Ken Chertow leaving Centre County to start Division II wrestling program from scratch
BY RYNE GERY rgery@centredaily.com
Fifteen years ago, Ken Chertow checked off an item on his bucket list with the construction of his brick home in Boalsburg complete with its own wrestling room. Chertow dedicated his life to the sport, and the specially designed space he calls the Home Training Center allowed him to hold workouts on his property. It features offices and two wrestling rooms, where Chertow trained novice wrestlers in elementary school and worked with PIAA champions and future NCAA All-Americans since 2002. Chertow even installed a custom gate at his home’s entrance on Linden Hall Road, featuring the silhouette of a wrestler and the Olympic rings as another way for him to promote his sport. “People know this is the wrestling house,” Chertow said at the Home Training Center in the last week of March. But after 15 years, the place he trains won’t be the wrestling house in Centre County anymore — there’s a “For Sale” sign near the gate, and Chertow has plans to live in a six-month rental house in Charlotte, N.C., as he begins his tenure as the head coach of a start-up Division II program at Queens University of Charlotte. TDR TOP 12 – The best wrestlers of Eastern North Carolina – 2016-2017
TDR Editor’s Notes ; This entry has the next 3 weight classes of the top eastern North Carolina wrestlers with at least 12 at each weight class. Engraved wooden plaques with the wrestlers’ names will be presented to the top 35. That number was chosen as it would reflect a first team and second team for each weight class and 7 wild cards or ‘others to be recognized’. Once all weigh classes are displayed and the top 35 are named then we will announce the winners of the top 4 annual Big Awards that we have statues presented to the wrestlers. This season we had the most state champions and medalists in one year in eastern N.C in recent memory.

Bentley Receives New Three-Year Contract
TDR Editor’s Notes ; Great to see a North Carolina born and raised wrestler become a successful coach that will continue to build the ASU program.
*************************************************
BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State director of athletics Doug Gillin announced a new three-year contract for Appalachian State wrestling head coach JohnMark Bentley on Friday. The new three-year deal begins on July 1, 2017 and runs through July 30, 2020. “I am excited that JohnMark Bentley will remain the leader of our wrestling program,” Gillin said. “The growth and success of the program under JohnMark in both the Southern Conference and at the national level continues to be impressive. On top of all of the success on the mat, I am especially proud of the commitment that our wrestling program makes to campus and community involvement as well as its work in the classroom,” Gillin continued. “I’m thankful to Coach Bentley for his continued commitment to Appalachian State and am thrilled that he and his family will remain a part of the Appalachian family.” A three-time Southern Conference Coach of the Year, Bentley has been at the helm of Appalachian State wrestling for the past nine years, guiding them to three SoCon regular season championships and one SoCon Tournament championship. Bears to wrestle in 2017-18
TDR Editor’s Notes ; Great to see new wrestling programs and teams being started even if in far away central Louisiana.
*********************************************
Soon enough, Bolton’s opponents will learn how difficult it is to wrestle a Bear.
Bolton announced that it will begin a wrestling program in the 2017-18 school year — making it the first Central Louisiana school to do so. “Wrestling is the oldest sport in the world and it’s strange this is the only part of the state that doesn’t have it.” Bolton athletic director Jason LaChica said. “What we aim to do is to try to narrow out the competition and bring something to Central Louisiana that could light a fire and spread. If we have enough interest, we may be able to get a collegiate wrestling program up here somewhere.”

National Wrestling Media Association announces annual wrestling journalism awards
TDR Editor’s Notes ; Interesting to learn about and recognize the coverage of the sport in other ends of the country.

By Jason Bryant, NWMA | March 30, 2017, 1:01 p.m. (ET)
New Brighton, Minnesota – The National Wrestling Media Association presented its annual wrestling journalism awards during the 2017 NCAA Division I Championships in St. Louis on March 18.

This includes reporters, editors, publishers, webmasters, photographers, broadcasters, sports information directors and other media professionals who share an interest and involvement in the sport. “With the growth of new media and the sport’s presence on the internet, the opportunity for diverse and dynamic coverage has improved over the years,” said NWMA President Jason Bryant. “It’s allowed the organization to recognize groups and individuals who have added significant value to the wrestling landscape in a variety of formats.” Rest of the story at … http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2017/March/30/NWMA-Awards?mc_cid=8d32303042&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Penn State’s Zain Retherford wins 2017 WIN Magazine/Culture House Dan Hodge Trophy, presented by ASICS
TDR Editor’s Notes ; Compliments to WIN Magazine on their continuing efforts to promote and cover amateur wrestling. We admit that we took the idea of presenting the big Awards of the year out at football games and other big sporting events.

