IRVING, Texas – Sophomore UNI wrestler Brody Teske was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after going 2-0 on the weekend with both wins coming over ranked opponents. Brown took an early lead, but Teske scrapped hard throughout and earned a takedown with under 10 seconds left in the third period to force sudden-victory. Early in the overtime period, Brown attempted a single-leg, but a scramble ensued and with just 15 seconds left in SV1, he executed a Granby roll and cleared his head to earn the takedown and the 12-10 win. … rest of story at https://unipanthers.com/news/2021/1/19/wrestling-teske-named-big-12-wrestler-of-the-week.aspx?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – LAYOFF IS OVER, WHAT’S NEXT?
By DARREN MILLER hawkeyesports.com
IOWA CITY, Iowa — What’s a layoff?
Head coach Tom Brands opened his postmatch news conference Jan. 15 with the rhetorical question after his University of Iowa wrestling team picked up where it left off 45 weeks ago. Last March, the Hawkeyes won their 36th Big Ten championship in Piscataway, New Jersey, a few days before the sporting world came to a halt because of the coronavirus pandemic.
On Jan. 15, top-ranked Iowa won another Big Ten dual with a dominant display in front of a handful of parents and a few cardboard cutouts, dismantling No. 6 Nebraska, 31-6. The Hawkeyes won the first six bouts — three with bonus points — and owned an insurmountable 24-0 lead before the Huskers got on the board. Making the 25-point dual win more impressive is that Nebraska finished second at the 2020 Big Ten Tournament. “I know they responded well to a long, long layoff,” Brands said. “But really, what’s a layoff? There is no layoff, these guys are all serious about the sport so that question has been answered. We can get better, we have to keep getting better.” … rest of story at https://hawkeyesports.com/news/2021/01/18/layoff-is-over-whats-next/?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
6 } – Illinois makes giant jump into Top 10 after a pair of weekend wins
Manheim, Pennsylvania – After entering the Top 25 last week, Illinois made waves immediately after earning a pair of ranked wins over the weekend, including an 18-15 win over then-No. 7 Ohio State, to vault the Illini into the Top 10 in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll released on Tuesday. Illinois also beat then-No. 21 Wisconsin 21-9. It’s the first time since February of 2017 the Illini have been ranked in the top 10.
Top-ranked Iowa opened up its season with a 31-3 win at home against then-No. 6 Nebraska.
Michigan picked up a 32-6 win over Indiana and improved to 3-0. The Wolverines moved into a second-place tie with Penn State (0-0). It’s also of note historically – the last time Michigan was ranked second was February 21, 2006. Missouri’s fast start continued as they hit the road to Iowa and took home two convincing wins, beating then-No. 10 Iowa State 31-7 and then-No. 20 Northern Iowa 34-9. The Tigers improved to 7-0. … rest of story at http://www.nwcaonline.com/illinois-makes-giant-jump-into-top-10-after-a-pair-of-weekend-wins/?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
7 } – WRESTLING: BUCKEYES BEGIN UNUSUAL JOURNEY TRAVELED BY FEW OTHERS
Ohio State’s football team battled with a season lost then recovered, positive COVID tests and canceled games. Now, Tom Ryan and his wrestling team look ahead to how they will navigate their own season over the course of spring semester. The challenges of playing a season in the midst of a pandemic have not ceased with the turn of the calendar year — nearly a year removed from when COVID-19 initially disrupted the 2019-20 wrestling season. Aware of the challenges faced by sports that have played before his own, Ryan and his team are thankful to have the opportunity to compete. “Right now, I think this team is in a very grateful place,” Ryan said Friday. “Gratitude is moving throughout the program. We’re super grateful we’re going to get to wrestle this year in the midst of a pandemic, so we’re taking it one day at a time.” … rest of story at https://www.thelantern.com/2021/01/wrestling-buckeyes-begin-unusual-journey-traveled-by-few-others/?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

1 } – Decorated alums speak out against Stanford’s intention to cut 11 sports
36 Sports Strong intends to challenge July 8 decision
“What happens when trees fall,” the Stanford Rowing Association Instagram asked on Friday.
Their answer: The rest of the forest hears it. More specifically, alums from all 36 varsity athletics teams currently offered by Stanford join together to defend the metaphoric threatened trees. On July 8, the University announced that it intended to cut 11 sports: men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, co-ed and women’s sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men’s volleyball and wrestling.
