NO. 12 CAROLINA UPSETS NO. 3 VIRGINIA TECH, 23-10
BLACKSBURG, Va. — Led by No. 17 Kennedy Monday’s technical fall win over No. 3 David McFadden, No. 12 North Carolina defeated No. 3 Virginia Tech, 23-10 Friday night at Cassell Coliseum. 
Joey Melendez began the dual with a key upset win over No. 11 Joey Prata. In the first period, Melendez turned Prata and scored four back points, a move that would prove to be the difference-maker. He scored another takedown in the third period on a scramble and won, 8-7, to kick off the night for Carolina. After Virginia Tech won at 133 pounds, Carolina picked up momentum again with wins in back-to-back bouts. Zach Sherman and Austin O’Connor both won with decisions – Sherman’s over another ranked opponent (No. 18 Mitch Moore) – to push the team score in UNC’s favor, 9-3, after the first four matches.
A.C. Headlee kept the winning rolling for Carolina at 157 pounds with a win over No. 18 B.C. LaPrade. The redshirt senior scored a takedown in the second, the match’s only takedown. He held on through the third period and won, 3-2. The most notable bout in the match was No. 17 Kennedy Monday’s 21-6 technical fall win over No. 3 David McFadden. Monday scored early and often in the first, racking up 10 first-period points with a handful of back points. GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina junior Kennedy Monday has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after his technical fall win over the nation’s third-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds led the 12th-ranked Tar Heels to a 23-10 upset at No. 3 Virginia Tech in last Friday night’s ACC opener. NO. 8 CAROLINA SET FOR WEEKEND DUALS AGAINST DUKE AND BUCKNELL
Posted On: January 29, 2020No. 8 North Carolina (9-1, 1-0 ACC) returns to Carmichael Arena this weekend with a pair of duals in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels host Duke (Friday at 7:00 p.m.) and Bucknell (Saturday at 2:00 p.m.) as a part of the team’s alumni weekend. Friday’s dual will be broadcast nationally on the ACC Network. UNC shot up the NWCA Coaches Poll this week following the team’s 23-10 win over No. 3 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg last Friday. NO. 8 NORTH CAROLINA BEATS DUKE, BUCKNELL IN CARMICHAEL THIS WEEKEND
Posted On: February 1, 2020CHAPEL HILL — No. 8 North Carolina won a pair of duals in Carmichael Arena this weekend as a part of the team’s 2020 Alumni Weekend. The Tar Heels (11-1, 2-0 ACC) knocked off Duke, 44-3, on Friday night, followed by a 25-9 win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.
Against the Blue Devils, the Tar Heels stormed out of the gate and never looked back. Duke forfeited the 125-pound match – and after three straight pins from Jaime Hernandez, No. 10 Zach Sherman and No. 4 Austin O’Connor, the Tar Heels were out to a 24-0 lead after the first four weights of the night.
No. 11 Kennedy Monday notched a tech fall win against the Blue Devils, while Joey Mazzara and Brandon Whitman both won via major decision to secure the home Friday night win for Carolina. With those victories, seven of Carolina’s eight wins in contested bouts were won with bonus points.
Against the Bison on Saturday, Joey Melendez got the Tar Heels started with another home dual meet win, this time a 5-3 decision over Geo Barzona. After Hernandez and Sherman won their bouts, O’Connor put Carolina in charge of the dual meet with a 18-3 tech fall win over Matthew Kolonia.
