3 } – Dan Hodge Trophy: History, winners and how it works
The Dan Hodge Trophy honors the top college wrestler every year. It was established in 1995 and is named after the legendary Dan Hodge, who was an NCAA champion, Olympic medalist, multiple-time NWA champion and ambassador for the sport of wrestling. The award was established by longtime wrestling journalist and wrestling hall-of-famer Mike Chapman and presented by his WIN Magazine. The Hodge is equivalent to college football’s Heisman Trophy and has been presented to 27 wrestlers in its 26-year history. Two wrestlers won the award in 2001, the only time in the award’s history that the trophy has been presented to more than one athlete per year.  Here’s a look at the history and selection process for the award, along with a complete list of the winners.
Dan Hodge Award history
The Hodge Trophy has a long history, but there are a few special facts about the trophy:
T.J. Jaworsky, the first winner of the Dan Hodge Trophy, is the only University of North Carolina wrestler to win the Hodge. Jaworsky won his third NCAA title in 1995 and was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the NCAA tournament that same year
Only one athlete has won the Hodge Trophy three times: Cael Sanderson. The Iowa State graduate is also one of just three sophomores to have won the award and one of five juniors. He’s also one of just four wrestlers to have won the award more than once. Of the other athletes who have won the award twice, Sanderson coached two of them: Zain Retherford and David Taylor. Retherford was also one of the five juniors to have won the award, while Taylor was one of the three sophomores to have taken home the Hodge. As the head coach of Penn State, Sanderson has coached a total of five Hodge Trophy winners … rest of story at https://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling/article/2020-06-24/dan-hodge-trophy-history-winners-and-how-it-works?mc_cid=825569db34&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – Checking In with Brayton Lee
By Logan Sass, Communications Assistant
Grateful.  If there was one word to describe Brayton Lee, that would be the one. The Brownsburg, Indiana native has always been mindful of the opportunities that he has been given through the sport of wrestling, but not once has he taken those opportunities for granted when he steps out onto the mat. The once blue-chip recruit turned 149-pound hammer in the Golden Gophers lineup turned in an outstanding 25-6 record during his redshirt freshman campaign, but with the NCAA Championships being cancelled just days before its scheduled start, Lee’s season came to a screeching halt.
Looking ahead to the 2020-2021 season, Brayton Lee is sure to be one of the most notable names in his weight class, as he competes for a national title once again. … rest of story at https://gophersports.com/news/2020/8/11/wrestling-checking-in-with-brayton-lee.aspx?mc_cid=44ca76fc30&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

The other Scott West wrestlers in that conversation are Pat McNamara and Micheal Kroells, who both finished their careers as three-time All-Americans. Fogarty finished his four-year wrestling career at North Dakota State University with a career record of 96-35 (28 career pinfalls), a four-time NCAA Championships qualifier, three-time Big 12 runner-up, and with a 2020 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-America Team Honorable Mention honor. “My time at NDSU I would say was both very fast and very slow  … rest of story at https://www.swnewsmedia.com/jordan_independent/news/sports/jordans-andrew-fogarty-finds-success-on-college-mat/article_6ba9d063-b88a-5b8a-ae6f-daa1f8230c4d.html?mc_cid=2a2de153ce&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

When former Maryland Terrapins wrestler Hudson Taylor visited campus for the first time he knew it was a place he could call home, just a drive down I-95 from where he grew up in New Jersey. Taylor, a three-time prep national champion at Blair Academy and a top 20 recruit in the country, was recruited by several proven Division I programs, but Maryland was unique to his desires. “Maryland was one of the only visits I took where I knew I could both excel as an athlete and an individual,” Taylor said. “I wasn’t just treated like an athlete, but found a community that cared about who I was and what I was about.” The three-time NCAA All-American had one of the best collegiate careers in NCAA wrestling history, finishing with the most wins (165), pins (87), and pins in a single season (24) in Maryland wrestling program history. 10 } – Yagla builds ties between current, former Hawkeyes
PARK VIEW, Iowa — When Chuck Yagla took on a building project earlier this summer, it wasn’t all about bricks and mortar. The two-time NCAA wrestling champion and 1980 Olympian agreed to chair an alumni advisory committee of former Hawkeye wrestlers to not only help lead the Carver Circle facility campaign, but to help build a bridge between the program’s past, present and future. “To a degree, that’s been missing,’’ Yagla said Monday before speaking to participants in the 22nd annual Hawkeye Wrestling Golf Outing at Glynns Creek Golf Course. “Iowa wrestling has produced great people, great leaders for years and part of our task is to strengthen the connection.’’ Yagla said current Iowa coach Tom Brands made that clear when he approached Yagla about chairing the new 12-member advisory group. He said Brands wants to find ways to involve today’s Hawkeyes with those who competed on Iowa teams coached by David McCuskey in the 1950s and Gary Kurdelmeier in the 1970s to those coached more recently by Dan Gable, Jim Zalesky and Brands. “I think Tom senses the value in that now … rest of story at https://qctimes.com/sports/college/wrestling/yagla-builds-ties-between-current-former-hawkeyes/article_1a88d233-b530-5617-b4db-a069c69213fa.html?mc_cid=a357f66b67&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – Brunson TKOs Undefeated Edmen Shahbazyan In UFC Main Card
LAS VEGAS – The hype surrounding a perfect 11-0 start for Edmen Shahbazyan was not enough to impress former UNC Pembroke wrestler Derek Brunson who took down the heavily-favored Armenian-American UFC fighter just 26 seconds into the third period on Saturday evening in Las Vegas. Brunson (21-7 UFC) picked up his 21st career UFC victory with the “upset” and, more importantly, kept himself on the path toward securing his first title fight. Listed No. 8 in the latest UFC middleweight rankings, Brunson has now captured five of his last seven UFC matchups, including a current three-match win streak. Saturday’s victory over Shahbazyan, who has repeatedly been touted as the next middleweight champion by his manager, former UFC fighter Ronda Rousey, marked the 12th knockout of Brunson’s career. He also has three wins by submission and six more by decision. “I’m not given enough respect in this division, but I am ok with earning it,” Brunson said following Saturday’s match. “There have been fights where I’ve had the flu. I went to the doctor to nurse myself back to health, and then had to fight five days later. I was home with the family making sure everything was okay when we had a hurricane in North Carolina. I had to fight 10 days after that but I had not been training for two weeks.” A native of Wilmington, Brunson raked in a trio of all-America honors for the UNCP wrestling team from 2003-07, including a freshman season that watched him tack up 39 victories (T-5th all-time) on the way to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships. … rest of story at https://uncpbraves.com/news/2020/8/2/wrestling-brunson-tkos-undefeated-edmen-shahbazyan-in-ufc-main-card.aspx?mc_cid=a357f66b67&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

