KEVIN’S COMMENTARY — MONTORIE BRIDGES
To my way of thinking, there isn’t much wrong with Montorie Bridges. Wyoming’s 133-pound wrestling All-American is a two-time NCAA qualifier and will finish his career—which has a season-and-a-half remaining–among Cowboy leaders in wins.  He excels in the classroom, and is a member of the UW’s student-athlete leadership team. What’s not to like?Well, there is one thing. He’s a Boson Red Sox fan. At least he loves the game of baseball, so he’s alright in my book despite his misguided affiliation. In fact this past summer he had an opportunity to see his beloved team play the Indians in Fenway Park.  He sat  next to the Pesky Pole in right field.  “What an experience,” he says, “it was unbelievable.  I’ve got to get back there.” Bridges is off to another sensational start for Mark Branch‘s Cowboy wrestling program.  He leads the team in wins with 15, and he’s already won the Reno Tournament of Champions, … Rest of the story at https://gowyo.com/news/2019/12/19/general-kevins-commentary-montorie-bridges.aspx?mc_cid=2cc69f4cfd&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Freshman Ridge Lovett brings ‘that extra element’ to No. 2 ranked Nebraska
Nebraska coach Mark Manning met with Ridge Lovett in September about the possibility of him redshirting this season. After all, Lovett turned 19 in August and was still getting acclimated to college wrestling. “Juggling the challenges of wrestling in the best conference in the country and being a student in a big-time conference is quite a load,” said Manning, whose team has its last nonconference dual when it hosts Oregon State at 6 p.m. Friday at the Devaney Center. The Huskers had senior Zak Hensley at 133 pounds for their first three duals this season, but Manning pulled the redshirt off Lovett against Northern Iowa on Nov. 24. Lovett lost that match, but had a breakout performance two weekends later at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas. He went 5-1 and finished third in his weight class. His only loss came to Montorie Bridges of Wyoming, ranked seventh at 133 by InterMat. And Lovett debuted at No. 10 in the rankings the next week. Bearcats win seven of 10 bouts en route to the win

“We came away with a win, which was great, but we need to find a way to get more points on the board,” said head coach Kyle Borshoff. “I’m expecting more from our guys – more major decisions, tech. falls and pins. We’re going to need to score more in order to keep up with the likes of Lehigh and Virginia Tech. I’m happy with the win, but we have work to do.” Rest of the story at https://bubearcats.com/news/2019/12/20/wrestling-downs-scared-heart-25-9.aspx?mc_cid=f9cca19b1a&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

PARKERSBURG, W. Va. — The Ohio wrestling team (2-3, 0-1 MAC) earned a 20-13 victory over regional rival West Virginia (0-5, 0-1 Big 12) this evening at Parkersburg High School. “We’ve been trying so hard to get a win, and I think our guys feel the pressure. I know I feel the pressure,” said 23rd-year head coach Joel Greenlee. “Hopefully, that takes a little bit of that, and we just wrestle hard and have fun the rest of the year.” West Virginia opened things up with a 3-0 lead at 125 pounds as redshirt sophomore Joey Thomas picked up a 4-2 win by decision. George Mason Patriots Split MAC Road Matches
The Patriots move to 6-2 (2-1 MAC) this season after splitting two MAC duals today. Mason edged Edinboro, 21-19 in a Noon match today, then dropped a 22-14 match at Cleveland State later this evening. Edinboro won the first match at 125 pounds to take a 3-0 lead, but Mason would win the next four matches and take a commanding 18-3 lead halfway through the match. The Fighting Scots fought back with decisions in four of the final five matches.  In a pivotal match at 174, graduate student Tony Lombardo edged Jacob Oliver, the second-ranked wrestler in the MAC in that weight class, 7-5. Gophers Takedown Jackrabbits 22 – 10
BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Minnesota wrestling program defeated the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 22-10 in a Friday evening dual that saw the Gophers win seven-of-ten on the road across the border.  At 125-pounds Patrick McKee got the Gophers started as he battled hard in his bout against Danny Vega. After surrendering the initial takedown McKee got a key reversal and proceeded to rack up over two minutes in riding time. McKee would add another reversal, and the riding time point, en route a 6-4 decision. After getting a takedown only 28 seconds into the bout, 141-pound Mitch McKee worked towards a 6-1 decision with 4:29 in riding time. McKee dominated in the top position with his massive amount of riding time plus two stall calls and a rideout of the entire second period.  In the evening’s most anticipated bout, No.5 Brayton Lee earned a 4-3 victory over No.15 Henry Pohlmeyer. The first period proved crucial as both men secured takedowns, but only Lee earned the one-point escape. Still, the two would’ve remained tied at three if it weren’t for Lee’s riding time advantage of over two minutes. So, Lee earned the 4-3 decision victory.  Rest of the story at https://gophersports.com/news/2019/12/20/wrestling-gophers-takedown-jackrabbits-20-12.aspx?mc_cid=f9cca19b1a&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Davis & Elkins cruised to a 40-9 win over the Tennessee-based Tornado in the first match of the day. MATCH RECAP
