Notable Offseason DI Transfer
TDR Editor’s Notes; The following is from an article by Earl Smith on the Open Mat. He covers some of the most notable transfers which could stir things up in the team race. The first one is of special interest to local wrestling fans.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The spring is typically a busy season for transfers and this year is no different. In fact, it seems like more high profile wrestlers are on the move than ever. Six of the top ten teams at the 2018 NCAA Championships added a notable transfer and below is a list of ten significant wrestlers that will be appearing in new singlets during the upcoming 2018-19 season.
Justin Oliver, NC State – 149 LBS (Previous school Central Michigan)
The Wolfpack fill a potential hole at 149 lbs with Oliver a 2016 All-American who has a year of eligibility remaining. Justin will be looking for help getting back onto the podium after finishing in the round of 12 in each of the last two seasons. With the graduation of three-time NCAA champion Zain Retherford, 149 could be up for grabs, and if Oliver is in contention, then NC State has a good shot at competing for another NCAA team trophy. Ramos Grabs Silver At Pan-Am Championships
TDR Editor’s Notes; Good to see wrestlers from North Carolina competing on a bigger stage. It is bound to help them in the college season next winter.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
North Carolina senior Ethan Ramos won the silver medal at 79kg Saturday at the 2018 Pan-Am Championships in Lima, Peru. Representing Puerto Rico, Ramos teched Canadian Shawn Daye-Finley 14-4 in the quarterfinals before pinning Peru’s Marcos Quesada Martinez in 1:01 for a spot in the final. Ramos, a two-time ACC champion and 2015 All-American at UNC, fell to American Mark Hall 6-0 in the final. Wrestling History in Magazines
TDR Editor’s Notes ; After the N.C. Hall of Fame Banquet and the presentation of the James Johnson Awards and the finalization of the TDR Top 12 List we will move back to updating several wrestling history projects. Part of this involves collecting and reviewing wrestling magazines and publications. Through the generous donations of veteran coaches we have assembled a fair number of them. We are especially interested in North Carolina wrestling and national college wrestling news and history.
We are looking for the following wrestling periodicals;
Amateur Wrestling News back issues from 1955-1970, 1976-1978, 1981-1988, and 1995-2005.
W.I.N. Magazine back issues from 1994 to 2005 and
North Carolina Mat News any issues 1970-2015.
Do you have some of these that you would like to clear out but do not want to throw them away? Please let us know. E-mail martinkfleming@gmail.com if you have some.
Our thanks and recognition to Hall of Fame Coaches John Welborn, Jerry Barker, Jerry Daniels, and Milt Sherman

Steubenville’s Rice commits to wrestle for N.C. State
TDR Editor’s Notes ; Good to see another Ohio wrestler joining the Wolfpack and he has a family connection here. We hope he has a good senior season before coming to join the team in 2019.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
STEUBENVILLE — Anthony Rice has his priorities in order.
The Steubenville junior recently gave a verbal committment to N.C. State to continue his academic and wrestling careers. “It makes me feel great because now I know where I have to be and where I have to go,” he said in a recent interview at the high school.
“Now during my senior year I can keep on striving to acheive my goals. It takes a lot of pressure off of me, but there will still be lots of pressure to win OVACs and the state because now people are looking at me from everywhere.” Rice is the cousin of current Wolfpack wrestler Tariq Wilson, also a Steubenville alum who finished third in the NCAA Nationals a few weeks back in Cleveland. “Tariq is my cousin. That’s a big reason why I wanted to attend N.C. State. I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Rice added. “I’ll be there with him for two years, so he can take me under his wing for two years. He can teach me and guide me.” Rest of the story at http://www.timesleaderonline.com/sports/local-sports/2018/04/steubenvilles-rice-commits-to-wrestle-for-n-c-state/?mc_cid=eff9bd7aee&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Dixon’s Hudson wins state wrestling title
TDR Editor’s Notes ; Another State Champion finalist for the James Johnson Award is Dixon High School senior Thomas Hudson. He was also undefeated this season.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Senior finished season 53-0
GREENSBORO – Forget about talking, Dixon senior Thomas Hudson was having trouble catching his breath after capturing the NCHSAA 2-A heavyweight state championship Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Hudson, who was driven all season by memories of going 0-2 in last year’s state championship at 220 pounds, pinned West Craven junior Joshua Crump with 51 seconds left in the second period to not only take home the gold but also finish the season undefeated at 53-0.
And just for good measure the 18-year-old Hudson finishes his career with 158 wins – second in school history to only Josh Thomas, who graduated in 2016 with 168 victories. Rest of the story at http://www.jdnews.com/sports/20180217/dixons-hudson-wins-state-wrestling-title
