Women’s Wrestling News – # 54
TDR Editor’s Notes ; News of new college coaches and star wrestlers and teams are included in the stories below. It has been amazing to see the growth in womne’s wrestling at the collegiate and high school levels in the past 10 years. These will be hard to measure this seasons with the disruptions and postponements caused by the pandemic.

1 } – New Women’s Collegiate Head Coaches for 2020-21
The women’s college wrestling season is upon us! Though there are still plenty of areas in the country where wrestling has been delayed, a handful of women’s programs have hit the mats for competitions. With a new season comes a wave of coaching changes, which is certainly the case on the women’s side. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of women’s programs that regularly deal with turnover from the head coaching position. Below we’ll discuss seven teams that will be under new leadership for the 2020-21.
This does not include brand-new programs that will compete for the first time this season. We have already mentioned those squads and their respective head coaches here.
Brewton-Parker College – Devane Dodgens
The administration at Brewton-Parker College didn’t have to look very far to find their latest head coach in Devane Dodgens. Devane was coaching in-state for Life University’s men’s team and will assist in that capacity at BPC, as well. Life was also where Dodgens competed collegiately and he finished as a two-time NAIA All-American, taking seventh and third. Before returning to Life to coach, Devane was heavily involved in Georgia’s club scene and was an assistant at the high school level. Dodgens is the fourth head coach in as many years for the Barons, so hopefully, he’ll bring some stability to the program.
Eastern Oregon – Carlene Sluberski
Carlene Sluberski takes over at Eastern Oregon after spending the previous two seasons as the head coach at the University of Providence. In 2018-19, Sluberski oversaw the first NAIA All-American for Providence as Dajan Treder placed third at 123 lb weight class. Her 2019-20 squad finished third in the Cascade Collegiate Conference … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/womens-wrestling/new-womens-collegiate-head-coaches-for-2020-21/79525?mc_cid=580d0bc2a3&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

TOM had the opportunity to talk with Emma Bruntil just days before she takes the mat opposite Macey Kilty in the main event of the Tar Heel Open. This will be a rematch of the 2019 Senior National semifinals in which Emma prevailed over the Cadet World Champion, Kilty. Emma would go on to claim the title at 62 kg. Bruntil talks about how this event came about and her vision for women competing in matches like this in the future. She is also very candid about an injury that sidelined her over the spring and summer, which prevented her from competing until now. Emma gives us insight into how she prepares for a single event like this and how it may differ from a large tournament like a Trials or Open. She wraps it up with … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/womens-wrestling/emma-bruntil-talks-tar-heel-open/79536?mc_cid=29548697b5&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
THWC Preview: Emma Bruntil vs Macey Kilty
Chapel Hill, NC – – The Tar Heel Wrestling Club is presenting a 15-match lineup as they join the growing number of stand-alone and recurring card-style events on Friday night. For the first time on a lineup of all but one men’s matches, the women’s match is the main event—and the matchup is main-event worthy. Tar Heel WC wrestler Macey Kilty and McKendree’s Emma Bruntil will have a rematch of the 2019 Senior Nationals semifinal. This showcase is a great move for wrestling and an actionable follow-up on behalf of Head Coach Coleman Scott’s penned support for women’s wrestling at the University of North Carolina. Macey Kilty had dominant performances as the back-to-back 62 kg champion at UWW Junior and U23 Nationals in Omaha last month. 4 } – Colorado Mesa University’s Kelly Wrestling on the Big Stage
Head Coach Travis Mercado first met Tristan Kelly back in 2018 when he first accepted the job as the first ever head coach for the CMU women’s wrestling program. Mercado was on the coaching staff for USA Wrestling’s national team and was able to meet Kelly at some of the national camps two years ago.
Kelly was a junior wrestling for Douglas County High School in Castle Rock at this time but already had her eyes set on CMU, which was the first university in Colorado to implement women’s wrestling as an NCAA Sports. Two years later, Kelly is a freshman at CMU looking to add to her numerous accolades from her high school career.
The Erie native is a three-time Colorado State Champion, 2019 Cadet Pan American Games Champion, 2018 Cadet and Junior Fargo Champion, and USA Junior World Team member. “Her work ethic is some of the best I’ve ever seen,” Travis Mercado said. “This girl will come in every single day and wrestle. She will grab one of the dummies, Bulgarian bags, assault bike, and come in and ask “What’s next? What’s the next thing to do?”