The Cleveland State University wrestling team came from behind for a second straight dual as the Vikings fought back to claim a 22-14 victory over George Mason Friday evening in Woodling Gymnasium. Facing a Patriot squad that entered with a 6-1 mark, the Vikings found themselves trailing, 14-10, with three bouts remaining. However, CSU ended with a flourish as the Vikings shut out Mason down the stretch to pick up the win in the program’s first-ever home MAC dual. True freshman Logan Heil got CSU off on the right foot with a dominating 18-5 victory at 125 pounds. He used six takedowns, two near-fall points, two stalling points, an escape and a riding time point to rack up points in bunches. George Mason never led in regulation at 133 pounds, but the Patriots used late scoring to send the match to sudden victory. Mason would get the winning takedown in the extra session to get on the team scoreboard. Boilers Notch 35-9 Road Win at SIUE
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Purdue wrestling team finished off the first semester in solid fashion, taking eight-of-10 road matches in a 35-9 dual victory at Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Thursday. The Boilermakers posted bonus points in five of their eight wins, including three falls, and freshman Thomas Penola knocked off a ranked opponent at heavyweight as Purdue improved to 7-1 on the season.
The Boilermakers raced out to a 12-0 lead behind falls from junior Devin Schroder and freshman Travis Ford-Melton at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Schroder quickly built an 8-0 lead at 125 with a takedown and six quick nearfall points before sticking his opponent in a tilt. Ford-Melton wasted zero time in the ensuing match, quickly launching his foe to his back and getting the fall in 12 seconds, marking Purdue’s fastest since a 13 second fall at the 2019 Loras Open.
Sophomore Parker Filius stretched the lead to 15-0 with a 7-1 decision before a wild match at 149 where junior Griffin Parriott came from behind to earn a 12-10 victory in a tie-breaker overtime. Trailing 4-0 out of the gate after a throw from SIUE’s Tyshawn Williams, Parriott started chipping away with a reversal in the first, and then a 5-2 scoring advantage in the second period to make it 7-7. Williams got an escape in the third, and Parriott evened the count at the end of regulation with a riding-time point, heading to the extra sessions at 8-8. Neither wrestler scored in the sudden-victory frame, but that’s when things got crazy. Central Catholic wrestling coaches were disciplined after allowing a male wrestler to compete against a female in a dual meet last week against Allen, according to Matt Kerr, spokesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allentown. Black Hired to Lead Women’s Wrestling Program
Oskaloosa–William Penn Athletics Director Nik Rule is proud to announce the hiring of Tucker Black as the University’s first-ever Head Women’s Wrestling Coach.
Black, a May 2019 graduate of Upper Iowa University with a degree in Agricultural Business, was a two-year starter and team captain for the Peacocks.  A strong scholar-athlete, he graduated Magna Cum Laude and was twice named an Academic All-American. “We are really excited to have Coach Black as our first women’s wrestling coach,” Rule said.  “Through the interview process he showed an authenticity that was very refreshing and something we believe student-athletes looking to compete in the sport will be attracted to. His energy and commitment to the sport is contagious, while he also has a big picture perspective on the most valuable components of the student-athlete experience. He is going to be a great addition to our team.” Rest of the story at http://www.statesmenathletics.com/article/8514.php?mc_cid=f2780f6030&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2019 Senior Nationals: Women’s Freestyle Preview
With each passing day, the Olympic Trials get closer and tensions run higher as countless athletes try to turn a lifelong dream into reality. But before one can win the Trials to claim a spot on the Olympic Team, they must first qualify for the Trials. This weekend’s Senior Nationals is one of the best opportunities to do so, with the top five finishers at each weight will earn a berth in next Spring’s Trials. Expect to see some of the best wrestling on the planet from seasoned veterans and newcomers alike in Forth Worth. Below, I dive into each weight a little bit to paint a picture of where things stand heading into the weekend.
