Wolves Trounce The Trojans On Senior Night
Newberry Honors The Seniors En Route To A Sizable Win
NEWBERRY, S.C. — In what would be the last home dual of the season, Newberry Men’s Wrestling played host to the Trojans from the University of Mount Olive in a matchup between the number three and number four teams in the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas. The Wolves looked to rebound from the last outing in dual action as they were defeated at home by the Lander Bearcats back on February 1. With the Trojans coming off of a sizable 54-0 victory against Emory & Henry, Newberry needed to defend the home field advantage and end on a high note in conference play and for Senior Night.
Starting the night off at 141 lbs, Josh Blatt (Albemarle, N.C.) started off strong for the home team, winning a decision 8-3 over Hayden Waddell. Dallas Wilson defeated senior 149 lbs Devan Moore (Baxley, Ga.) by decision 7-2 in the ensuing match before senior 157 lbs Will Evans (Richmond Hill, Ga.) secured his first win in dual action on the year, pinning Tyler Vinson at 2:05.
The Trojans came back to win the fourth match of the night, with Mike Vernagallo beating 165 lbs P.J. Wunderlich (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) by tech fall (16-0, 4:57), but the number one wrestler at 174 lbs in Super Region II, Dayton Fields (Seneca, Mo.), made sure to avenge the loss of his teammate by winning against Seth Thomas by a 19-2 tech fall. 184 lbs ZeBrandon Gant (Springfield, Ga.) continued the winning ways for the Wolves, securing a 14-5 major decision over Noah Williams, and 197 lbs Khris Walton (Merrillville, Ky.) did the same, winning by major decision over Jonathan Clack.
The following match resulted in Nico Ramirez … rest of story at Newberrywolves.com/news/2023/2/8/wrestling-wolves-trounce-the-trojans-on-senior-night
Carolinas Showdowns all around – Season 6, Column 79
Conference titles, area bragging rights, and post-season seeds are all on the line in multiple Carolinas clashes starting with Thursdays match between DII powerhouses Lander and Pembroke.
31-3 for a combined record, 18-0 in conference. Nine athletes ranked in the Top 12 nationally between both teams. A staggering three dozen plus podium placements plus multiple titles from multiple wrestlers at multiple tournaments for these two squads combined efforts. Gaudy achievements indeed for the Pembroke Braves and the Lander Bearcats in advance of their South Atlantic Conference Carolinas showdown this week. The series has had a decidedly UNC-P flavor as it stands 3-0 for the Braves so far. SO FAR. Please have no doubt that the Bears Den, Finis Horne Arena, will be jammed to the rafters with Lander loyals howling for the first win in this young but spirited series. National rankings definitely would point to a Bearcats victory with Lander coming in #2 and UNC-P #18. The fireworks will start from the jump as Pembrokes 125lb Logan Seliga is top ranked and should face Landers #4 in the nation James Joplin. What a boost it would be for the Bears if Joplin could hand Seliga, The Midwest Classic and Citrus Invitational champ, his first loss of the season. …
The ACC regular season title will be settled Friday…IF the visiting Pitt Panthers can take down Pat Popolizios NC State WolfPack in Raleigh. Neither going to preview this match nor predict it, but fully expecting to see a magnificent clash of Titans. When the dust settles on this season this series of matches between The WolfPack, the Panthers and Tony Robies Virginia Tech Hokies will be what folks look back on as the year the ACC “arrived.” Especially those with BIG10 tinted glasses. …
See you sometime soon!

Pac-12 Dual Meet Results
Cal Poly Remains Unbeaten in Pac-12 Duals, Beats Little Rock 25-10
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Brawley Lamer and Trevor Tinker scored wins over nationally ranked Little Rock wrestlers and Lawrence Saenz won by major decision as Cal Poly earned its third straight Pac-12 dual meet victory with a 25-10 verdict Sunday inside Mott Athletics Center.
Lamer snapped a 0-0 tie with a four-point near fall midway through the second period on his way to a 6-3 decision over No. 21 Triston Wills at 174 pounds. Lamer improved to 6-7 for the season.
Tinker earned his fourth straight victory at 285 pounds and raised his record for the year to 12-7 with a 3-2 decision against No. 32 Josiah Hall. All the scoring was accomplished in the first period with Tinker notching a takedown and Hill a reversal, but Tinker rode Hill out for the entire second and third periods for the decisive riding time point.
“We only have one job to do –wrestle hard for seven minutes,” said seventh-year Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas. “When we do our job, good things happen.”