Even in the time of COVID where the season is always in doubt and practices have to be altered to meet protocol, Kelly, along with the rest of the wrestling program, continues to work hard and perform highly at competition. Tristan won the UWW (United World Wrestling) Junior National Championship at 76kg back on Nov. 13 and then placed fifth at 76kg during … rest of story at https://cmumavericks.com/news/2020/12/2/womens-wrestling-feature-cmus-kelly-wrestling-on-the-big-stage.aspx?mc_cid=580d0bc2a3&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – Terry Steiner: What I learned from Troy Steiner
Identical twins Troy and Terry Steiner of Bismarck, North Dakota, attended the University of Iowa where they wrestled under Dan Gable.
Troy was a four-time All-American, placing fifth, second, first, and third at the NCAA Championships (1990-93). He competed at 142 pounds in his first three seasons before dropping down to 134 pounds his senior year to make room for true freshman Lincoln McIlravy to enter the lineup at 142 pounds. McIlravy went on to become a three-time NCAA champion and a four-time finalist.
Terry was a three-time All-American, placing third, fifth and first at the NCAA Championships (1991-93) at 150 pounds. Troy is currently the head wrestling coach at Fresno State while Terry is the current head women’s national team coach for USA Wrestling.
The following are Terry’s words on what he learned from his identical twin brother, Troy.
PERSISTENCE
“Troy was always persistent and consistent in how he went about his business on a day to day basis. He just focused on the task at hand and not worrying about everything else around him. 4 } – Friday Feature: Going Out In Style
EDMOND – Central Oklahoma entered the 1988-89 wrestling season on a mission. After all, the Bronchos had finished national runner-up the previous year, which was unacceptable to a program that had come to dominate the NAIA ranks. “Everybody’s working hard to get that championship back after not winning it last year,” head coach David James told the Vista. “I don’t think we paid the price last year, so we’re making sure we do this time and hopefully it will pay off with another national title.” It did.
UCO ended its affiliation with the NAIA in style, capturing its fifth championship in six years and the eighth in 11 seasons. The Bronchos moved to NCAA Division II in 1989-90. Central figured to be a prime challenger entering the ’88-89 campaign, with two-time national champion Johnny Nimmo and two-time All-American Shawn Fleming leading the way. Senior transfers Marc Hull and Tony Pacheco were also expected to make big impacts. The Bronchos started the dual season 1-3, with the losses coming to ranked Division I rivals Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Lock Haven. UCO then knocked off Missouri 23-18 to ignite an 11-match winning streak and finished 12-3.
Six tournaments – four opens and two invitationals — were also sprinkled in the schedule. The Bronchos ran away with the Southwest Missouri Invitational crown behind five individual winners (Fleming, … rest of story at https://bronchosports.com/news/2020/10/9/wrestling-friday-feature-going-out-in-style.aspx?mc_cid=dc6ecdfa42&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – History Repeats Itself
Before he assumed the coveted Bellator Light Heavyweight World Championship title, Phil Davis just wanted to visit the rainforest. Luckily, a whirlwind start to his professional mixed martial arts career would present the former Penn State wrestler with the chance to compete at UFC 163 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
Weeks before his highly-anticipated match against Brazilian fighter Lyoto Machida, Davis witnessed a brutal interaction at a Brazilian soccer match that resulted in the death of a player and a referee – illuminating the exasperating tension in Brazilian athletics.
“That is a lot to take in the week before your supposed to go down to Brazil to fight a Brazilian national treasure,” Davis said. “It’s not worth all that for me. And there was definitely a lot of pressure going into that fight.”
Apprehensive about his upcoming fight, Davis decided to set aside his dreams of exploring the Amazon to focus solely on his strict training regimen.
Despite the pressures leading up to their 2013 bout, Davis prevailed by a unanimous decision – establishing himself as a force in the UFC Light Heavyweight division. It was after this fight that Davis gained the confidence to fuel him into the championship and beyond.
