surge of confidence prior to the last leg of the Olympic training block, is money. 300,000 SF (Swiss francs) is set for division among all 30 weight categories (including men and women’s freestyle). Therefore, the financial incentive and general format of the Individual World Cup bring to mind a popular event from the recent past, Azerbaijan’s Golden Grand Prix. … rest of story at http://www.fivepointmove.com/greco-wrestling-news/2020-uww-individual-world-cup-preview/?mc_cid=afaeddd782&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
International wrestling to return in Belgrade with UWW Individual World Cup
More than 500 wrestlers from 51 countries are set to compete at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Individual World Cup in Serbian capital Belgrade. The event serves as a replacement for the cancelled World Championships, which Belgrade had been due to host. After countries including Japan and the United States pulled out over coronavirus concerns, UWW called off the World Championships as a threshold for entries had not been met.
The Individual World Cup will also be the first international competition since the beginning of the global health crisis. With COVID-19 countermeasures in place, 505 competitors are set to battle it out across 30 freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s weight divisions over the next seven days. … full story at https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1101889/uww-individual-world-cup-belgrade-2020?mc_cid=afaeddd782&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
6 } – Individual World Cup Results
Maskevich, Korpasi, & RUS Own The Story On Day 1 Of Individual World Cup
What transpires in Belgrade, Serbia from now until Monday is different from a typical World event — though for the most part, the results coming out of Saturday’s action were, indeed, typical. 7 } – Bureau Announces Change of Dates and Locations for 2021 Championships and Qualifiers
CORSIER-SUR-VEVEY, Switzerland (December 22) – The United World Wrestling bureau held a virtual meeting Tuesday to discuss several topics, including an update to the dates and locations of competitions in 2021.
Citing limited interest in a January competition, the bureau voted to move the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series tournament from mid-January to March 4-7.
To help with costs and coordination the bureau also voted to combine the Asian Championships and Olympic Qualifier to Almaty, Kazakhstan with the tournaments set to run back-to-back April 9-17. Similarly, the African & Oceania Qualifier and African Championships are scheduled to be held back-to-back in El Jadida, Morocco from April 2-11. Due to travel concerns surrounding COVID-19 the Oceania continental championships have been cancelled.
Given the large number of expected participants, the European Championships and European Olympic Qualifier will remain at separate locations with the Qualifier scheduled March 18-21 in Budapest and the Championships April 19-25 in Poland. … rest of story at https://unitedworldwrestling.org/article/bureau-announces-change-dates-and-locations-2021-championships-and-qualifiers?mc_cid=f9e49e1788&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – Wrestling breakdown: Razambek Zhamalov knocks off two-time World champion Frank Chamizo
The 2020 Russian National champion cemented his status as world #1 at 74 kg with a win over a perennial elite.
After the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo were delayed, United World Wrestling scrambled to organize a world-level tournament for the year. Impressively, they were able to secure a venue in Belgrade, Serbia and produce what could have been an official World Championship. Unfortunately, major international players like the United States and Japan declined to send their teams to Serbia.
Without full buy-in from key members of the wrestling world, UWW downgraded the event from the World Championship to the “Individual World Cup,” more or less the exact same format as worlds, without the title. Even participating nations like Iran and India held back pound-for-pound talents such as Hassan Yazdanicharati and Bajrang Punia, but the Olympic weights were stacked nonetheless. … rest of story at https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2020/12/25/22187999/wrestling-breakdown-razambek-zhamalov-knocks-off-two-time-world-champion-frank-chamizo?mc_cid=0d946e15c0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
10 } – Monday Roundup: European C’Ships Clarification; Revamped Schedule
Voting is now open for our end-of-year awards, which for 2020 is limited to Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Individual Performance. As reported in last week’s Roundup, Impact Performer is unfortunately unavailable due to the fact that there simply was not a large-enough pool of American athletes who competed in international/overseas events, nor were there enough events, period, from which to glean amenable candidates.
Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Individual Performance are different, however. There most certainly were several wrestlers whom despite the lack of competition managed to achieve meaningful milestones and deserve to be recognized for their efforts — hence why AOTY is being offered. In addition, Outstanding Individual Performance is our “snapshot” award, as it isolates one athlete’s standing at one event and is supported by contextual value. … rest of story at http://www.fivepointmove.com/greco-wrestling-news/european-cships-clarification-revamped-schedule/?mc_cid=c19dc39a02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

The tournament will start Jan. 15 with women’s freestyle, followed by men’s freestyle on Jan. 16 and wrapping up with Greco-Roman on Jan. 17. Among the USA’s entrants, there are two Olympic champions, four World champions and five World medalists. 2016 Olympic champions Helen Maroulis and Kyle Snyder will be competing in Nice. Both are also two-time World champions. Maroulis, who was the first woman in USA Wrestling history to win an Olympic title, last competed at the Pan American Olympic Qualifier in March, where she earned gold and qualified the U.S. at her weight, 57 kg, for the 2021 Olympics. 3 } – Sean Thompson ’21: Leading Through History
Wrestling senior builds career skills through internship
One of the wrestling team’s top competitors throughout his collegiate career, senior Sean Thompson let his actions do most of his talking early in his career, but with the help of an internship through Gettysburg College’s Civil War Institute, Thompson has emerged as a vocal and consummate team leader. Thompson opened his collegiate wrestling career with a bang, claiming top honors at 141 pounds at the Messiah Invitational in his first-ever appearance. He’s racked up 82 career wins in three seasons, including 31 during the 2019-20 campaign.
Off the mat, the history and political science double-major has grown his leadership skills exponentially, thanks in large part to the Brian C. Pohanka Internship Program. The program gives Gettysburg students special opportunity to do paid work on the frontlines of history, giving public tours of iconic historic sites, gaining hands-on experience with original artifacts and documents, assisting with the management of historic landscapes, leading children’s programs, and conducting independent historical research. At the urging of Gettysburg Professors Peter Carmichael and Bill Bowman, Thompson applied for the program during the fall of 2018. … rest of story at https://gettysburgsports.com/news/2020/12/4/wrestling-sean-thompson-21-leading-through-history.aspx?mc_cid=876213e0a7&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
4 } – College wrestling: Wartburg embracing opportunity to wrestle Iowa State
It was a ray of sunshine in the midst of a gloomy time.
Wartburg College wrestling coach Eric Keller’s phone rang late in the month of last March, weeks after the COVID-19 virus forced the NCAA to cancel the Division III wrestling championships on the eve of their start. Keller was still processing that loss.
College wrestling: Wartburg’s Briggs loves a good challenge
But like many athletes, a good dare is hard to pass up, and one was presented that day to Briggs, now a junior All-American wrestler at Wartburg College. The caller identification on Keller’s phone said it was Iowa State head coach Kevin Dresser. Immediately, Keller thought this could be interesting. “He called randomly out of the blue,” Keller said. “He asked if I’d like to dual next season. I said absolutely we are 100 percent in and let’s figure out how to make it happen. It’s was a good day in the midst of a lot of rough ones.” Initially, Dresser and Keller settled on Nov. 6 as the date, but with COVID-19 positive cases rising nationwide, the NCAA postponed the start of its wrestling season to after January. … rest of story at https://wcfcourier.com/sports/blogs/half_nelson_half_fiction/college-wrestling-wartburg-embracing-opportunity-to-wrestle-iowa-state/article_947b0492-27d6-511b-b73f-608972035038.html?mc_cid=e4f16a9e0e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
5 } – King’s College Winter Athletic Competition Update
Dear Members of the King’s College Community:
Given the continual and growing challenges presented by COVID-19, and with the health and safety of our students, staff, and partners as our top priority, King’s College will not participate in winter sports competition in the coming months. This decision impacts women’s basketball, men’s basketball, women’s ice hockey, men’s ice hockey, indoor track & field, swimming, and wrestling. I know how much the winter season means to our students, staff, and our coaches—and especially to the dedicated men and women who give so much to play these sports. I am deeply sorry that we will miss this year’s season and the joy and sense of community the games bring to our campus. I also know that there is nothing that I can say that will lessen the disappointment and feelings of loss that are being experienced by our student-athletes, families, coaches, and friends. The public health environment relating to COVID-19, including here in Northeastern Pennsylvania, is currently no better than it was when we decided to cancel fall sports competition. In fact, it is worse. … rest of story at https://kingscollegeathletics.com/news/2021/1/7/general-kings-college-winter-athletic-competition-update.aspx
6 } – Shenandoah wrestlers eager to compete after long delay to inaugural season
After nearly a year of navigating his new program through COVID-19 and a months-long delay to the wrestling season, Shenandoah University head coach Tim McGuire will finally lead his team onto the mat for the first time this weekend. It will be a major milestone for the Hornets, who are set to compete at the U.S. Marine Corps Star City Classic hosted by Roanoke College at the Salem Civic Center this morning. Not only will it be the first-ever event for Shenandoah’s new wrestling program, but it will also mark the end of a 310-day sports hiatus for the university, which shut down all intercollegiate activities in mid-March in response to the ongoing pandemic. 7 } – Augsburg coaching legend John Grygelko passes away
MINNEAPOLIS — John Grygelko, who played a key role in establishing the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team as a small-college national power, died on Friday, December 18, 2020. He was 93 years old.
