Wainwright named Super Region 2 Coach of the Year

MANHEIM, PA. – Newberry wrestling Head Coach Cy Wainwright has been named the 2019 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division II Super Region 2 Coach of the Year. “I couldn’t have done this without my support staff,” said Wainwright. “Assistant Coaches Bryant Blanton, Deral Brown, our Athletic Trainer Megan Nilsen and our Athletic Communications contact Andy Rogacki have all played key roles in the success of this season,” Wainwright continued.
Coach Wainwright has led the Wolves to a 12-3 record and a perfect 6-0 record in the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas. With the perfect record in conference action, Newberry was able to claim the conference championship in its inaugural season. Wainwright is in his third season at the helm and has compiled a record of 27-18 with a conference record of 16-2. During his tenure, the Wolves have won their conference championship all three years, twice in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) and one in the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Conference.Wainwright earned the ECAC Coach of the Year a season ago after posting a 5-1 record in conference action.  Rest of the story at https://newberrywolves.com/news/2019/2/22/wrestling-wainwright-named-super-region-2-coach-of-the-year.aspx?mc_cid=a552c87db1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Cody Inducted To National Wrestling Hall Of Fame

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Our congratulations to Coach Mark Cody for this well deserved honor. We look forward to his induction.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
CLINTON, S.C. —- The National Wrestling Hall of Fame of the Upstate New York State Chapter announced their 2019 inductees into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and who will be receiving the Lifetime Service Award. The list includes Presbyterian College Director of Wrestling Mark Cody.  “I am grateful to receive this honor. It’s special to be recognized for what you have given to the sport of wrestling,” said Cody. “I hope I have served both my former and current student athletes well.”

Cody was hired in December of 2017 to be the Blue Hose Inaugural Director of Wrestling after spending the prior six seasons as the head wrestling coach at the University of Oklahoma. In Norman, Cody led the Sooners to four top-13 finishes, including a 10th place finish in 2014. Under his leadership, the Sooners produced 10 All-Americans, and three national finalists, including two National Champions, Kendric Maple (2013), and Cody Brewer (2015). Cody was also instrumental in developing wrestlers off the mat and in fostering an OU Wrestling presence in the community. His student-athletes earned a total of 13 National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-America honors, and OU’s six Academic All-Americans during the 2013-14 school year were most in the nation. He also instituted an anti-bullying campaign in 2015 in which his wrestlers and staff routinely spoke to students at area elementary schools.

Cody came to Oklahoma after nine years at American, where he led the Eagles to a program-best fifth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships. The team produced three All-Americans after qualifying six for the tournament, while also posting a school record 3.48 grade point average. He took over the program at American after it had been dropped and then resurrected with just 4.5 scholarships available for seven wrestlers. Cody helped American earn its first national qualifiers in 2005 which led to six straight season of top 25 finishes as a team and earning trips to the NCAA Tournament. Wrestling museum re-opening looks to the future

WATERLOO — The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum is re-opening its doors after a $1.4 million renovation. A group of wrestling greats, including Dan Gable, came to the museum to celebrate the ribbon cutting with Gable beer from Singlespeed Brewing. “I love it,” Gable said. “We’re about 90 percent done, and its so much more open. It’s upgraded.”

The renovation has expanded the wrestling room and added four kiosks for museum visitors to use. “We have a part of the history of the state of Iowa,” Gable said. “We’ve done a lot in wrestling all throughout the state.” For Gable, museums are about the future. “There are so many things that are Rest of the story at https://wcfcourier.com/news/local/wrestling-museum-re-opening-looks-to-the-future-photos/article_286309be-f516-56db-83ef-7a039094052d.html?mc_cid=9fa730503d&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Sanderson voted InterMat Coach of the Year for sixth time

Penn State head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson has been named 2019 InterMat Coach of the Year, the amateur wrestling website announced Friday. It is the sixth time Sanderson has earned Coach of the Year honors in the award’s 14-year history. What’s more, it’s the fourth consecutive year for the 39-year-old Utah native to have received this honor … and it happens to be the fourth straight year Penn State has won the team title at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

Presented each year since 2006 to the best collegiate wrestling coach in all divisions, the award is based exclusively on the votes of writers and executives at InterMat prior to the announcement of other college wrestling awards. Each staff member is asked to select five coaches and rank them from first to fifth based on their performance for the season just completed. Point values are assigned to each placement, ranging from one point to a wrestler listed fifth on a voter’s ballot, up to nine points for a first-place vote.

Sanderson received half of the first-place votes from the InterMat staff, for a total of 49 points, to propel him to the top of the balloting for the fourth straight year. Close behind in the balloting was Rutgers head coach Scott Goodale who guided Nick Suriano and Anthony Ashnault to titles at 133 and 149 pounds, respectively … making them the school’s first-ever champs in the nearly 90-year history of the NCAA wrestling championships. Goodale received a total of 42 points, including one first-place vote, to put him in second place in this year’s balloting. Also receiving one first-place vote each: Iowa State’s Kevin Dresser (who place third overall, with 41 points), Minnesota’s Brandon Eggum (in fourth place, with 20 points), Tony Robie of Virginia Tech (in sixth place, tallying 15 points), and Lock Haven’s Scott Moore (coming in seventh, with 12 points).  Much has been made about a Penn State wrestling dynasty . Pecora is on verge of becoming college wrestling’s dual wins king

TDR Editorrr’s Notes ; A topic of great interest to us is the record and recognition of the college coaches and teams and their record of victories. We look forward to Coach Pecora setting a new record and hope to be there when it happens, possibly next season,…. or the next.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The coach who next year could become college wrestling’s king of dual wins scored his biggest victory seven years ago. Pat Pecora took down cancer. That’s only part of the story. The longtime leader of the Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats started coughing up blood in 2012. It was months after his brother passed away following a battle with cancer. Pecora tried brushing off his symptoms. But his wife, Tracy, is a nurse and she insisted a trip to the doctor. “They found something in my upper lung,” Pecora said. They discovered cancer. Doctors removed the upper lobe of Pecora’s lung and released him from the hospital the next day with orders to rest at home. He was back in the wrestling room a day later. “I had to move, get on the stepper, something,” he said. Then Tracy Pecora walked in.

She came home and couldn’t find her husband. It didn’t take her long to find him. “She walked in, and I’m sure I had that look of a kid who’s just been caught playing hooky,” Pecora laughed. “She wasn’t happy.”  That illustration of zeal and dedication is just one snapshot in a four-decade mosaic that is Pecora’s incredible coaching career. The 65-year-old will wrap up his 43rd season this weekend when the Mountain Cats wrestle at the Division II NCAA Championships in Cleveland. Pecora’s tenure at Pitt-Johnstown began a response to a newspaper clipping when he was 22.