The University cited a mounting financial deficit exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, among other factors that prompted the cancellations. The University also announced that the 2020-21 season would be the final year for each of the 11 varsity programs before being downgraded to club teams. … rest of story at https://www.stanforddaily.com/2020/11/22/36-sports-strong/?mc_cid=638194e439&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
2 } – Mark Churella | Intensity Creates Pain For Opponents
Etched in Stone
Mark Churella’s successful high school career caught the attention of top college wrestling programs around the country and while it wasn’t apparent to anyone but him, the only place he was planning on going was to Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan.
Even today, college recruiting pitches can be colorful. Even without the instantaneous technology and communications that we have today, coaches will still try to talk the athlete into believing that their option, where they coach is the best choice.
We continue with Chapter 2 of the Churella story.

3 } – The Guillotine ready to celebrate 50th year of publication in Minnesota
In 1971, St. James High School wrestling coach Paul Krueger was hoping to expand and promote the reaches of wrestling, not only in St. James but throughout the state of Minnesota. He and fellow coach and friend Bill Mohr came up with an idea to start a newspaper, fashioned after Iowa’s state wrestling paper, The Predicament, which highlighted high school wrestling across the Hawkeye State. In a twist of humor—of which Krueger was known for—Krueger named the newspaper The Guillotine, a wrestling move he hated but taught his wrestlers in case they ever needed to get out of it. In that first year, The Guillotine published just four papers. The first edition held features and stories of wrestlers from around the state, including St. James. … rest of story at https://www.stjamesnews.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2020/12/01/guillotine-wrestling-newspaper-ready-celebrate-50th-year-publication-minnesota/6397548002/?mc_cid=580d0bc2a3&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – Friday Feature: Upsets Spark Title Run
EDMOND – Central Oklahoma entered the 2006-07 wrestling season loaded with experienced veterans, returning nine starters from a team that finished fourth in the NCAA Division II national tournament the previous year. The Bronchos had back five All-Americans – 125-pounder Shane Caruthers, 133 Earl Jones, 141 Kyle Evans, 149 Shea Timothy and heavyweight Chris Finn – plus three national qualifiers in 157 Jason Leavitt, 184 Jared Hess and 197 Heath Jolley. Add in two All-Americans from 2005 – 133 Jared Henning and heavyweight Josh LeadingFox – and it was easy to see why UCO entered the season ranked No. 1.
“We’ve got great depth at most weights and if guys don’t go to the next level we’ve got the ability to make changes,” 25th-year head coach David James said in the media guide’s preseason outlook. “If we’re going to win the national championship, we’ve got to have guys step up or they’re not going to be in there.” … rest of story at https://bronchosports.com/news/2020/11/27/wrestling-friday-feature-upsets-spark-title-run.aspx?mc_cid=0d9bace552&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
6 } – ‘Fearless mentality’: Revesz helped build foundation with Pitt-Johnstown wrestling program
John Revesz didn’t win an individual national championship wrestling at Pitt-Johnstown. He wasn’t a member of a Mountain Cats’ NCAA Division II team champion.
But the Central Cambria High School graduate certainly helped build the foundation for those UPJ teams that won it all under Pat Pecora, the winningest coach in the history of the sport at the college level.
Pitt-Johnstown’s first-ever, four-time NCAA Division II All-American wrestler, Revesz died on Friday at age 59, another victim of the COVID-19 pandemic. He had battled health issues in recent years. “You’d be hard-pressed to find a human being that was pound for pound stronger or had more amazing balance than John,” said Dan Revesz, the oldest of five Revesz brothers who made their mark at Pitt-Johnstown. “It came so natural to him. “He had a fearless mentality. He wasn’t afraid of anything,” added Dan, a three-time All-American who was inducted into the Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. “If coach told him to go out there and stand in front of a locomotive, he would do it.” … rest of story at https://www.tribdem.com/sports/fearless-mentality-revesz-helped-build-foundation-with-pitt-johnstown-wrestling-program/article_7096bbcc-3e59-11eb-98cb-333088568c2a.html?mc_cid=2646a1a5c8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
7 } – 20 in ’20 No. 14 – Stephen Abas’ wrestling dominance
(KGPE) — After a brilliant prep career in California, in which he became the seventh wrestler in history to win three California state titles, Stephen Abas would ascend to even greater heights in his time as a Fresno State Bulldog. As a freshman, Abas went 38-3 at 118 pounds and finished fourth at the 1998 NCAA Championships. He then went 37-1 and won a national title the next year at 125 pounds.
