NCAA Division II News (2021) – # 4

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Division II teams have been completingtheir last dual meets and conference tournaments to determine national qualifiers. These tournaments will be held this weekend and the Nationals two weeks later in St. Louis. Several Wrestler of the Week articles are also included. 1 } – NWCA Division II Regular Season Poll #3
Manheim, PA – There is a new #1 in the NCAA Division II wrestling world heading into Super Regionals, with Nebraska-Kearney jumping from #3 to the #1 spot in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division II Rankings, released Friday morning by the Association.
INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
The Lopers moved to the top spot with 92 total points behind nine ranked wrestlers, with the only weight class not featuring a Nebraska-Kearney wrestler being heavyweight. Matt Malcom leads the ranked Lopers, sitting atop the 165 weight class. 2 } – Eagles’ wrestling season both longest, shortest on record
CHADRON, Neb. — February 16, 2021 — This has been both the longest and the shortest season for the Chadron State College wrestling team since the Eagles began competing in the sport in the late 1950s.  Coach Brett Hunter said the Eagles have had more practices, nearly 100, including the first one on October 10, compared to about 76 most seasons. But the team has competed only seven times, all in duals, compared to 18 of them in 2019-20.  And, the Eagles have not entered any open tournaments because nationwide they were a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected every sport and every other segment of society the past year. “It’s been a really challenging year,” Hunter said. “Much different than usual, but we’ve kept on track and are happy we’ve been able to compete as much as we have. AND Eagles wrestling defeats Western Colorado 27-13
CHADRON, Neb. — February 5, 2021 — The Chadron State College wrestling team defeated Western Colorado 27-13 in the final home dual for the Eagles, Friday evening in the Chicoine Center. “We did a good job finding a way to get the job done tonight,” said CSC Head Men’s Wrestling Coach Brett Hunter, “and it’s exciting to see our youth develop and continue to grow every time we compete.”  The Eagles, who are now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competition, went ahead 5-0 on a technical fall win by Tate Stoddard at 125 pounds. 3 } – Shane Gantz Named NSIC Wrestler of the Week
KENOSHA, Wis. – Redshirt-junior Shane Gantz of the Parkside Wrestling team has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Wrestler of the Week after his stellar performance last week.  
REWATCH THE DUAL AGAINST ST. CLOUD STATE
Gantz, the Waukesha, Wis., native, beat No. 1 ranked Devin Fitzpatrick of St. Cloud State 3-1 in Thursday night’s dual in De Simone Gymnasium. He improved to 5-0 and avenged a 10-4 defeat to Fitzpatrick in last season’s NCAA Super Region V Championship match. 4 } – Peter Kuster named GLVC Wrestler of the Week
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Drury University’s Peter Kuster was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Wrestler of Week in a vote of league coaches. Kuster finished the regular season undefeated at 141 pounds as he won his match in Drury’s lone competition last week. The junior from Jefferson City, Missouri, Joey Semerad 10-5, in the Panthers dual at McKendree. Kuster improved to 5-0 on the season, and he is currently ranked fifth at the NCAA-II in his weight class.
The honor marks the first time in Kuster’s career he has won the GLVC Wrestler of the Week award.

5 } – FitzPatrick, Brinkman earn NSIC Athlete of the Week honors
BURNSVILLE, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University athletics department saw two student-athletes earn Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) weekly awards this past week. On Monday, senior wrestler Devin FitzPatrick (Mahtomedi, Minn. / Mahtomedi) was named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week, while Madison Brinkman (Grey Eagle, Minn. / Melrose) was named the NSIC Diver of the Week Tuesday afternoon.  FitzPatrick earned his first NSIC Wrestler of the Week award this season after leading the Huskies to a resounding 31-3 dual match victory over the University of Mary last Thursday night. The redshirt senior, who currently ranks No. 2 in the nation at 165-pounds, posted a 6-3 victory over No. 4 ranked Braydon Huber in the second match of the evening. ST. CLOUD, MINN. – Domination: the exercise of control or influence over someone or something; the state of being so controlled. Aka: the St. Cloud State University wrestling team.  The Huskies exercised control in almost every way possible Thursday evening, as they dominated the No. 19 Upper Iowa University Peacocks in their 33-6 win. The victory secured yet another perfect regular season for No. 1 ranked St. Cloud State (5-0, 5-0 NSIC) and clinched the team’s tenth consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Regular Season Title, an accolade the Huskies shared with Northern State University this season. 6 } – James Burks Earns NSIC Wrestler of the Week Nod
Burnsville, Minn. – For the second time in his Northern State career, Wolves wrestling sophomore James Burks is the NSIC Wrestler of the Week. Burks is the first NSU student-athlete to be honored by the league this season.