1 } – Joe Rau: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Joe Rau. The two-time Greco-Roman World Team member shares his thoughts on his wrestling hero: Wade Schalles.
These are Rau’s words on his wrestling hero:
“I have a lot of wrestling heroes but my number one wrestling hero is Wade Schalles. It’s because he was the most prolific pinner and he wrestled the most styles. He’s in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most pins and the most wins and he’s beaten the most World champs. He’ll wrestle sambo, Greco, freestyle, folkstyle — he doesn’t care.
“One of the coolest things I heard about him was when he was in college he wrestled a great wrestler and, not only did he beat this guy, but before the dual meet he marked an X on the mat where he said he was going to pin him exactly at that point. Sure enough, he put that guy on his back and he dragged him to where he put the X and he pinned him right there and his coach was pissed. His story is legendary and I’ve never heard of anybody that crazy and I wish I would have gotten to watch him wrestle more. There’s one video or two online.

4 } – A Cowboy, a Fireman, and an Assassin: Greco Wrestler Chandler Rogers is One of a Kind
This article is part of our first “long article” request through Patreon! A huge thank you to Alteroc (@crwate01) for this excellent topic suggestion.  In an effort to learn more about combat sports, Alteroc laid out an article format that covers three athletes from a specific sport:

  1. An all-time great
  2. A specialist
  3. Someone “weird”
For our first edition of the Greco-Roman series, we’ll start with #3 – someone “weird”. There’s a saying in American wrestling circles that “wrestling is wrestling”. That is, the differences among the various rule sets are minor, and the truly skilled can translate their skill sets from one style to another. In reality, this adage doesn’t really hold true, thanks to the level of specialization at the highest levels of the sport and differences in what the rules reward or minimize. For Chandler Rogers, though, wrestling is wrestling. As a college wrestler, he was unique for his upper body skills and propensity for big moves; now, wrestling Greco, he stands out for his movement from space and attacks that are more common in freestyle and folkstyle.
  4. College
  5. Chandler Rogers excelled in all styles of wrestling in high school. He won four folkstyle state championships in Washington and Oklahoma, and at the national championships in Fargo he claimed multiple All-American finishes in freestyle and three Greco titles. After graduating in 2014, he joined the Oklahoma State Cowboys, one of the top college programs in the country. Unable to break into the stacked lineup, he redshirted his first year and then served as a backup to two-time All-American Kyle Crutchmer at 174 lbs in 2015-16. He actually beat Crutchmer at the Southern Scuffle, but only got his break after Crutchmer suffered an injury late in the season. Rogers jumped in and performed well, earning a win over the highly-ranked Ethan Ramos of North Carolina and reaching the round of 12 at the national tournament. The next year, with Crutchmer back and three-time NCAA champion Alex Dieringer gone, Rogers went down to 165 and had an even better season, eventually finishing fifth at NCAAs. … rest of story at https://www.thefight-site.com/home/a-cowboy-a-fireman-and-an-assassin-greco-wrestler-chandler-rogers-is-one-of-a-kind?mc_cid=b3b7655607&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – Dan Gable: College wrestling stats, titles, history
“Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.”  These words, written about Gable from an interview and not directly spoken by the wrestling legend, still stand out as a true marker of the mindset of this champion. Gable had his fair share of golds, and, as a three-time conference champion and two-time NCAA champion, he’s one of the best to ever compete in the sport. Gable amassed a college record of 117-1 — losing just once in his career as a senior in the NCAA finals — when he wrestled for the Iowa State Cyclones from 1966-1970. While the loss ruined Gable’s chance of a perfect record, the Iowa native built upon his legacy further as a coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1976-1997. He won 15 NCAA team titles to etch his name in history as one of the greatest coaches of all time. Gable’s coached 45 NCAA champions, 12 Olympians, 152 All-Americans and 106 conference champions. Dan Gable is synonymous with wrestling and his presence hangs over the Hawkeye wrestling room that bears his name. … rest of story at https://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling/article/2020-07-24/dan-gable-college-wrestling-stats-titles-history?mc_cid=84274241b0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – Jaydin Eierman: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Jaydin Eierman. The three-time All-American and 2019 U23 World Team member shares his thoughts on his wrestling hero: Mike Eierman.
These are Jaydin Eierman’s words on his wrestling hero.
“My wrestling hero would have to be my dad, Mike Eierman. He came into my life when I was 6 years old and he really took me in as his own kid from the very start. He and my mom dated for a good 10 years until I was a freshman in high school and then they broke up, but he was still my dad and he really saved my life by teaching me, not just wrestling, but being my dad. He changed my life and I will always be grateful for him. He has always been my hero on and off the mat. The things he could do in wrestling and how far ahead he was thinking, it was all about mental when it came to wrestling. He really helped us out with that big-time … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1596423789349&twSessionId=ykgrwbldfx&postId=788011135&mc_cid=c6e5782be1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – Kenneth Bergstedt, longtime wrestling coach in Roseville, dies of COVID-19 complications at 97
In 2014, Roseville Area High School recognized the contributions of longtime wrestling coach Kenneth Bergstedt by renaming its wrestling facilities after him. Bergstedt started the wrestling program at Roseville’s Alexander Ramsey High School in 1953 — the school’s first year — and taught at the school for 32 years. Bergstedt told reporters in 2014 that his main goal while coaching at the school, which was renamed Roseville Area in 1986 after it merged with Roseville’s Frank B. Kellogg High School, “was to develop young men into gentlemen on and off the mat. That was my main push and it worked out.” Bergstedt, of Maplewood, died from complications of COVID-19 on July 3. He was 97. “Our family was amazed by how many of his former athletes and students stayed in touch with him,” said daughter Sue Figg, who lives in Colorado. “He made so many friends in every chapter of his life. What a difference he made.” In his 22 seasons as Ramsey’s wrestling coach, … rest of story at https://www.startribune.com/kenneth-bergstedt-longtime-wrestling-coach-in-roseville-dies-of-covid-19-complications-at-97/571997112/?mc_cid=a357f66b67&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b&refresh=true

