No. 4 Iowa State enjoys a victory lap against No. 3 Arizona State
Cyclones win 19-15 and their stock keeps rising
AMES — David Carr shook hands with his vanquished opponent, took a deep breath and circled the Hilton Coliseum floor for a victory lap.
Iowa State’s star 165-pound wrestler had earned it.
Carr won by technical fall Sunday, providing the No. 4 Cyclones with much-needed bonus points in a tense 19-15 triumph over No. 3 Arizona State.
“(Strength coach Ben Durbin) said it would be kind of cool if I went and gave some people some high-fives after a match, just to get the fans kind of pumped up,” said Carr, a three-time All-American and 2021 NCAA champion. “They paid good money to come sit that close and (it was) to get fired up for the next guy coming out — and (174-pounder Julien) Broderson delivered.”
So did third-ranked Carr, who improved to 11-0 this season in the 17-2 victory over No. 28 Tony Negron. The Cyclones (8-2) won the first five matches of the dual, but lost the final five, as well. The last two — at 141 and 149 pounds — were sudden victory setbacks to No. 10 Casey Swiderski and No. 3 Paniro Johnson.
“Sometimes you get those ugly W’s and this was an ugly W,” ISU head coach Kevin Dresser said.
But a win’s a win — and Sunday’s was the second over a No. 3-ranked team in the past two seasons. ISU hadn’t beaten a top-three team for 12 years before breaking through with a 20-12 win over No. 3 Oklahoma State last season. So the program’s trajectory continues to trend upward, even if a couple tough individual setbacks Sunday were mild causes for concern.
“It’s early January and we’re all about greater later,” Carr said. … rest of story at Thegazette.com/sports/no-4-iowa-state-enjoys-a-victory-lap-against-no-3-arizona-state

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 10-ranked University of Missouri wrestling team defeated No. 13 Northern Iowa, 24-12, Sunday, Jan. 8 inside the Hearnes Center. The Tigers improve to 4-2 (3-0, Big 12) on the season, while the Panthers move to 3-2 (1-1).
Mizzou got off to a hot start thanks to No. 14 redshirt sophomore Noah Surtin‘s return to the Hearnes Center, earning a tech fall at 125. After freshman Zeke Seltzer took No. 15 Kyle Biscoglia the distance in his debut, redshirt senior Allan Hart and redshirt junior Brock Mauller picked up a pair of decisions at 141 and 149, respectively, ballooning the Tigers lead to 11-3.
Northern Iowa returned the favor by picking up a pair of decisions at 157 and 165, narrowing the gap to 11-9. Cowboys Take Final Four Matches in 20-12 Win Over Oregon State
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team moved to 5-1 on the season as it pulled together four consecutive wins to close out the dual and defeat Oregon State, 20-12, inside Gill Coliseum on Sunday.
“We looked maybe a little lethargic in some of those early matches, just not ready to go punch someone,” head coach John Smith said. “Losing at 165, 174, 184 and 197, that wasn’t ideal, but I was pleased with Konner Doucet. I was pleased with our Trevor Mastrogiovanni and I was pleased that Daton Fix hammered out the team victory by extending the score to a major decision to put us up by five going into the last match. Carter Young with the win was a nice separation to close it out.”
Trailing 12-7 heading into the final four bouts, Doucet turned the momentum in favor of the Cowboys with a 3-2 decision over J.J. Nixon. Doucet’s victory ended a run of victories by the Beavers spanning from 165 pounds to 197 pounds.
When the lineup turned over to 125 pounds, Mastrogiovanni scored the only takedown of the match in a 3-2 decision over No. 12 Brandon Kaylor to put OSU up in the team score for good. Fix followed up with a 12-4 major decision over No. 18 Jason Shaner as the second-ranked Cowboy moved to 11-0 on the season. Young sealed the dual for good with a 6-2 decision over No. 23 Cleveland Belton.
With the dual starting at 149 pounds, the Pokes got on the board first behind a 10-2 major decision courtesy of Victor Voinovich. It was the second bonus-point … rest of story at OKstate.com/news/2023/1/8/cowboy-wrestling-cowboys-take-final-four-matches-in-20-12-win-over-oregon-state

