Averett wrestling’s A Team, B Team co-champions in Cougar Duals
(DANVILLE, Va.) —  Averett University wrestling’s A Team and B Team shared the title in the Cougar Duals as co-champions on Saturday afternoon with both teams going undefeated.
Averett’s A Team only lost four times over the span of four dual matchups. Between Averett’s A and B Team, they had a point differential of 311-68 against their opponents combined. Each squad also had multiple undefeated wrestlers and had 22 pins combined. Averett’s A Team and B Team would have faced off in the finals, but they decided against it. I feel that even though we wrestled as two different teams today, we still are a part of the same Averett wrestling family,” head Coach Blake Roulo Said. “I don’t see any point in dividing our family with such an amazing accomplishment finishing as co-champions going 4-0 with both squads. When either team wins we both win. I don’t see the point in our family fighting in front of a public audience when we do it every day in the room.”
Averett’s A Team began their run against Patrick and Henry Community College. They managed to compile six falls to go on and defeat the Patriots 58-0. Sophomore Xavier Swanson got his pin in just over 20 seconds at 157 pounds. Sophomore Michael Gabbard got his in just under a minute in the 174-pound weight class. Senior Trent Ragland had his first match since 2021-22 season, also pinning his opponent in just under two minutes. Senior Mauricio Reyes got a pin in the 141-pound weight class and so did freshman Carter Shupert at 149 pounds.
Against Saint Andrews University, Averett’s A Team won 56-0. The Cougars earned five additional pins. Swanson, junior Anthony Taylor, Gabbard, sophomore Nolan Gerwitz and Ragland all earned a fall. The Cougars also went undefeated in the dual. … story at … Averettcougars.com/Mens-wrestling-averett-wrestlings-a-team-b-team-co-champions-in-cougar-duals

Lopers Score 23 Straight to Down the Eagles
Kearney, Neb. – The 10th-ranked Nebraska Kearney wrestling team won the final six weight classes to down 13th-ranked Chadron State, 26-10, Friday night in Chadron.
The Lopers improve to 3-2 while the Eagles fall to 2-1. At this early point of the season, both squads were without some of their expected starters.
UNK was down 10-3 when redshirt sophomore Nic Stoltenberg (Omaha Skutt) managed an escape in overtime to win 2-1 at 157 pounds. That started the win streak and turned the tide towards the Lopers. Redshirt sophomore Kaden Hart (St. Louis) followed with a 13-2 major with redshirt sophomore Dylan Vodicka (Garrison) erasing an early 5-0 deficit to win 14-8 at 184 pounds. Former Thompson wrestler Gabe Hixenbaugh returns home to help University of Montevallo build wrestling program
By ANDREW SIMONSON | Sports Editor Gabe Hixenbaugh has accomplished a lot during his wrestling career, with wins against some of the top wrestlers in the country and success on the biggest stages in Alabama and the entire nation. But he has never done one thing: wrestle collegiately in front of his hometown fans.
Now thanks to a fresh start with the University of Montevallo’s wrestling program, he has a chance to do just that and chase his dreams close to home while laying the groundwork for wrestlers from across the state to follow in his footsteps. Hixenbaugh was a five-time individual state champion for Thompson in high school, going 249-16 during his high school career to become the second-winningest wrestler in program history. He also helped the Warriors to three state championships as a team. He was an elite wrestler nationally during that time as well, winning a national championship at the Junior Nationals in Fargo, one of the most prestigious wrestling tournaments in the country, and was named a Fargo All-American. At the time he graduated, however, the only college wrestling program in the state was Division-III Huntingdon College, so Hixenbaugh went to Division-I Campbell University for four years. … story at … Shelbycountyreporter.com/Former-thompson-wrestler-gabe-hixenbaugh-returns-home-to-help-university-of-montevallo-build-wrestling-program