8 } – Ex-Steelers player, champion wrestler Haselrig’s family donating his brain for head injury research
Carlton Haselrig’s family will donate the former Pittsburgh Steelers star and college wrestling champion’s brain to Boston University for brain injury research. Haselrig, who died on July 22 at age 54, played five seasons in the National Football League, four with the Steelers and one with the New York Jets. He was a six-time national champion heavyweight wrestler at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Boston University’s Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center is among the leading brain injury research institutions, with the largest tissue repository in the world, the family said. The Boston University center specializes in chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) – “a common term used to describe the brain of an individual who repeatedly faced head traumas, specifically those, like Carlton, who played aggressively vigorous sports a majority of their life,” the family statement said. “Life starts with family. 9} – Ep. 34 – Wayne Catan on Hemingway, Wrestling, and Grace Under Pressure
Wayne Catan is not only a world class wrestler, but a Hemingway scholar. He lives and breathes Hemingway. And he’s published reviews of 37 books about Hemingway. In wrestling, Wayne was a two-time NCAA finalist for the Syracuse University. After college, he wrestled internationally and even placed third at the legendary Tbilisi Tournament in Georgia.
Now Wayne is an English teacher and the head wrestling coach at Brophy College Prep. Wayne would read Hemingway’s short stories on the bus when they were traveling to away meets for wrestling in college. Even though he rose to the top of the wrestling world, he got a bit of a slow start. He first trained in judo and when he transitioned to wrestling, he never even placed in New York states. But the summer after his senior year of high school, he wound up placing at nationals and getting recruited to wrestle in college. Wayne and I first met in the Blair Academy wrestling room many years ago. In this episode he talks about how he first became friends with Blair coach Jeff Buxton and what it was like working out with Steve Mocco. Back in the day, Wayne and I connected because we always loved talking about books. … rest of story at https://rolliepeterkin.com/wayne-catan-hemingway-wrestling-grace-under-pressure/?mc_cid=490d601747&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

10 } – A Closer Look at Oklahoma State’s 1925 NCAA Wrestling Title
It could be argued that Oklahoma State has more National titles than 34.
We speak at length about the legendary history of Oklahoma State wrestling. Most notably, the Cowboys are able to lay claim to 34 NCAA team titles and 142 individual titles. What’s not often talked about is there was 12 years of OSU wrestling before the NCAA started sanctioning the sport and its national title. With that, there is a real argument to be made that they’ve actually won more than the 34 that everyone talks about.
Oklahoma State wrestling started in 1915 under head coach A.M. Colville. He coached the program in one dual vs. Texas, which they lost. In 1916 he handed the reins over to Ed Gallagher. The rest is history. The actual NCAA tournament didn’t get its start until 1928, and the Cowboys had some very dominant teams leading up to that first tournament. Gallagher won eight conference titles before 1928 and had seven seasons where his teams won each dual they competed in. In that period before the NCAA tournament, the AAU National Wrestling was viewed by many as the national tournament for wrestling and the winners were declared national champions of those years. Gallagher’s Aggies won some of those tournament tournaments and crowned a number of individual champions there, specifically in 1925. In 1925 the Aggies went undefeated … rest of story at https://pistolsfiringblog.com/a-closer-look-at-oklahoma-states-1925-ncaa-wrestling-title/?mc_cid=490d601747&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

North Carolina H.S.A.A. announces amended 2020-2021 athletic calendar

Commissioner Que Tucker Statement on amended 2020-2021 Sport Calendar

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Bottom line – First practice on April 12th and First match on April 26th. Season wraps up in June. Wow! What a change. More details will be realeased from the N.C.H.S.A.A.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“You all have been waiting patiently for a decision from the NCHSAA relative to an amended sport calendar for the 2020-2021 academic year. Please keep in mind that these proposed dates are dependent on COVID-19 conditions improving across NC. However, last night the Board of Directors approved a framework we believe maximizes the opportunities for students in our membership to participate in athletics at some point during this school year, regardless of what plan is a school and/or school system operates.
The NCHSAA Board approved an amended calendar for the 2020-2021 school year in a special called meeting for this purpose on Tuesday, August 11 via Zoom. This calendar represents the hard work of the NCHSAA Staff, Board of Directors and various committees such as the City/County Athletic Directors, Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and the Sports Ad Hoc Committee. There is still much work to be done on the details of implementing athletic programs and contests during this pandemic, but we thank these committees and individuals for their hard work to bring us to this point. We recognize that this is a lot of information to digest and drastically different from the way the sport calendar has been aligned for years in North Carolina.
However, as we mentioned many weeks ago, “We will play again.” In that mantra we believe, and it is in that spirit that we present this calendar. It is the belief of the Board of Directors and our staff that this calendar provides us the greatest chance of providing interscholastic athletic opportunities to the students of the NCHSAA for the 2020-2021 academic year. We believe that this is the best path forward to a safe return to the field. … rest of the story at … https://www.nchsaa.org/news/2020-8-12/nchsaa-announces-amended-2020-2021-athletic-calendar

1 } – Delaware delays start of high school sports season
There will be no high school sports this fall as local schools continue to grapple with difficult decisions prompted by the coronavirus pandemic. The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association’s board of directors voted Thursday to delay the start of athletics and instead condense all the sports seasons later in the year. Under that model, fall sports like football will actually be played in late winter and early spring. “Since interscholastic athletics in Delaware came to a grinding halt in March, the DIAA has been working to return our student athletes and coaches to participating in interscholastic athletics,” DIAA Executive Director Donna Polk said in a prepared statement. “We are thankful to all involved for their shared commitment to get sports back in the educational setting while realizing the significant benefit to the emotional, mental, social and physical well-being for student-athletes. We thank our member schools and community members for their patience to this point.” DIAA will work with school administrators, athletic directors, sport committees and athletic trainers to determine specific season start dates. Under the current plan, which is subject to change based on health conditions, the winter season will begin in December, the fall season will begin in mid-February 2021, and the spring season will begin in mid-April 2021. … rest of story at https://www.newarkpostonline.com/news/delaware-delays-start-of-high-school-sports-season/article_581103cd-4d90-578e-ac1b-8eb9bc778301.html