“The first time he fought me, I was still very young and only had less than 12 fights under my belt. Now I’m much more mature and have a rounded game that I can do knockouts with both hands and at least one foot,” Davis laughed. “I now feel comfortable anywhere the fight takes place, but that just wasn’t true the first time I fought.” … rest of story at https://gopsusports.com/news/2020/10/8/wrestling-history-repeats-itself.aspx?mc_cid=a13c46544f&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

8 } – ABBOTT BLOG: WHY GREG STROBEL MEANS SO MUCH TO ME, AND TO WRESTLING
As I was driving with my work colleagues from Colorado to Iowa to attend the Senior Nationals, I received a shocking call from USA Wrestling President Bruce Baumgartner that shook me to the core. Bruce told me that Greg Strobel had passed away. It has really thrown me for a loop. I feel compelled to share some thoughts about Greg as we all come together as a wrestling family this weekend at Senior Nationals.
I first got to know Greg Strobel when I was hired as Communications Manager at USA Wrestling in 1988. I knew of Greg Strobel through my years as an athlete and journalist. Everybody knew about Greg. From the day I joined the company, he was welcoming, friendly, supporting and full of knowledge. He made me feel at home. One of my first thoughts when I heard the news was from my first Olympic Games, the 1988 Seoul Olympics, only a few months after I was hired. It was my first overseas trip. For some reason, Greg and I ended up at an Olympic-related social on the edge of Seoul, way up on a large hill. It was night, and we had a glorious view of one of the world’s largest cities, spread across the valley and lit up for miles. Greg basically said, “Enjoy this when you can.” It was my first true taste of the life I had ahead of me within the international wrestling community. … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/October/10/Abbott-Blog-Why-Greg-Strobel-means-so-much?mc_cid=b223987602&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
9} – Above all, Greg Strobel was a teacher — of wrestling, of young athletes and of life
When Jody Karam looked at Greg Strobel, the former Lehigh head wrestling coach who died Thursday at 68, he didn’t necessarily see one of the NCAA’s most respected coaches who won 189 matches and six EIWA championships for the Mountain Hawks. And he didn’t necessarily see a two-time NCAA champion for Oregon State who won the Outstanding Wrestler award at nationals in 1973. Or a two-time Olympic coach, or a national freestyle coach, or a multiple-time coach of the year at multiple levels, or a powerful USA Wrestling official, or a member of the NCAA rules committee, or a valued Lehigh athletic administrator, or the EIWA executive director. … rest of story at https://www.lehighvalleylive.com/sports/2020/10/above-all-greg-strobel-was-a-teacher-of-wrestling-of-young-athletes-and-of-life.html?mc_cid=b223987602&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
10 } – Matt Lindland: My Greatest Loss
Matt Lindland won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games at 76 kilograms and a silver medal at the 2001 World Championships at 85 kilograms in Greco-Roman. Lindland breaks down his loss to Kardanov during the finals of the Olympic Games and what he learned from his loss that prevented him from becoming an Olympic champion.
Move up, not down
“I guess it would be against (Murat) Kardanov (of Russia) at the Olympic Games in Sydney. I think my biggest mistake was cutting to 76 kilograms. I think that was a mistake. I truly believe I should have moved up years before that.”
“In 1996, when I was wrestling at 74 kilograms, I was ready to move up to 82 (kilograms) and they bumped 82 up to 85 and they bumped 74 up to 76. That was a big jump. Moving up to 76 gave me two more kilos. I stayed in that weight category for a quad longer than I should have. I think that was the biggest lesson I learned from that match. I got beat. I got turned and didn’t get my opportunity on top until the last period and I wasn’t able to score on my feet against Kardanov in the finals of the Games. Even though I took a silver medal the next year (at the World Championships) in the finals to the Georgian.”
“I think moving up a weight category, if this is for publication, I would definitely advise, especially younger athletes, is to move up weight categories when they start to grow instead of maintaining that weight as long as you can. Just take the opportunity to get better in your craft and move up weight categories as your body starts growing. I think everybody grows at a different rate. I think I put on a lot of size right after college and continued to grow as I was a senior-level athlete.”
What would it have done to win an Olympic gold medal?