Abas took a year off from college competition the following year, and nearly made the Olympic team in 2000. As it turns out, that was just an appetizer for what Abas would do as an upperclassman, when he put together one of the greatest collegiate stretches in the history of the sport.
Using a style that was technically masterful, Abas was dominant at 125 pounds over his junior and senior campaigns, winning two more national titles and going 69-0 over that stretch, during a college streak that saw him win 95 consecutive matches overall. “There’s nothing like the NCAA Tournament for wrestling,” said Abas in the moments after his third NCAA title. “I’m gonna miss it. It was a great time.” … rest of story at https://www.yourcentralvalley.com/news/20-in-20-no-14-abas-dominates-on-the-mat/?mc_cid=065f8820b6&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – Trailblazing Tradition
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A rowdy crowd of wrestling fans gathered around the mat that a young Cyler Sanderson was moments from stepping foot on. He was only 7 at the time, yet his last name drew hordes of wrestling fanatics to the small gymnasium – anxious eyes locked on his every move. “Everyone expects you to win because of who you are,” Sanderson said. “But everyone always cheers when you lose because of who you are.” The constant attention is justified however, as the Sanderson name holds a rich history of success, glory and victory. Twenty-two Sandersons have won individual Utah high school state titles, while reaching NCAA Division I All-American status eight times. With a family legacy of that magnitude, it comes as little surprise that Cyler would grow up to be a wrestling icon. … rest of story at https://gopsusports.com/news/2020/11/17/wrestling-trailblazing-tradition.aspx?mc_cid=97ab69a0c8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
10 } – Reflections on a wild, wacky 2020
2020 was a year like no other.
And the wrestling community certainly felt the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic with the cancellation of the NCAA Championships and the postponement of the Olympic Games. High school wrestling is back in full swing, the college season is about to start and big international events are set to start happening in early 2021 leading into the Tokyo Olympics.
Here are my thoughts and reflections with the holidays just around the corner: Jordan Burroughs is 32 years old, but the four-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist is still really good. He likely will have to beat two-time world champion Kyle Dake to make his third straight Olympic team, but Burroughs is still wrestling at an extremely high level. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
Kudos to FloWrestling, Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, the Hawkeye Wrestling Club and so many others for holding these live wrestling events during the pandemic. These events have given the wrestlers an opportunity to compete in live matches and also provided the fans with a chance to watch some top-level wrestling. I can’t wait for the college season to start, in all three levels. The Iowa Hawkeyes missed out on an opportunity to win the NCAA title they were expected to win in 2020. The Hawkeyes, led by superstar Spencer Lee, will be favored again. But Penn State may have something to say about it. … rest of story at https://intermatwrestle.com/articles/24047?mc_cid=0d946e15c0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
11 } – The Mind of a Massa
Coming from a Michigan family that has dealt with so much wrestling heartbreak, Logan has regained a positive attitude and success on the mat
By Mike Finn
In 2020, most Americans have had a difficult year. One of the lone exceptions may be Michigan wrestler Logan Massa. “2020 has been a great year,” said Massa, who will be a senior in Ann Arbor this winter. “I’m enjoying it right now. I just got engaged to my beautiful fiancée. My sister just got a new dog. We are just enjoying life in the Massa household. We are just trying to be a close family and as successful as God will want us be.” It’s obviously not that Logan, nor any of his family members — including older brother Taylor, sister Kameron, and parents Rodger and Rhonda Massa, who hail from the central Michigan community of St. Johns — don’t care that many have suffered from the pandemic that has prevailed throughout much of 2020. … rest of story at https://www.win-magazine.com/2020/12/25/the-mind-of-a-massa/?mc_cid=c19dc39a02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b#utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-mind-of-a-massa

1 } – (Illinois) Voices of stalled season | Carbondale’s Luke Daly making best of lost wrestling season
CARBONDALE — Luke Daly wanted his senior wrestling season more than anything. The COVID-19 pandemic had other plans. Standing at 6-feet tall and 180 pounds, Daly’s goal entering high school was to win a state championship. His goal was within reach last season, but the only wrestler standing in the way was Marian Central Catholic’s Dylan Connell — a three-time state champion.