3 } – Perry graduate Kyle Rowan shaken by Stanford eliminating wrestling
Kyle Rowan remains a member of the Stanford wrestling program. For how long depends on the existence of the Cardinal’s program beyond this coming school year. In a jarring announcement last week, Stanford said it would cut nearly one-third of its Division I sports programs at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year. Among the cuts is wrestling. A recent graduate of Perry, Rowan signed a national letter of intent last November to wrestle at Stanford, a prestigious academic and athletic university just outside Palo Alto, Calif. Now the two-time freestyle All-American and a 2019 state champion is in limbo as to where his wrestling career will be past the 2020-21 season. “I never imagined this happening,” Rowan said. “As of right now, I’m sticking with Stanford for this coming year. From there, I’ll have to decide if I’m going to transfer. Everyone is fighting to get (wrestling) back. If we’re successful, I’m definitely staying at Stanford. If it’s cut for good, most likely I’ll be transferring.”
University president Marc Tessier-Lavigne, Provost Persis Drell and Athletic Director Bernard Muir sent out a letter last week announcing men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, coed and women’s sailing, squash, synchronized swimming and men’s volleyball, would also be eliminated. 4 } – Cutting weight: Upcoming vote may eliminate some weight classes in high school wrestling
Fifteen weight classes has been the standard for high school wrestling in New York state for decades.  That could be changing soon.
Citing decreasing participation and increasing forfeits during dual meet competition, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s central committee is set to decide next week if 15 weight classes is too many.  The proposal, which was passed by the state’s wrestling committee in May by a 7-3 vote (one section representative abstained), would cut the total number of weight classes from 15 to 13. The lowest weight class, currently 99 pounds, would be bumped to 102.  … rest of story at https://auburnpub.com/sports/local/cutting-weight-upcoming-vote-may-eliminate-some-weight-classes-in-high-school-wrestling/article_82509ace-9023-5fa2-91c9-8354b661bbf8.html?mc_cid=fb559ea200&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Heverly, who had been an assistant for the Irish, replaces Matt Walsh, who rebuilt Camden Catholic into a state power the last four years. “It means a lot when you wrestle there growing up and seeing it evolve over time since I’ve been there until now,” said Heverly. “You realize it’s a special place and special program and you’d like to see it doing good things. Hugo Harp has trouble sleeping.
As he lies awake in bed, his mind spins the wheel of misfortune. It usually lands on the stretch of weeks when he was 13 and his wild and twisted childhood was reaching its breaking point. The memories are graphic. Like the time he used a piece of wood with nails protruding from it to attack a 17-year-old who was threatening him. The bloody mess he delivered had Hugo taken away by  police. Or when he led Middletown, Delaware police on a six-hour chase before he got so tired and sat on a stoop waiting to be found. Even on days when he dreaded going into the wrestling room, Jordan Cooper knew his mood would instantly pick up the second he saw Keithen Estrada. “We could be cutting weight and trying to lose seven pounds in one day and Keithen would crack a joke and just automatically make everything seem better,” said Cooper, Estrada’s sophomore teammate at Bakersfield College in 2019. “He was the one kid where you could be having a terrible day, but the moment you saw him, it seemed like everything just went away.” Roughly 24 hours prior to his interview with The Californian, Cooper was sent into an emotional tailspin, one he might normally rely on Estrada to pull him out of.  … rest of story at https://www.bakersfield.com/sports/bvarsity/wrestling-community-mourns-shocking-death-of-former-east-bc-grappler-estrada/article_81a6a194-d8e6-11ea-9e6c-f3e2b78fcf01.html?mc_cid=2938e52dc9&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

National Wrestling News – August # 2

1 } – Q&A ABOUT SENIOR NATIONALS IN CORALVILLE, IOWA, OCTOBER 9-11
With the situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic ever-changing, USA Wrestling is working to provide as many details as possible available as soon as possible. The event has been organized to meet the demand from Senior wrestlers for a competition as soon as it was safe to participate, and USA Wrestling has worked with its local organizing committee in the Iowa City area to provide this opportunity.
Is this only for Senior-age athletes, or are there other divisions? – This event is only for Senior-age athletes, with competition in each Olympic discipline.
Is this a qualifier for Olympic Team Trials? – NO. It is not an Olympic Trials Qualifier. At this time, there have not been any approved changes in the Olympic Trials procedures. Potential changes are now going through the committee and USOPC approval process. Regardless of those decisions, this event will not be included as part of the Olympic Trials process.
Is this a qualifier for a 2020 Senior World Championships? If United World Wrestling (UWW) confirms that a 2020 Senior World Championships will be held in December in Serbia, and if USA Wrestling decides to attend the event, the appropriate Sport Committees will set those qualifying standards. It is quite possible that the event in Iowa City would become the qualifier for a 2020 World Championships. UWW is expected to meet in August to review whether to hold their proposed World Championships events in 2020.
How many weight classes are there, and could that change? At this time, there will be only the six Olympic weight classes in each of the Olympic disciplines. However, if this event becomes a 2020 World Team Trials, there would be 10 World Championships weight classes in each Olympic discipline.
Will it be a best-of-three finals? NO, as a Senior Nationals event, there is a single championship match. If this becomes a World Team Trials, then it would change to a best-of-three series.
Is there prize money? NO, there is no prize money for this event.
Does this change National Team stipend or National Team rankings? NO, this event has no impact on the National Team support or ranking.
Are athletes turning 18 in 2021 eligible? These athletes are not eligible for the Senior Nationals in Coralville. Only athletes who are Senior-eligible in 2020 will be able to participate. … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/July/27/Question-and-answer-about-Senior-Nationals?mc_cid=84274241b0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – Marine wrestlers set to return to the mat
U.S. Senior Nationals to be held Oct. 9-11
It’s been nearly five months since the All-Marine Wrestling Team has trained like they are accustomed to, on the mat, full speed and physically, but in the coming days and weeks they’ll be in return-to-competition mode as they ready for the U.S. Senior Nationals in Coralville, Iowa, Oct. 9-11, following the longest hiatus many in the sport have ever had. “It’s been a roller coaster,” said Staff Sgt. John Stefanowicz, the No. 3 ranked Greco-Roman wrestler in the world at 82 kg. “It’s been a difficult road, but we’ve done really well staying inside the guidelines of the CDC, the Marine Corps and the boundaries that have been put forth. We’ve operated in those limits and have still been able to find other ways to produce.” Before the pandemic, Stefanowicz and his teammates were producing medals. He and Sgt. Raymond Bunker, ranked No. 11 in the world at 72 kg, each won gold medals at the Pan-American Championships, their last competition, which skyrocketed their world rankings. At the 2019 Greco-Roman Nationals, Capt. Daniel Miller won his second national title at 97 kg. 7 } – 2020 Midwest Classic Canceled
I just feel like I was told that Christmas is canceled. Just when I thought my day could not get any worse, I just learned that the largest Division II wrestling tournament outside of nationals has been canceled. There will be no 42nd annual Midwest Classic tournament this season. It was slated to have taken place at the University of Indianapolis in Nicoson Hall December 19th and 20th.  The tournament has traditionally been the toughest on teams schedules outside of the postseason and for good reason. Last season alone, there were 15 teams ranked in our top-25 and it has been a great mid-season gauge on which athletes should be favored to win a national title. 9} – Mark Hall Promoting Equality With Black Wrestling Association
By Gabe Angieri
Mark Hall left Penn State wrestling as a four-time All-American, three-time Big Ten Champion, one-time NCAA Champion, and the owner of a 117-6 record. Now, he is attempting to change the sport forever through his involvement with the Black Wrestling Association (BWA), which he became a confounder of earlier this summer. Hall’s involvement with the BWA started with a conversation. He and Princeton wrestling coach Nate Jackson each shared their visions for college wrestling moving forward. From there, they organized Zoom meetings with 50 of the best Black wrestlers and coaches to figure out how the BWA could promote equality across the sport. Hall said it’s “so special” being a BWA co-founder. He hopes to use his platform as a prominent athlete to promote positive change within the community. “I think being a wrestler and having the accomplishments that I have, I’m coming to realize that I won’t always be competing, … rest of story at https://onwardstate.com/2020/08/04/mark-hall-promoting-equality-with-black-wrestling-association/?mc_cid=490d601747&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

10 } – USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals, named for late Brian Keck, set for Oct. 30-Nov. 1
USA Wrestling has named its popular Preseason Nationals tournament after the late Brian Keck, who helped create the event and served as its event director for more than a decade.