7 } – Logan Kemp Named MEC Wrestler of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – After going 3-0 in Saturday’s West Liberty Open at the ASRC, Hilltopper veteran Logan Kemp was honored on Monday as the Mountain East Conference Wrestler of the Week. Kemp, a two-time NCAA Division II national qualifier from Centerville, Ohio, is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation at 197 pounds and put that nationally-ranked form on full display in the open format event featuring wrestlers from West Liberty, Davis & Elkins and Fairmont State. The WLU standout barely had time to work up a sweat on Saturday, wrapping up all three of his matches with bonus point wins long before the final whistle. 6 Hilltoppers win individual titles; 9 earn All-MEC laurels
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Call it Mission Accomplished!
    Coach Danny Irwin‘s No. 6-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team looked like a team on a mission on Saturday as the Hilltoppers dominated the second annual Mountain East Conference Championships from start to finish. Six West Liberty wrestlers won individual championships and nine of the 10 WLU starters earned All-Conference recognition as the Hilltoppers ran away to a convincing victory inside the ASRC. The Black and Gold racked up 152 team points to easily outdistance defending MEC champion UNC Pembroke (119.5) for the championship hardware. Notre Dame (Ohio) was third at 99.5 with Davis & Elkins (86) and Alderson Broaddus (82.5) rounding out the top five in the eight-team field. “I’m very proud of my guys,” Irwin said. “I thought we were really aggressive today bordering on being violent but staying within the rules. That’s what it takes to be successful when you’re up against quality competition like we were today and I thought we rose to the challenge.”

8 } – Turner Named MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State sophomore wrestler Mason Turner has been named the MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday (Feb. 16) by the league office. Turner, ranked No. 2 in the country at 125 pounds, pinned the top-ranked wrestler in his only action last week. The Kansas City, Kan. native won the marquee matchup of last week’s dual at Nebraska-Kearney (Feb. 11) with a pin 49 seconds into the third period. The returning All-American is now 9-1 on the season, including five wins via pin and three tech fall victories. 9} – No. 16 Upper Iowa Peacocks Sink Vikings in Sioux Falls
The No. 16 Peacock wrestling team escaped Sioux Falls, S.D. with a victory to improve to 3-2 on the season thanks to five wins that included a fall at 165 pounds. Upper Iowa’s 18-16 decision on Thursday night was highlighted by Scott Kellenberger’s win by fall. After the teams split the 10 bouts of the official dual, the Peacocks got the upper hand on the night with three wins in the five extra matches.

10 } – UNK’s Dominance Continues After Shut Out in Wichita
Kearney, Neb. – The second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team used four majors,, two forfeits and a tech fall to blank 24th-ranked Newman, 42-0, Thursday night in Wichita. The Lopers improve to 9-3 while the Jets fall 2-7. UNK’s annual showdown with Central Oklahoma on Saturday has been canceled due to COVID protocols. UNK, after tonight’s results, has outscored its competition 255-24 over the last six duals. Second-ranked Matt Malcom (Glenwood, Ia.) had the key win tonight as he shut out third-ranked Kameron Frame, 5-0. Malcom, now 9-0 on the year, used a takedown and two near fall points in the second period to record the win. Kearney, Neb. – The second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team used four bonus points wins and an overtime decision to tame No. 17-ranked Fort Hays State, 35-12, Thursday night at the Health & Sports Center. The Lopers finish up the regular season 10-3 and outscored the competition 290-36 over the last eight duals. The Tigers, meanwhile, drop to 3-7. “Even in the matches won, and in the ones we lost, there was just a couple of choices that could have been the difference between getting bonus points or winning the match. The guys just need to trust where they are at,” UNK head coach Dalton Jensen said. “It was good to dominate a rival opponent and this gives us confidence heading into regionals.”