“I have no idea. That was Rulon’s year to win the gold in an iconic fashion … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1602644514411&twSessionId=katzbfkdqt&postId=869262135&mc_cid=2844d9a77e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

1 } – (Arizona) AIA board eliminates wrestling invitationals, reduces basketball, soccer tourneys amid pandemic
Arizona high school winter sports will look different this year because of the pandemic. There will be no more wrestling invitationals but muti-team meets can be held for schools that don’t have enough wrestlers, as long as no more than one match is conducted per wrestler that day, under revised guidelines approved by the Arizona Interscholastic Association Thursday. For basketball and soccer, only one tournament per school can be played and only during winter break when the schools are not in session. The tournaments can include no more than eight teams with no out-of-state teams and no adjacent courts and fields to be used, under the revisions. The jump ball still will be used for basketball. And, like fall sports, there will be no handshake line post-game. If a tournament is held at a soccer complex, every other field has to be used to provide spacing between teams. The revisions were passed by the AIA’s Executive Board after meeting … rest of story at https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/high-school/2020/10/29/aia-board-eliminates-wrestling-invites-modifies-basketball-soccer/6077828002/?mc_cid=69b31ff737&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
2 } – (Virginia) VHSL approved to move forward with plan for return to sports
HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – High school sports are returning to Virginia in December. The Virginia High School League announced Friday it will move forward with the previously adopted “Championships +1” model after “Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed the fourth amended Executive Order 67 which includes changes to Section 12 related to recreational sports.” According to a release from the VHSL, “the amended Executive Order did not change the number of attendees permitted at a sporting event, which cannot exceed the lesser of 50% of the occupancy load or 250 persons. For sports played on a field, attendees are limited to 250 person per field.” High school sports competitions in Virginia have been shut down since March due to COVID-19. Teams are currently permitted to hold offseason workouts. … rest of story at https://www.whsv.com/2020/10/30/vhsl-approved-to-move-forward-with-plan-for-return-to-sports/?mc_cid=69b31ff737&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
3 } – Wrestling, track canceled for winter season
MONTPELIER — The state of Vermont put out its winter sports guidance on Tuesday during the governor’s press conference and while there’s good news for some, there’s horrible news for others. While sports like basketball and outdoor sports like Nordic skiing will happen this winter, two major offerings — wrestling and indoor track — will not be played this year. Mount Anthony wrestling coach Brian Coon said that the coaches came up with a couple of proposals but they weren’t considered. “I want the kids to have basketball and we should have wrestling as well,” Coon said. “We came up with two or three different proposals — only wrestling dual meets, only in-state teams, only wrestling two or three matches in a week, not having any crowds, but the governor’s group didn’t seem [to take that into account].”
Other states are getting ready for or having wrestling events. Pennsylvania, for example, is hosting the sport with many changes for safety. The Super 32 meet, one of the more prestigious events in the national wrestling scene, went down a couple of weeks ago in Myrtle Beach, S.C. “Things are happening all over, down south and out west,” Coon said. … rest of story at https://www.benningtonbanner.com/sports/wrestling-track-canceled-for-winter-season/article_37f69d8e-1e22-11eb-a299-37ac2577ccb4.html?mc_cid=1abb33fe3e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
4 } – (Illinois) Wrestling coaches relish chance to give athletes delayed opportunity
Wednesday’s IHSA Board of Directors special meeting was widely talked about because of the group’s decision on basketball. Specifically, deciding to start it as scheduled on Nov. 16 despite pushback from Gov. J.B. Pritzker and state departments about playing the sport amid the COVID-19 pandemic. But that meeting addressed more than one sport.
Boys’ swimming and diving, competitive cheer, competitive dance, bowling and girls’ gymnastics all will go on as planned, the board determined. Practices can begin Nov. 16, and competition will end Feb. 13.
Then there’s wrestling. “My thought all along, all school year long, was just that it was going to be canceled this season,” Monticello wrestling coach Andy Moore said. “As these (COVID-19) cases grew in Illinois, I really felt they would cancel it for the year,” Champaign Central wrestling leader Merle Ingersoll added.
The IHSA board had a surprise in store for Moore, Ingersoll and others following their train of thought. That being a postponed — not canceled — season for this school year. The board decided to shift the campaign from its planned Nov. 16-Feb. 13 timeline to the IHSA’s one-year summer season of April 19-June 26. This decision fell in line with a September proposal to the IHSA from some of the state’s wrestling coaches and officials. … rest of story at https://www.news-gazette.com/sports/wrestling-coaches-relish-chance-to-give-athletes-delayed-opportunity/article_0cdc36b6-e27a-5e99-9a41-2621a9220e53.html?mc_cid=69b31ff737&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

DES MOINES, Iowa – The high school boys divisions of the Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals wrestled to completion with two athletes—Beau Mantanona (California) and Jett Strickenberger (Colorado)— claiming the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler accolades on Saturday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa.