The 2020 USA Wrestling Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals will return to Hyvee Hall inside the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa, October 30 – November 1. Keck worked with USA Wrestling to found the Preseason Nationals in 2008, a major early season national folkstyle wrestling event for athletes of all ages. The first event was held in Des Moines, then spent nine years in Cedar Falls, Iowa, before returning to Des Moines in 2018. During its 12 years with Keck’s involvement, the competition grew in size and prestige. Keck tragically passed away at the age 48 during a trip to Mexico in November, 2019. “Brian Keck provided the vision and passion to establish USA Wrestling’s Preseason Nationals as a premier competition for talented an … rest of story at https://intermatwrestle.com/articles/23799?fbclid=IwAR0DBX6RPha5kz0aRw2T9cTM_nOz8DZZ-QbMpndKLemztne7A1TTsY20gys

NCAA Division II Programs & News – # 3

1 } – Getting II Know a DII Program: McKendree
In just seven years in NCAA Division II, James Kisgen’s McKendree Bearcats have arguably one of the best levels of success the division has seen. Over the past seven seasons, 43 Bearcats have qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships, with 35 of those earning spots on the podium as All-Americans. Two have earned national titles for McKendree: Michael Pixley (184) in 2019 and Darren Wynn (141) in 2016.
“Our goal isn’t to get wins, our goal is to maximize our potential both on the mat and in the classroom,” Kisgen said. “If we can maximize our potential, we can have a good program and build good people.”
The Bearcats, winners of their second-straight NCAA Super Region 4 championship, were poised to make a run at a first Division II team championship in 2019-20. McKendree, ranked #2 as a team, ahead of the cancelled 2020 NCAA Division II National Championships, had eight qualifiers for the event, including three who earned the top seeds at their respective weight classes. Marcus Povlick (125), Nick Foster (165) and Ryan Vasbinder (197) were all voted as the top wrestlers in their brackets heading into the event, with all three winning Super Regional championships two weekends before. … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/college-wrestling-news/getting-ii-know-a-dii-program-mckendree/78497?mc_cid=7e573bd55d&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – NCAA DII APPROVES SEASON-OF-COMPETITION, ELIGIBILITY RELIEF FOR 2020-21
Division II student-athletes will not be charged with the use of a season for the 2020-21 academic year if their team can complete only 50% or less of the sport’s maximum contests/dates of competition because their season is canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In its videoconference meeting Wednesday, the Division II Administrative Committee approved two proactive recommendations for all sports from the Division II Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement.
The first allows schools to self-apply a season-of-competition waiver for student-athletes, provided all of these criteria are met:
The student-athlete’s team participated in no more than 50% of the sport’s maximum contests/dates of competition for the 2020-21 academic year due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19.
– The student-athlete used a season of competition during the 2020-21 academic year.

3 } – Getting II Know a DII Program: Mercyhurst
In 19 years as a program and in NCAA Division II, the Mercyhurst Lakers have put 42 wrestlers on the podium at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, with one of those student-athletes taking national championship honors. Josh Shields took the 165 title in 2009, in Head Coach Mike Wehler’s second year at the helm of the Mercyhurst program. Wehler just closed out his 13th season leading the Lakers, who have placed in the top 10 at the NCAA meet five times in his tenure.
“At Mercyhurst, we try to focus on developing well rounded men who are motivated to be successful in all areas of their life,” Wehler said. “We’ve been able to achieve a high level of success both on the mat and in the classroom.”
Six Lakers qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division II National Championships, with four of those wrestlers earning NWCA All-American status. Three of those 2020 All-Americans, along with 2019 All-American and 2020 National Qualifier Alexis Soriano, return to the Laker lineup for 2020-21. Jacob Robb, the three-seed at heavyweight a season ago, highlights the returning lineup that has experience at every weight. Eric Bartos (133) and Luke McGonigal (197) also earned NWCA All-American honors last season and return for Wehler. … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/college-wrestling-news/getting-ii-know-a-dii-program-mercyhurst/78518?mc_cid=b08de964d0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – Getting II Know a DII Program: Queens
In three years as an NCAA Division II program, Queens has sent three to the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships. As another young DII program wrestling in the South, the Royals are currently under the direction of second-year Head Coach Rob Tate. “We just focus on trying to get a little bit better at something everyday to just be a better version of ourselves than we were the previous day,” Tate said. “We’re still one of the new kids on the block, but I’m impressed with the way our guys are buying in, trying to compete, and I’m super proud of the results they’re starting to get for it.” Last season, the Royals sent two to the 2020 NCAA Division II National Championships, in Melvin Rubio (125) and Noah Curreri (184). It was Rubio’s second trip, with the rising senior accounting for two of the three NCAA qualifications in program history. Both Rubio and Curreri are back for Tate in 2020-21, along with five other starters. After the addition of incomers from North Carolina and Colorado, the Queens Royals will look to number around 25 for next season. … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/college-wrestling-news/getting-ii-know-a-dii-program-queens/78551?mc_cid=90928adc9b&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – Getting II Know a DII Program: Wheeling
The Wheeling Cardinals will experience a rebirth of sorts in 2020-21, after the program taking a hiatus for the 2019-20 season. Prior to that hiatus, the Cardinals had an absolute breakthrough year in 2018-19, taking second at the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championships behind a pair of National Champions and six total All-Americans. August Wesley has been tabbed with the resurgence of Wheeling wrestling, which will compete in Super Region 3 again for the 2020-21 season.
“Here at Wheeling University our coaches, team mentors and athletic department are dedicated to challenging these men to be competitive and achieving their goals on the mat, all while staying focused on pursuing their degree so they will be successful in life,” Wesley said.
The two 2019 National Champions, Tyler Warner (133) and Conner Craig (174), will be just up the hill from Wheeling at West Liberty, with Terrance Fanning (285) taking the only other National title in program history in 2018. The Cardinal program was established in 2013, and has sent 21 wrestlers to the D2 meet in six seasons of competition. Ten of those came back to Wheeling, W.V., as All-Americans, including the three national titles from Warner, Craig and Fanning.  The Cardinals will look to field a roster of just more than 40 in their return to the mat for Wheeling.  … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/college-wrestling-news/getting-ii-know-a-dii-program-wheeling/78586?mc_cid=b3b7655607&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – Getting II Know a DII Program: Ouachita Baptist
The Ouachita Baptist wrestling program just closed out its ninth season as an NCAA Division II program. During those years, the Tigers have sent 20 to the NCAA Division II National Championships, with 16 of those National Qualifiers coming home as All-Americans. Kevin Crutchmer just closed out his third season as the third head coach in program history.
“When I took over the Ouachita Baptist University Wrestling program 3 years ago I knew of the rich tradition and the alumni and coaches that put the program on the map of NCAA Division II wrestling,” Crutchmer said. “I was very excited to add my processes to try to continue the successes. It’s been a challenge at times and it’s been a blessing also based on the type of kids we have in our program and the administration of the institution’s support to see the program continue to grow. We try in many facets to teach not only wrestling but growth outside the wrestling room. Our philosophy at OBU is to get kids in our program that have a goal to succeed at every aspect of life! We encourage mental strength, commitment and hard work creates opportunities. We want the opportunity to try to have decisive moments to help us mature as teammates and extensions of the OBU family.”  The 16 Tiger All-Americans are highlighted by current Lindenwood assistant coach Dallas Smith’s four All-American honors, including two trips to the National Championship match at 184. Look to Next Season # 7