Daly’s loss to Connell in the semifinals left a chip on his shoulder. A chip that he was eager to shake until his wrestling season was pushed to the summer as a ‘higher risk’ sport according to IHSA guidelines. But a pandemic isn’t going to get in the way of Daly’s goals. Instead, he’s appreciating the little things, like spending more time with his family and preparing for college. “If there’s been one positive with this pandemic then at least it’s brought my family and I closer together,” Daly said. … rest of story at https://thesouthern.com/sports/voices-of-stalled-season-carbondales-luke-daly-making-best-of-lost-wrestling-season/article_63b2abb6-33af-5bd3-9634-8ed7ff789259.html?mc_cid=4a4f0e7778&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
2 } – (Penna.) Tom Elling on wrestling: Wrestling is back in the area
Wrestling is back! At least for a while and with several modifications. While I don’t have the abbreviated schedules for the area teams, I will bring those you as the season unfolds. You have probably read or heard that the number of pre-competitions have been reduced for this season only.
District 6 wrestling chair Phil Riccio of Altoona released the tentative plans for the District 6 individual tournament on Monday.
Riccio — after consultation with several of the district coaches — laid out the following schedule:
Class AA Four Sectionals held on Feb. 16. The top 2 advance to districts and will wrestle for a true second. … rest of story at https://www.lockhaven.com/sports/local-sports/2021/01/tom-elling-on-wrestling-wrestling-is-back-in-the-area/?mc_cid=4a4f0e7778&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
And Eric Knopsnyder | COVID-19 pandemic alters wrestling’s postseason look
Most local schools only have a few competitions under their belts, but the wrestling postseason is beginning to take shape – maybe not in terms of which teams or individuals will be the top seeds – but at least in how it will be conducted. As with nearly everything during the pandemic, it’s subject to change at a moment’s notice, but dates and locations have been confirmed for District 6 events. As per the district wrestling website, four Class 2A sectional tournaments will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 16, with the top two in each section advancing to that Saturday’s District 6 event in Altoona. The sectional events will include a “true second-place match,” which means that the third-place finisher will get a chance to face the runner-up after the finals if the second-place finisher did not already beat the bronze medalist. … rest of story at https://www.tribdem.com/coronavirus/eric-knopsnyder-covid-19-pandemic-alters-wrestlings-postseason-look/article_407d2c1a-5ec9-11eb-8a34-13d8616e4aa0.html?mc_cid=4ec9be6c16&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – State (Ohio) wrestling tournament pulled from OSU’s Schottenstein Center
COLUMBUS – The 2021 state high school wrestling tournament will not be held at The Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center. In an email to high school wrestling coaches around the state, Tyler Brooks, Director of Officiating and Sport Management for the Ohio High School Athletic Association, told coaches that the state tournament will not be conducted at the Schottenstein Center for two primary reasons. “Spectator attendance restrictions and cost,” Brooks said in the email.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, spectators at high school sporting events have been extremely limited during the 2020-21 high school sports season and with the state wrestling tournament normally being one of the biggest draws for spectators, the decision has been made to remove the tournament from OSU’s Schottenstein

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio High School Athletic Association said Thursday afternoon it is working to determine state tournament venues for boys and girls basketball, wrestling and ice hockey in March. 4 } – Developing slowly and correctly can lead to long-term success in wrestling (Youth)
As wrestlers continue to develop a system for long-term athletic development, there is still a philosophical battle over how much is too much. When is the best time to start competing? How often should a young wrestler compete in any given year? Does it matter how many matches you win at the age of seven?
Many of the best youth coaches will say that you can’t predict future success when a wrestler is in grade school. Every person — regardless of sport — develops differently. This can complicate development if parents and coaches want success too early, too often.
Every wrestler has his or her own formula that can work — and there will always be an exception to standard protocol — but there are fundamentals and best practices that can be followed for best results.
Jed Smith and Peter Smolianov — authors of the book “Fringe Methodologies in High Performance and Health” — are advocating that young wrestlers develop slowly and correctly. That can mean forgoing immediate success for higher-level success as an adult. They are suggesting a basic level of knowledge before moving to another level. This isn’t unlike a belt system that is used in martial arts. Focusing too much on results at a young age can be problematic if you aren’t proficient at a skill.