Saenz earned Cal Poly’s lone bonus point with an 11-3 major decision over Jayden Gomez at 141. Saenz evened his record at 7-7 with an escape, takedown and four-point near fall in the second period and an escape and takedown in the final round for his second major decision of the year.
Mustang 165-pounder Legend Lamer and Little Rock’s Tyler Brennan failed to score any points until Lamer notched a takedown with four seconds remaining and Brennan quickly escaped. Lamer earned the 2-1 decision for his third consecutive triumph.
Cal Poly’s other winners, all via decision, were Ethan Rotondo at 133, Dom Demas at 149, Luka Wick at 157 and Jarad Priest at 184. Rotondo and Priest both won by 8-2 decisions while Demas earned a 6-4 decision and Wick 8-5.
“Great performance today up and down the lineup,” Sioredas said. “Our guys wrestled hard for seven minutes and stole some matches against a gritty team.”
The Mustangs are 3-0 in conference matches for the first time since the 2009-10 season when Cal Poly defeated Cal State Fullerton, CSU Bakersfield and Stanford in its first three duals en route to a 5-2 Pac-12 dual meet mark and third-place finish in the Pac-12 Championship. … rest of story at GOpoly.com/news/2023/2/5/wrestling-cal-poly-remains-unbeaten-in-pac-12-duals-beats-little-rock-25-10

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – 174-pound redshirt freshman Cael Valencia is once again the Pac-12’s Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced today. Valencia continued to make a name for himself last week with two huge wins against opponents from Little Rock and No. 20 Oregon State. On Friday he defeated Tristin Wills 5-1, then followed that with an unranked upset over No. 22 Mateo Olmos (6-4 SV1) Sunday night in Corvallis, Oregon. Oklahoma Rolls Past Rider 24-10 on Senior Day
In the final home dual of the 2022-23 season, the Oklahoma wrestling team trounced Rider 24-10 Sunday afternoon.
Rider (4-5, 2-1 MAC) entered the dual with three ranked wrestlers against the Sooners’ (8-5, 1-3 Big 12) six. OU’s win snaps its three-dual losing streak ahead of finishing the season against three top-20 opponents.
“It’s another good victory for the team,” head coach Lou Rosselli said. “We had some seniors that got to wrestle and won today. It’s exciting for Jacob and Carson to both win in their final dual at McCasland.”
On Senior Day, Jacob Butler strolled past Colton Washleski via a 6-1 decision in the 157-pound bout. With two takedowns in the first and second period, the senior soundly tied the dual up 3-3. Butler now has 36 victories in his collegiate career.
Following Butler, No. 17 Gerrit Nijenhuis tripped Hunter Mays up with 30 seconds remaining to break a 1-1 tie and win the 165-pound battle by a 3-1 decision.
In the 184-pound battle, Keegan Moore fended off a late rally by Isaac Dean with a RT point to grant him the 4-3 victory.
In his final bout at McCasland, Carson Berryhill was victorious over Asa Terrell 6-4 after earning the winning takedown with less than 30 seconds left. His win in the 197-pound bout powered the Sooners past the Broncs 12-6.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Bloomsburg wrestling team used five bonus point wins to cruise to a 34-11 win over Sacred Heart University, Sunday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 4-9 in duals for the season.
Senior Bronson Garber (Millersburg, Pa./Upper Dauphin) got things going for the Huskies with the first of four-straight bonus point wins as he earned a 16-0 tech fall at 125 pounds over Mike Manta. Michael Cassidy (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) picked up his first-career tech fall as he defeated Ben Davoli at 133 pounds 17-0 to give the Huskies a 10-0 lead.
Josh Mason (New Ringgold, Pa./Blue Mountain) continued to build his impressive resume with his seventh pin and ninth bonus point win of the season at 141 pounds. Mason got the fall at 3:35 over Dakota Asuncion to give the Huskies a 16-0 lead.
Cade Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) posted back-to-back pins for the Huskies as he got the fall at 6:36 over Chris Naegele at 149 pounds.

EIWA Conference Recap (2/8/23)
In this week’s action, Cornell won its second consecutive Ivy League Title, Drexel extended their win streak to 7 matches after a 3-0 weekend, and Max Leete earned his 11th pin of the year.
This week’s Outstanding Wrestler for me is Julian Ramirez of Cornell. His win over returning NCAA runner-up, Quincy Monday, has helped establish him as the top dog in the conference at a loaded 165 lbs bracket. He’s earned a co-OW award from me after his performance at the Cliff Keen Invitational. This will be his first outright award, and he’s the first repeat award winner. An interesting tidbit about Ramirez – a season ago, he beat defending national champ Shane Griffith in front of a home crowd. This past weekend, he defeated Monday in front of a home crowd. The guy excels in front of his Big Red crowd! He’ll be looking to keep the momentum into the last few matches and the postseason. Congrats to Julian.