College Wrestling opportunities are on the rise

The sport of wrestling took a giant leap this past year with the number of male wrestlers increasing by about ten percent. Another eye-catching statistic is the increasing number of college wrestlers out there. In the recent past you would seldom find a local high school wrestler continuing the sport at the college level. That’s no longer true. The opportunity is there with more colleges offering the sport and the athletes are knocking on their doors.
Just a few local guys I can think of right off the bat are the members of WVU Tech’s wrestling squad. Jeff Bowles is a junior who holds down the 285-pound class. He is a former Liberty Raider and placed third in the state at 220 pounds in 2021. Max Underwood is from Oak Hill and has placed in one tournament for the Golden Bears this year at 197 pounds. Liam Lusher is a two-time state runner-up from Independence High and he has settled in at Tech, weighing 149 pounds. Then you have the M and M brothers, Zach and Thomas Mullins. They were both state qualifiers from Greenbrier East High school. Zach is a sophomore at 133 pounds and Thomas is a freshman at 197 pounds. Thomas was state runner-up in 2021. He recently placed in the Averett University Open wrestling in the 285-pound class.
So far, the most successful wrestler at Tech this season has been a Beckley boy, Jackson Evans. Jackson has placed in all three tournaments the Golden Bears have participated in — first at Cumberland, Ky., third at Averett University and fourth at the King Open in Bristol, Tennessee.
If you look to the north you’ll see three local guys currently wrestling at Glenville State University. Beckley’s Devin Gauldin, a junior, is starting at 197 pounds for the Pioneers. Gauldin was a two-time state placewinner at Woodrow Wilson and was state runner-up in 2020. Shady Spring’s Joshua Goode and Jay Jones of Woodrow Wilson are first-year wrestlers at the Gilmer County school. Goode was a multiple state place winner at Shady Spring and holds the record for most career wins (160) for the Tigers. Jones placed fourth (175) in the states his senior year at Beckley.
Nicholas County’s Dalton Hanshaw is a freshman at Fairmont State University. Dalton was state runner-up last year in the 190-pound class and he recorded 123 wins while wrestling for the Grizzlies.
Independence graduate Mason Kump was the Class AA-A WV state champ at 195 pounds in 2019. He wrestled some at Southeastern University but transferred to Belmont Abbey in North Carolina to finish his college career. Kump starts at 197 pounds for Belmont, which has been ranked as high as 18th among the NCAA Division II teams.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Tayla Grove, a former Shady Spring Tiger wrestler. Tayla wrestles at Bluefield State University and recently got her first collegiate win against Southwest Virginia Community College. Her coach, Sam Gardner, stated that Tayla loves that “cowboy,” which is a move sometimes called a hip toss. Grove was third in West Virginia twice wrestling for Shady Spring. … story at … Cleburnetimesreview.com/Wrestling-college-opportunities-are-on-the-rise

Cowboys Defeat Lehigh, 25-12, in First Dual Since Early November
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 20 Lehigh, 25-12, in its first dual in nearly a month Friday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU improved to 2-0 on the season, while Lehigh fell to 0-3. After splitting the first two bouts of the night, the Cowboys rattled off six straight wins to take control of the dual. On a night when Oklahoma State was without veterans Daton Fix and Luke Surber, young talent stepped up to carry OSU to victory. “We knew we were going to have to overcome some things coming into this one, and I think we did for the most part,” head coach John Smith said. “It wasn’t anything perfect, but it was good. I saw some guys trying to stretch their scores when they knew we needed major decisions. We were able to get that at 165 and 184. Nice win from Thompson getting his first win. Saw a little different demeanor, and he trusted the process tonight. I thought we learned a little bit about ourselves at the heavyweight. Nice job at 141 with the tech fall, and we expected that, but it was still a nice job to go out and get it done.”
Troy Spratley got the Cowboys started off on the right foot, riding a first period takedown to ultimately defeat Luke Stanich, 4-2. At 133 pounds, Reece Witcraft took on top-ranked Ryan Crookham, who was able to get the Mountain Hawks on the board with an 11-2 major decision. … story at … OKstate.com/Cowboy-wrestling-cowboys-defeat-lehigh-25-12-in-first-dual-since-early-november