For example, an eight-year-old might win matches because he is better developed and stronger, but that does not mean he knows how to execute a technique properly. Competitions can get in the way of development if there are pressures to win all the time. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1610944673708&twSessionId=srohqbmpvb&postId=973541135&mc_cid=c35ed28379&mc_eid=%5B2ef7cbca4b%5D
5 } – (Iowa) SEP vs. WSR: A Rare, Regular-Season Rematch of State Duals
This weekend brings the next installment in what has been a battle for the top of the IAHSAA wrestling podium in Wells Fargo Arena for the past two years. Southeast Polk and Waverly-Shell Rock face off in a rare regular season dual at Dubuque Hempstead on Saturday live on IAwrestle’s Rokfin., thanks in large part to the novel coronavirus pandemic that has shaken up each teams’ regular competition schedule. “Polk was supposed to be at the Cheesehead, and we were supposed to be at the Clash and [Dubuque Hempstead coach] Brett [Haas] kind of noticed that and said, ‘Hey, let’s get together and wrestle.’” WSR head coach Eric Whitcome said. “It was something that the three of us really wanted to do anyway at some point, being able to bring our teams together, and so we’re fortunate for that.” In large part, this weekend for all three teams serves as a measuring stick for where they are now and how far they have to go until they take the mats in Des Moines from February 18-20. It provides WSR and SEP a unique advantage, too, to get a practice run at a possible dual team finals matchup when the season comes down to the wire.

6 } – Helton Twins working their way to becoming the best on the mat
(Council Bluffs, IA.) – Everything you’ve heard about twins … about sibling rivalry, about not being able to tell identical twins apart, that they are telepathic, and a hundred other distinctions, are often conjectures.
Take the Helton twins, wrestlers at Council Bluffs-St. Albert. Yea, they kind of look alike, and yea, people have a difficult time telling them apart. But before we go further, you need to know that the twins are really triplets. Yep, that’s right. Rounding out the third of the threesome is their sister, Anna.
But wait, there’s more. The twin brothers have four older sisters” Celine 22, Ellie 21, Grace 19, and Clare 17. So, the boys are outnumbered in the Helton family.
Now, on to wrestling.
John, jr., wrestles at 132, David at 145. Both are sophomores. The twin sons of John, sr., and Ann Helton, however, wrestle differently from one another. In practice, they occasionally wrestle each other, but for the most part, the two try to avoid partnering up. The latter because (Guess?) they know each other’s moves too well. … rest of story at https://www.thepredicament.com/2021/01/helton-twins-working-their-way-to-becoming-the-best-on-the-mat/?mc_cid=c6c3fe425c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
7 } – Colorado High School Wrestling Season 2021
Let’s look at what certainly is not a normal high school wrestling season in Colorado. With covid19 pandemic in its 10th month of control in Colorado and USA, high schools around the state have changed their normal in school learning and have put student-athletes on the back burner. Students are learning from home with little contact with teachers, friends and other classmates. Masks must be worn at all times and limited number of people are to gather in one location.
So, how does this effect high school wrestling in Colorado. To start off the wrestling season is shorten in length and the number of matches cut down to 20. Teams can only have 20 total competitions – duals, tri or quad meets with no more than 25 competitors in a gym or practice area at one time per CHSAA. There will be no individual tournament in the regular season, but postseason tournaments (regional and state will have a limited number of wrestlers – no big all classification at the Pepsi Center). But worse of all some school districts and county health departments have shut down wrestling for the season even thru Colorado State Health and CHSAA have approved the sport.
It all started in the fall of 2020 when Mapleton School District shut down all sports for the year, leaving student-athletes from Skyview (Academy High School) out in the cold and no place to really call home. Then this week on Tuesday Jan 5,2021 Boulder County Health Dept. along with Boulder Valley School District and St Vrain School District did not approve wrestling to have a season. … rest of story at http://www.insidecoloradowrestling.com/index.php/16-high-school/1859-colorado-high-school-wrestling-season-2021?mc_cid=ee9459dd97&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – Connecticut’s DPH still thinks wrestling is too risky during a pandemic
In early November, Connecticut’s Department of Public Health (DPH) didn’t recommend that wrestling be allowed in the state this winter to help stop the spread of the contagious COVID-19 virus. Eight weeks later, DPH has not changed their stance.
