Southwestern College Adds Women’s Wrestling

Editor’s Notes; Another new program that will be started in Kansas next season. Hopefully they will then add a men’s team.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
WINFIELD, Kan. — The Southwestern College Board of Trustees has approved the addition of a women’s wrestling program, with the inaugural season slated for 2018-2019. The college has launched a search for a coach to build the team. “After much deliberation and research, and in full conversation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) we are enthusiastic to add women’s wrestling at SC,” said Brad Andrews, Southwestern College President. “We are excited for the class of students that the sport will bring to campus and proud to be one of the first schools in Kansas to award scholarships to these student-athletes.” High school and club wrestling for girls has grown rapidly in the past decade. Initially in Texas, New Mexico and California, now the sport is experiencing considerable growth throughout the country. Institutions of higher education are beginning to respond to the emerging sport by offering programs for student athletes to continue at a collegiate level.Rest of the story at http://www.buildersports.com/article/2927.php?mc_cid=443c32ec88&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

GRAPPLING WITH EQUALITY: IS WOMEN’S WRESTLING HEADED TO THE NCAA?

Editor’s Notes; While it is great to see the growth of wrestling with women’s programs on all levels we wonder if the athletic directors and college presidents who dislike wrestling (Boise State is one example) will use this in a negative manner. They could reason that well since we can not have wrestling for both we must drop the men’s team. I hope not but it is something to keep in mind.

In late August, wrestling fans from all corners of the globe descended on Paris to witness greatness at the 2017 world championships. They weren’t disappointed. In a sport of constant grappling, one American proved untouchable in the arena on Boulevard de Bercy. Helen Maroulis captured her third consecutive international title to go along with a world championship in 2015 and Olympic gold at Rio in 2016. In Paris the 25-year-old native of Rockville, Maryland, breezed through five competitors by a combined score of 53-0.
So, why doesn’t the NCAA let her wrestle?
