#18 Little Rock Wrestling Bests Both SIUE and CSU-Bakersfield to Close Home Slate
LITTLE ROCK – It’s a good feeling to wrap up the conference schedule and home slate with two wins, and that’s exactly what #18 Little Rock wrestling did this afternoon at the Jack Stephens Center to cap off a magical season in front of the home crowd. The Trojans took out Pac-12 members CSU-Bakersfield 37-6 before defeating SIUE 33-6 in back-to-back matches, their 13th and 14th dual wins this season, respectively.
Little Rock moves to 3-0 against CSU-Bakersfield overall and 4-1 in the Pac-12, which secures at least a second-place finish in the conference for the regular season. First place is still up for grabs, depending on how Stanford wrestles against Arizona State and Oregon State next weekend. The Trojans took out SIUE for the first time in their fourth meeting. “Great way to end the defense of our home turf this year,” said head coach Neil Erisman, giving props to Joseph Bianchi, Tyler Brennan and Triston Wills for going 2-0 on the day in their final matches at home. “Such a great way seeing all the seniors get a win. We’ve got a lot of appreciation and gratefulness for these guys.”
Along with Chase Tebbets nabbing a pin in an extra match against CSU-Bakersfield and Josh Sarpy stepping in at 133 pounds to win the bout in the first dual, the seniors had a perfect day. Tyler Brennan was a highlight for the Trojans, collecting two pins to bring his total to 10 this season. He stuck his first opponent in less than a minute, while Brennan was on his way to a tech fall in his second match against SIUE, securing the fall within the last minute of the third period. The 10 pins from the Frisco, Texas native is a program-high. A solid pair of major decisions from Joseph Bianchi moved him to 20 wins on the year, with 10 of those coming from duals to prove his worth as an addition to the starting lineup halfway through the season. The older Bianchi finished perfect in duals against Pac-12 opponents. Meanwhile, Triston Wills picked up a first-period technical fall in his match for welcomed bonus points versus CSU-Bakersfield followed by a decision against SIUE, hitting 16 wins this year to tie his career-high. … story at … LRtrojans.com/Lttle-rock-wrestling-defeats-siue-and-csu-bakersfield-to-close-home-slate

Cyclones Top Panthers in Hilton, 27-14
AMES, Iowa – No. 4 Iowa State took care of No. 17 UNI, 27-14, in wrestling dual action Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones improve to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big 12, while the Panthers fall to 6-6 overall and 5-2 vs. Big 12 competition. The Cyclones won six matches and recorded bonus point victories in five of them, including a quartet of technical falls en route to their fifth-straight victory over the Panthers. Evan Frost (133), Casey Swiderski (149), David Carr (165) and Yonger Bastida (285) each ended their matches early with technical fall triumphs to highlight the win.
Iowa State held a 28-13 advantage in the takedown column. At 133 pounds, No. 8 Evan Frost registered a technical fall vs. UNI’s Julian Farber, 19-4. Farber got a first-period takedown and later got in on a single leg and appeared to take a big lead. But Frost countered, notched a takedown, a four-point near fall, and cruised the rest of the way. Iowa State’s lone non-bonus-point victory was perhaps its most important, as No. 9 Anthony Echemendia prevailed in the top-10 matchup at 141 … story at … Cyclones.com/Cyclones-top-panthers-in-hilton-27-11

Cowboys Improve to 13-0 with Big Win over South Dakota State
STILLWATER – Behind two falls and three wins in sudden victory, the second-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team took care of No. 12 South Dakota State, 31-6, Saturday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU continued its perfect season at 13-0 as South Dakota State dropped to 11-3.
As they have for much of the season, the Cowboys took control of the dual from the start, winning each of the first six bouts. Oklahoma State racked up 16 takedowns compared to SDSU’s six and picked up three bonus-point wins en route to its second biggest margin of victory this season. The Cowboys have stepped up in critical situations all season long, compiling a 13-3 record in dual bouts that reach extra time. Oklahoma State has now defeated a ranked opponent in nine straight duals, its longest streak since 2004, and leads the nation with 11 total ranked wins. The Cowboys also moved to 7-0 in Big 12 competition, are the only undefeated record in the conference and 16-1 in their last 17 duals against league foes. With the win, head coach John Smith trails Harold Nichols by just three victories at 489 for second-most in Division I wrestling history. “I thought South Dakota State did a great job and is a really tough team,” associated head coach Coleman Scott said. “Did a good job getting three overtime wins, but you have to go out and score earlier than that. Overall, (we) found some things late that you like to see, but it’s not really what we’re looking for. Good to see Jordan (Williams) go out and let it fly. Got two takedowns before the cradle, so it was nice to see. Good job by the guys tonight as a whole.” … story at … OKstate.com/Cowboy-wrestling-cowboys-improve-to-13-0-with-big-win-over-south-dakota-state

