Patience is virtue for The Citadel

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Citadel is having a down year yet Coach Hjerling has a strong tradition and program and they are looking at doing well in the post season.
*************************************************
The operative word inside The Citadel’s wrestling room this year? Patience. Veteran coach Rob Hjerling and his team don’t have much choice. The Bulldogs are a young squad, starting three freshmen and four sophomores, and a 2-7 dual-meet record entering Sunday’s home faceoff against Campbell shows that. However, Hjerling says he sees his team getting better, “even if the overall team results don’t reflect that on paper.” “We’re not looking past this year,” he said. “We have some key individuals that are looking to finish strong and from a coaching standpoint, the staff is keeping the team results in perspective. We know we’re developing, getting better. We’re focusing on getting better and eventually the results will show.” Staying positive, Hjerling says, is key. “The coaching staff has to be patient. We’ve been at this a little while, we’ve set a standard for what success is and these guys know what the overall expectations are,” he said. “There are expectations on our end, but there’s no acceptance of not improving. TDR Editor’s Notes ; Our compliments to the only Men’s and Women’s programs in Texas. We hope to see that status being changed by other schools adding wrestling soon.
****************************************************

This young wrestling program takes great pride in being the only collegiate wrestling team in the Lone Star State. “That says a lot. Emmanuel College wins first NCWA National Duals title

TDR Editor’s Notes ; The National Collegiate Wrestling Association provides a chance for all college students to wrestle on that level as they coordinate the efforts of club teams, coaches and wrestlers.
NCWA Championships will be Mar. 9-11, Allen, Texas, as the association celebrates its 20th anniversary.
**************************************************
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Emmanuel College parlayed a quick lead into winning five of the first six matches, and the Lions rolled on to a 33-13 win over Liberty in the championship match of the NCWA National Duals. It is Emmanuel’s first NCWA title of any kind. With the win, the Lions take the Collegiate Cup Trophy home for a year as the Duals champion, and more importantly earn 24 team points that will advance to the NCWA Championships in March. Liberty, as runner-up, earned 23 points toward the nationals, and so on down the 20-team field. This is the eighth consecutive season that the NCWA will have a new National Duals champion. No team has repeated with the title since Grand Valley State won three in a row from 2007-09. Emmanuel clinched the title following the 197-pound bout when Maveric Reichsteiner, the top-ranked NCWA wrestler in that class, pinned Austin Amos of Liberty in 1:43. Reichsteiner scored a takedown in the opening seconds and moved for the fall from there. Rest of the story at …. http://intermatwrestle.com/articles/17576?mc_cid=4e002b9638&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Camels turning the corner in January

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Good to see the Campbell Camels improving.
*************************************************
Cary Kolat admits that Campbell’s season hasn’t unfolded perfectly. As the final month of the season looms, the Camels are 5-6 in dual meets, with a 1-1 record in the Southern Conference. But with a league-heavy schedule leading into March, Kolat is confident his team will be at his best when it matters most. “If you see our record, see the dual meets we were in as a team, we’ve wrestled inconsistent,” he said. “There are times when you send a team out on a mat and you know what you’re getting, but we’re young in areas and we know what we’re getting there. But with training improving and how the last few competitions went, we feel like we’re about to turn a corner. That’s the way myself and our staff feel about that. We’re competing hard.” A 24-13 loss at Appalachian State in mid-December was disappointing, but following a 23-15 loss to Bucknell at the Virginia Duals, Kolat saw something change with his team. Narrow losses to Arizona State and Old Dominion, as well as a 26-16 win over Kent State, were followed by a 24-12 win over fellow SoCon contender Gardner-Webb. “I felt we had a poor performance against Bucknell but mentally turned a corner after that,” Kolat said. “We got back in school, second semester and got back to class, studying and consistent in practicing like we had, and it’s been great. We’re training like veterans.”

KING’S COACH NED McGINLEY TO RETIRE AFTER 48 SEASONS

TDR Editor’s Notes ; We like to recognize long time college coaches. Coach McGinley started their program almost 50 years ago and is one of the longest serving.
********************************************************
WILKES-BARRE — Last month it was revealed by the National Wrestling Media Association that King’s College head wrestling coach Ned McGinley was the longest-tenured active head wrestling coach at all levels of NCAA wrestling.  Now, after 48 years at the helm of the Monarchs, McGinley has decided the 2016-17 season will be his last. McGinley formally made the announcement at a press conference Thursday in King’s Scandlon Gymnasium. McGinley and King’s Wrestling go hand-in-hand. To say McGinley ‘is King’s College Wrestling’ would not be an exaggeration.  After all, McGinley started wrestling at King’s in 1968 and has been the only head coach in program history. The Monarchs began as a Division II program but joined the NCAA Division III ranks in 1980 when King’s became a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference.

Girls-only wrestling getting a statewide push

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Another look at the growth of girl’s wrestling in Nebraska
***********************************************
An effort to add girls wrestling as a winter sport in Nebraska is being made by the Nebraska School Activities Association, and a number of NSAA-sanctioned schools have been helping the cause by offering girls-only brackets at a number of tournaments across the state this season. The first girls-only brackets were wrestled at the High Plains Invitational in Columbus earlier this month, and Oakland-Craig offered the opportunity for girls to compete in their own brackets at their tournament this past weekend. Although wrestling has traditionally been a sport only boys competed in, more girls are getting involved in the sport at a young age and staying with it into their high school years. The growth of girls wrestling across the United States, along with recent Olympic success by the United States women’s team, has fueled an effort to encourage more girls to participate in the sport so that they can create a girls-only activity that would allow them to wrestle competition of their own gender.
Ron Higdon, an assistant director in charge of wrestling at the NSAA, said there is overwhelming support to bring girls-only wrestling into Nebraska.