50 kg
The clear favorite at this weight is Victoria Anthony, who has twice finished fifth at the World Championships. Vicky can score points in bunches and has an inside trip that’s as good as any you will see at any level of wrestling. She has been one of the more consistent WFS athletes in America and all signs point to her cruising through this weight in Fort Worth. Another entry at this weight possessing World Championships experience is Alyssa Lampe, who has competed scarcely in recent years and is a bit of a wildcard … Rest of the story and outlook at http://www.hmawrestling.com/article/2019-womens-freestyle-senior-nationals-preview/?mc_cid=f2780f6030&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Reversing old standards: For two Corvallis and Cut Bank wrestlers, fun is just starting
SUPERIOR — For Mariah Wahl and Kiera Davis, the dreams are just beginning. When Wahl, a sophomore at Cut Bank, stepped on the high school mat for the Wolves last year, she became the first female wrestler to compete for the school. Davis, a freshman at Corvallis and the daughter of Blue Devils head coach Matt Davis, is in her first year competing in the sport. “I’m glad that so many people are doing it, especially women, and I’m glad it’s starting to become a deal where we’re starting to get noticed a lot because we used to never get noticed for these things,” Kiera Davis said. “Having a girl step out on to a guy’s mat is a pretty good accomplishment.” Last week the pair competed at the 2019 Bob Kinney Classic, with Wahl finishing fourth in a tough 132-pound bracket and Davis going 1-2 at 103 pounds. Wahl is a standout wrestler on the AAU Team Montana and with the North Montana Wrestling Club, finishing first in the 152 pound Girls Elite folkstyle bracket at the Montana State AAU Folkstyle tournament this past March. 35th College News, Notes & Results

3rd Season Column 16: Mid December Musings; SoCon News; Cue the local angle; and music
“Ah distinctly I remember, It was in the bleak December..” wrote one Edgar Allen Poe in The Raven, one of the worlds great poems. And while the weather across the wrestling world takes its typical chilly turn, a couple of teams are muy caliente come this particular mid month mark. Let’s take a look see, shall we?
Numerous words were written and spoken about the unsteady nature of the team from Mt. Pleasant of late. Several seasons worth of high profile defections and sub par dual meet and tournament results had outsiders thinking and saying Tom Borellis Chippewas had fallen back to the pack. That they were becoming something quite a bit different than the 16X conference champs they had been. That the regression was only partly due to Missouris admission to the MAC and the Tigers immediate ascension to the conference throne. Well, well, welcome, 2019 season, and welcome back, Chippewas! Borellis Boyz have steadied the canoe with a sterling showing at 3 straight tournaments. 11 Top 5 finishes out the gate at the Michigan State Open, 4 first place showings in Boone, NC, at the App State Open, and a team Bronze at the Black Knight Invitational. Then CMU hit the dual meet road to a 2-1 tune through last week. The only setback, a 10 point loss in Anne Arbor to Michigan where CMU won 4 bouts to 6 for the Wolverines. Back to back road wins by double digits over Top 25 foes Lock Haven and Rider show the Chips have some steam to their strokes as they paddle full speed towards the Midlands Tournament at months end.  Rest of the coumn and story at https://morewrestlingplease.wordpress.com/2019/12/16/3rd-season-column-16-mid-december-musings-socon-news-cue-the-local-angle-and-music/?mc_cid=e30f8eb0f1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Iowa Wesleyan University Announced a $250,000 Gift for a Wrestling Training Facility
by DeWayne P. Frazier, Ph.D. Vice President for Academic Affairs
Mount Pleasant, Iowa – December 16, 2019 – While hosting wrestling legend Dan Gable on campus, Iowa Wesleyan University announced a $250,000 gift from Mark and Sandy Willis. Mark is a 1970 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan and a 2017 inductee into the IW Tiger Athletics Hall of Fame. This gift will be used toward a building remodel to create a state-of-the-art wrestling training center. The building, located at 205 E. Taft Street, was donated to Iowa Wesleyan in 2007 by the Randy and Karly Beavers Family. It will be named the ‘Willis Wrestling Facility’ and will house a training area, locker rooms, a weight room, and other wrestling specific amenities. It will also house offices and a film room for the wrestling program and other athletic staff. “The impact of this gift from Mark and Sandy is significant for our community, from