9th-10th grade recap
Recording six falls and one major decision, Mantanona was the 120 pound champion in the 9th-10th grade division. Representing the CVBJJ, Beau wasn’t the only one from his club to find success. In fact, the CVBJJ, based in California, brought four athletes to the competition and left with four champions in the 9th-10th division, including Brock Mantanona at 100 pounds, Sonny Kling at 195 pounds and Daniel Herrera at 285 pounds. “It’s been tough to train in the middle of the pandemic, but these guys really train hard when there’s a tournament to prepare for,” CVBJJ coach Anthony Mantanona said. “We’ve had this tournament in our sights for a while. The kids were excited and really stepped it up. They all wrestled really tough. 8 } – Wrestling fighting to go maskless as Delaware’s fall sports’ social distancing called a ‘nightmare’
Delaware is one of two states, along with Michigan, that are requiring mask use for most of its high school athletes, but one winter sport is trying to crack that trend. The Delaware Wrestling Coaches Association has submitted a letter to the Division of Public Health and the DIAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee saying that wrestling should be exempted from the rule. DWCA President David Williams, head coach at Newark Charter, told WDEL that current facial coverings would be essentially useless, especially if you’re trying to shorten contact time between wrestlers.
“A facial covering won’t stay on in wrestling. It will continually come off during the match. The referee will have to keep on stopping that match, and that will prolong the match. Even though a match is six minutes, it actually takes about nine minutes. With facial coverings, the matches will take 18-20 minutes more than likely with the amount of times the referee will have to start and restart.” While one mild concern could be a mask snap being a distraction, Williams said the masks could also hurt in another key part of the sport. “You can’t breathe as you wrestling as it is. … rest of story at https://www.wdel.com/news/wrestling-fighting-to-go-maskless-as-delawares-fall-sports-social-distancing-called-a-nightmare/article_92bf5a10-1d84-11eb-b95f-03f8ec0dcd21.html?mc_cid=1abb33fe3e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
9} – (Wisconsin) Senior National wrestling title the latest accomplishment for Olympic hopeful and Elkhorn grad Peak
When the 2017-18 high school wrestling season rolled around, one name from the area was notably absent. Benji Peak had won the WIAA Division 1 state title at 126 pounds in February 2017 as a junior for Elkhorn Area High School. There would be no title defense in 2018, however. Peak had bigger goals in mind. “Once you win state, there’s not really—in high school at least—much else to do,” he said in a recent phone interview. “And I was like, I’m not going to go wrestle college folkstyle, so I’m leaving now.”
Peak moved to Marquette, Michigan, finished his high school credits online, enrolled at Northern Michigan and began Greco-Roman wrestling training there at the United States Olympic Education Center. Three years later, Peak said he has absolutely has no regrets. And his recent accomplishments are solid proof that he has not looked back. Peak won the 2020 Senior Nationals in Iowa last month. He was named the event’s Most Outstanding Wrestler after outscoring his competition 46-0 over five matches in the 67-kilogram bracket. … rest of story at https://www.gazettextra.com/sports/local/senior-national-wrestling-title-the-latest-accomplishment-for-olympic-hopeful-and-elkhorn-grad-peak/article_a29b6275-4d36-5579-bcc1-f5139590bf29.html?mc_cid=1abb33fe3e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Sarah Hildebrandt, a 2018 World silver medalist and a two-time WCWA champion for King, shares thoughts on what she has learned from her younger sister by two and a half years: Trine University head women’s wrestling coach Amy Hildebrandt.
TRY. FAIL. WHO CARES?
“What I’ve learned from Amy is to chase your dreams. Go after them. Who cares what your past is? Who cares what people are saying in the present? I think about my sister and she didn’t wrestle in college and didn’t love wrestling until later on in life and now she is so in love with it and chasing her dream. 3 } – BOOK REVIEW: AFSOON IS A GREAT READ FOR ALL WRESTLERS, OR ANYBODY WHO REALLY WANTS TO BE INSPIRED
I was very hopeful when I heard that there would be a book written about Afsoon Roshanzamir Johnston, the Iranian immigrant who became a pioneer for women’s wrestling in the United States.
