HAWKEYES DROP DUAL IN ANN ARBOR
ANN ARBOR, Michigan – The second ranked University of Iowa Men’s wrestling program fell on Friday evening to Michigan, 24-11, at the Crisler Center.
The Wolverines won the first five weights before intermission. The Hawkeyes won three matches and got bonus points in the 197-pound bout.
At 125 No. 12 Michael DeAugustino rode out fifth-ranked Drake Ayala in the first tiebreaker to get things started in the win column for the Wolverines.
Fourth-ranked Dylan Ragusin put together a 5-2 decision over No. 18 Cullan Schriever at 133. 19th ranked Sergio Lemley tallied an upset win at 141 with a 14-2 major decision over top-ranked Real Woods.
At 149 No. 6 Austin Gomez defeated Victor Voinovich III winning a 5-1 decision before 12th ranked Will Lewan sent Michigan to the break with a, 16-0, lead after one second of riding time gave him a 2-2 win in TB1 over No. 2 Jared Franek.
After the intermission Michael Caliendo got the Hawkeyes on the board with a 9-4 win over Beau Mantanona at 165. At 174 third-ranked Shane Griffith won via major decision over No. 8 Patrick Kennedy, 12-1. On a night to celebrate the Wolverines’ seniors, it was freshman Sergio Lemley who stole the show at 141 pounds, knocking off top-ranked Real Woods, 14-2, to hand the Hawkeye his first loss of the season and only his second in two years. Lemley, ranked 19th, broke the bout open with a pair of six-points moves — a second-period reversal to Woods’ back and, already in the driver’s seat late, a standing cradle for the takedown and four more back points in the final 15 seconds of the third. NC State Wrestling Takes Care of UNC, 33-6
RALEIGH — The NC State wrestling team defeated UNC, 33-6, Friday evening in front of a sold out Reynolds Coliseum. The win marks the 11th-consecutive win over the Tar Heels, dating back to 2013.
The Wolfpack won eight of ten bouts, tallying three wins over ranked opponents. The rivals started the evening at 157 pounds with #11/6 Ed Scott facing off with Sonny Santiago. The first period was heated for the two and ended with a four-all tie. Scott recorded an early escape in the second period and ended with a 5-4 lead. Santiago tied things five-all in the third, sending the dual into an overtime period. UNC recorded a four-point near fall to end the bout on top, 12-5.
#18/14 Derek Fields and Isaias Estrada went scoreless through the first period in the 165 weight class. Fields began the second period with an escape to take a 1-0 lead. Estrada was given a stalling warning and Fields closed out the period with a three-point takedown to extend his lead to 4-0. After taking charge in the final period, Fields won 10-1 by major decision.
Tyler Eischens of UNC got an escape to start the second period, taking a 4-1 lead. Faison responded with a three-point takedown to tie things up four-all, but ended the period trailing by one. After the two battled through the third, the dual went into an overtime period. UNC took their second win of the evening after Eischens defeated Faision 13-6.
Redshirt-freshman Dylan Fishback came out hot and secured two three-point takedowns to hold a 6-2 lead over #23 Gavin Kane. Fishback took the lead into the third period after an escape and three-point takedown gave him a comfortable 10-2 lead. Fishback ended the dual with a major decision defeat, 14-3, over Kane with 2:20 of riding time. RALEIGH, N.C. – The eighth-ranked NC State wrestling program defeated North Carolina (8-7, 0-2 ACC) Friday night in Atlantic Coast Conference action, 33-6.
Carolina earned two ranked victories in the opening three matches, with sudden victory verdicts from Sonny Santiago (157) and Tyler Eischens (174).
With the match against the Wolfpack beginning at 157 pounds, Santiago earned the decision over No. 6 Ed Scott, helping Carolina jump out to an early lead. Two matches later, Eischens clipped No. 27 Alex Faison, in an overtime match of his own. Up next, the Tar Heels return to Carmichael Arena next Friday night for the ACC home opener, welcoming Pitt to Chapel Hill.

