NCAA Division III News (2022) – # 2

TDR Editor’s Notes ; The first weekend of open tournaments and pre-season action were wrestled and some Division III schools were back in action. Some of them have been out for over a year. We are glad to see a full slate of teams engaged in wrestling. Keep wrestling onward!

1 } – Wabash Mourns The Passing Of Max Servies
Legendary Wabash College coach and athletics director Max Edward Servies passed away Saturday at the age of 85.
Servies, who first came to Wabash as a student in 1954 after graduating from Crawfordsville High School, served as the Little Giants’ wrestling coach for 40 years before retiring in 2000. His Wabash teams accumulated 487 victories in dual meets with 38 consecutive winning seasons. Twenty-one Wabash wrestlers graduated as members of Phi Beta Kappa and three of his wrestlers earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. He coached All-Americans Dan Emerson, Ryan Mills, Steve Wagner, John Rust, and his own son, Tim Servies. Max also spent 33 years as the College’s Director of Athletics, stepping down from that position in 1998.
Max Servies was inducted into the Wabash Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988. He is also a member of the Indiana Wrestling Hall of Fame, the NCAA Division III Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame after serving 28 seasons as an assistant football coach at Wabash. Servies earned the Wabash Alumni Award of Merit in 1983 and the Indianapolis Association of Wabash Men’s Monon Bell Citation in 1994.
Servies graduated from Wabash in 1958 as a biology major. He earned a master’s degree in biology from Purdue University in 1962. 2 } – Wrestling to open 2021-22 season Nov. 6 at Mount Union Invitational

ADA — The Ohio Northern wrestling team will open its 2021-22 schedule on Nov. 6 at the Mount Union Invitational under 34th-year head coach Ron Beaschler. The Polar Bears will open the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of their schedule on Nov. 16 when they host Heidelberg in a 7 pm contest at the ONU Sports Center. The 40th annual ONU Invitational is slated for Dec. 4. Northern will also host Mount Saint Joseph and Manchester (Ind.) in dual meets on Jan. 4, Otterbein in an OAC dual meet on Jan. 18 and the Mid-States Invitational on Feb. 12. 3 } – Mario Vasquez Named Men’s Wrestling Head Coach
KERRVILLE, TX: The Schreiner University Athletics Department has named Mario Vasquez as the new Head Coach of the Schreiner University Men’s Wrestling team.
Coach Vasquez will be coming to Schreiner as a former collegiate wrestler at the University of the Ozarks and Ferrum College. During his time at the University of the Ozarks he became a 2-time Conference Finalist and competed in the Lower Midwest Region. At Ferrum College, he finished his career being a 4-time Conference Finalist, Southeast Regional Finalist, and received All-American Honors with an 8th place finish at the NCAA National Championships in 2019. “We are very excited with the evolution of our wrestling programs. We are transitioning to the NCAA Division III which will align this program with majority of our athletics programs. 4 } – Men’s and women’s wrestling become first new Wildcat sports in quarter century
Linfield University on Monday announced the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling teams, which will begin competition in the fall of 2022.
The university will hire a coach for the programs right away, and begin recruiting for next year. Men’s and women’s wrestling will become the 22nd and 23rd NCAA Division III sports at Linfield, which has a strong tradition of student athletics. “This is a big moment in Linfield’s history, and in the history of Wildcat athletics,” Athletic Director Garry Killgore said. “It represents our first new varsity programs in almost 25 years, which is not a step we took lightly. Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and we’re excited to offer new opportunities for those athletes.”
The last time the university added varsity sports was in 1996 with women’s golf and 1997 with women’s lacrosse. Linfield had a men’s wrestling team until 1986, which competed at the NAIA level at the time. Linfield’s Office of Admission has consistently fielded a large number of questions in recent years from high school students wanting to wrestle in college. 5 } – SEAN WHITE NAMED BVU HEAD WRESTLING COACH
BVU HALL OF FAME COACH NAMED SPECIAL ADVISOR TO THE PROGRAM
STORM LAKE, Iowa (October 6, 2021) – Following a national search, Buena Vista University (BVU) director of athletics, Scott Brown, has announced that Sean White will be named the next head coach of the BVU wrestling program.
White, who’s been the program’s acting head coach since August, has been with the program these last seven seasons as the top assistant.  During that time, he helped coach 13 regional placewinners, two national qualifiers, one All-American (NWCA), and 10 Scholar All-Americans.  He has also played a very large role in the Northwest Iowa Wrestling Regional Training Center, guiding practices for elite student-athletes in the area. 
“I am very grateful for the opportunity to lead this program going forward,” says White. “Former coach Mark Rial left with a solid foundation, and I plan to build off that in order to continue the process of developing these young men. We are Beavers, and Beavers Build!”
During his first season at BVU, White was instrumental in the success of the conference’s Freshman of the Year, Nashid Barrow, and NWCA Scholar All-American Seth Shatto.  White guided BVU Wrestling to the Beaver Service Award in 2015 with his tireless effort coordinating the team’s civic engagement activities.

