The National Wrestling Hall of Fame has taken a significant step forward in its mission to honor and recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the sport of wrestling.
In a recent development, the Hall of Fame’s State Chapter program has proudly announced a strategic partnership with the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA).
This collaboration is set to enrich the Hall of Fame’s efforts in identifying and celebrating deserving individuals across various levels of the sport. The partnership with NCWA, an organization deeply rooted in collegiate wrestling, opens new avenues to acknowledge the achievements and dedication of coaches, officials, and contributors in the collegiate wrestling community. “We are thrilled to announce our partnership with the National Collegiate Wrestling Association, a key player in fostering growth and creating opportunities within the wrestling community,” said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director, National Wrestling Hall of Fame. “This collaboration allows us to work together to identify and honor coaches, officials, and contributors who have made significant and positive impacts on our sport. Recognizing these deserving individuals is not just about celebrating their achievements; it’s about acknowledging their role in shaping the future of wrestling. We believe this partnership will greatly assist in our mission to celebrate those who have dedicated themselves to the advancement of wrestling.” “The NCWA is extremely excited to deepen our partnership with the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. This collaboration goes beyond just strengthening ties; it’s a pivotal step towards celebrating the unsung heroes of wrestling,” said Jim Giunta, Founder and Executive Director, NCWA. “Our focus is not only on reinforcing this partnership, but also on aiding the Hall of Fame in identifying and honoring noteworthy individuals, particularly the deserving coaches and officials from our conference.”
State Chapters honor individuals with the following awards:
Lifetime Service to Wrestling to coaches, officials and contributors who have given 20 years or more of dedication to the development of leadership and citizenship in the youth through the sport of wrestling. Medal of Courage is presented to former wrestler who has overcome what appear to be insurmountable challenges, which may be physical, mental or other disabilities that make their achievements all the more uplifting.
Outstanding American recognizes former wrestlers who are highly successful in other walks of life and use the disciplines learned in wrestling. Nominations for State Chapter awards can be made at https://bit.ly/NWHOFStateChapterNominationForm

The State Chapter program was established by the Hall of Fame in 1993 to honor and recognize coaches, officials and others at the grassroots level of wrestling. This select group represents the best qualities of wrestling and are instrumental to the sport’s continued success and growth.
The NCWA, known for its dedication to the growth and development of college wrestling, brings to the table a wealth of knowledge and a network that spans numerous colleges and universities. This alliance will facilitate a more comprehensive recognition process, ensuring that achievements at the collegiate level are celebrated and remembered.
The NCWA was formed by Giunta in 1997 and began competing in 1998 with 18 teams and 116 athletes. Today, the NCWA has over 150 teams, 2,500 current athletes and over 35,000 alumni across America and Canada. … story at … NWHOF.org/National-wrestling-hall-of-fame-state-chapter-program-partners-with-national-collegiate-wrestling-association

Prendergast avenges loss, wins historic state title

GREENSBORO — The only time South Brunswick senior wrestler Lillian Prendergast was on her back this season was when dad and coach, David, fell on top of her while celebrating her championship Saturday in the state championships.
Prendergast won the 100-pound title in the first girls wrestling state tournament sanctioned by the N.C. High School Athletic Association. The girls — in one classification — wrestled on one mat in the center of the cavernous Greensboro Coliseum at the same time the boys wrestled on four mats — for four classifications — beside the center mat. The Coliseum was nearly a sellout.
The significance of the event meant as much to Lillian as her championship. “It’s definitely amazing to see,” she said. “I remember going to tournaments, before I got to high school, seeing one or two girls in a tournament. There wasn’t very much out there. My brother wrestled a girl here at the state tournament in 2011, when it was basically unheard of to hear a girl wrestle.
“So to see the growth and the amount of people that have come out, that have done it, even though it is one of the most uncomfortable sports, it’s great to see the passion that a lot of these girls are getting from it. You have your few wrestlers at the top and you have your younger girls — they go out and get beat but they’re still coming back, they’re still coming to practice and they’re still competing.”
Lillian’s mom, Shawna, was the scorekeeper at Lillian’s high school matches. Shawna, too, was thrilled by the state event. “I think the thing that excited me the most,” she said, “was the fact that our ladies are out there now. That is huge. We have been here for 20 years and this is the first time we got to see girls showcase (their wrestling). They’re here in the Greensboro Coliseum. This was just spectacular to see. That was what was the most emotional, seeing that.”
Rivals meet for title
Prendergast won the title by beating Corinth Holders junior Anna Ockerman 2-0. They know each other well. Entering the match, they had wrestled each other six times. “We have wrestled each other so much that we both kind of know certain things about each other,” Lillian said. “It’s hard to pregame because we know she’s practicing what to defend on me, and I’m doing the same with her.”
Of those six previous matches, Ockerman had won four. Last season she beat Prendergast in the Girls Invitational East Regional final, winning by fall with 31 seconds left, and last season she beat Prendergast 2-0 in the match for third place in the 100-pound class in the Girls Wrestling Invitational, the de facto state tournament.
This season, Prendergast wrestled Ockerman on Dec. 28 for the title in the Gate City Grapple and Prendergast prevailed 6-2. But in the East Regional on Feb. 3, Ockerman beat Prendergast 4-1 for the title. The loss was the first of the season for Prendergast. … story and more pictures at … Stateportpilot.com/Article_42c0cca8-d0f3