Pucino’s Pin Catapults Illini to First B1G Win
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois wrestling team won their home opening Big Ten dual against Wisconsin on Sunday, Jan. 8. Sophomore Danny Pucino secured the fall over Wisconsin’s Felix Lettini at 5:40 to give the Illini the six points that secured the victory, 18-17.
“Today was a great day for our program,” said head coach Mike Poeta. “The last three weeks I can’t tell you enough how proud I am of our guys. We’ve been on a roll. We’ve been climbing, fighting and wrestling hard. The guys are doing exactly what we asked for. I can’t say enough good things about Danny Pucino and Zac Braunagel. Zac has put together some of the best wrestling he’s ever had. Dylan Connell is starting to get on a roll. Lucas Byrd is still Lucas Byrd. When he walks out there, I’m confident he can beat anybody in the country. Today was a fun day for Illinois wrestling.”
Today’s meet started at 157 lbs. compared to the usual 125 lb starts. It looked bleak early for Illinois when they dropped the first two matches and trailed 8-0. Redshirt sophomore Edmond Ruth set off a spark for the Illini when he won his 18th straight match. He decisioned Josh Otto (Wisconsin) 4-1.
Illinois went on to win the next two matches to take the lead 9-8. Redshirt freshman Dylan Connell defeated Wisconsin’s Tyler Dow. Redshirt junior Zac Braunagel won his rematch against Braxton Amos by decision 4-3. Zac faced Braxton at Midlands just a week ago in the finals and defeated him in the second tie breaker round 2-1.

No. 24 App State Wins Big Over Binghamton
BOONE, N.C. — Ranked No. 24 in the nation, App State Wrestling showed its strength and depth with a 29-10 home win Sunday against a Binghamton team that’s come close to knocking off several top-30 opponents this season.
The Mountaineers (4-1) won the first seven matches to claim a 23-0 lead and finished with eight victories among the 10 weight classes. Binghamton (2-7) traveled south to Chattanooga, Tenn., last weekend for the Southern Scuffle, where it had three wrestlers place, then headed to Raleigh for a Friday dual at No. 6 NC State before coming to Varsity Gym.
Three of the Bearcats’ other losses were close duals against No. 9 Minnesota, No. 16 North Dakota State and No. 26 Indiana, so there was no danger of looking ahead to Friday’s home dual against No. 8 Virginia Tech for App State.
The Mountaineers, at No. 24 in the NWCA Coaches Poll and as high as No. 20 (from Win Magazine), go into the ranked showdown against Virginia Tech with four straight dual wins. Tickets for Friday’s dual at 7 p.m. in Varsity Gym can be purchased by clicking HERE, with a cost of $20 for adults and $7 for youth.
Will Miller stood out Sunday with his 10-0 major decision at 174 pounds against Sam DePrez, who entered 2023 with a national ranking of No. 25 in his weight class. Jon Jon Millner also earned a bonus point with a 16-3 major decision at 149, and a forfeit at 197 allowed Carson Floyd to produce six points for the Mountaineers.
App State’s five wins by decision came from Caleb Smith (11-9 at 125), Sean Carter (10-5 at 133), Heath Gonyer (4-1 at 141), Tommy Askey (5-2 at 157) and Will Formato (2-0 at 165). Binghamton’s victories resulted from wins by top-25 wrestlers Jacob Nolan at 184 and Cory Day in the heavyweight division — the Bearcats were missing two-time All-American Lou DePrez at 197 because of an injury.
Miller used a takedown and four-point near fall in the last 20 seconds of the first period to seize control against Sam DePrez. Miller rode out the second period and added a takedown with 1:18 left in the third before finishing on top. … rest of story at APPstatesports.com/news/2023/1/8/-24-wrestling-no-24-app-state-wins-big-over-binghamton