1 } – #KEEPSTANFORDWRESTLING DEVELOPS POSITIVE SOLUTIONS TO REVERSE DECISION TO DROP SPORT AFTER 2020-21 SEASON
One of the toughest days for the U.S. wrestling community since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic was an announcement from Stanford University on July 8 that it will drop 11 varsity athletics programs after 2020-21 season. Almost a month later, the same question is still being asked again and again. Why wrestling?
The Cardinal wrestling team has been a rising program in recent years under head coach Jason Borrelli, winning its first-ever Pac-12 conference tournament title in 2019 and fielding a strong, young team that was expected to do some serious damage on the national scene over the next few years. This past season Stanford had three All-Americans; all underclassmen, two of them freshmen. The California Regional Training Center, affiliated with the program, recently added two-time Olympian and 2008 Olympic coach Kerry McCoy to lead the effort. The wrestling program, which has been on campus for 104 years, has established a new level of success with the current group of athletes, coaches and supporters. Borrelli’s tweet on July 8 set the tone for the effort that has moved forward to save the Stanford program. It said:
Nothing like a little adversity and a good challenge. First we will listen to understand why. Then we will strategize and prepare for the battle! Lastly, we will execute and make this right. Let’s go @CardWrestling fans… who’s with us? … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/August/03/Keep-Stanford-Wrestling-seeks-positive-solutions-to-save-program?mc_cid=a357f66b67&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – NCAA’S NEXT RETURN-TO-SPORT GUIDELINES: TESTING WITHIN 72 HOURS OF COMPETITION FOR HIGH CONTACT RISK SPORTS
The NCAA Sport Science Institute has released the Resocialization of Collegiate Sport: Developing Standards for Practice and Competition to extend previous guidance and provide updated recommendations about the protection of athletes and prevention of community spread of COVID-19. The guidelines are designed to inform schools in responding appropriately based on their specific circumstances and in the best interest of returning college athletes’ health and well-being. Many sports require close, personal contact and require specially crafted guidelines. Among the recommendations put forth:
– Daily self-health checks.
– The appropriate use of face coverings and social distancing during training, competition and outside of athletics.
– Testing strategies for all athletics activities, including pre-season, regular season and post-season.
– Testing and results within 72 hours of competition in high contact risk sports.
– Member schools must adhere to public health standards set by their local communities. “Any recommendation on a pathway toward a safe return to sport will depend on the national trajectory of COVID-19 spread,” said Brian Hainline, NCAA chief medical officer. “The idea of sport resocialization is predicated on a scenario of reduced or flattened infection rates.” “When we made the extremely difficult decision … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/July/16/Newest-NCAA-COVID-19-guidelines-released?mc_cid=78726f35ba&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

As always, we are looking to meet the needs of our students and community while also providing additional opportunities to prospective student-athletes,” said Stiles. “Like many of our sports, particularly the ones we’ve added in the past 5-6 years, these offerings will allow us to recruit and retain new students while expanding our geographic recruiting footprint. … rest of story at https://auwolves.com/news/2020/8/3/general-alvernia-announces-the-addition-of-three-varsity-sports.aspx?mc_cid=a357f66b67&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – USA WRESTLING PRESEASON NATIONALS, NAMED FOR THE LATE BRIAN KECK, SET FOR OCTOBER 30-NOVEMBER 1 IN DES MOINES, IOWA
“Brian Keck provided the vision and passion to establish USA Wrestling’s Preseason Nationals as a premier competition for talented and motivated wrestlers from across the nation. It is appropriate that as this tournament continues to grow and improve, his contribution to the sport is recognized on an annual basis,” … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/August/05/Preseason-Nationals-named-for-Brian-Keck-and-event-dates-set?mc_cid=dabfe2c4a0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – WIAA MODIFIES WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING, STARTING SEASON IN LATE DECEMBER OR IN JANUARY
RENTON, Wash. – The WIAA Executive Board took action on Tuesday to modify the 2020-21 WIAA sports season calendar in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The changes will create four WIAA-sanctioned seasons and will also move moderate- and high-risk team sports, originally scheduled for the fall season, to the WIAA Season 3.
The fall sports of cross country, slowpitch softball, as well as alternative seasons for golf and tennis, have been determined to consist of WIAA Season 1 and will each begin practices the week of September 7, a date determined by the Executive Board at a previous meeting. The viability of girls’ swim and dive taking place in WIAA Season 1 is dependent on more information from the Department of Health.
The remaining fall sports of girls’ soccer, 1B/2B boys soccer, volleyball and football will now be scheduled to begin in the early spring of 2021 as part of WIAA Season 3.
The Board recognizes that participation in any fall sports will depend on county progression through the phases laid out in Governor Inslee’s Safe Start plan over the coming weeks. The Executive Board will create benchmarks on July 28 to be met in order for WIAA Season 1 to take place. If the benchmarks are not met, the Board will plan to move the remainder of fall sports to WIAA Season 3.
Traditional winter sports will all take place in WIAA Season 2 with the expectation to begin in late December or early January. Traditional spring sports will occupy WIAA Season 4 to end the school year.
The supporting document below provides tentative dates of when seasons could potentially start and end, but a final decision has not been determined by the Board.
Editor’s Note: In the modified schedule posted by the WIAA, the current plan is to hold the Washington state high school wrestling championships during the week of March 1-7. Also, wrestling will have pre-practice for one week, with competition beginning at the end of the second week.
“Since March, the philosophy of our Association has been to allow students every chance to participate,” said WIAA Executive Director Mick Hoffman. “We’ve asked our Executive Board and planning committees to be as creative … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/July/22/WIAA-in-Washington-to-delay-start-of-high-school-wrestling?mc_cid=b08de964d0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