In a letter to the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) last week, DPH said they do not recommend any activities in wrestling be allowed this winter season. Small group conditioning and non-contact skill building activities would be allowed but that could be challenging since wrestling is a contact sport
Wrestling is classified as high risk by the state and the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS). Sports classified as moderate risk sports – such as basketball, ice hockey, gymnastics and indoor track – will be allowed with modifications, which would include all participants, coaches and officials wearing a mask. The CIAC’s Board of Control is scheduled to make a decision Thursday on winter sports based on the Department of Health’s guidance and recommendations from the governor’s office. … rest of story at https://ctwrestling.com/2021/01/connecticuts-dph-still-thinks-wrestling-is-too-risky-during-a-pandemic/3732/?mc_cid=7d0bae3ce9&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
And Before it even began, the wrestling season is over
For high school wrestlers around Connecticut, it was a day of disappointment. The 2020-21 season that never began is over. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference’s (CIAC) Board of Control released their winter sports plan for high school athletics during the COVID-19 pandemic and it did not include wrestling. Wrestlers had hoped to compete during an alternative season, a 10-week block of time from February 22 through April 16. But wrestling and other sports classified as high risk, such as football, can’t even consider practicing until the winter season ends on March 28 thanks to an executive order from Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont in November. The CIAC doesn’t want to encroach on the spring sports, which was eliminated entirely last spring when the coronavirus began sweeping across the nation in March. There will be no wrestling or football competition at the high school this year in Connecticut. … rest of story at https://ctwrestling.com/2021/01/before-it-even-began-the-wrestling-season-is-over/3742/?mc_cid=985ebae38c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
10 } – AIA (Arizona) Executive Board meeting Tuesday: Will there be a winter sports re-vote?
Four days after the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s Executive Board voted 5-4 to cancel winter sports, that group will meet again on Tuesday. Since the vote to cancel because of surging COVID-19 infections that placed Arizona No. 1 in the nation, there has been a big backlash from the Arizona high school basketball, soccer and wrestling communities against the decision. On Sunday, the AIA placed on its calendar a special Executive Board meeting for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. … rest of story at https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/high-school/2021/01/10/aia-executive-board-meeting-tuesday-there-re-vote/6617601002/?mc_cid=01186bea70&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
And – Pain of pandemic replaces sports memories for athletes
I broke news for the first time on Friday. Not as a sportswriter. I’ve been lucky enough to have good sources over the years to get out in front of the news and be the first to land a story about this or that. It can be a great feeling of accomplishment and reiterate that this is what you are supposed to be doing. It comes in the form of a tweet or link to a story. Sometimes the news isn’t great and can be hurtful to some but that was a result I never really saw in person.
That wasn’t the case today. I broke news as a teacher for the first time to a couple of athletes – a wrestler and a girls basketball player – in my class that the winter sports season was canceled. It wasn’t embedded in a tweet or in a 500-word story underneath my byline.
It was right in front of me. Their minds were working as soon as the words left my mouth. … rest of story at https://arizonavarsity.rivals.com/news/pain-of-pandemic-replaces-memorable-sports-memories?mc_cid=ee9459dd97&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
11 } – (Minnesota) Rough-and-tumble Reid Ballantyne seeks to achieve wrestling rarity
The Stillwater senior, whose brawling style has brought 158 victories and injuries along the way, is seeking to become the seventh Minnesota wrestler to win five individual state titles. When he was about 10 years old, an age when many wrestlers are just getting started and finding their way around a mat, Reid Ballantyne had had enough. Ballantyne had the experienced normal youth wrestling ups and downs — some promising victories mixed with a few emotionally crushing losses. The latter, Ballantyne thought, were just too much to endure. So he made up his mind that he would never again be willing to allow an opponent an advantage. Losing never sat well. Giving up so much as a single point was a personal insult.
“It was never the wins that drove him, it was always the losses,” said the Stillwater senior’s father, Steve. “They were getting tougher for him to deal with every year. That’s when he became bulletproof.” Said Ballantyne, simply, “To me, every point counts. I hate getting scored on.” With his final season at Stillwater set to begin as winter sports competitions resume … rest of story at https://www.mnwrestlinghub.com/news_article/show/1140447?mc_cid=7d0bae3ce9&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

1 } – High School Insider: First all-girls dual in Montana demonstrates sport’s rapid growth
The first all-girls high school wrestling dual meet in Montana high school wrestling history took place Saturday when Kalispell Flathead High School battled district foe Kalispell Glacier High school at the Glacier High School gym in Kalispell, Montana. While the outcome was lopsided (Flathead won 78-6), coaches from both teams took a big picture approach to the historic dual. “I think it is a huge step forward for girls wrestling in the state of Montana,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said. “It was really special that in the first year of it being sanctioned we were able to line up 13 matches between two teams in the same valley. I think it is good for the rest of the state to see that this is a sport that girls want to do and hopefully it will get the ball rolling on recruiting and building programs statewide.” Jeff Thompson oversees the boys and girls wrestling programs at Flathead, while Amber Downing and Sully Sullivan are co-head coaches for the Flathead girls wrestling teams. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1609991250056&twSessionId=ddygjjyzzh&postId=937663135&mc_cid=4295bf0eb8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – HOW THE DECISION GETS MADE
The NCAA has published a series of guidelines and Q&As for COVID-19. Each division has their own document which can be found on the NCAA’s COVID-19 website. There is a section on that page entitled Division IIII COVID-19 Resources that has a lot of information about NCAA actions since March of 2020. One document there is the 2020-21 Division III COVID-19 Question and Answer Guide. That document provides information on various sections of the NCAA Division III bylaws and how those rules might be temporarily altered due to the pandemic. Of particular interest is the section beginning on page 26: BYLAW 18 – CHAMPIONSHIPS. Questions 1 and 4 are pertinent to the wrestling season.
