Kasper Soaks In Trip to Russia Ahead of 2016-17 Season
DURHAM, N.C.—A little over a month before his redshirt junior season officially got underway, Jacob Kasper got a call from USA Wrestling for an incredible, albeit quick, international journey. The Lexington, Ohio native was selected among a small group of wrestlers to travel to Kemerovo, Russia to compete against wrestlers from all over the world. “I felt honored to be asked [by USA Wrestling] to wrestle in this tournament,” said Kasper. “They were looking for a top senior level guy. I don’t know if I’m necessarily one of the top senior guys for freestyle, but for them to ask was a great honor. I was really excited about the opportunity and I’ll jump at any opportunity to compete.”
Coming off of a redshirt season during which Kasper gained valuable experience training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, the Pan American games and Olympic Trials, he jumped at the opportunity. Wolfpack showcases talent at Brickyard Bash
By Alec Sawyer of The Technician
The NC State wrestling team gave students a unique look at the team Wednesday. Members of the team wrestled throughout the day in the brickyard outside of D.H. Hill Library in an event the team calls “The Brickyard Bash.” Students gathered to watch and interact with the Wolfpack wrestlers. The season starts next month for the team and the event is a good way for the team to reach out to the student body. Wrestlers and coaches hung out around the event talking to students and handing out team schedules. The event is a great way to let people know what the wrestling team is all about, according to head coach Pat Popolizio. “We just want to promote awareness for our upcoming season,” Popolizio said. “It puts an end to our preseason so it’s kind of just a last day event. It makes an exciting atmosphere for the guys.” Rest of the story at www.technicianonline.com/sports/ncsubrickyard

State compels group to look at restoring UD wrestling
Feasibility-study members to gather Monday at the Carpenter Center; Blue Hens haven’t had wrestling team since 1991
NEWARK – Twenty-five years after the University of Delaware eliminated its varsity wrestling program, another effort has surfaced to have it reinstated. Unlike previous attempts, this one involves the state government. Delaware Senate Bill 295, an appropriations measure approved by both branches of the General Assembly at the close of the 2016 legislative session and signed by Gov. Markell, including a section calling on UD to conduct a feasibility study on bringing back wrestling. Lackawanna College to start wrestling program in 2017
As Mark Palmer says — Good News from Pennsylvania
Lackawanna College will be launching an intercollegiate wrestling program starting in the 2017-18 school year, the Pennsylvania school confirmed on Thursday. Lackawanna had placed a listing at the job search website Indeed.com for a “Wrestling Coach – Part Time.” InterMat contacted the school to seek information about the listing. Joseph Paparelli, Lackawanna’s sports information director, said, “We are starting the program next year and are looking for a head coach so we can give him time to start recruiting for this inaugural season.” The new wrestling program would join existing men’s sports programs baseball, basketball, football, golf and soccer, and women’s basketball, bowling, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. As with Lackawanna’s existing intercollegiate sports programs — all competing under the Falcon team name — wrestling would compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Long-time Bakersfield College coach Bill Kalivas …..
Long-time Bakersfield College wrestling coach Bill Kalivas — who filed a civil lawsuit against the California junior college after his contract was not reviewed in 2014 — was awarded nearly $13,000 by a Kern County jury Monday. The article by Mark Palmer has a fuller explanation of the recent court case and what led to it. We just want to share this bit of coaching wrestling history. In his 27 seasons as Bakersfield College wrestling coach, Kalivas compiled a 208-72-2 overall record. His teams won California state team titles in 2002 and 2003, and just missed a three-peat by a half-point in 2004.

There are not too many gyms named in honor of a wrestler. The latest is in Winslow, New Jersey.
Winslow names gym for wrestling great Jordan Burroughs
WINSLOW – As local dignitaries spoke, he gazed into the distance.
Not until former coach Rick Koss started to list achievements — “… district champion … region champion … state champion … national champion … Olympic gold medalist” — did world-famous wrestler Jordan Burroughs crack a smile.