8 } – CHSAA MOVES COLORADO HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING SEASON TO JANUARY THROUGH MARCH
AURORA — The Colorado High School Activities Association has announced its 2020-2021 interscholastic athletics and activities calendar, following months of collaboration with Gov. Jared Polis, the CHSAA Resocialization Task Force, the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, the state’s COVID-19 Response team, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and the CHSAA Board of Directors and administrative staff. “The health and safety of our student participants, coaches, officials and essential personnel, including volunteers is a primary concern for the return of interscholastic athletics and activities,” said CHSAA Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green. “We are very grateful for the state, health and educational leaders for their shared commitment of a return to these highly beneficial education programs when it is deemed safe for all school communities.” Note that the resumption of all activities and athletics are subject to change based upon any changes to national, state or local guidelines. … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/August/05/CHSAA-moves-Colorado-high-school-season-to-January-through-March?mc_cid=dabfe2c4a0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – OSAA SHIFTS OREGON HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING SEASON FROM LATE DECEMBER THROUGH EARLY MARCH
All sports will have a seven-week regular season followed by a ‘culminating week’
Adapting to restrictions from COVID-19, the OSAA has set a new course for 2020-21 school activities. Taking a cue from Nevada’s association, the OSAA announced Wednesday that it has opted to schedule truncated winter, fall and spring seasons – in that order – with contests starting in the new calendar year and running through late June. That means the basketball season will go from Jan. 11 to March 7 and the football season will run from March 15 through May 9, all predicated on COVID-19 guidance from the Governor’s Office and Oregon Health Authority.
“The goal was to try to maximize opportunities for students, providing three distinct seasons for schools later in the year,” OSAA executive director Peter Weber said.
Two weeks ago, the OSAA pushed back the first contest date of the fall season to Sept. 23, keeping the first date of fall practice at Aug. 17. But due to state restrictions for COVID-19, the vast majority of Oregon school districts have committed to starting the year with online learning, casting doubts on fall sports and activities. … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/August/06/OSAA-shifts-Oregon-HS-wrestling-season-to-late-December-through-early-March?mc_cid=d480353b0e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

10 } – No football until February: Virginia committee votes to delay high school sports
There won’t be any high school sports in Virginia until at least mid-December, and the traditional fall sports season — including football, cheerleading and volleyball — will be delayed until at least February 2021. That’s according to a plan approved Monday by the Virginia High School League’s executive committee, which makes rules for public high school sports in the commonwealth. The plan calls for a delayed and condensed series of athletic seasons, but would keep all sports in the season where they are currently aligned.
The decision comes as many Virginia school districts have announced plans to start the upcoming school year with virtual learning options to continue slowing the spread of the coronavirus. Wrestling History # 12