our athletics program to our enrollment management efforts,” said Iowa Wesleyan President Chris Plunkett. “This facility will also have an immediate and positive impact on our recruiting efforts for future Tigers.” The Mark and Sandy Willis gift was given as a challenge to other alumni and wrestling fans to help grow a solid foundation for the program’s future. Renovation is expected to begin in late spring following the completion of a successful fundraising effort for the new wrestling program. The facility should be completed by the fall of 2020. “Thanks to the incredible support from Mark and Sandy Willis, men’s and women’s Tiger wrestling student-athletes will now enjoy the benefits of a new training facility,” said Derek Zander, director of athletics. “The facility will house all of the day-to-day operations of our teams, coaches, and staff. It will greatly enhance the experience of our student-athletes and will assure potential recruits of our university’s commitment to excellence to this new program.” Dan Gable addressed the crowd to share in his excitement for the launch of the Tigers wrestling programs. “There is no reason girls should not have the same opportunities as boys when it comes to what sports have to offer,” said Coach Gable. “When you look at the sport of wrestling, there are numerous life skills that it teaches.” Last May, Iowa Wesleyan announced the launch of a men’s and women’s wrestling program to begin in fall 2020.  Rest of the story at https://www.thepredicament.com/2019/12/iowa-wesleyan-university-announced-a-250000-gift-for-a-wrestling-training-facility/?mc_cid=d7de0df08e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

From above the Arctic Circle comes a wrestler who likes to throw some weight around
Spencer Woods is a relative newcomer to the sport he hopes will take him to next year’s Summer Olympics, and when you hear about his first real taste of Greco-Roman wrestling, you might be surprised it wasn’t also his last. It happened several years ago when Woods was a Kotzebue High freshman at a tournament in Las Vegas that offered competition in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. Folkstyle is the kind of wrestling Woods grew up with in Shungnak and Kotzebue, the kind contested in Alaska high schools. Greco-Roman is the kind of wrestling where competitors must remain on their feet and battle chest-to-chest, the kind of wrestling where a guy sometimes picks up his opponent and hurls him across the mat. It’s the kind of wrestling, Woods says, that people like to watch. MAC East Division: Wrestler of the Week
DJ Fehlman, Lock Haven—Senior, Warren, Pa. (Warren High School)
Lock Haven senior DJ Fehlman at 133 lbs., enjoyed a busy and perfect weekend for the Bald Eagles. Fehlman went a perfect 4-0 and helped Lock Haven got 4-0 as he recorded a win in each of the four dual victories. With the four wins, Fehlman pushed his career win total to 99. The returning national qualifier will look for win No. 100 this week in MAC Eastern Division action. Fehlman started his week with a huge win vs. Navy on Friday, Dec. 13. After the match started at 141, it was all up to Fehlman in the night’s final bout to seal the team-victory in front of 2,000-plus at Red Lion High School in the 2019 Rumble in the Jungle.
As the Bald Eagles clung to a one-point 16-15 lead heading into the final bout, Fehlman put it away in style, dominating Navy’s Casey Cobb, 9-3. Fehlman and Cobb, who was listed in some national rankings this week, were tied 0-0 after one, but Fehlman led 7-2 after an exciting second period, thanks to a six-point move after a hard-fought takedown and four quick near-fall points. A late Fehlman third-period takedown sealed the win. UNC-Pembroke’s Daggett Named MEC Wrestler Of The Week

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – A quartet of victories, including a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents, as well as a trip to the podium, has earned all-American Nick Daggett a weekly honor from the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the league office announced Tuesday.
Daggett was named MEC Wrestler of the Week after registering four wins at the prestigious Midwest Classic over the weekend, including a trio of wins on Sunday that ultimately led to a fourth-place showing. Daggett, who dropped a tight decision in Saturday’s quarterfinal round, rebounded with a pin of Davenport’s Daniel Poupore in his opening match on Sunday, and then took down ninth-ranked Jacob Dunlop (Gannon) and sixth-ranked Tyler Kreith (Maryville) to advance through to the third-place bout. His run would end there, unfortunately, with a 4-2 decision to top-ranked Carlos Jacquez of Lindenwood.
