Penn State Wrestling Takes Down No. 5 Iowa State 22-12 in Collegiate Duals Finale
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Penn State (7-0, 0-0 B1G) took down No. 5 Iowa State (7-2) 22-12 in the Blue Pool final at the 2022 Collegiate Duals. Penn State closed out the two-day event in New Orleans’ Morial Convention Center with a 3-0 record after the big win in the top-five match-up with the Cyclones.

DECEMBER 2022 | SCHOLASTIC COACHES DIRECTOR’S REPORT
GIRLS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
So, now that we are shy of forty states with sanctioned girls wrestling scholastic state championships, what do they look like? I can tell you that they have some comparable experiences for their female athletes, while some have very unique protocols or formats. Much of this can be attributed to where each state is with the number of years they’ve conducted the tournaments. Some states are just getting out of the gate, some are on the doorstep, while others are waiting to get the green light from their state’s governing body while conducting an unsanctioned state tournament through their state’s coach’s associations. A few states have yet to gain interest or traction, but that will change soon as the girls wrestling movement continues to expand and gain in popularity. It’s incredible how fast this initiative has grown and continues to grow. If your school still needs to get a girls wrestling team, please consider helping find information about how to get one established. It continues to strengthen our participation numbers and local interest and, without a doubt, provides all the qualities, benefits, and outcomes that make our sport great and unique while serving a whole new group of athletes.
With regard to a girls state tournament, some of the questions I’ve heard are the following; Are there enough girls participating in your state to require a qualifying tournament for the state tournament. To this point in time, the answer is yes, for most states. States in transition may still have an open tournament with no qualifying process. Other questions to be answered are; how many regions a state should have and how many qualifiers make it to the state tournament. This is an area that does differ as determined by each state. Another issue; does the tournament have a double-elimination format, and how many place winners should be recognized? Again, most states have a double-elimination format, but the number of place winners recognized may vary (it seems like 4, 6, or 8). Most states have a full bracket (typically 16), with some stating that the last two weight classes may be just shy of the number to fill a bracket. Some states have found creative solutions, such as an at-large selection process from the regional tournament to add a couple of girls to the state tournament to fill the brackets in their weight class. Again, this is not a pervasive problem in most states, but there are a few. I like the way some states have addressed this issue. … rest of story at NWCAonline.com/december-2022-scholastic-coaches-directors-report
Girls wrestling getting closer to more organized tournaments, state championship in Pennsylvania
(WTAJ) — Pennsylvania’s fastest-growing youth sport is getting closer to its next big step.
As of Tuesday, Dec. 27, the state has 90 girls wrestling teams and needs just 10 more to become sanctioned by the PIAA, which would lead to more tournaments and an organized state championship.
It’s something wrestler Savannah Carfley from Curwensville, thinks will help expand the sport even more.
“It’s parent-driven, it’s girl-driven, not wanting to wrestle the guys,” Savannah said. “So I feel like opening that up where they have girls from almost every school that want to wrestle, that just shows you that something needs to be made here.”DuBois boxer ranked among the best in the country
The 11th-grader said she’s wanted to wrestle her whole life but had to watch her older brother wrestle for 12 years.
“I always begged my dad to let me wrestle,” Savannah said. “But he didn’t want me wrestling the guys.”
But she finally got her shot this year when her school was one of over 50 to start an all-girls team this year — and she convinced her dad to let her practice with the boys.
She said she likes practicing against them as an extra challenge, but understands why many girls would want to wrestle against only other girls. She said she loves wrestling and hopes the sanctioning will help other girls feel the same.
“Girl’s wrestling, as a whole, has grown so much, that it really shows that there’s girls out there that want to prove what they’re made of,” Savannah said. “Like it’s not just a guy’s sport.” … rest of story at WTAJ/news/girls-wrestling-getting-closer-to-more-organized-tournaments-state-championship-in-penn