Camels come from behind, win matchup versus App State
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell wrestling won the final four matches in a 22-16 come-from-behind victory against SoCon rival Appalachian State Friday evening at Gore Arena.
Campbell improved to 8-3 and 2-0 in conference play. App State falls to 4-3 and 1-1 in SoCon matches.
The match began with Anthony Molton earning a tech fall over Chad Bellis in 5:20. Molton has now won eight straight matches. The Mountaineers would then take a 16-5 lead by winning the subsequent five matches from 133 to 165, but they would score only one bonus-point victory in that stretch.
The Fighting Camels would win the final four matches with two pins to complete the comeback. Austin Murphy got the Camels back on the board at 174 pounds with an 8-4 decision over Luke Uliano.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — App State split the 10 matches with a senior-led Campbell squad in a showdown of top-30 teams, posting five straight victories from 133 to 165 pounds, but four veterans for the Camels closed out the dual with victories to give them a 22-16 win against the Mountaineers on Friday night.
In front of a large, loud crowd with two traditional SoCon powers squaring off, App State (4-3, 1-1) jumped out to a 16-5 lead over Campbell (8-3, 2-0) thanks to consecutive wins from Ethan Oakley (14-8 decision at 133), Ike Byers (4-0 decision at 141), Cody Bond (1-0 decision at 149), Tommy Askey (15-5 major decision at 157) and Will Miller (8-2 decision at 165).
With four ranked or title-winning seniors rounding out their lineup, the Camels used a three-point decision at 174 pounds, a six-point fall at 184, a three-point decision at 197 and a six-point fall in the heavyweight division to turn an 11-point deficit into a six-point team victory — Campbell was penalized one team point for its post-victory conduct at heavyweight.
In a battle of top-25 wrestlers at 133, Oakley trailed 7-1 against Domenic Zaccone before getting his first takedown with 1:01 left in the second period, and he trailed 8-5 heading to the third period. A go-ahead takedown with 1:28 left, followed by a four-point near fall, gave Oakley a sizable lead in a 14-8 decision that pushed his career dual record to 16-0.
Byers, a fifth-year redshirt junior making just the third dual start of his career, won a 4-0 decision over Chris Rivera in the next match. Chaz McDonald got the Chattanooga Mocs off to a roaring start in a Southern Conference win over Davidson

CHATTANOOGA—The Chattanooga Mocs claimed its eighth dual win of the season with a 28-13 triumph over Davidson Sunday afternoon in Maclellan Gym. The Mocs have won five in a row on the season and have 33 consecutive dual wins over the Wildcats with nary a defeat.
It was a dominant start. Chaz McDonald’s first period pin set an early tone followed by a major at 133 by No. 31 Blake Boarman. Isaiah Powe and Matthew Williams followed with tech falls at 141 and 149 followed by another major from Lincoln Heck at 157.
It’s the first dual win this season that was clinched after the 174 weight class. After jumping out to a 24-0 lead through 157, the Mocs gave up decisions at 165, 174 and 184 to cut the lead to 24-9, but also made certain any path to a win for the Wildcats was halted.

North Carolina Wrestling Clips No. 23 Navy Sunday Afternoon
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Six North Carolina wrestlers won matches Sunday, in the non-conference finale victory against No. 23 Navy, 20-17. Carolina claimed a technical fall from Spencer Moore (125) and five decisions courtesy of Lachlan McNeil (141), Sonny Santiago (157), Tyler Eischens (174), Gavin Kane (184) and Max Shaw (197). At 141 pounds, McNeil defeated No. 12 Josh Hoderhandt by decision, for his 10th ranked victory of the campaign. Tar Heel 174-pounder Tyler Eischens collected a last second takedown in the third period, to send the match with No. 27 Danny Wask to sudden victory. In the overtime period, Eischens secured a takedown, for his first ranked victory of the season. Up next, the Tar Heels travel to No. 8 NC State Friday, meeting up with the Wolfpack at 8:30 PM. On Friday, the Camels host the Mountaineers in the Camels’ fourth appearance on CFFC Match Day on UFC Fight Pass. The Camels are 3-2 in dual matches broadcast on UFC Fight Pass, with wins over Army, Wyoming, and North Dakota State.
Campbell is looking to avenge a 22-14 loss last season. App State took six of the 10 individual matches. Between the two teams, 10 wrestlers are ranked in the NCAA Coaches’ Rankings (released 1/22).