6 } – Garriques Releases Challenging 2021-22 Wrestling Schedule
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – A trip to the prestigious NWCA National Duals highlights the 2021-22 Centenary University wrestling schedule released by head coach John Garriques.
“We are looking forward to getting back on the mats as it’s been a long time since some of these young men have been able to compete,” said Garriques. “We return a lot of talent, along with five seniors. Our recruiting efforts paid off, as we brought in a large group of talented wrestlers who are excited to compete. I’m very excited to see what this season holds for us, as I’m optimistic in how far we can climb that NCAA National ladder.” The 2021-22 wrestling campaign kicks off as always with the Public Eliminations, as the Cyclones wrestle off to see who will earn the start at each weight class. 7 } – Stevens Wrestling Releases 2021-22 Schedule
Challenging schedule that features three Division I opponents opens Nov. 5
HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 8, 2021)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team announced its 2021-22 competition schedule Friday. The calendar features 12 dual meets, including one at Canavan Arena, where the Ducks are 42-12 since 2010 and culminates with the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship in January and the Southeast Regional in February, in preparation for the national championship tournament. Additionally, the dual schedule is highlighted by matchups with three Division I opponents in Lock Haven, Clarion and Cornell, with two of the matchups (Lock Haven and Clarion) taking place at December’s Messiah Duals.
“We are excited to release a full slate of teams and get back on the horse,” said head coach Joe Favia. “The goal is to pick up right where we left off, competing with the best in the country. We have some real highlights on the schedule, and I know the guys can’t wait to be back in front of our fans!” The first dual of the season is on Nov. 13, when the Ducks host Muhlenberg College at 11:30 in the lone campus dual of the year. The Ducks have won 11 straight meetings with the Mules and the November matchup will mark the third straight in Hoboken, where the Ducks’ average margin of victory has been 11 points. 8 } – Alvernia Men’s Wrestling Announces 2021-22 Schedule
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 13, 2021) – Alvernia University Men’s Wrestling announced its schedule for the upcoming 2021-22 season on Wednesday, with the season set to begin on Sunday, November 7.
Alvernia, competing under Head Coach Kriss Bellanca, is competing in its second full season of competition. Alvernia competed in a full season in 2019-20, but competed in a modified season in the spring of 2021.  The Golden Wolves open their season at home with an invitational in The PLEX on November 7th. The following Saturday on November 13 Alvernia heads to Ursinus College for the Racich Rumbles. The Golden Wolves then head to the Waynesburg Duals on Saturday, November 20th, and close out the month of November with a dual match at Ursinus on November 23rd. Alvernia opens up December at Messiah’s Petrofes Tournament on December 3rd and December 4th. Alvernia heads to Wilkes-Barre for back-to-back matches on December 10th and 11th. Alvernia takes on Wilkes on the 10th and King’s on the 11th. Alvernia will also face Muhlenberg at King’s on the 11th.

9} – Western New England Wrestling Reveals 2021-22 Schedule
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 14, 2021) – Western New England’s wrestling team is ready to announce their 2021-22 season schedule. The wrestling team opens with an invitational at Ithaca College on November 5 and 6. They turn around the following week, November 13, to host the City of Champions Tournament at Western New England, where they face off with Springfield College, Springfield Technical Community College, and American International College. On November 19, The Golden Bears are up against Messiah College at home and concludes the month on November 20 at the Doug Parker Invitational Tournament hosted by Springfield College. December 3, the Golden Bears are away for a match with Rhode Island College. They are back at home for their battle with New England College on December 10. 10 } – Wisconsin-Whitewater Wrestling Finalizes 2021-22 Schedule
2021-22 Warhawk Wrestling Schedule
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team will begin its 2021-22 competition season in November.
After a shortened 2020-21 season that included four duals against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents, the Warhawks return to a full slate this season. UW-W finished with a 3-1 record during the duals, which all took place in February of 2021.
UW-Whitewater will host Division II Parkside on Nov. 10 at Kachel Gymnasium. The rest of the month includes a visit to the Adrian (Mich.) Duals on Nov. 13 and a short ride east to Concordia Wisconsin for the annual CUW Open on Nov. 20.
The Warhawks kick off December with in-state trips to the MSOE Invite and the Parkside Open on Dec. 4. UW-W heads to UW-Eau Claire for a dual on Dec. 8, and hosts UW-Oshkosh for a dual on Dec. 10. The team closes the calendar year with the North Central Invite on Dec. 11 in Naperville, Ill.
UW-Whitewater heads to Louisville, Ky., on Jan. 7-8 for the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals. Following a dual at UW-La Crosse on Jan. 13, the team heads to Elmhurst (Ill.) for the Al Hanke Invite. The following week, the Warhawks host UW-Platteville for a dual on Jan. 19 and visit UW-Stevens Point for a dual on Jan. 21. The team closes the month at the annual Pete Willson-Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational on Jan. 28-29 and at the Harper Open on Jan. 29.

11 } – 2021-2022 ALFRED STATE PREVIEW
Season Outlook:
Alfred State is set to enter its 3rd season competing at the NCAA level this fall and looks to continue to elevate as a program. Head Coach Signorelli has brought in back-to-back quality recruiting classes to add to a strong group of veteran returners to begin his tenue leading the Pioneers. Season Outlook:
Last year’s Cardinal team finished 8-1 in duals, with the sole blemish coming in a 24-13 loss at Wartburg, and carries a 26-dual win streak within the CCIW into the current season. The 2021 team achieved 7 All-Americans at the NWCA Championships. 5 of those All-Americans return this season including National Champion Cody Baldridge and runner-up Robbie Precin. 12 } – 2021-2022 AVERETT PREVIEW
Season Outlook:
5th year program Averett is set to have a monumental season returning all 10 starters, including 6 wrestlers who have been ranked in the top 12 & 3 All-Americans. The program went 10-1 in dual competition last season. Schedule highlights include competing at the Ned McGinley and New Standard tournaments in PA, along with wrestling at the NWCA DIII National Duals, Virginia Duals & 3 D1 programs at the Patriot Duals. Averett will also be hosting the Southeast Wrestling Conference Championships Feb 5th. Season Outlook:
The Colonels are excited to compete after only having two dual meets last year. Great combination on seasoned wrestlers and a great recruiting class filled with state placewinners and a few transfers.