To be transparent, I consider Afsoon a friend. I have had a number of opportunities to hear different aspects of her amazing life story, which she shared with me over the years. I was already a staff member at USA Wrestling back in 1989 when Afsoon was in high school and started her international wrestling career. I have known Afsoon ever since, witnessing first-hand her career on the mat, her development as an Olympic coach, and her role as a volunteer leader in USA Wrestling over the last three decades.
The book, aptly named Afsoon, and written by respected wrestling author Craig Sesker, came out earlier this season. King University has been a staple program in women’s wrestling for a decade.
When the program was added in 2010 there were just 12 teams competing that season: 9 NAIA, 3 NCAA. There are 87 programs a decade later and NCAA women’s wrestling has emerging sport status.
Some of the current most dominant freestyle wrestlers have roots in Bristol—think Sarah Hildebrandt, Alli Ragan and Forrest Molinari, to name a few. Not to mention the coaches that have grown there as well. Assistant Coach Julia Salata is a lead voice in women’s wrestling and contributes cross-functionally as a coach, athlete and pioneer with Wrestle Like A Girl. 10 } – Women’s wrestling continues to march forward in 2020
Trackwrestling recently hosted a 30-minute round table discussion with Columbia head coach Zach Tanelli, Princeton head coach Chris Ayres and women’s wrestling advocate Jacque Davis on bringing Division I women’s college wrestling to Ivy League schools.
Although the round table discussion was simply a starting point to create momentum for women’s college wrestling, the conversation offered insight into growing the entire sport. Below are a few takeaways from the call.
You can watch the entire interview here.
Jacque Davis, women’s wrestling advocate
“We’re in an incredible place (for women’s wrestling). We’re at nearly 30,000 girls across the country that are wrestling at the high school level. We have 87 colleges — and growing — that are offering women’s wrestling.
“If we can get them in this space, maybe they’ll know it’s possible.”
Chris Ayres, Princeton head coach
“The benefit of wrestling is the same for women as it is for men. I just want women to have those opportunities. We’ve ignored the other half of humanity. This is good for wrestling, not just men or women. When you add a woman to your program you don’t just add one fan. You add her parents, her grandparents, her aunts, her uncles. “For anyone who will listen, I will tell them the story of what’s going to happen down the road because we kind of know how this story is going to end. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1605239724849&twSessionId=hfguqgcrvd&postId=875923135&mc_cid=b4122c2e60&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – Signing Day 2020 Social Media Rankings
Wednesday, November 11th, marked the beginning of the Fall Signing Period. Even though we are in an unprecedented time where many colleges are operating online and the NCAA has extended a “dead period,” which prevents in-person contact between DI coaches and recruits until January 1st, 2021, there was plenty of action. Notifications of recruits signing with DI and DII schools flooded my Twitter timeline for the rest of the week. There were a variety of ways that schools used to announce their signees, some of which were more creative and flashy than others. Since Wednesday, we have kept track of the best social media efforts and ranked a top-12. Remember this has nothing to do with the quality of the recruits, but the social media presentation itself. YORK – Kobe Lyons is a man of few words. The York senior would rather let his work on the wrestling mat do the talking. That much was clear last Friday afternoon in York High School’s auxiliary gym where his college signing ceremony was held. Lyons, who made it all the way to the Class B 170-pound state championship match but fell just short to earn runner-up last year as a junior, officially signed with Chadron State College. Lyons, who went 50-5 last year, once thought he’d wrestle for North Dakota State, but realized Chadron was the best spot for him. “Chadron just felt like a place where I could grow myself,” he said. “I wouldn’t have to worry so much about everything. It’s more isolated, and I just liked it more.” Lyons won’t be the only former York wrestler at Chadron when he gets there. Harrison Gocke is currently a redshirt freshman for the Eagles. STEUBENVILLE – Ethan Pappas said he had two goals as a kid — win a state championship and wrestle at the Division I level. The Big Red senior made one of those a reality on Monday, signing his letter of intent to wrestle for Edinboro University. “Since I was a little kid, when I first stepped on the mat at four years old, I always wanted to go D-I and win a state title,” Pappas said. “It means everything to me.” Pappas is the reigning 160-pound OVAC champion, has over 100 career wins and was a state placer as a sophomore. He is definitely deserving and Edinboro picked up a great future college wrestler.” He didn’t get the chance to try for the state title last season with the coronavirus pandemic canceling the state tournament, but, like all winter athletes around the area and state, he’s hopeful to get another shot at the fulfilling the rest of his goals this season. … rest of story at https://www.heraldstaronline.com/sports/local-sports/2020/11/pappas-continues-big-reds-storied-wrestling-tradition-goes-division-i-with-edinboro/?mc_cid=97ab69a0c8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

My first coach as I started to get into wrestling was Dave Aceret, a half brother of Andre Metzger. I had him for two years before he got shipped off in the military. He has since passed away.