1 } – Raymond Bunker: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Raymond Bunker. The 2019 Greco-Roman World Team member shares his thoughts on his wrestling hero: Jordan Burroughs.
These are Bunker’s words on his wrestling hero:
“My wrestling hero is Jordan Burroughs. When I was in high school I wasn’t the best wrestler and my senior year I watched him compete in the London Games and I saw that he had a really good double-leg and I didn’t really know much about wrestling at the time, so that’s something I developed was trying to be like him on the mat and do my double-leg. My senior season I set the school record for the most takedowns in the history of the school at 162, the majority of them were double-legs.  “I watched a video of how Jordan Burroughs eats ice cream after his workouts, so I started eating ice cream every day. I wanted to be like him. Now we fast forward years later and I still see him as a great role model in the wrestling community, … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1595355557154&twSessionId=qyatlyyvbu&postId=786701135&mc_cid=aa0bad43f6&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – Chris Campbell: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Chris Campbell. The three-time World and Olympic medalist and 1981 World champion shares his thoughts on his wrestling heroes, including Lee Kemp, John Smith, Bruce Baumgartner, Kenny Monday and Dan Gable.
These are Campbell’s words on his wrestling heroes: “Lee Kemp, John Smith, Bruce Baumgartner, Kenny Monday, obviously Dan Gable, Wayne Wells, and Fred Fozzard are my heroes.
“Kenny Monday was the ultimate warrior. At the 1992 Olympic Games when he got second, two or three days before the Games started he totally dislocated his elbow. I watched his arm bend back the other way. He basically wrestled with one arm. Had he not had that injury he’d have won the Olympics and he would have been a two-time Olympic gold medalist. He’s just a tough son of a bitch.
“Bruce Baumgartner was the most athletic big man that I’ve ever seen. He was really quick. I wrestled with him and he was really, really quick. I always think Bruce underachieved because nobody should ever beat him. He should have won everything. That’s easy for me to say. I’m impressed with Bruce on that. “John Smith was one of the most beautiful wrestlers that I’ve watched … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1595300787906&twSessionId=zdkrsabhth&postId=785598135&mc_cid=7e573bd55d&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – Lou Rosselli: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Lou Rosselli. The Oklahoma coach and 1996 Olympian his thoughts on his wrestling heroes, including his high school coach, Dick Lange.
These are Rosselli’s words on his wrestling heroes:
“The hard part is I don’t have a lot of wrestling heroes. I’m just a fan of wrestling in general. I respect all these guys that have done so well. I just have respect for all of them from (Jordan) Burroughs to (Cael) Sanderson to all those elite guys. There’s always someone to look to. It’s a collective view of all them — before my time and after my time. When you’re around international wrestling, you know how hard it is if you’ve done it. I was lucky enough to coach those teams and I know what they go through. Overall, I’d say it’s the respect for the people who have done so well and how hard it is to do and watching the elite guys be the best.  “My dad worked in a factory and I was from a small town in Buffalo, New York, so there was no real guy at the time who was the reason why. When it comes to being an elite athlete my high school coach, Dick Lange, put in a lot of man-hours and taught me how to work with people and relationships.  … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1595300787906&twSessionId=zdkrsabhth&postId=785575135&mc_cid=7e573bd55d&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – Ryan Mango: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Ryan Mango. The 2019 Greco-Roman World Team member shares his thoughts on his wrestling heroes: Spenser Mango and Dremiel Byers.
These are Mango’s words on his wrestling heroes:
“(My wrestling hero is) two people with one being my brother, (Spenser), and the other being Dremiel Byers. I’ll say my brother because of firsthand experience and some of the obstacles he has had to overcome in his wrestling career and in our lives and his ability to be a humble leader is something I try to emulate in my wrestling as well as who I am as a person.  “Dremiel Byers because of his dedication to wrestling, … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1595532794205&twSessionId=hinqmznnhc&postId=787102135&mc_cid=fb559ea200&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – What we’ve learned from the Trackwrestling quarantine interviews so far
Trackwrestling has conducted interviews with more than 100 wrestlers, coaches, and administrators since the NCAA Championships were canceled in March. Here are a few highlights (with the full interviews linked below):  Jordan Burroughs and Greg Jones are two kids in a candy store
Trackwrestling publishes a daily feature called ‘My Wrestling Hero.’ It features prominent wrestling figures to articulate who influenced them during their wrestling journeys. The answers range from parents to high school coaches to high-profile athletes.  Five-time World and Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs said Greg Jones — a three-time NCAA champion for West Virginia — was his wrestling hero. Trackwrestling content manager Andy Hamilton interviewed both simultaneously and the banter back and forth was pure gold.
Chris Campbell’s career defies logic
Chris Campbell — an NCAA champion for Iowa in 1976-77 — missed out on his best year of international wrestling when the United States boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Campbell was the prohibitive favorite to win a gold medal at the Olympics — and he proved it by winning the 1981 World Championships (he was named most technical wrestler in the world that year).  Injuries and timing prevented Campbell from making the 1984 team, so he became an attorney instead. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1595532794205&twSessionId=hinqmznnhc&postId=786916135&mc_cid=fb559ea200&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – OSU Wrestling: The Top 10 Wrestlers of the John Smith Era
A look at the top 10 wrestlers of the John Smith coaching era.
Lately I’ve had some time to brainstorm for some wrestling content, in the absence of wrestling. I’m starting it out with this list of the top 10 wrestlers of the John Smith era and am actually going to dive even deeper and take a look at Ed Gallagher, Myron Roderick, Tommy Chesbro, and Joe Seay and make similar lists for them.
Let’s kick it off here with the current coach and wrestlers that we’ll all probably be most familiar with.
1. Pat Smith
Pat Smith is the younger brother of John and in 1994 became NCAA wrestling’s first four-time NCAA champion. To some that would almost make him a lock for No. 1, but I actually struggled a bit with whether or not to even include him on the list as he started his career at OSU before John was hired. Ultimately, if you consider him a part of the John Smith coaching era, it’s tough to argue he doesn’t deserve the top spot.
2. Alex Dieringer
Dieringer is one of three three-time NCAA champions on this list and one of two Hodge trophy winners. As the only one who can claim both of those accolades, he grabs the second slot. Most people reading this will know Dieringer better than anyone else on this list as he’s still an active competitor on the senior level. His time at OSU was about as dominant as it gets. He nearly made the NCAA finals as a freshman and just absolutely wrecked people from his sophomore to senior year. His wide array of offense attacks along with his speed and power made him nearly unstoppable on his feet during his time in the orange singlet.
3. Mark Branch
Branch was somewhat interesting to rank here. He only had two titles compared to Guerrero and Rosholt, who both had three.  … rest of story at https://pistolsfiringblog.com/osu-wrestling-the-top-10-wrestlers-of-the-john-smith-era/?mc_cid=fb559ea200&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – Quentin Wright: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Quentin Wright. The two-time NCAA champion, three-time finalist and four-time All-American shares his thoughts on his wrestling hero: Neil Turner.
These are Wright’s words on his wrestling hero:
“I’m going to go with Neil Turner. He was one of the founders of Mat Town USA Wrestling Club in Lock Haven. The reason is because of the impact he had through his coaching style. It was what he said during practice. One of his quotes was ‘I shoot, I score. He shoots, I score.’ He also had the quote, ‘I don’t want to interrupt while you’re talking.’
“I went to that wrestling club when I was in high school. He had such a positive impact on the direction of where I went to college and in life. He also said, ‘You never really lose. You just run out of time.’ You take that positive message and it’s not over — you just ran out of time and I’m going to do better next time.  “He was inducted into the EWL Hall of Fame. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1595625751298&twSessionId=mvokaovpnx&postId=787198135&mc_cid=a3e4678353&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

8 } – Jay Weiss: My Wrestling Hero
Today’s installment of My Wrestling Hero features Jay Weiss. The Harvard coach shares his thoughts on his wrestling heroes, including Granite Taropin.
These are Weiss’ words on his wrestling heroes:
“I’ve been fortunate to have a coaching staff that I’ve learned so much from. A big one is Granite Taropin, who coached the Beloglazov (twins) in the Soviet Union. He came one of my first couple years at Harvard and he was one of my assistants for a long time. A lot of my coaching has come from him as far as training the individual and how to train the team. I learn so much from him.
“You can go down the line —Kendall Cross, who I just picked his brain, physically and mentally. Jared Frayer. Jamill Kelly. Bryan Snyder. Everyone one of these guys have had such a big impact on me in my coaching. Every time someone new comes in I’ve adapted and learned. Things are different now than they were 25 years ago as far as … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1595905848263&twSessionId=ofehofbokx&postId=787304135&mc_cid=84274241b0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – .#153 Barry Davis – Dan Gable Disciple, 3x NCAA Champ
ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Barry Davis is a 3x NCAA champ for the great Dan Gable and the Iowa Hawkeyes. In 1984, Barry was the Olympic Silver Medalist. He’d then go on to coach at Iowa, as well as lead the Wisconsin Badgers for a number of years. He’s an icon. A legend. A great storyteller. 10 } – Former OSU Wrestler and NCAA Champion Fred Davis has Passed Away
The former Cowboy and long time BYU head coach has died at 86.
According to the Tulsa World, former Cowboy wrestler, three-time All-American, and NCAA champion Fred Davis passed away on Friday at the age of 86.
Davis, who is pictured above showing technique with former Cowboy head coach and teammate of Davis Myron Roderick, was a three-time All-American for the Cowboys from 1954-56 under Art Griffith. He won a national title in 1955 and helped lead the Cowboys to team national titles in all three of his seasons as a Cowboy.