11 } – No. 24 Central Missouri Jets conquer the Mules at Home
WARRENSBURG, Mo. (Feb. 6, 2021) – Central Missouri hosted Newman in the Mules first home dual of the season. John Ridle was the only victorious Mule at the MIAA showdown as the No. 24 Jets downed the Mules 44-4.  John Ridle earned his ninth straight win of the season with a 13-0 major decision over Kendall Frame at 157 pounds. The sophomore is now 9-0 on the season with a 4-0 record in the MIAA.  Zachery Hazen and Trevor Hankins held the Jets to just three-point victories at 197 and 285 pounds. Hazen battled Ivan Balavage through all three periods before losing a 8-5 decision at 197 pounds. 12 } – #13 University of Findlay Roughnecks Go 2-0
The 13th-ranked University of Findlay wrestling team scored a pair of victories at home on Feb. 6 after defeating 8th-ranked Ashland University 30-18 and 17th-ranked Tiffin University 30-15. Senior James Wimer picked up a pair of pins as he defeated Ashland’s Nick Carbone in 2:21 and Tiffin’s Hunter Langeloh in 4:13. Sophomore Branson Proudlock also picked up a pair of victories as he pinned Ashland’s Jesse Bowers in 4:10 and had a 4-3 win over Tiffin’s Matthew Zuckerman.

Extended 2021 Big Ten Wrestling Championship on Big Ten Network

Fans will not be permitted at Big Ten Championships at Penn State due to current state guidance
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Under current state guidance, spectators will not be permitted to attend the 2021 Big Ten Wrestling Championships at Penn State set for Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7.
The Big Ten Network recently announced an increase of its linear coverage of the event, giving fans around the country the chance to see the nation’s best wrestlers throughout the weekend.  The network will air whip-around coverage of all four mats during session one on Saturday and air Saturday night’s Big Ten semifinals. All four individual mats for both Saturday sessions will have mat cams available on the Big Ten Network+.
Sunday afternoon’s Big Ten Championship finals will also air live on the Big Ten Network. Big Ten Network+ will feature the consolation action occurring before the finals, as well as placing bouts during the title tilts.

Brackets Announced for Sunday’s ACC Wrestling Championship

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Wolfpack had four wrestlers finish with a perfect record in ACC duals, and enter Sunday’s 2021 ACC Championship with four No. 1 seeds as the ACC announced the brackets.
R-Sr. Tariq Wilson (141 pounds), R-Sr. Hayden Hidlay (157), R-Sr. Daniel Bullard (174) and Jr. Deonte Wilson (285) all went undefeated in conference action this season and all earned top seeds. Wilson was one of only two ACC wrestlers to go a perfect 5-0, the other three from NC State were 4-0.
NC State led the ACC for four No. 1 seeds, followed by Pitt with three, Virginia Tech with a pair and North Carolina with one.
The Pack only had a pair of No. 1 seeds each of the last four years, and the four this year are the most since the 2016 team title.
Defending ACC champion R-So. Jakob Camacho (125) and classmate Trent Hidlay (184) both earned the #2 seeds at their weights.
In the six-team ACC, the #1 and #2 seeds receive a bye into the semifinals.
 The remaining Pack seeds: R-So. Jarrett Trombley is #5 at 133 pounds, Fr. Ed Scott is #3 at 149, R-Sr. Thomas Bullard #5 at 165 and R-Sr. Nick Reenan #4 at 197.
The 2021 ACC Championship will take place Sunday inside Reynolds Coliseum. NC State has won the ACC title the last two years, and will be looking to capture its third straight for the first time since the late 1980s.