American
The Eagles were on the road at Virginia. They dropped the dual 23-15, after a quick :23 pin by Max Leete at 125 lbs. This was his 11th of the year – now tied for the most in D1 wrestling. They had 3 more wins by decision from Jack Maida (133 lbs), Lucas White (174 lbs) and Will Jarrell (285 lbs). American wrestled hard in this dual. An interesting wrinkle to the lineup was having Raymond Lopez (who spent time at 125 and 133) in at 141 lbs. Maybe beefing him up is the best look for their lineup… We’ll follow that one into next week as they host Lock Haven and Air Force.
Army
The Black Knights were in Bethlehem, PA for an EIWA dual with Lehigh. Three wrestlers earned wins in the 26-9 defeat. The first win of the night was by Ethan Berginc (#31 @ 125 lbs) in overtime over a very solid Carter Bailey. Next, Dalton Harkins (165 lbs) snuck out a 2-1 win, which was followed up by a decision by Ben Pasiuk (#18 @ 174 lbs). It looks like Trae McDaniel is manning the 149 lb spot lately. He dropped a match in overtime to Max Brignola, a returning NCAA qualifier last season. Army caught Lehigh with a nearly 100% lineup, which has been rare for them. A good showing, though, for Army. This weekend, the Black Knights will be at Drexel for a dual on Saturday.
Binghamton
The Bearcats wrestled Princeton in a dual. They lost 28-10 with a lineup missing some firepower, mainly a ranked Brevin Cassella at 165 lbs. They did see a win from Anthony Sobotker at 133 lbs, by major decision, to tie up the match. At 149 lbs, Michael Zarif had a win over returning NCAA Qualifier, … rest of story at Intermatwrestle.com/articles/26490=Wrestling+News

Barczak gave DU its first lead of the day as he was triumphant by technical fall in 6:26. In a ranked matchup at 184, Bonino came up clutch in a sudden victory thriller to give Drexel a nine point advantage. The match was scoreless until Bonino escaped to start the second period. Cowboys Earn Tie Breaker Win Over No. 8 Missouri
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated its second top-10 opponent in a row with a 17-16 win over No. 8 Missouri Sunday that came to the third tiebreaker criteria of total match points scored.
With both teams winning five matches, four by decision and a major decision by Missouri’s Keegan O’Toole and OSU’s Daton Fix, the match was decided based on the third criteria of match points, which Oklahoma State outscored Missouri, 45-43.
“I’ll just say I’m sure glad we got Daton when we needed to win by 10 points at the end,” head coach John Smith said. “Probably not his greatest match, but a lot of awareness. I mean that first period was big time, being able to pick up two takedowns and near fall points. 149 and 141, Good efforts with a nice, tough win (at 141). Lost a tight one there at 149. I think the only matches that were really separated was 165 and 133. The rest of them were barnburners that came down to the third period and end of the match. Good job for Surber being aware of where he was at. Attacking [Rocky Elam] in some positions that he needed to attack him in. Hopefully he’ll kind of grow from this and make a run at some things, like All-American honors, those type of things when you have nice victories like this.”

Four Thoughts on Oklahoma State Wrestling’s Wins against Missouri and Michigan
Seth Duckworth recaps the Cowboys’ big weekend
What a wild weekend for Oklahoma State wrestling, as the Cowboys beat two top 10 teams with Michigan and Missouri. Let’s dive into four thoughts on everything that transpired on Friday and Sunday.
1. A big-time dual vs. Missouri
This may be the most obvious one, but what a monumental win for the Cowboys vs. Missouri on Sunday. I thought there was a chance heading into it, but if you would’ve told me Dustin Plott would lose and the Cowboys would win the dual, I would have thought you were crazy. But OSU holds on in a nailbiter to take out No. 8 Missouri. Great environment, great showing by the fans, and everything you want in a wrestling match. That was why and how dual meets can be great.
2. Bout at the Ballpark not as well attended as one would hope
Attendance at the Bout at the Ballpark took a nosedive from over 12,000 last year to around 2,000 this year. I think it’s a creative event and has its place in the sport, but it will need something different to be a success commercially.