NEWTON, Iowa — The WIN Magazine/Culture House Dan Hodge Trophy has been awarded to the most dominant collegiate wrestler since 1995. Out of an amazing group of four Hodge finalists this year, Penn State two-time NCAA champ Zain Retherford has been named the 2017 Hodge winner, presented annually to the top collegian by ASICS. “I met Dan Hodge at a National Wrestling Hall of Fame event a few years ago. To win something like this named in his honor is pretty awesome,” Retherford said. “This award symbolizes who he is as a person and competitor.” The award, created by Culture House’s Mike Chapman, is named after Hodge, who was a three-time NCAA champion for the University of Oklahoma from 1955 to 1957, was undefeated over those three years at 46-0 and pinned an amazing 36 of those opponents. Retherford, who was 28-0 this season, won a second straight NCAA title at 149 pounds after completely dismantling competitors at the weight for a second straight year. Retherford has won 63 straight matches over the past two years to move his career record to 95-3. And much like his 2015-2016 run of domination, this year’s tally included only two matches in which the Nittany Lion did not score bonus points.

Oklahoma Wesleyan hires Robinson as head coach
TDR Editor’s Notes ; A new coach at a new program. Yes college wrestling is being added at Oklahoma Wesleyan University. The NAIA has at least four schools adding wrestling next year.
********************************************************
Colby Robinson has been hired as the first head coach of the brand-new wrestling program at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, the Bartlesville-based school announced Wednesday. As InterMat reported back in December, OKWU had announced it was adding a men’s intercollegiate wrestling program, effective in the 2017-18 academic year.
For the past four years, Robinson has served as head wrestling coach at De Smet High School in St. Louis. Prior to that, Robinson was assistant coach of the men’s and women’s wrestling programs at Missouri Baptist. While at MBU, Robinson coached over 10 NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) All-Americans, 15 WCWA (Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association) All-Americans, a Pan-Am placer, and a WCWA National Champion. Robinson helped lead the Spartans to a 2nd place finish in the Metro Catholic Conference. What’s more, Robinson recruited both men and women wrestlers from Texas, Oklahoma, California, Missouri, and Florida.

Last East Carolina University Open Work Out

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Passing along the news of an opportunity to learn and practice some wrestling this Sunday at East Carolina University.
********************************************
Reminder of our last Open Workout of the year this Sunday April 2nd from 2:00 – 4:00 at the Student Rec Center on the ECU campus at 7th & Cotanche Streets near downtown. Park in the lot across the street from McDonald’s at 9th & Cotanche.
We will do a little live situation wrestling and I will instruct on the following:
– Low single leg attack, the way Oklahoma State coach John Smith did it on the way to 5 world titles
– Bow & Arrow offense from the top with 2 pinning combinations
– Basic hip throw mechanics
– Countering top moves
note: If you have any seniors attending ECU in the fall have them get in touch if they would like to wrestle for the Pirates. Basically, any ECU student that gets to practice daily will get in our line-up in tournament competition.

Farmer says wrestling helped him become O-line starter
TDR Editor’s Notes ; Always enjoy when I find an article or opinion agrees with what I have been saying for a long time. Wrestling makes a football player better at football.
*******************************************
Tanner Farmer was back practicing with the Nebraska wrestling team this winter for a second stint, and says he’ll keep doing so as long as he’s at Nebraska, now as something of a two-sport Husker.
He’s convinced it’s his background as a state champion wrestler, and the time he spent training with the Husker wrestling team one year ago, that helped him become a starter at right guard with the Nebraska football team in 2016, so he doesn’t plan on abandoning that routine now. “Wrestling, in my opinion, is the best thing for an offensive linemen,” Farmer said last week. “There is also basketball, which is great, too. (Wrestling) really helps with my footwork. It really helps with my foot speed, my balance, my flexibility. It just all-round helps me. It’s the best thing for me. If it wasn’t for wrestling, I don’t think I’d be a starter right now. That really helped me last year. It helped get me in the right mindset.” Rest of the Story at …. http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/football/farmer-says-wrestling-helped-him-become-o-line-starter/article_f3c9bb98-9f75-5594-9bb3-fffdcbcab5fa.html?mc_cid=174e0d2120&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