A three-year starter for the Black & Gold, Daggett has compiled 74 wins already in his collegiate career, including a 13-3 mark this season. He has qualified for each of the last two NCAA Division II National Championships, including an all-American run as a freshman in 2017-18. New rule in wrestling producing more mat time (in Pennsylvania)
Thanks to a new wrestling rule, more athletes will be able to compete in tournaments this year. The rule allows two wrestlers from the same school to compete in the same weight class in tournaments.
There are a couple provisions to consider. The first is that there must be room in the bracket for extra wrestlers. For example, when a 16-man bracket has 13 competitors, those three spots can be taken up by a wrestler whose teammate is already in the bracket. If the bracket is full, then you can’t put the extra wrestler into the tournament. The other major stumbling block is if a tournament has a JV tournament during or leading up to the main tournament. An example of that would be the JV event held the day before the Powerade Wrestling Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School. The rule will help some programs that have a logjam at a weight class, but it will really benefit programs that are not struggling with a numbers problem. Not only is this a great idea, but one has to wonder why it took so long to come to fruition. USA Wrestling – Gary Abbott’s Blog : Top 10 wrestling stories of 2019

TDR Editor’s Notes; One of the best wrestling writers in the country has his annual list of top stories and events. It is well worth reading all of it.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
BY GARY ABBOTT, USA WRESTLING
It has become a holiday tradition for me to take a break from the daily grind, and look back on the year in wrestling which is coming to an end. Putting together an annual Top 10 list of wrestling stories is not always an easy task, as there have been a ton of great achievements and amazing athletes to consider. With the Senior Nationals being held in late December, right before Christmas, I had a late start doing the research for this story. But as in other years, it is truly enjoyable going back in time, pulling together the details of these events, and trying to craft a column to share with the wrestling community. This is one of the ways I enjoy my holiday season.
The 2019 year had a variety of great stories. Here is my top 10 list of 2019:
1. Adeline Gray wins record fifth World title – You have to give credit where it is due. Our top story of the year is about the same great athlete as it was last year. Adeline Gray set the new record for career Senior World gold medals by claiming her fifth World title with a powerful performance in Nur-Sultan, Kazakshtan. Gray was dominant. She opened the tournament with three straight technical falls. In the semifinals, she won a smart 5-1 decision over past World champion Aline Focken of Germany. Her finals was another masterful 4-2 win over Hiroe Suzuki of Japan. She did this only a short time after having surgery on her hands over the summer, a major obstacle which could not slow her down. Facing a loaded weight class, Gray continues to set the standard when it most counts. Gray moved ahead of four-time Senior World champions John Smith, Tricia Saunders and Jordan Burroughs with her victory. Next up in 2020 is a run at the Olympic gold which has eluded her. Without doubt, Adeline Gray is an all-time great, with even more achievements ahead of her to look forward to.

2. Kyle Dake and J’den Cox repeat as World champions – Winning a World title is a tremendous feat. Repeating as a World champion takes that achievement up to an even higher level. After winning 2018 World titles in Budapest, Hungary, Kyle Dake and J’den Cox decided to remain in their non-Olympic weight classes for one more year to defend their turf. Dake spent much of the season recovering from injury, and needed to delay his 79 kg Final X series to a Special Wrestle-off, beating Alex Dieringer in a Special Wrestle-off in Texas. Cox defeated college star Bo Nickal in his 92 kg Final X matchup. At the Worlds in Nur-Sultan, Cox took care of business first. He shut out all four of his opponents on the way to gold, outscoring them 26-0. In the finals, he beat a regular opponent, Alireza Karimimachiani of Iran, 4-0. The next night was Dake’s turn in the finals. All four of his opponents were from former Soviet republics. After a tech-fall win in his opener, Dake beat Russian Gadzhi Nabiev 5-1 in the quarters and Uzbekistan veteran Rashid Kurbanov in the semifinals, 6-1. For the second straight year, Dake faced tough Jabrayil Hasanov of Azerbaijan in the finals … Rest of this excellent summary of this year’s wrestling events at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2019/December/27/Abbott-Blog-Top-10-wrestling-stories-of-2019?fbclid=IwAR3IWPAKaealtYGFY0Wk33_YwUlaWLMtDkbcln2ROY_yjM6ZvnGcYOYWnzE