3. Team hitting its stride?
I’ll admit, I had my doubts about Oklahoma State at various points early in the season, but things seem to be clicking now. The Cowboys are wrestling at a level we haven’t seen yet. Michigan was without a few starters, and Missouri has had some injury issues leading up to this. But, these were two really good wins and the most complete that Oklahoma State has wrestled this season. … rest of story at Pistolsfiringblog.com/four-thoughts-on-oklahoma-state-wrestlings-wins-against-missouri-and-michigan
Luke Surber Named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State’s 197-pounder Luke Surber earned Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after his upset over No. 1 Rocky Elam on Sunday, making it back-to-back weeks a Cowboy has won the award.
Surber went 2-0 on the weekend taking decisions over Michigan’s Rylan Rogers at Bout at the Ballpark, 6-2, and Missouri’s Elam, 5-4.
In a must-win match for the Cowboys against Missouri, Surber opened the scoring by taking Elam down with a minute to go in the first period. The final 15 seconds of the period was the difference in the match, consisting of an escape and takedown for Elam, followed by a reversal from Surber with seconds left in the period to take a 4-3 lead. From there, both wrestlers would escape … rest of story at OKstate.com/news/2023/2/7/cowboy-wrestling-luke-surber-named-big-12-wrestler-of-the-week
Ivy League Champs!
Cornell University Wrestling Tops Penn, Claims 42nd Ivy Title In Program History
ITHACA, N.Y. — With a meet seemingly ready to go down to the final match, Chris Foca and Jacob Cardenas had other ideas. Their bonus point victories allowed the Big Red to claim a 19-15 triumph over the 25th-ranked Quakers to cap an unbeaten Ivy dual season and clinching the program’s 42nd conference title in school history.
The win capped a Senior Day that honors the class of 2023, including three-time NCAA champion Yianni Diakomihalis, who earned an 8-3 win over No. 12 Doug Zapf in his final home match.
After trailing 9-6 at intermission, the Big Red won consecutive matches after the break to regain the lead, first tying it with a Julian Ramirez decision victory over Lucas Raveno at 165 to tie it at 12-12, then busting through with a third-period fall over No. 20 Nick Incontrera. With a comfortable lead, but in search of bonus points, Foca was able to turn what looked like a future stalemate position into a turn, getting near-fall before squaring Incontrera’s shoulders for the big six points at the 5:59 mark. The bonus points put Cornell in the driver’s seat with three matches to go. … rest of story at Cornellbigred.com/news/2023/2/5/wrestling-tops-penn-claims-42nd-ivy-title-in-program-history
Newberry To Become Associate Member Of Conference Carolinas In Men’s Wrestling
The Wolves will wrestle as part of sponsorship of the conference starting in 2023-2024 season
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Expanding on its previous co-sponsorship of men’s wrestling, Conference Carolinas announced today that it will sponsor the sport of men’s wrestling beginning with the start of the 2023-24 academic year.
Conference Carolinas and the South Atlantic Conference had been collaborating on men’s wrestling since the start of the 2018-19 academic year. The two conferences originally partnered to also sponsor field hockey, but the SAC began sole sponsorship of field hockey prior to the start of the current academic year.
The announcement of Conference Carolinas being the sole sponsor of men’s wrestling means that the current five SAC members (Coker, Emory & Henry, Limestone, Lincoln Memorial and Newberry) in men’s wrestling will now officially become associate members of Conference Carolinas with the commencement of the 2023-24 academic year.
In addition, Conference Carolinas is also thrilled to announce that the first official Conference Carolinas men’s wrestling season will feature 14 teams with Allen, Bluefield State and Montevallo also joining the league as associate members.
The eight join current Conference Carolinas member institutions Belmont Abbey, Emmanuel, King, Mount Olive and UNC Pembroke in addition to Lander, who has been an associate member of Conference Carolinas in men’s wrestling since 2020.
“We are incredibly thankful for the collaboration of the many men’s wrestling institutions in Conference Carolinas and the region for working together to make this a reality,” Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “Conference Carolinas has served as the main facilitator of our original men’s wrestling collaboration since its inception. We are truly excited that the sport has been built up so quickly over the last few years to allow us this opportunity, while also giving us the chance to welcome new associate members to continue building the sport throughout the region.”
Conference Carolinas will move to a two-division model with the 2023-24 academic year with the East Division featuring Allen, Belmont Abbey, Coker, Limestone, Mount Olive, Newberry and UNC Pembroke. The West Division will consist of Bluefield State, Emmanuel, Emory & Henry, King, Lander, Lincoln Memorial and Montevallo. … rest of story at Newberrywolves.com/news/2023/2/7/newberry-to-become-associate-member-of-conference-carolinas-in-mens-wrestling