1 } – NO. 1 GRAND VIEW’S WRESTLING GARNERS THEIR SIXTH CONSECUTIVE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
Oskaloosa, IA – No. 1 Grand View men’s wrestling captures their sixth consecutive Heart of America Conference Championship after totaling a team score of 216.5. Along with winning the team title, Nick Mitchell was named Head Coach of the Year, and Ben Lee (SO/Cambridge, IA) was awarded outstanding wrestler.  During the opening round, six of the twelve Viking wrestlers earned byes. Vikings that did compete included Kendon Lee (SR/Addis, LA) at 141, Trevor Anderson (SO/Glenwood, IA) at 149, Gio Bonilla at 157, Dalton Jensen (SO/Downs, IL) at 165, Ben Lee at 184, and Greg Hagan (FR/Des Moines, IA) at 285. All Grand View wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Grand View had a clean sweep sending all 12 student-athletes to the semi-finals. Grand View recorded six pins, three major decisions, two decisions, and one tech fall.  Much like the quarterfinals, Grand View sent all twelve into the semis. 2 } – MWR: #18 BRAVES SECURE THE KCAC/SOONER NATIONAL QUALIFIER TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

MCPHERSON, Kan. – The Ottawa University men’s wrestling secured the KCAC/Sooner National Qualifier Team Championship on Saturday. The Braves finished first overall out of nine teams and six braves qualified for Nationals. Bobby Robinson Jr.Ryan DelforgeJD PerezCameron Young-LeggettCarson Savage and Benito Hernandez qualified for NAIA Nationals.
133lb weight division
Bobby Robinson Jr. finished first overall in the 133lb weight division. Robinson Jr. won in his first match over Kolby Encinas (Oklahoma Wesleyan) by a 12-4 major decision. In the semifinal match, Robinson Jr. defeated Alex Pena (Wayland Baptist) by a 3-2 decision. Robinson Jr. secured first place by upending Kaden Goff (Bethany College) by a fall.
141lb weight division
Parker Wright placed third in the 141lb weight class. Wright won the first match on a 10-1 major decision over Bryan Pena (Wayland Baptist). In the semifinal match, Wright was defeated by La’Stot Pleasant (Wayland Baptist) in a 13-4 decision. Wright responded by winning in the consolation semifinals on a 9-1 major decision over Levi Youngwolfe (Oklahoma Wesleyan). Wright earned third place on a 2-0 decision over Moses Torres (Wayland Baptist).
149lb weight division

