Camels win SoCon opener, split Saturday duals

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell topped visiting Gardner-Webb in its 2022-23 Southern Conference opener 25-12, while falling 37-6 to No. 17 Nebraska at the Pope Center / Gore Arena.

The Cornhuskers also topped the Runnin’ Bulldogs 37-6.

Nebraska moved to 4-2 on the season with a pair of dual victories, while Campbell, taking on its fourth nationally ranked opponent of the season, moved to 6-5 overall, winning its sixth straight SoCon opener. GWU, meanwhile, fell to 1-6 on the season.

Campbell claimed its sixth straight meeting with GWU, with three Camels picking up bonus point victories. At 197 pounds, Levi Hopkins racked up a 14-point third period for a 24-9 tech fall (6:34) win over Samuel Mora, and No. 12 heavyweight Taye Ghadiali followed with a 22-8 major decision over Abraham Preston, giving CU a 15-3 lead over the Runnin’ Bulldogs. No. 29 Domenic Zaccone added another major decision for the Camels, defeating Todd Carter 10-2 at 133 pounds.

At 174 pounds, Cole Rees earned his first career SoCon win, while Chris Rivera earned his first dual victory of the season at 149 pounds. No. 29 RJ Mosley at 165 and Drew West at 125 both earned decisions for GWU.

In the first ever dual meeting between the Camels and Nebraska, the 17th-ranked Cornhuskers posted six bonus point wins, including pins for No. 25 Bubba Wilson (2:28) over Dom Baker at 165 pounds, and No. 5 Brock Hardy (6:52) over Shannon Hanna at 141. … rest of story at GOcamels.com/news/2023/1/7/wrestling-camels-win-socon-opener-split-saturday-duals

No. 6 NC State takes care of business, drops Binghamton, 36-3

RALEIGH So much for any rust coming off the winter break.
For the first time since December 20,the NC State wrestling team was in action and the Pack was in midseason form, dominating Binghamton, 36-3 in front of 1,750 fans inside of Reynolds Coliseum.
With the win, NC State improves to 9-0 on the season as they gear up for ACC competition. The Pack will have one more pre-conference warm up, hosting Army next Friday, before jumping into league action.
If the Bearcats were the next to last quiz, NC State looks more than ready for the conference test.
The Pack dropped the first match of the night when Micah Roes defeated No. 24 Jarrett Trombley, 3-1. NC State won the final nine matches of the night, including three major decisions and two pin falls.
The Pack is now 4-0 all-time versus Binghamton, the school where Pat Popolizio coached from 2007-12.
NC State went 2-0 in head-to-head matchups of ranked opponents on Friday. In the 184-pound class, No. 3 Trent Hidlay shook off his first loss of the season (in New Orleans) and defeated No. 23 Jacob Nolan, 13-3. The Lewistown, Pa. native was never in serious jeopardy, jumping out to a 6-2 lead after one. Hidlay (13-1) piled it on from then on, scoring on takedown after takedown in the final two periods.

No. 18 UNC-Pembroke Wrestling Rumbles Past Belmont Abbey

BELMONT – Belmont Abbey breezed to a pair of victories to open the dual and forge an early 9-0 lead, but the 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team proved victorious in each of the last eight matches of the evening, including six wins with bonus points, to cruise past Belmont Abbey, 34-9, on Friday evening inside the Wheeler Center.
 
It was the third-straight triumph for the Braves (8-1, 4-0 SACC) who stayed unbeaten in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action as well. Belmont Abbey (4-8, 0-3) has now dropped four of its last five outings, and fell to 3-18 all-time in the series with the Black & Gold.
 
A win via technical fall to open the night, as well as a 10-0 major decision from Ben Fielding at 133 pounds, gave the Crusaders a quick 9-0 advantage, but the Braves got on the board with a 10-1 major decision by Cody Williams at 141 pounds and then hit cruise control. The Black & Gold stormed ahead, 11-9, on the shoulders of Rahsaan Vereen’s 7-3 decision in the 157-pound matchup, and the rout was on after that.
 
Loye Burkhead opened the second half of the dual with a second-period pin of Paul Jakub at 165 pounds, and Massimo Sullivan capped the night with a late third-period pin of John Carroll in the heavyweight bout.

Cornell Wrestling Posts Second Top 10 Win In 48 Hours, Drops #8 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Cornell wrestling team earned its second win over a top 10 opponent away from home in a 48-hour span, topping No. 8 Virginia Tech 22-12 on Friday evening at the Moss Arts Center. The Big Red improved to 4-2 on the season after the comfortable team win.

Two days removed from its win over No. 3 Arizona State in Austin, Texas, Cornell took the lead three matches into the dual on Chris Foca’s win by fall at 174 pounds and never looked back. The Big Red won 5-of-6 matches between ranked wrestlers, though third-ranked Vito Arujau suffered his first loss of the season in a narrow 3-2 loss to 10th-ranked Sam Latona at 133 pounds.

Foca’s second period fall came on the heels of Julian Ramirez’s shutout of No. 22 Connor Brady in a 3-0 victory at 165 to even the dual at 3-3. After Tech got back within 9-6, Jacob Cardenas topped No. 21 Andy Smith, nearly majoring him in a 10-3 triumph. Brett Ungar at 125 and Vince Cornella at 141 upset higher ranked opponents with Ungar winning in overtime over No. 15 Eddie Ventresca and Cornella majoring No. 15 Tom Cook, 12-4.

Three-time NCAA champion Yianni Diakomihalis closed the dual with a solid 6-2 win over No. 11 Caleb Henson for his 99th career victory.