Mount Olive earns victory at Allen, 26-18

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 31) – After collecting six victories on Wednesday night, the University of Mount Olive men’s wrestling team extended their winning streak following a 26-18 win at Allen in a Conference Carolinas dual meet.
With the win, the Trojans have won nine consecutive duals dating back to early December and improve to 11-1 overall behind a 6-1 mark in league duals. Mount Olive remains in a close battle in the east division with Newberry and UNC Pembroke boasting identical records in the conference standings. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets drop to 7-8 this season with a 1-6 mark in league meets.
In the 125-weight class, junior Lens Mathurin delivered a dominant performance over Reco Robinson with a 23-8 tech fall before redshirt junior Timothy Decatur (133) registered a 17-1 tech fall against Trent Bowser to build a 10-0 advantage for the Trojans. Allen closed the gap to 10-9 by claiming a fall at 141 and followed up with a victory via a 10-6 decision at 149.
Junior Jake Nicolosi responded with a 13-5 major decision versus Dharrin Smith in the 157-weight class before redshirt sophomore Seth Thomas produced a fall over Ya`Donnis Hardaway to extend the lead, 20-9. Cowboys Cruise to Top-Five Win Against Iowa State
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team downed No. 4 Iowa State, 21-12, Saturday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena for its second win over a top-five opponent this season. OSU is now 10-0, matching its longest winning streak to open a season since 2018-19, while the Cyclones dropped to 10-2.
In a dual that featured five top-10 matchups, the Cowboys took six of 10 matches on the night and were led by bonus-point wins from Daton Fix, Dustin Plott and Jersey Robb. Oklahoma State now owns two wins over top-five opponents, its first time doing so since 2018-19.
Additionally, the Cowboys have won 11 of their past 12 against ranked teams and 15 of their past 16 overall, as well as four of their last five against top-10 teams. With the win, head coach John Smith now trails Harold Nichols by just six victories at 486 for second-most in Division I wrestling history.
The Cowboys took control of the dual right from the start, winning each of the first three matches. For the second night in a row, No. 20 Troy Spratley used a takedown in the first period to pick up the 4-2 decision over No. 25 Kysen Terukina. Spratley took down a pair of ranked opponents this weekend and is 8-2 in dual action. Third-ranked Daton Fix then gave OSU a 7-0 lead behind a dominant 11-3 major decision against No. 7 Evan Frost, his sixth-straight bonus-point win and second top-10 win of the year.
Perhaps the dual of the night was at 141 pounds, as No. 9 Tagen Jamison battled No. 8 Anthony Echemendia in a big swing bout. The two wrestlers went to sudden victory after trading escapes, but Jamison got the key takedown for his fifth top-10 victory this season.
Following No. 17 Sammy Alvarez’s defeat to No. 10 Casey Swiderski, Teague Travis got the job done against Jason Kraisser, winning by decision, 8-2. Travis ended the weekend with a 14-2 record and has earned wins in nine of 10 duals on the year.
Second-ranked Dustin Plott made easy work of No. 10 Will Feldkamp, nearly earning a technical fall as he settled for a 17-3 major decision. The senior is 19-2 on the year, while posting bonus points 16 times and beating three top-10 wrestlers.

Panther wrestling grabs seventh straight dual win over Oklahoma
UNI bounces back from loss at Oklahoma State with dominating performance over the Sooners. NORMAN, Okla. — One night after falling short against the nation’s fifth-ranked program in Stillwater, UNI wrestling rode the Panther Train south to McCasland Fieldhouse on Saturday night and secured a 30-12 dual win over the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners.
Northern Iowa picked up six victories, all in bonus points to tie as season-high for a single dual, all while securing the program’s seventh consecutive dual win over the Sooners, the longest streak in the series which dates back to 1926. UNI’s win also included three pins, the most in a single dual this year.

Starting off the night for the Panther Train at 125 pounds, No. 30 Trever Anderson matched up against Conrad Hendriksen. Giving up two takedowns in the beginning of the match, Anderson took control in the third period with a takedown straight into a pair of back points, but ultimately came up short in a 7-6 loss.
Julian Farber brought the heat at 133 pounds facing off withJace Koelzer. Gaining a takedown in the early seconds of the first period, Farber held on to secure riding time, and added another takedown, plus a reversal for a 9-1 major decision victory. Cael Rahnavardi would come up short at 149 pounds against Willie McDougald, dropping a narrow 3-2 decision.
Eleventh-ranked Ryder Downey (157 pounds) scored big for the Panthers against #31/33 Jared Hill, after earning himself multiple back points for a 13-1 major decision win. BALTIMORE, Md. – The No. 20 West Virginia University wrestling team closed out the weekend with a 40-3 win over Morgan State inside Talmadge L. Hill Field House on Sunday afternoon.
West Virginia (9-3) claimed three technical falls in three of the first four matches of the day to jump out to a 15-3 lead and never looked back from that point, scoring 25 unanswered points in the final six bouts of the contest. WVU improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 at MSU (1-15) in the all-time series. It also marks the seventh time the Mountaineers have scored over 30 team points this season.

