Cal Poly Remains Unbeaten in Pac-12 Duals, Beats Little Rock 25-10
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Brawley Lamer and Trevor Tinker scored wins over nationally ranked Little Rock wrestlers and Lawrence Saenz won by major decision as Cal Poly earned its third straight Pac-12 dual meet victory with a 25-10 verdict Sunday inside Mott Athletics Center.
Lamer snapped a 0-0 tie with a four-point near fall midway through the second period on his way to a 6-3 decision over No. 21 Triston Wills at 174 pounds. Lamer improved to 6-7 for the season.
Tinker earned his fourth straight victory at 285 pounds and raised his record for the year to 12-7 with a 3-2 decision against No. 32 Josiah Hall. All the scoring was accomplished in the first period with Tinker notching a takedown and Hill a reversal, but Tinker rode Hill out for the entire second and third periods for the decisive riding time point.
“We only have one job to do –wrestle hard for seven minutes,” said seventh-year Mustang head coach Jon Sioredas. “When we do our job, good things happen.”
Saenz earned Cal Poly’s lone bonus point with an 11-3 major decision over Jayden Gomez at 141. Saenz evened his record at 7-7 with an escape, takedown and four-point near fall in the second period and an escape and takedown in the final round for his second major decision of the year.
Mustang 165-pounder Legend Lamer and Little Rock’s Tyler Brennan failed to score any points until Lamer notched a takedown with four seconds remaining and Brennan quickly escaped. Lamer earned the 2-1 decision for his third consecutive triumph.
Cal Poly’s other winners, all via decision, were Ethan Rotondo at 133, Dom Demas at 149, Luka Wick at 157 and Jarad Priest at 184. Rotondo and Priest both won by 8-2 decisions while Demas earned a 6-4 decision and Wick 8-5.
“Great performance today up and down the lineup,” Sioredas said. “Our guys wrestled hard for seven minutes and stole some matches against a gritty team.”
The Mustangs are 3-0 in conference matches for the first time since the 2009-10 season when Cal Poly defeated Cal State Fullerton, CSU Bakersfield and Stanford in its first three duals en route to a 5-2 Pac-12 dual meet mark and third-place finish in the Pac-12 Championship. … rest of story at GOpoly.com/news/2023/2/5/wrestling-cal-poly-remains-unbeaten-in-pac-12-duals-beats-little-rock-25-10
