Five Straight Bonus Point Wins Lead @PackWrestle Over Brown 29-10

RALEIGH, N.C. – The #9 NC State wrestling team scored five straight bonus point wins, including three straight technical falls, and defeated visiting Brown, 29-10, Saturday afternoon at the PNC Arena. The dual started at 285 pounds, and the Bears picked up decisions at heavyweight and 125 pounds to build a 6-0 lead. NC State then took the team lead with six straight wins, the first five of which went for bonus points.

Bumping up to 133 pounds today, #13 Sean Fausz started the streak with a 17-2 technical fall. In control early, Fausz took an 8-1 lead after the first and final takedown in the third ended the bout early. The Pack also made a switch at 141 pounds, as Jamel Morris got the start and scored a 16-0 tech fall. Morris was quick off the mat, as his tech fall came in the first period. After a takedown, Morris used a two-point near fall then three straight four-point near falls to claim the win.

#4 Justin Oliver made it three straight tech falls for the Pack with his 19-4 win. Oliver scored a takedown and then a four-point near fall in the third to end his bout early as well.

Why Wrestlers Make the Best Employees

“More enduringly than any other sport, wrestling teaches self-control and pride. Some have wrestled without great skill—none have wrestled without pride.” ~ Dan Gable

Today’s workforce is extremely competitive. When comparing resumes it’s easy to get lost in all the bullet points of software literacy and past responsibilities. If you really want to separate two seemingly qualified employees, bring them in for an interview and ask a simple question, “Have you ever participated in sports at an elite level?”

“Current research indicates that individuals who have competed in elite level athletics, i.e., collegiate, international, or professional level competition possess higher levels of emotional intelligence than their non-athlete counterparts,” says Richard Mendelson, I.O. psychologist and founder of Dynamic IO Consultants, a consulting firm specializing in human capital management and other services.

Berger, Huskers Connect With Local Wrestler

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Great positive human interest story from the land of the Cornhuskers.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Walk through an airport wearing a T-Shirt that indicates you’re affiliated with wrestling, and you’re bound to have some stranger strike up a conversation with you about the sport. It’s representative of a strong bond between competitors and coaches, and even wrestling fans; a special connection that’s arguably different from more mainstream sports, like football or basketball. “The wrestling family is that – it’s a family,” Nebraska senior wrestler Tyler Berger said. “We take care of each other.” It’s especially true at Nebraska. That family feel is also a big reason Berger felt honored to be able to connect with 16-year-old Harley Kessler, a wrestler at North Star High School diagnosed in August with Osteosarcoma. It’s the same type of rare bone cancer that brought national awareness to Purdue student and football fan Tyler Trent. “When I reached out to Harley,” Berger said, “I wanted him to know he has a family here, that it’s not just the Division I program, the Huskers and then the high school programs. We’re all in it together.”

Kessler had begun experiencing severe leg pain when a bone scan revealed a mass in his tibia. The cancer became so severe that in mid-December, doctors had to amputate his left leg below the knee. When Kessler awoke from that surgery, he saw a pair of wrestling shoes. They were from Berger, who’d sent them to the hospital via the North Star coaches. Berger also wrote Kessler a letter of inspiration. And on Sunday, Kessler’s dream of a Nebraska wrestling experience, granted through Union Bank and Trust’s Magic Moments, culminated when he served as an honorary captain during the Huskers’ dual with Northwestern. “It’s what our sport teaches us,” Nebraska coach Mark Manning said. “Wrestling is a tough, one-on-one sport that requires a tremendous amount of discipline and commitment. We really love that Harley loves our sport. “That’s what it’s all about. It’s about giving yourself. We wanted to give back to Harley. He loves Nebraska wrestling, and we want him to be a part of it.” Manning first met Kessler through the initial Magic Moments ceremony at the North Star gymnasium on Dec. 10, before Kessler had his surgery. A family neighbor had nominated Kessler and his family for the Miracle Moment.

“Wrestling is his life,” said Stephanie Duley, Kessler’s mother. “You get into wrestling, and you breathe nothing but wrestling.” Kessler said he was excited and honored to serve as an honorary captain. The Nebraska program also saluted him in this tribute video. “It’s had a big impact,” he said. “It’s something I’ve really enjoyed and am thankful for.”

Connecting with Kessler has helped Berger remember that collegiate student athletes have a responsibility outside of a sport that doesn’t revolve around them. After all, Berger doesn’t want his entire Husker experience as a wrestler to be 100 percent about him. He wants to reach out. He wants to help. “It’s good to have Harley, a kid who looks up to guys like us,” Berger said. “It kind of makes us take a step back and see a bigger picture of a bigger family of Husker wrestling and Huskers athletics. To have him come, it’s a good way to humble us. We get to see how much he enjoys us and how much he enjoys wrestling.” Rest of the Story, pictures and details at http://www.huskers.com//ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&ATCLID=211785905&mc_cid=376ecdb5ed&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

NC State’s Hidlay, Virginia’s Mueller recognized as Wrestlers of the Week

NC State’s Hidlay, Virginia’s Mueller recognized

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference has recognized NC State 157-pound sophomore Hayden Hidlay and Virginia 125-pound junior Jack Mueller as conference Co-Wrestlers of the Week after each went unbeaten while turning in impressive performances in the South Beach Duals and regular-season matches. The ACC Wrestler of the Week honor is the second of the season for the Wolfpack’s Hidlay, while Mueller – who saw his first collegiate action of the season on Dec. 20 – was honored for the first time. Hidlay enters this week ranked No. 4 nationally in his weight class by InterMat, while Mueller holds a No. 5 ranking. Hidlay picked up his second top-10 win of the season this past Sunday with a 7-2 decision over No. 8 Ke-Shawn Hayes of Ohio State. The Lewistown, Pennsylvania, native scored both of the takedowns in the match – one in the second period and another in the third. Hidlay’s effort against the Buckeyes came after he went 4-0 at the South Beach Duals at Ft. Lauderdale, outscoring his foes 61-16 and notching three bonus-point wins. The latter efforts included two wins by technical fall and one by major decision. TOM’s College Wrestler of the Week – January 7th, 2019

By Earl Smith Posted on 01/07/2019

Original photo courtesy of Cam Kramer

This week’s college wrestler of the week Tyler Berger of Nebraska earns the honor after getting his hand raised in a battle of top-three ranked wrestlers on Sunday during the Huskers dual with Northwestern. Berger entered the match ranked third in the country, just behind the Wildcats Ryan Deakin, who was second and undefeated. Tyler was trailing 1-0 in the third period; however he used a reversal and a pair of takedowns to get the 6-3 win. This win comes after Deakin dominated his way through the Midlands Championships, after picking up a title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational where he faced little resistance. Berger was third in Las Vegas and was handed his only loss of the season, thus far, in the quarterfinals. Counting his run through the consolations to third-place, Berger is now on a seven-match winning streak where he has downed Deakin, NCAA runner-up Hayden Hidlay (NC State), and seventh-ranked Ke-Shawn Hayes (Ohio State). Tyler is a two-time All-American (third – 2018, fifth – 2017) out of Prineville, Oregon.