Cardenas’ Big Win, Resilient Efforts Lift Big Red to Signature Win
ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell senior Jacob Cardenas earned one of the biggest victories of his career, and several other wrestlers turned in gutsy efforts to lift the No. 14 Big Red wrestling team to a signature victory over No. 2 Missouri at Newman Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Big Red (7-3) won six matches, all against ranked opponents, en route to a 20-16 win over the Tigers (8-1), who suffered their first dual loss this season. Cornell matched its highest-ranked win in program history and earned its highest-ranked victory in a home dual. The Big Red’s last win over the No. 2 team in the country came against Iowa State at the National Duals in January 2009. Mike Grey, The David Dunlop ’59 Head Coach of Wrestling, was the winner at 133 pounds in that dual.
No. 8 Cardenas (197 pounds) sealed the victory for Big Red with a 4-0 win over No. 3 Rocky Elam, a three-time NCAA All-American. Taking on the Dakota schools at home Air Force took a 32-9 loss to SDSU but got their first conference win 21-13 over NDSU. After dropping 133-157 the Falcons won the rest of the matches, including major decisions from Giano Petrucelli and Sam Wolf. While they didn’t have that same success against the Jackrabbits they did get bonus points from Wyatt Hendrickson. Sam Wolf was majored by Bennett Berge, only his third loss of the season. While they didn’t win these matches, Air Force was within a takedown from 125-141 against ranked opponents.

Iowa State took a trip to the Oklahoma schools and came back with another win and their first conference loss this season. They got Casey Swiderski back in the lineup at 149, but lost Cody Chittum for the weekend with a concussion. Against OU, they dominated to a 37-4 win, winning nine matches and six bonus point victories. Casey Swiderski beat 2022 Big 12 finalist Willie McDougald 8-3. Jason Kraisser stepped in for Chittum and beat a ranked Jared Hill. MJ Gaitan made a statement with a second-period pin over Tate Picklo and Yonger Bastida continued to dominate from neutral with a 14-4 major over Josh Heindselman.
The next day the Cyclones took on fellow top five OK State but lost 21-12. They dropped the first three matches as Terukina and Echemendia were unable to score and Evan Frost was unable to slow down Daton Fix. Jason Kraisser lost some scrambles to Teague Travis, while Will Feldkamp couldn’t keep up with Plott’s pressure, narrowly avoiding being teched. Casey Swiderski got another strong win over Sammy Alvarez. David Carr handled Izzak Olejnik 8-1, while MJ Gaitan beat Brayden Thompson in overtime. Julien Broderson gave up a dual-changing major decision to true freshman Jersey Robb, giving a deficit that Yonger Bastida’s win over Doucet was unable to cover.

The Tigers went on a long road trip east and came back with another conference win and their first loss of the season. They started with a 30-6 win over a tough West Virginia team that saw bonus points from Noah Surtin, Kade Moore, and Brock Mauller. Josh Edmond and Logan Gioffre lost competitive matches to Jordan Titus and Ty Watters in entertaining matches. Gioffre took injury time for a rib injury against Watters and proceeded to miss the Cornell dual, an injury to monitor with OK State coming up.

ACC Weekly Recap (1/30/2024)
We had an exciting opening week of ACC action on Friday. While the team scores went as expected, there were some big individual upsets. We saw several wrestlers return to the lineup after being out with injuries and making an immediate impact. It seems that most teams have settled on a lineup for the rest of the season, but we will see a few wrinkles be thrown in along the way to spice it up a little (I love the rule allowing five dates for true freshmen…).
All three duals on Friday were lopsided affairs but left us with a lot of good takeaways.
1. NC State and Virginia Tech are the early favorites for the dual title.
The Wolfpack traveled to Pitt and took eight of ten bouts; their only losses were upsets at 141 and 184. The Hokies hosted the Tar Heels and after losing the opening match in sudden victory, they reeled off nine straight wins. Thankfully the ACC scheduling is better this year and their dual will be the final match instead of the opening dual as it was last year.
2. 141 is bonkers.
#27 Cole Matthews beat #4 Ryan Jack. #17 Tom Crook beat #5 Lachlan McNeil. Jack Gioffre has been in and out of the rankings this year and has the potential to hang with any of these guys. Jack and McNeil will meet this week. I have no idea how this is going to shake out in dual matchups, but suffice to say, that the ACC tournament is going to be fire at 141.
3. Virginia looks rejuvenated with five (?!?!) starters back in the lineup after returning from injury.
The Hoos have dealt with a wild run of injuries but returned half of their lineup in time for ACC duals. Those five were a combined 7-1 on the weekend. They shut out Duke 45-0 in a dominant showing on Friday and dispatched American 36-6 on Sunday. The Cavaliers will face a much tougher test when they host Virginia Tech on Friday, but I’m glad to see them healthy and getting back on track.
4. Do we learn anything from early upsets?
There were a lot of upsets on paper, I’m interested to see how those line up over the next four weeks. The Wolfpack will have a tough choice to make at 125 between Jarrett Trombley and Jakob Camacho.