No. 20 Lehigh Drops Final Dual of 2023 At No. 11 Oklahoma State
STILLWATER, Okla. – First-year Ryan Crookham won by major decision to move to 9-0 on the season and give No. 20 Lehigh an early lead but No. 11 Oklahoma State won six straight bouts from 141 through 184 to claim a 25-12 win over the Mountain Hawks Friday night at Historic Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Junior Michael Beard and sophomore Nathan Taylor closed the dual on a high note with back-to-back wins, with Taylor knocking off his second ranked opponent of the season, but the Mountain Hawks fell to 0-3 on the dual campaign.
“We let a few matches slip through our hands,” Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. “We had some single legs up in the air that would’ve been the difference in a match. We have to be cleaner there. There were some good things tonight. I thought that we could win this dual. I thought we could win six matches and we lost all the tight ones. … story at … Lehighsports.com/Wrestling-no-20-lehigh-drops-final-dual-of-2023-at-no-11-oklahoma-state

Big news for girls wrestling was announced today in Oklahoma as the Oklahoma Coaches Association has officially adopted girls wrestling as a part of the Oklahoma All-State games.
Very significant achievement for girls wrestling in Oklahoma as this event has only been done in an unofficial capacity in recent years for the girls.

Gov. Mifflin holds clinic for girls wrestling hosted by former Olympian Kerry McCoy
Upwards of 70 girls attended the event to practice together and learn techniques from McCoy
In a palpable sign of the sport’s rising popularity, the emergence of girls wrestling was on full display Monday night as Gov. Mifflin held a clinic hosted by Kerry McCoy, a two-time national champ at Penn State and former Olympian.
Upwards of 70 girls from across Berks County were on hand to learn techniques from McCoy, hear from local coaches and practice with other athletes. “When you come into a gym, and it’s full of wrestlers, it’s awesome,” McCoy said, “And then now you come in and you see female wrestlers, male wrestlers, it’s just great. Usually, if you went into a gym 20 years ago, and you saw a clinic, it didn’t matter, you might have four or five people in a clinic. “When you have a full room, it’s awesome. And then we throw in there the growth of women’s wrestling and I have a full room of women wrestlers, that’s really exciting.” … story at … Readingeagle.com/Gov-mifflin-holds-clinic-for-girls-wrestling-hosted-by-former-olympian-kerry-mccoy

Women Wrestling Continues To Pin Naysayers
Women wrestling is the fastest growing female sport in the U.S. according to the National Federation of State High School Association.
The trend is apparent locally as more schools, colleges and universities continue to add women’s wrestling programs. “I can’t believe how many girls are at this tournament,” said Joel Sopak, the head wrestling coach for Washington Middle School and a sixth grade teacher, after a recent middle school wrestling tournament. “This is a good thing; it means our sport is healthy and thriving.”
The tournament Sopak was speaking about was held at Jefferson Middle School this past Saturday, and hosted 14 teams with more than 110 wrestlers competing, and a rather large chunk – as compared to years before – composed of female grapplers. “I’m not sure how many girls are in this pool of wrestlers,” said Eric Sohl, Jefferson Middle School’s wrestling coach and teacher. “Each year we see more and more girls hitting the mats. The girls not only compete against other girls, but the males as well. But this is the most girls I’ve seen in one tournament.”
The National Federation of State High School Associations reported that the Wrestling Rules Committee has established separate weight classes, effective with the 2023-24 season for girls wrestling. The sport’s past five years of growth in participants and championships is greater than any other women’s sports team. The NFHS is reporting that girls’ participation in wrestling climbed nationally from 4,975 participants in 2005 to 7,351 in 2010. The most recent NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey revealed participation almost tripled by 2018-19 with 21,124 girl … story at … Post-journal.com/news/An-exciting-time/WrestlingNews

Sooners Bounce Back with Win Over No. 21 West Virginia
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Oklahoma wrestling picked up its first road conference win of the season after defeating No. 21 West Virginia 21-19 on Sunday. The Sooners (4-1 overall, 2-1 Big 12) bounced back from Friday night’s loss at No. 3 Missouri by winning six matches against the Mountaineers, earning bonus points in two bouts. The Big 12 battle was highlighted by the match winning takedown in the closing seconds of the heavyweight bout for Josh Heindselman and the fifth tech fall victory of the season for Stephen Buchanan.
The 125-pounders started the match, which meant Conrad Hendriksen (5-2) was the first to take the mat for the Sooners. The starting lineup took down Drexel and Clarion in back-to-back duals on the East Coast, while the rest of the squad turned in a solid performance at the Cougar Clash
