Camels win SoCon opener, split Saturday duals

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell topped visiting Gardner-Webb in its 2022-23 Southern Conference opener 25-12, while falling 37-6 to No. 17 Nebraska at the Pope Center / Gore Arena.

The Cornhuskers also topped the Runnin’ Bulldogs 37-6.

Nebraska moved to 4-2 on the season with a pair of dual victories, while Campbell, taking on its fourth nationally ranked opponent of the season, moved to 6-5 overall, winning its sixth straight SoCon opener. GWU, meanwhile, fell to 1-6 on the season.

Campbell claimed its sixth straight meeting with GWU, with three Camels picking up bonus point victories. At 197 pounds, Levi Hopkins racked up a 14-point third period for a 24-9 tech fall (6:34) win over Samuel Mora, and No. 12 heavyweight Taye Ghadiali followed with a 22-8 major decision over Abraham Preston, giving CU a 15-3 lead over the Runnin’ Bulldogs. No. 29 Domenic Zaccone added another major decision for the Camels, defeating Todd Carter 10-2 at 133 pounds.

At 174 pounds, Cole Rees earned his first career SoCon win, while Chris Rivera earned his first dual victory of the season at 149 pounds. No. 29 RJ Mosley at 165 and Drew West at 125 both earned decisions for GWU.

In the first ever dual meeting between the Camels and Nebraska, the 17th-ranked Cornhuskers posted six bonus point wins, including pins for No. 25 Bubba Wilson (2:28) over Dom Baker at 165 pounds, and No. 5 Brock Hardy (6:52) over Shannon Hanna at 141. … rest of story at GOcamels.com/news/2023/1/7/wrestling-camels-win-socon-opener-split-saturday-duals