On Friday night just after 9 p.m. ET, Ohio State’s Nick Feldman electrified the Covelli Center in one of the biggest moments of the college wrestling weekend.

With the dual against Michigan on the line and his match against two-time All-American Lucas Davison tied 1-1 early in the third, Feldman spun around, brought Davison to the mat and scored a critical three-point takedown against the Wolverine. Davison looked to retaliate and took a few half-shots in the final minute, but as time ticked down and Feldman fended off his efforts, the Ohio State faithful came to their feet. They knew their freshman star had won his bout and won the dual for the Bucks.
Feldman’s win demonstrated that he’s an All-American threat, and his result will skyrocket him in the rankings.
But this match, and Ohio State’s subsequent win over Michigan, wasn’t the only storyline of the weekend.
Between Little Rock’s victory over Oregon State, Vito Arujau’s return, Cornell’s toppling of Missouri and so much more, the last three days in college wrestling produced tons of storylines.
Here’s a complete breakdown of the seven biggest moments (in addition to Ohio State’s win over Michigan) that stand out from a weekend of high-intensity action in dozens of duals.
High schooler Jax Forrest shakes up collegiate expectations at 125
The 125-pound weight class is wild. It’s a known fact, and it’s been the biggest storyline all year.
Last week, Matt Ramos became the headliner at the weight after stopping Iowa’s Drake Ayala in Carver-Hawkeye Arena and teching Alan Koehler of Nebraska. Ramos notched another win over the weekend by way of a tight 8-6 decision against Michael Spangler to hold on to his No. 1 spot, but the rankings beneath him will shift once again as the No. 2 spot, in particular, potentially opens up.

Lehigh’s Luke Stanich, a true freshman, held that No. 2 spot earlier this week after putting together an 10-1 record through January 13 with wins over No. 3 Eric Barnett, No. 6 Cooper Flynn and No. 13 Brett Ungar. He was quietly accumulating an exceptionally impressive record and looking like he could compete for a national title.
Let’s be clear: Stanich is still that guy. His wins are still valuable, and his skills are still top notch.
But Stanich’s No. 2 spot in the country is in question after the Mountain Hawk suffered a loss to high school sophomore Jax Forrest in the finals of the Mat Town Open II in sudden victory.
Forrest isn’t the only high schooler to beat a top-ranked 125-pounder. Ramos himself lost to Marcus Blaze earlier this year in a performance that, much like Stanich’s, won’t impact his college record but can impact confidence. Ramos took three additional losses in the month following his Blaze match, but he’s been on a winning streak since then and hasn’t dropped a bout since Dec. 1. Stanich will similarly have the chance to get himself back on track with two more ranked matches against No. 32 Ethan Berginc of Army and No. 10 Richie Figueroa of Arizona State before the conference tournament. He’ll remain the highest-ranked EIWA wrestler, and a conference championship could give him a big advantage in NCAA seeding.
If Stanich drops in the rankings (which isn’t a guarantee since his loss to Forrest doesn’t count as a college loss), Wisconsin’s Eric Barnett could be considered for the No. 2 spot. The Badger All-American went 2-0 on the weekend with wins over No. 12 Caleb Smith 5-3 and Tristan Lujan 4-2. Barnett’s only losses are to Iowa State’s Kysen Terukina — who split his matches this weekend with a win over Conrad Hendrickson and loss to No. 20 Troy Spratley — and, ironically, Stanich. … story at … NCAA.com/news/7-key-takeaways-last-weekend-college-wrestling