Big 12 Weekly Recap (2/6/2024)
This week was a wild one in the Big 12 with both individual and team upsets. Oklahoma State has now beaten Iowa State and Missouri, firmly establishing themselves at the top of the Big 12. South Dakota State is the only other school undefeated in conference after two more dominating wins, setting up another huge Big 12 dual. California Baptist got only their second Big 12 conference win of all time and first over a ranked opponent with a win over Air Force. West Virginia and Northern Iowa had an under-the-radar dual filled with wild matches. With the dual season close to an end, it’s clear that many Big 12 teams are developing and nearly ready to peak for the postseason.
Air Force (Overall: 3-6; Conference: 1-5): Dual Results
Air Force dropped a conference dual against California Baptist 21-15. The Falcons got wins from Giano Petrucelli, Noah Blake, Sam Wolf, and Wyatt Hendrickson. NCAA DI Rankings Updated (2/6/2024)
We’ve got a new number one at 141 lbs! After Beau Bartlett’s big win over Jesse Mendez, coupled with the previous number one Real Woods losing via major decision to Sergio Lemley, Bartlett has ascended to number one. Yesterday on The First Word, Willie Saylor, speculated that this was probably happening, but also mentioned the possibility of a “mulligan.” In this case, I don’t think a mulligan is warranted as you have an undefeated Bartlett who just beat Lemley last week. Also, a major decision is much different than a loss in tiebreakers, for instance. Whether or not a mulligan is used also depends on the weight class around the wrestler who potentially drops. We saw this last week at 141 lbs, when Jack/McNeil were both upset, but sat in front of some quality wrestlers who they’ve beaten head-to-head.
Amazingly, this is the first new number one at the final eight weights. 125 lbs has been crazy … story at …

Keydets top Bellarmine, beat LIU in a thriller
LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI wrestling team came back strong this week by earning a dominant 25-11 SoCon victory over Bellarmine before topping LIU in a thriller, 19-18, Friday evening at Cormack Hall.
The Keydets (9-8, 2-3) have now won three of the last four duals and beginning to peak at the right time with the Southern Conference Championships just a month away.
VMI 19, LIU 18
With VMI trailing, 18-13, with one bout to go, the highlight of the night came when VMI heavyweight Tyler Mousaw pinned LIU’s Aeden Begue late in the first period (2:34) to lift VMI to an incredible 19-18 victory after earning six team points for the fall.
After he was taken down, Mousaw earned a reversal and Begue quickly flipped it with a reversal of his own. Not to be undermined, Mousaw registered yet another reversal and quickly put Begue on his back and got both shoulders to touch the pad for the incredible come-from-behind win, his second pin of the day. … story at … VMIkeydets.com/Keydets-top-bellarmine-beat-liu-in-a-thriller

The Eagles won seven of the 10 matches and earned bonus points in five of them. College Women’s Wrestling News – Feb. 12
This Week in Women’s Collegiate Wrestling (2/7/2024)
Key Takeaways from the week
As teams begin winding down their duals before regionals begin, there are some exciting matchups and a good look at how starters will look against top-rated opponents at Nationals.
1. The University of the Cumberlands keeps it close with Life
In one of the more exciting ranked dual matchups left this season, the University of the Cumberlands walked away with a few match wins, but couldn’t keep up with the Running Eagles.
The Patriots started with a big win from #5 Elizabeth Dosado getting the pin over #10 Devyn Gomez. Life’s #4 Diana Gonzalez took care of business at 109 lbs, after giving up the first pushout point to #11 Gracie Elliot, she turned up the offense and got the 10-3 decision.
Next, in one of the closest ranked matchups of the night, the points were flying between #6 Presley Anderson for Cumberlands against #9 Ariana Martinez. Anderson scored an early four-point takedown, followed by two unanswered takedowns to go up 8-0 in the first. In the second, Martinez gets a similar set of moves herself to tie things up. With little time remaining, Anderson finds her move and secures the 10-8 win. Life takes the next two weights with big pins from #6 Anna Krejsa and #10 Riley Dalrymple. At 136 lbs, we saw #19 Angie Prado take on an unranked opponent and get the pin for the Running Eagles. The McBryde sisters then competed in their usual order, but all up a weight class for this dual. While #5 Zaynah McBryde was wrestling tough … story at … Intermatwrestle.com/This-week-in-womens-collegiate-wrestling-272024

The Big 10 Big Match Results
Five B1G Takeaways from the Big Ten (2/7/24)
Last week was the most action-packed slate of duals we’ve had so far this season. A top-ranked wrestler fell hard and it wasn’t at 125-pounds, Penn State flexed on Ohio State, but the dual left us wondering “what the hell is a takedown?” and the Wolverines pounced on the visiting Hawkeyes.
Ladies and Gentlemen…Sergio Lemley
What else can be said right now that hasn’t already been said about this youngster. Lemley, who is rightfully the Big Ten wrestler of the week, was absolutely dominant in his 14-2 win over former No. 1 ranked Real Woods. He didn’t just dominate the returning NCAA finalist, he nearly pinned him. The win didn’t just spark a massive response in the wrestling world, it launched Lemley into the No. 10 spot in the rankings. At least one person saw what Lemley was capable of and that was our very own Kevin Claunch who has been very vocal on behalf of the true freshman. Check out this week’s Conference Crossover Conversation where we discuss the Lemley upset, Michigan’s win over Iowa and what we hope to see coming this weekend. … story at … Intermatwrestle.com/Big-10/five-b1g-takeaways-from-the-big-ten
