Men’s Wrestling Finishes Big Weekend in Georgia and North Carolina
NEWPORT NEWS – The Apprentice School men’s wrestling team has completed its weekend of action as the team was split between the Lucha Open near Atlanta and a quad match at East Carolina Saturday. Starting with the Lucha Open, the Builders sent 10 wrestlers to the Peach State for competition. In the Gold Division, Ethan Baker and Caleb Hartung each notched a win in their competitions. Baker, wrestling at 174, started his tournament with a quick pinfall of St. Thomas’s Daniel Garlin before falling in a pair of close decisions. Hartung had a long first match of the day at 285 but finished it off with a pinfall in the final minute of the match. He then fell in a close decision to Life’s Nate Glass before a major decision loss in the consolation bracket.
In the Silver Division, Lucas Vannostrand saw a lot of action at 125, wrestling in six matches. He started the day with a pair of pinfalls late in the first period of both opening matches. After losing his third match of the day, he bounced back with a 9-0 major decision win over Cumberland’s JaRi Campbell and a pinfall over Montreat’s Ayden Goodman. His tournament came to a close with a tough 6-4 decision loss.

Nicolosi voted Wrestler of the Week
GREENVILLE, S.C. (Nov. 26) – After producing a 5-1 record in the 165-weight class last week, University of Mount Olive freshman Brent Nicolosi was selected the Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Nicolosi earned a conference dual win over Lincoln Memorial and finished on the podium at the Life Open. On Wednesday night, he produced a second-round fall over Julian Smith in a 46-9 win versus Lincoln Memorial in Conference Carolinas action.
Over the weekend, Nicolosi registered a 4-1 mark to place second overall in the 165-gold division. Following an opening-round bye, he earned back-to-back victories via tech fall over Grayson Pennison of Williams Baptist and Eli Clemmons of Cumberland. Nicolosi continued forward with a 7-5 decision against Trent Mahoney of King before a 4-1 decision in the semifinals over Reese Jones of Life. Bramhall named Wrestler of the Week
GREENVILLE, S.C. (Nov. 26) – For a fourth-straight week, the University of Mount Olive women’s wrestling program claimed the Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week, as sophomore Savannah Bramhall earned the honor on Tuesday afternoon.
A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Bramhall earned a first-round fall over Shonticia Taft in the 160-weight class, as the Trojans improved to 3-0 in Conference Carolinas action following a 45-5 win over Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday night.

Patrick Kennedy, a longtime Hawk and the presumed backup this year at 174 pounds, emerged as the unexpected star of the night with his 19-4 technical fall against his former teammate Aiden Riggins. Though Riggins isn’t ranked, Kennedy’s offense was a positive sign for Iowa and elevated the Black and Gold back over Iowa State in a dual that went back and forth through the first five matches.
All-American Stephen Buchanan also notched bonus points in his 10-0 match against No. 20 Christian Carroll at 197 pounds for Iowa. His performance officially sealed the dual for the Hawks and marked Iowa’s last win of the night as Iowa State’s No. 4 Yonger Bastida beat Iowa’s No. 13 Ben Kueter 7-2 in a fun, competitive match at heavyweight. Bastida and Kueter highlighted what heavyweight athleticism looks like though, and they will both be podium threats this March.
The Hawkeyes also picked up a ranked win from NCAA finalist Drake Ayala 11-7 against Evan Frost at 133 pounds and All-American Kyle Parco 4-3 in a contentious match against No. 7 Anthony Echemendia at 149 ponds.
The biggest blow to the Hawks though came one weight later when NCAA finalist Jacori Teemer had to injury default out of his bout against No. 10 Paniro Johnson following what looked to be a hamstring injury. The Cyclones earned six team points from that result, putting them ahead 12-6 at the halfway point in the dual before All-American Mikey Caliendo notched a win at 165 pounds 12-7 over Connor Euton and Kennedy, as previously mentioned, lit up the scoreboard at 174 pounds.