BOONE, N.C. — App State’s Will Miller has been named not just the SoCon Wrestler of the Week thanks to a 3-0 mark that included a big win at North Carolina, but the NCAA has also recognized Miller as its National Wrestler of the Week.
Miller’s unbeaten week included a 7-5 decision against eighth-ranked returning All-American Clay Lautt of North Carolina, a result that gave App State its final victory in a 19-16 road win at No. 21 UNC. A year away from NCHSAA recognition, girls wrestling makes jump forward in North Carolina
ASHEVILLE — Eva Keefauver remembers what it was like to be the only girl in sight at a wrestling tournament.
She found herself in that position plenty when she began the sport as a middle schooler, receiving looks askance from the boys, then often being overpowered by them in matches even when she had superior technique.
She also remembers her first years wrestling at East Henderson High School, as the number of girl wrestlers, girls teams and girls tournaments began ticking up, and the pressure on the state high school association to sanction the sport increased.
This season – a year before girls wrestling becomes an official NCHSAA sport – Keefauver, her fellow athletes, their coaches and anybody watching one of the many girls wrestling events across the state can see just how much the sport has grown from just a year or two ago, pointing toward a bright future for the soon-to-be newest sanctioned sport in the state.
“This is the first year that we’ve had finals together and full brackets in a lot of tournaments,” Keefauver said. “There’s a whole bunch of girls, and it’s normal now. It’s not just me.”

YEARSLONG FIGHT:The road to NCHSAA sanctioning girls wrestling
While the sport needed enough participants to get the attention of the NCHSAA, its supporters also expected the numbers to jump after this summer’s news that beginning in the 2023-24 school year, the NCHSAA will officially sanction girls wrestling.
Those projections appear accurate. Three seasons ago, the number of North Carolina girls wrestling in high school was under 400, according to Cheryl Baynard, who organized a group dedicated to getting the sport sanctioned in the state.
Last year, it was up to about 600. This year, it’s jumped to above 900 and potentially crossed four digits. That’s allowed tournaments like the Smoky Mountain Grapple, which concluded Saturday at Harrah’s Cherokee Center, to add a weight class and have fuller brackets than last year.
“We’ve seen the jump,” Enka coach Mark Harris said. “We are learning as we grow, and it’s really been fun to watch the girls create their own culture and their own stamp within that program.” … rest of story at Citizen-times.com/story/sports/high-school/2022/12/22/nc-high-school-girls-wrestling-nchsaa-sanctioned-sport-growth-participation

No. 7 N.C. State wrestling team wins Journeyman Collegiate Duals
Wolfpack heads into 2023 undefeated at 8-0
NEW ORLEANS, LA. N.C. State junior Jarrett Trombley strutted through the halls of the New Orleans Convention Center with an over sized cup in his hand.
Trombley earned the right to carry the hardware, which wasn’t a cup, but a championship trophy.
Over the weekend at the Journeyman Collegiate Duals, four individuals went undefeated as the Wolfpack won the Red Pool, 27-12, with a win over No. 22 Northern Iowa.
No. 7 N.C. State (8-0) also defeated Cal-Poly and Lehigh, giving the Pack three wins over ranked teams in two days.
The finals featured seven matches when ranked opponents went head-to-head. Their wins over Lehigh and Northern Iowa were their first wins in program history in those series.
Head coach Pat Popolizio admittedly had question marks at the beginning of the year with a young roster. After a hot start, some of those have been answered.
“The one thing we can see with our team is we are starting to be a little more consistent,” Popolizio said. “Guys are settling into their style of wrestling and building confidence on stuff that we’ve worked on week to week. That’s what we got out of our team this weekend, guys showing up ready to compete.”
N.C. State won the first three matches over the Panthers (2-1), quickly gaining some important momentum right out the gate.
“You look at that match (early) on paper and there’s a lot of splits,” Popolizio said about the early showdowns. “When you can win those matches that are on paper, big toss ups it gives you some breathing room.” … rest of story at GOpack.com/news/2022/12/20/wrestling-young-n-c-state-wrestling-team-wins-journeyman-collegiate-duals