4 } – Doane College Wrestling Claims First GPAC Crown
Results
Doane travelled to Morningside on Friday evening to take on the Mustangs in a winner-take-all match for the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) regular season title. When the dust settled, a tiebreaker was needed to determine the winner and the Tigers came out on top, 22-21, to win the program’s first-ever conference duals crown. The night opened with NAIA No. 9 Daniel Vargas posting a 7-3 victory over Evan Shell at 125. Morningside came back with a tech fall victory at 133 from No. 14 Taylor Vasquez. Doane regained the lead as No. 1 Baagii Boldmaa earned a second period pin over Noah Styskal to go in front, 9-5.  An overtime sudden victory, 4-2, decision at 149 went to No. 8 John Diener over No. 11 Tristan Zamilpa. 5 } – Wayland Baptist Wrestlers win 3 duals in Oklahoma
BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – The Wayland Baptist men’s wrestling team won three of its five matches Thursday at the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Duals. The Pioneers defeated Central Christian (Kan.), 37-15, Central Baptist (Ark.) and Lyon (Ark.), 45-9, while coming up short against 17th-ranked Ottawa, Kan., 38-6, and host Oklahoma Wesleyan, 33-15. Wrestling at 285 pounds, William Bennett went 3-0 for the Pioneers, recording pins in all three of his matches. The results improved Wayland’s duals record this season to 3-4. CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — No. 14 Campbellsville University men’s wrestling extended its perfect record to start the 2021 season after winning a pair of duals on Tuesday night. The Tigers (5-0, 2-0 MSC) beat Midway University, 42-18, and then turned around and beat the host Saints of Thomas More, 25-16. Gavin Smith, wrestling at 165, shined with a pair of first period pins over his opponents. 6 } – Cumberlands Patriots CLOSE DUAL SEASON WITH VICTORY
Williamsburg, KY – Men’s wrestling closed out the dual season with a win, downing Thomas More 32-18 on Senior Day. The lone man to graduate, Jarod Swank, had his biggest win of the season at 174 pounds. Swank, ninth ranked in the NAIA at his weight, shutout his opponent for a tech fall in 2:32. In a high-scoring first period, he tilted David Gilbert of Thomas More four times for nearfalls. Swank nearly noted the first fall of his final season, but slipped out of it to record his first tech instead.  The Patriots noted their 14th consecutive home win with the victory, dating back to December 2016. This season they picked up wins at the O. Wayne Rollins Center against Cumberland and now Thomas More.
 Gage Hudson started the Patriots showing on a high note, walking off with his first win since Midway. He gave up the first points in the dual to Shay Horton, and took a deficit into the second. He turned around the match with a takedown in the next period and rode it out to take back the ride time advantage. 7 } – Indiana Tech Men’s Wrestling Wins Inaugural WHAC Wrestling Championship
SYLVANIA, Ohio – Men’s wrestling won the first inaugural Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship with 163.5 points while six individuals won their weight classes to become individual WHAC Champs and head coach Thomas Pompei earned WHAC Coach of the Year. Nathan Orum started the day with a bye at 125 before moving on to wrestle Connor Crinigan of Rochester. Orum scrambled for the early takedown to lead 2-0 before Crinigan escaped to make the score 2-1. Another takedown for Orum put him up 4-1 before he executed a cross face on top to gain four back points to lead 8-1. Four more back points for Orum gave him the 12-1 lead to end the first period. Orum started the second period on top where he secured four more back points to end the match and gained another point for riding time to earn him the 17-1 tech fall in 3:41. This advanced Orum to the finals where he faced Ty Haskins of Marian. 8 } – CATON NAMED AMC WRESTLER OF THE YEAR, ALLEN COACH OF THE YEAR
Conway, Ark. – The American Midwest Conference (AMC) has announced the members of the 2021 AMC Wrestling All-Conference team and the season awards. Maleek Caton (SR/Sheridan, AR) was named the AMC Wrestler of the Year, becoming the fourth Eagle to take home the honor. Todd Allen was named the AMC Coach of the Year, his second time receiving the award. Niko Perovic was named the AMC Newcomer of the Year.  The Eagles also took home seven spots on the All-Conference Team: Robert Fairchild (JR/Metarie, La.) (125), Josh Wright (JR/St. Louis, Mo.) BLUEFIELD, Va. – Reinhardt pinned down yet another wrestling championship, locking up the 2021 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship Meet crown on Friday. The tournament was hosted by Bluefield. Reinhardt won the championship with 188 points, edging Truett McConnell who finished second with 151 points. Montreat was third with 95 points, Bluefield fourth with 91.5 points, St. Andrews fifth with 68.5 points, and WVU Tech sixth with 37.5 points. Trent Leon of Reinhardt is the Wrestler of the Year. MOUNT VERNON, Ga. —- The No. 2 nationally ranked Life University men’s wrestling team captured the Mid-South Conference South Division title for the second consecutive year after defeating No. 6 Cumberland and (RV) Brewton-Parker Friday afternoon. The Running Eagles improve to 9-0 and 5-0 in MSC action on the year. The men defeated Cumberland 39-8 before downing Brewton-Parker 49-0. Life U totaled seven pins on the day in the two matches. 12 } – W.H.A.C. WRESTLING HONORS ANNOUNCED
SYLVANIA, Ohio – (Complete Honors) – The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced its first-ever conference honors for the sport of men’s wrestling. Blake Mulkey of Marian headlined the 2021 list, receiving Wrestler of the Year and First-Team All-Conference honors. Marian’s Elliott Rodgers picked up Newcomer of the Year after winning the 165-lb weigth class. Indiana Tech head coach Thomas Pompei was voted as Coach of the Year after leading the Warriors to the league’s first-ever tournament championship. Lourdes head coach Kelly Dock, III was voted as the Champions of Character Coach.