Question No. 1: What is the minimum sponsorship threshold to merit conducting winter and spring championships?
Answer: The Division III Championships Committee affirmed its position that for sports with 50 or fewer sponsoring institutions 90 percent of sponsoring member institutions must sponsor the sport to merit a championship. For sports with sponsorship between 51 and 200 institutions, 70 percent; and sports with 201 or more sponsoring institutions, 60 percent. Note that in order for any championship to be cancelled it would still require being moved through the governance process.
Question No. 4: What are the minimum contest requirements for winter championships consideration?
Answer: Contests minimums to be eligible for consideration to winter
championships have been reduced by 50 percent and are as follows: … rest of story at https://www.d3wrestle.com/how-the-decision-gets-made/?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

And RWU Announces Cancelation Of Winter Sports Season
With the health, safety, and well-being of our student-athletes and the entire campus community as our top priority, Roger Williams University regretfully announces the cancellation of the winter sports season. The challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose across the region, including the enhanced concerns about indoor sports, was the primary determining factor in this difficult decision.
The RWU campus community and athletic department will continue to monitor and assess the feasibility of conducting athletic events. The department hopes to have competitive opportunities for winter sports later this spring if possible. In addition, we remain committed to the safe implementation of competition for spring sports if public health conditions improve considerably.
While they will not be able to play in a regular winter season, the Roger Williams University Department of Athletics has developed healthy guidelines and procedures for our student-athletes to remain engaged in fitness and training … rest of the story at https://rwuhawks.com/news/2021/1/13/rwu-statement-on-winter-sports.aspx

5 } – COACHES GET CREATIVE TO MAKE THE MOST OF A TOUGH SITUATION WITH THEIR TEAMS
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — In late July, the Landmark Conference Executive Board agreed upon the postponement of fall contests and championships with the hopes of returning to play this spring. Meanwhile, the head coaches at Elizabethtown College had to get creative to be able to meet the needs of their student-athletes during the first semester of the academic year. The majority of the contact between coaches and athletes was done virtually, prominently on Zoom, but also through group chats and texts.
Britt Moore and Adam Sheibley, men’s basketball and baseball, respectively, spoke to their guys in one-on-one meetings as much as they could. “The most frequent group was the first years just to check in with them on academics,” said Sheibley. … Another activity, which several programs have utilized, was a book reading where the whole team took part. The wrestling team, led by head coach Eric Walker, read Habitudes: The Art of Self Leadership starting back in July. “We met via Zoom in accountability groups of five or six guys, covering a chapter a week,” Walker said. “Once we got to school, we’d do one group meeting then break off into those groups to have discussions on the book.” … rest of story at https://etownbluejays.com/news/2021/1/19/general-coaches-get-creative-to-make-the-most-of-a-tough-situation-with-their-teams.aspx?mc_cid=0d6ab523a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – Wrestler Wyatt Adams Grapples with Success in the Classroom to Graduate Early
ADRIAN, Mich.–As a three-year member of the Adrian College men’s wrestling team, Wyatt Adams knows what it’s like to work hard on the mat under fifth-year head coach Bill Schindel. He also used that determination and work ethic in the classroom as he earned his bachelor’s degree of business administration in accounting in December in just two-and-a-half years. That’s quite an accomplishment for the Schoolcraft High School product from Vicksburg…for any student-athlete to complete their undergraduate work in less than three years no less!
But Adams didn’t anticipate graduating early–it just happened that way. “Graduating early was not always in my plans. I had a great advisor who helped me strategically schedule my courses and obtain my degree quickly,” he explains. “The main reason behind graduating early was to seek a higher level of education sooner. Because I am planning to attend graduate and law school for the next two to six years, I wanted to get my first degree as quickly as possible.” … rest of story at https://adrianbulldogs.com/sports/m-wrestl/2020-21/releases/20201209lmk90n?mc_cid=5a9932a916&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
8 } – ZASTROW BRINGS SUCCESS, EXCELLENCE TO THE MAT
By: Erin Madden
BEREA, Ohio – Receiving a national award is a defining moment in any coach’s career. For Jason Zastrow, that moment carried a little extra significance. That year’s national tournament was hosted by BW and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission at the historic Cleveland Public Auditorium, practically in the Yellow Jackets’ backyard.