Grygelko coached the Auggies during a key period of the program’s growth, from 1972 to 1980. His teams never finished lower than second in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition, winning six straight league titles from 1975 to 1980. Grygelko coached 32 MIAC individual champions, including three conference tournament most valuable wrestlers. He produced a 98-12-1 dual-meet record in his Augsburg career, including two unbeaten seasons (11-0 in 1976-77, 12-0 in 1978-79).
Under Grygelko, the Auggies finished in the top 10 in NAIA national competition four times, including a second-place finish in 1975 and a third-place finish in 1979. He coached 18 NAIA All-Americans during his Augsburg years, including national champions Scott Whirley ’82 (126 pounds) and Jeff Swenson ’79 (167 pounds) in 1979. Grygelko was named NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1975.
“We hold John and his family in our hearts as we mourn his loss. ‘G’ was much more than a coach to so many of us. ‘G’ was a father figure who guided the lives of hundreds of young men, and for many of us, helped mold us into the men we are today. He was instrumental in bringing Augsburg’s wrestling program to national prominence,” said Swenson, who succeeded Grygelko as Augsburg’s head coach in 1980 and led the Auggies to 10 NCAA Division III national championships in his 25 seasons (1980-84, 1986-2007). Swenson currently serves as Augsburg’s athletic director. … rest of story at https://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2020/12/18/mwr121820.aspx?mc_cid=ed5fd11129&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
8 } – Texas native finds his place with Central wrestling squad
A weekend visit to Pella sealed the decision for Chris Wilson
HOUSTON, TEXAS—The 2019 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship and a meal at Olive Garden helped seal the choice for Chris Wilson (sophomore, Houston, Texas, Cypress Ridge HS) to join the Central College wrestling team.
Wilson was planning to attend a community college and start the path towards becoming a nurse in the Houston area. His college wrestling recruitment ramped up after his senior season, including a message from Central’s assistant coach Daniel Page. One thing led to another and Wilson was on his first plane ride to visit campus. “It was my first and only college visit because I was hooked,” Wilson said. “I liked how the campus looked and I was kind of starstruck when I first met Coach Page. I was pumped to be on a college visit and meeting with a college coach.”
His weekend at Central put the Texas native at ease.
“It was just really fun to be here,” Wilson said. “On the last night I was here, I went to a dance on campus and I really connected with (former Dutch wrestler) Jeremy Vester and some other wrestlers. It just felt like I was already here and I felt really comfortable.” … rest of story at https://athletics.central.edu/news/2020/12/9/texas-native-finds-his-place-with-central-wrestling-squad.aspx?mc_cid=372ecbefe1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

WINTER SPORTS ANNOUNCEMENT
In an abundance of caution to protect the health and safety of students and staff, after consultation with conference leadership, the presidents of the State University of New York Athletic Conference have made the difficult decision to cancel winter sports (basketball, ice hockey, indoor track & field, swim & dive). Additionally, SUNY Brockport has canceled winter competition for the non-SUNYAC sports of wrestling and gymnastics. Despite these changes for Brockport athletics, the campus community continues to recognize the importance of athletics participation to its student-athletes. Much like the fall sports, administrators and coaches have developed plans to engage student-athletes safely in small-group activity through in-person practices and instruction, strength and conditioning training, leadership training and team building activities.
Winter student-athletes will not lose a semester or season of eligibility if they participate in skill and drill sessions during the 2020-2021 academic year.
