Granville wrestlers missing deployed coach
RANVILLE — There’s a different feel to Granville wrestling practices these days. The wrestlers still go through their conditioning workouts and drills, they still engage in one-on-one full-speed bouts — but there’s a missing voice and presence in the room. Longtime wrestling coach and physical education teacher Steve Palmer is deploying to Kuwait with his New York National Guard unit, leaving his family, school and the team he has coached through the first half of the season. “I’m thankful that he’s doing it for us, but I would like him to be here for my senior year,” said senior 160-pounder Ben Chilkott, who is out with an elbow injury suffered last week. “But he’s gotta do what he’s gotta do.” “I personally am proud of him for it,” said senior Cole Haines, who wrestles at 170 for the Golden Horde. “He’s serving his country, he’s protecting all of us here.” Palmer, a Sergeant Major and a medic in the Army National Guard, was given a sendoff ceremony by the school before Christmas break. High school wrestling rankings: Notre Dame-GP’s Brandan Chletsos earning his place in national spotlight
It is going to take a crane to remove Notre Dame-GP’s three returning state champions from the top spots at their respective weights in the weekly Morning Call rankings. That sentence is going to need amending: There are four Crusaders who are not budging at this point in the season. Sophomore Brandan Chletsos solidified his position as the area’s clear-cut top 120-pounder with his performance at the 15th annual Escape the Rock tournament. He left Council Rock South High School with a championship belt and a boatload of confidence. “Once I won Trojan Wars [in late December in Chambersburg],” Chletsos said, “I knew I was on a roll. Training with my partners and coaches in the room, their motivation constantly pushed me to improve and really helped me a lot. “Winning this tournament really showed me what I was capable of. I’m hoping for a big season this year.” … Rest of the story at https://www.mcall.com/sports/varsity/wrestling/mc-spt-week3-high-school-wrestling-rankings-20200121-3f3tg7x46rhuvgc76et5lzwghy-story.html?mc_cid=d9bb51b324&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