By the end of the tournament, yes, Wartburg (Iowa) College had won its third-straight title, but Zastrow was the fan favorite as he was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Assistant Coach of the Year. 11 } – Wrestling: Malave Inspired By Hometown NFL Team and Coach To Get Ready For 2021
As Josh Malave began preparing for his fifth season as Mount Union wrestling coach, he looked to his favorite hometown team and their coach for inspiration. Malave knew that preparation would be different as the effects of the CoVID-19 pandemic stopped last season while the nationally ranked Purple Raiders were on the mat preparing for the 2020 NCAA Championships and it further caused a two-month delay to the start of the 2020-21 season. The native Clevelander observed how Kevin Stefanski got the Cleveland Browns ready for his first NFL season as head coach without the benefit of training camp and the other traditional methods to get ready for a season. “They had to adapt and really focus on people and getting to know themselves on a personal level,” commented Malave. “Once they accomplished that, they went through what the team needed to do on the field.” Malave and each wrestler on team related to each other through four key themes – Heartbreak, History, Hero, and Hope. Personal heartbreak and setbacks allowed them to understand each persons history and heroes that have inspired them to where they are and their hopes for the this season and beyond. … rest of story at https://athletics.mountunion.edu/sports/wrest/2020-21/releases/20210121i5j3p2?mc_cid=5a9932a916&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – In such unprecedented times, the Millersville wrestling team is utilizing everything at its disposal to improve. Hours that would usually be spent on managing weight or preparing for upcoming matches has instead been used to work on fine-tuning and diagnosing areas of need that should pay off in the long run. “We were able to kind of individualize some training and really dive into different situations and dissect them like scientists,” said head coach Kerry Regner. “You don’t always do that because usually from September through March you’re focused on training. A lot of times there’s no sense of urgency to stop and say “Hey, let’s go over this.” So that’s what we’re doing this fall.” “I think something that the coaching staff does well here is we individualize the athletes’ strengths and weaknesses. … rest of story at https://millersvilleathletics.com/news/2020/12/8/state-of-the-marauders-wrestling-using-opportunities-to-diagnose-design-and-improve.aspx?mc_cid=372ecbefe1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
5 } – Bellarmine Wrestling adopts families in need for Christmas
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In a year with so many people being unemployed and many families struggling to make ends meet, the holidays can be a challenging time. So this holiday season, the Bellarmine Knights wrestling team wanted to give back to the community once again by adopting a family for Christmas. The team thought it would be an excellent way to spread some cheer in a year tarnished so severely by COVID-19. The Knights reached deep into their own pockets and raised an unprecedented amount of nearly $600, which was enough money to not only adopt one family but two this year. Both families that were chosen are facing extreme hardships, even beyond those that most have in a pandemic year. The first family chosen was that of a young man, who lost his father several years ago, and is currently being raised by a step grandfather who is presently dealing with many serious health issues of his own. The team also adopted a young girl, who is battling leukemia, and her siblings. … rest of story at https://athletics.bellarmine.edu/news/2020/12/22/wrestling-adopts-families-in-need-for-christmas.aspx?mc_cid=f9e49e1788&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
6 } – Cael Carlson: Family and Farming
While wrestling has been an instrumental part of Cael Carlson’s family over the years, there is still one thing that runs deeper in the Carlson blood: the family farm. About two hours west of the Twin Cities is where you will find the Carlson dairy farm in Pennock, Minnesota, a farm that consists of over 1800 Holstein dairy cows and was founded by Cael’s great, great grandfather in 1891. Since then, the farm has been maintained by Cael’s grandfather, who wrestled in high school, as well as his dad and uncle, Chad and Carl, who combined for three Minnesota state titles and both competed for the Gophers in the 1990s. Now, Cael, who has two state titles in his own right for Willmar High School, has every intention of following in his family’s footsteps and becoming a fifth-generation dairy farmer. Before that, he hopes to build on an impressive debut as a true freshman in 2019-20. … rest of story at https://gophersports.com/news/2020/12/22/wrestling-cael-carlson-family-and-farming.aspx?mc_cid=f9e49e1788&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
