2 } – High school wrestling in New Jersey adapting to rising girls participation
The National Federation of State High School Associations wants wrestling to become more gender-neutral as participation by girls continues to grow. The NFHS wrestling committee announced significant rule changes Tuesday for the 2020-21 wrestling season, including modifications to hair length restrictions and weigh-in protocol.
In a statement from the organization, the revision was “linked to the committee’s focus on inclusion” of boys and girls. “I think that’s amazing,” said Mainland Regional junior Amirah Giorgianni, who was a first-team Press All-Star this past winter after she placed second at the state tournament in March.
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, which governs most high school sports in the state, allowed girls wrestling for the first time in the 2018-19 season. It grew in popularity this past winter. “Girls and boys both deserve the same,” said Giorgianni, 16, of Somers Point. “Girls should get as much credit as boys, and it’s great that people are seeing that and . …. rest of story at https://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/sports/high-school-wrestling-in-new-jersey-adapting-to-rising-girls-participation/article_16e10413-c568-5636-b038-525870568f73.html?mc_cid=3a87a899d8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – Clarissa Chun: My Wrestling Hero
The 13th installment of My Wrestling Hero features 2008 World champion and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun, who shares her thoughts on her wrestling hero — four-time World champion Tricia Saunders.
These are Chun’s thoughts on her wrestling hero:
“She was one I had to compete against, but she paved that way and inspired me that my goals were possible because of women like her out there. She was a strong advocate for women’s wrestling in the United States when people were kind of turning their heads to women’s wrestling. She was that strong woman with a voice and not turning down any opportunities. She pushed forward opportunities for women. I believe she helped fight for women to get a stipend, even though it wasn’t an Olympic sport. She helped get support for women’s wrestling within USA Wrestling. … rest of story at … https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1588803032387&twSessionId=ksgfepqucq&postId=780477135&mc_cid=6299171a9e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Now, it’s up to the Board of Directors to give the stamp of approval. They will host a meeting through Zoom in June to announce their decision. Sanctioning would allow girls to compete in an official state championship tournament. It also allocates money for equipment, coaches and transportation. Perhaps the strongest local advocate is Mike Crowder, head wrestling coach at Lincoln High School. … rest of story at … https://www.tallahassee.com/story/sports/2020/05/06/girls-wrestling-awaits-approval-fhsaa-board-directors/3062297001/?mc_cid=6299171a9e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
