Corey Mock named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week Jan. 11-17

Corey Mock (Chapel Hill, N.C./University of North Carolina) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 11-17.   Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.  Mock, a freshman 157-pounder, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week following a weekend that included an upset of the nation’s fifth-ranked wrestler and a first-period pin that helped key the Tar Heels to a non-conference victory.   Restof story at http://www.themat.com/section.php?section_id=3&page=showarticle&ArticleID=22998

Cornell & Penn State share Southern Scuffle title

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After two days of wrestling and 958 matches, Cornell and Penn State each claimed a share of the 2010 UNCG Southern Scuffle championship as each team earned 151.5 points during the two days. The Big Red and Nittany Lions each won three individual titles as Kyle Dake, Justin Kerber and Cam Simaz won titles for Cornell, while David Taylor, Ed Ruth and Cameron Wade each won titles for Penn State. 149-pounder Ivan Lopouchanski was the lone UNCG wrestler to place in the tournament, as he came away with a fifth-place finish. Byron Sigmon and Caylor Williams also advanced to day two for the Spartans, but both fell one match short of placing in the tournament.  Rest of story at http://uncg.prestosports.com/sports/wrest/2010-11/releases/20101230jvjtf9

Rocky Mount Telegram PREVIEW: Knights ready to take the next step

The Northern Nash wrestling program went further than any Twin Counties teams previously had in the 3-A state playoffs last year. Now, the Knights have their sights set on a different prize — a state championship.  With 35 names on the roster (and that doesn’t include wrestlers who will join the team this week from the football squad), Knights coach Corey Mercer has lofty expectations for his team.  “Realistically, we want to win the duals and get a couple of individual state championships,” Mercer said. “Expectations are extremely high this year.”
The number of wrestlers on the roster alone aren’t what gives Mercer room for such confidence.  The Knights lost just one wrestler from the team that reached the third round of the playoffs. Sure, that wrestler was the 2009-10 Telegram Wrestler of the Year, Joe Young, but the Knights have some guys who are stepping into a leadership role.  “The Sweet twins (Ryan and Bryan) are really stepping up for us right now,” Mercer said. “A couple of other guys are becoming vocal for us, so we have a lot of guys trying to do the right thing.”  There would be reason to believe that the Knights are going to roll through the Big East Conference, but Mercer believes the level of competition will be right up there with the best.
“Everybody’s always going across the state looking for competition,” Mercer said. “We get the competition locally. It just makes everybody better. If you pull off a win here, it’s a deserved win.”  Nash Central and Rocky Mount High will be two teams that will give the Knights the stiffest competition. The Bulldogs feature three wrestlers who won a conference championship or made the state tournament.  The Gryphons return several key members from last season’s squad.  No matter what happens during the conference season, Mercer and the Knights will be prepared for a run in the playoffs.  “Every weight class is covered,” Mercer said. “Some of the younger kids are going to help us out because I’ll be able to rest some guys. We’ve had a lot of young guys who have bought into the program, and they’re going to help us out this year.”

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –
Three North Carolina wrestlers recorded two victories apiece as the Tar Heels won two dual matches Saturday in the ACC Challenge, held at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill. Carolina sandwiched close victories against Chattanooga and UNC Greensboro around a defeat at the hands of No. 4 Wisconsin. UNC now holds a 4-2 dual record on the season.
Danny Lopes led the Tar Heels with a 2-0 record at 141 pounds, registering victories against Wisconsin and UNC Greensboro. Thomas Scotton and Zac Bennett both won two of the three bouts they competed in with the two losses coming to Wisconsin wrestlers ranked in the top two nationally.
In Carolina’s first contest of the day, the Tar Heels jumped out to a 18-9 lead behind a pin by Zac Bennett and victories by Thomas Ferguson, Ben Brooks, Mike Rappo and Rocco Wellek. The Mocs rallied to tie it at 18 going into the finale, the 165-pound match. Scotton came through for the Tar Heels, logging a 9-4 victory to clinch the 21-18 win for UNC.