“My next coach is Joe Edmonson — a gentleman out of Omaha, Nebraska, who coached from a wheelchair. He was amazing. He definitely understood what hard work meant. “After that, it was Keith Massey, who brought technique and love of the sport. He helped me understand the sport so well.

Note: This is the eighth edition of the ‘My Greatest Loss’ series. In the weeks ahead, we’ll interview some of wrestling’s past and present stars to hear their thoughts on the losses that helped shape their careers and put them on a higher trajectory toward greatness. Sean Bormet was a two-time All-American for Michigan, placing third at the NCAA Championships in 1993 and second in 1994. Bormet lost to Oklahoma State’s Pat Smith, 5-3, in the 158-pound finals of the 1994 NCAA tournament when Smith won his fourth NCAA title. Shane Sparks: My Greatest Loss
Before he became a wrestling voice for the Big Ten Network, Trackwrestling and NBC Sports, Shane Sparks was a top-ranked high school senior who was a minute away from becoming a state champion in Wisconsin’s private school division.
Known then as Shane Nebl — his sports talk show co-host later gave him the radio name Shane Sparks — he was a skinny 103-pounder for Winnebago Lutheran Academy who was zeroing in on the school’s first state title. Then everything unraveled. Sparks led 11-6 with roughly 70 seconds left against Thomas More sophomore Rudy Ruiz. He got called twice for stalling on top. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1602030583233&twSessionId=ahiwizbfpg&postId=868401135&mc_cid=aeabd832c4&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
5 } – Tom Ryan: What I learned from Dan Gable
Dan Gable coached the University of Iowa 15 NCAA team championships and 21 straight Big Ten titles from 1977-97. He coached Tom Ryan to All-American honors in 1991 and 1992 (second in 1991 and third in 1992). Ryan is the current head wrestling coach at Ohio State University where he led his team to an NCAA championship in 2015.
The following are Ryan’s words on what he learned from Gable.
CHOOSING THE HARD WAY
We’re talking 28 years after I left the place, it gives you a different perspective. I would say the gifts he has given to me were all the results of his suffering and the challenges he put himself through. Dan Gable is the man he is because he chose the hard way time after time from a physical standpoint and then, of course, what he went through (with his sister being murdered). That ability to suffer so deeply helped him to coach people — me being one of them — to better understand how deeply we can go to obtain something we want. I learned how to suffer at a deeper level. I learned from Coach Gable that words matter. Being positive and truthful and real matter. His actions were far more valuable than his words. I learned from Coach Gable how to run an organization … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1601585172455&twSessionId=ztsdhfowdi&postId=868019135&mc_cid=a2feb99899&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
6 } – Emergence of Folkstyle Wrestling Post World War II
By Bill Welker, EdD
Introduction
During the WWII years, many wrestling programs across the United States were disbanded because their collegiate and scholastic coaches were off to do battle. Upon returning home after the conflict, wrestling mentors reinstated their mat programs. In fact, they also implemented numerous strategies to promote the creation of wrestling in other colleges and local school districts. I would have loved to interview these former wrestling luminaries, but their mat legacies can only be found in old college and high school yearbooks as they have all passed on. Fortunately, I was blessed with the honor of being influenced as a youngster by such former masters of the mats. As a native of Pennsylvania, I will use the Keystone State as a microcosm of how folkstyle wrestling grew throughout the nation following WWII.