ADAM HALL NAMED NEXT HEAD COACH OF UTAH VALLEY UNIVERSITY WRESTLING

OREM, Utah — Adam Hall will be the next head coach of the Utah Valley University wrestling program, director of athletics Dr. Jared Sumsion announced on Thursday. Hall will take over the program following the conclusion of the NCAA Championships in March. Hall is currently in his ninth season on staff at No. 8 North Carolina State, where he’s worked under head coach Pat Popolizio since 2015. In 2019, Hall was promoted to associate head coach. “Adam Hall is poised and ready for this opportunity and we’re delighted he will be a Wolverine,” Sumsion said. “He’s had proven success with one of the top programs in the country and stood out among an amazing group of candidates. We’re elated to see Utah Valley Wrestling grow under his leadership as he builds this program on hard work, discipline, integrity, and grit. He is a servant leader who embodies the fearlessness of a wolverine.”
“I am overjoyed to become the next head coach of Utah Valley University Wrestling. I first thank my family for supporting me through the hiring process. I also want to thank President Astrid Tuminez, Vice President Val Peterson, Athletic Director Jared Sumsion, and the rest of the search committee for believing in my vision to take the program to the next level. The West, and specifically the state of Utah, has a strong history of successful college wrestlers and I am excited to build on that tradition. I look forward to creating a new level of success in Orem with the best young men who fit the mold and mentality of the program. I have spent the past 13 seasons preparing myself for this moment and I am incredibly excited to have the opportunity. Above all, I am grateful that God has blessed my family and me with this new journey.”

Wrestling Associate Head Coach Takes Lead Gig at Utah Valley
RALEIGH – Wrestling’s associate head coach, Adam Hall, has been named as the next head coach at Utah Valley, as announced on Thursday.  After nine seasons with the Wolfpack Wrestling team, Adam Hall has accepted the position of head coach at Utah Valley following the 2024 NCAA Tournament. This announcement comes after current head coach, Greg Williams, has decided to step down to retire after leading the program since the 2006-07 season.
The Idaho native was promoted to his current role prior to the 2019-20 season. During his time in Raleigh he has helped coach the program to six ACC titles, seven top-20 teamNCAA finishes, and five top-10 recruiting classes in the last seven years. In just his first season with the Wolfpack, Hall helped NC State to one of its best seasons in 2015-16. NC State won the 2016 ACC Championship, the first at NC State since 2007.
Prior to his stint at NC State, Hall began his collegiate coaching career at Columbia for four years as an assistant coach. During that time he also earned his Master of Science in Sport Management in 2015.  His experience comes from his time as a two-time All-American and two-time PAC-10 Champion at Boise State from 2007-2011, in addition to qualifying for the NCAA Tournament all four years of his collegiate career. … story at … GOpack.com/Wrestling-associate-head-coach-takes-lead-gig-at-utah-valley

Penn State, Oklahoma State storm into final week of dual season unbeaten

Manheim, Pennsylvania – In picking up their 54th straight dual meet victory, top-ranked Penn State won the Big Ten regular season title over the weekend and remained No. 1 in the most recent NWCA Division I Men’s Wrestling Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.
The Nittany Lions (11-0) rallied past No. 3 Nebraska 22-13 to finish 8-0 in the Big Ten and lock up the school’s fourth straight regular season title and 10th in the last 13 seasons.
With one dual left on the schedule – Edinboro this coming Sunday – the Nittany Lions currently hold the fifth longest dual meet win streak in major college wrestling history and 13th longest across all divisions. Despite the loss, Nebraska (11-2) remained third this week.
The major college dual win streak record is shared by Oklahoma State (twice) and Iowa at 69 in a row. The second-ranked Cowboys will head into their Sunday dual with the Hawkeyes in Gallagher-Iba Arena with a 14-0 mark this season. The Cowboys beat rival Oklahoma 34-9 in the second Bedlam match of the season.
Iowa (11-2) remained fourth this week after beating Wisconsin 34-5. No. 6 Ohio State beat Michigan State 38-7, while Missouri improved to 10-2 and remained seventh after beating North Dakota State 32-6 and coming from behind to beat No. 11 South Dakota State 21-19 in Brookings.
Missouri heavyweight Zach Elam picked up a first-minute fall to give Missouri the win in the dual’s final match. NC State remained No. 8 after beating then-No. 9 Cornell 24-9 in Raleigh. The Wolfpack improved to 15-2 on the year and will host rival Virginia Tech on Friday with the ACC regular season title on the line.
No. 10 Michigan beat Indiana 30-6.
No. 13 Virginia Tech put itself in position to challenge NC State for the ACC title with a 26-12 win over then-No. 22 Pittsburgh. The Hokies are 9-3 on the season. The Pac-12 got shaken up over the weekend as then-No. 20 Arizona State used a late Cohlton Schultz fall to beat then-No. 16 Stanford 18-17. The next day, then-No. 21 Oregon State beat the Cardinal 29-11.
That left Little Rock, in just the program’s fifth season, the Pac-12 dual meet champions for 2023-24. The Trojans moved up to No. 17 this week. Arizona State, Stanford and Oregon State all come in ranked 19-20-21 this week.
Previously winless Northwestern earned its first Big Ten victory of the season, beating then-No. 23 Indiana 19-18, knocking the Hoosiers out of the Top 25. The new entry this week is Appalachian State, which joins No. 22 Campbell as the only two teams from the SoCon ranked in the poll. It’s the first time the conference has had two teams in the Top 25 since November 29, 2016. … story at … NWCAonline.com/NWCA-Penn-state-oklahoma-state-storm-into-final-week-of-dual-season-unbeaten