Wrestling Icons and Their Works
The Pennsylvania pioneers of post-war development of wrestling included a plethora of college and scholastic wrestling coaches who reintroduced the mat sport throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. … rest of story at https://nwhof.org/blog/emergence-of-folkstyle-wrestling-post-world-war-ii/?mc_cid=a2feb99899&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

DeMeo dedicated his life to the sport of wrestling, impacting athletes at the youth, high school, college and Olympic level. Among the athletes who have competed in the Olympics and were tutored by DeMeo are Shawn Sheldon, Andy Seras, Ike Anderson, Frank Famiano, Chris Catalfo, Dave Schultz, Jeff Blatnick and others. Both Schultz and Blatnick were 1984 Olympic champions, with Schultz winning in freestyle and Blatnick winning in Greco-Roman. He also coached one of the greatest women wrestlers of all time, two-time World champion and nine-time World medalist Kristie Davis, who, like Schultz and Blatnick, are Distinguished Members of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. “He is arguably one of the most consequential figures in U.S. Greco-Roman history. … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/October/02/Joe-DeMeo-obituary?mc_cid=accb7cd38c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
8 } – My Wrestling Journey – Bud Hennebaul
by Nate Naasz September 30, 2020
My life in wrestling probably began when I was one year old. My uncle Fred suffered a freak accident and became a quadriplegic while wrestling in a high school meet. My dad and family chose to embrace wrestling rather than run from it. I am thankful today for their decision to dedicate their lives to wrestling. My dad started an elementary school wrestling team in 1965 at the Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, YMCA. I was there with him at practice many times, yet too young to wrestle. It had to be challenging to keep up with me as I always wanted to get out on the mat and wrestle. He finally gave in when I was five years old. I took some severe beatings back then and loved it all the time. After spending two and three nights a week making the commute from what we called the Back Mountain to the YMCA in Wilkes Barre, I had a transition to make to Junior High at Lake Lehman Junior/Senior High School. I spent many seasons wrestling far more matches than I should have and was suffering from being burned out. I decided not to wrestle in Junior High, but I did not have the courage to tell my dad. Instead of practicing, I would find places to hang out until after practice, when my mom would come to pick me up. I was young and not very bright. While I was doing my alter boy responsibilities a couple of weeks into wrestling, one of my dad’s high school coaches told him it was a shame I decided not to wrestle. That may have been one of the worst days of my life. I will not go into details other than the wrestling room we had in our house became hell on earth that day. Yes, dad had a temper. … rest of story at http://www.nwcaonline.com/my-wrestling-journey-bud-hennebaul/?mc_cid=a2feb99899&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
9} – Friday Feature: Four In A Row
EDMOND – Only one All-American was back from Central Oklahoma’s national championship wrestling team of the season before and he was lost to a knee injury in February. The 34-man roster was dominated by 16 freshmen, with at least four expected to start during the 1986-87 campaign. And still the Bronchos did what was quickly becoming commonplace – capture the NAIA national championship. It was UCO’s fourth straight title and the seventh in nine years. This championship was probably more surprising than the first six, given the many unfamiliar and unproven individuals fifth-year head coach David James had in the practice room when the season started. “This squad realizes that we are a new team with new faces,” James told the Vista in its season preview. “When you have a young group like we do, the guys seem to work harder, they’re more hungry. We know we can’t live in the past.”
The Bronchos were looking for a trio of key transfers – senior Darren Peaster and juniors Jerry Goss and Todd Steidley – along with talented youngsters Brett Beams, Shawn Fleming and Johnny Nimmo to lead a championship charge. And that’s exactly what happened. A rugged dual schedule led to a 2-5 start, though those losses were close setbacks to ranked Division I teams Oklahoma State (26-18), Oklahoma (20-11) and Weber State (23-19) and Division II powers Nebraska-Omaha (20-17) and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (21-17). … rest of story at https://bronchosports.com/news/2020/10/2/wrestling-friday-feature-four-in-a-row.aspx?mc_cid=accb7cd38c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
10 } – Steve Fraser: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Steve Fraser. The 1984 Olympic gold medalist and longtime former USA Wrestling Greco-Roman coach shares his thoughts on his wrestling heroes: Dan Gable and Masaaki Hatta. “Of course, Dan Gable was a hero when I was a youngster. Dan Gable, the Peterson brothers, and Chris Taylor were the first wrestling posters I ever had in my room. I would say those guys as a youngster.
“I can tell you who a wrestling hero was for me is my high school coach Masaaki Hatta, who was second in the world for Japan. He’s a hero because he took me under his wing when I was a 10th grader. He really, really taught me the ropes about wrestling. There have been many great coaches back then and since, but he’s one of my heroes. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1600232107097&twSessionId=zhxbvicxrg&postId=866777135&mc_cid=451344eca7&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