NCAA No. 1 Iowa punches seven into semifinals at intense Missouri Valley Women’s Open
MARSHALL, Mo. – NCAA No. 1 Iowa powered seven wrestlers into the semifinals after a long day of intense action at the Missouri Valley Women’s Open on Friday.
Semifinalists from Iowa included Rianne Murphy (103), Emilie Gonzalez (110), Ava Bayless (110), Brianna Gonzalez (117), Emily Frost (131), Naomi Simon (180) and Katja Osteen (207). Brianna Gonzalez is the only 2023 Missouri Valley Open champion to qualify for the semifinals.
The Missouri Valley Open featured 28 nationally ranked teams from the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA and USports in Canada, as well as a variety of athletes from the Open level, college clubs and high school individuals. One weight class was completed on Friday, the 235-pound weight class, which is not contested at the NCAA and NAIA levels. Karla Padilla of NAIA No. 4 University of the Cumberlands pinned Brianna Staebler of NAIA No. 7 Campbellsville in 2:01 to claim the gold medal.
NCAA No. 4 Grand Valley State has four semifinalists, Rayana Sahagun (103), Sage Mortimer (110), Aspen Blasko (124) and Sabrina Nauss (180).
Three unattached high school stars reached the semifinals: Makennah Craft of Ohio (103), Sierra Chiesa of Pennsylvania (124) and Bella Williams of Oklahoma (131).
Unattached Senior-level wrestlers in the semifinals are Xochitl Mota-Pettis of Texas (138), Valerie Hamilton of Illinois (145), Aleah Nickel of Canada (145) and Destiny Rodriguez, unattached from McKendree (160).

Duke’s Barket Tabbed ACC Wrestler of the Week
DURHAM, N.C. —Following a weekend where he secured four victories, Duke redshirt sophomore Connor Barket was tabbed ACC Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the league office.
Seeing action at heavyweight, Barket went 4-0 against eighth-ranked Michigan, 23rd-ranked Utah Valley, American and Presbyterian to move to 13-2 on the season. Barket is riding a nine-match winning streak heading into the Thanksgiving break.
On the weekend, Barket opened with an 8-5 decision over Michigan’s Ira Jenkins and then collected a 5-0 victory versus Emmanual Ulrich of American.
Barket then posted the first ranked victory of his collegiate career as he collected a late escape and takedown to come-from-behind to defeat 33rd-ranked Jack Forbes of Utah Valley. With a fall at 4:08, Barket closed the weekend with a win over Presbyterian’s Morvens Saint Jean.
The honor for Barket is the second of his collegiate career as he received ACC Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 23 of last year.

#6 Wolfpack Takes Care of Utah Valley to Improve to 5-0
RALEIGH – Capped off by Isaac Trumble’s dominant technical fall to close the match, sixth-ranked NC State wrestling claimed six of 10 bouts to defeat Utah Valley 23-16 at home Saturday night.
Starting off at 125 pounds, No. 13 Vince Robinson put NC State on the board first for the third dual-match in a row when defeated Bridger Ricks 5-2. He remains undefeated at 11-0 on the season with five of those wins from duals.
Although known to be the guy at 125, Jakob Camacho stepped back into the lineup weighing in at 133 for the meeting with Utah Valley. The redshirt-senior unfortunately got injured in the second period and had to default to his opponent, giving the visiting Wolverines a 6-3 lead.
In the first ranked matchup of the night, seventh-ranked Kai Orine faced 21st-ranked and 2022 NCAA Qualifer Haiden Drury in the 141 weight class. The two closed out the first two periods scoreless, although, Drury was able to rack up almost two minutes of riding time from being on top all of the second period. 30 seconds into the third he got the escape to lead 1-0 over Orine. With time slipping away, Orine gave up a takedown to drop his match 0-5 and push Utah Valley’s lead to 9-3.
While the Pack were trailing 3-9 on their home mat, Koy Buesgens in the lineup at 149 pounds was able to provide a spark of energy to his team with a gritty 12-3 major decision. Buesgens did an excellent job capitalizing on his defense and then reattacking which gave him a 6-1 control through the first three minutes. His athleticism continued to show as he displayed a flashy two point reversal in the second and then a slick shot in the third to boost his win.
Eighth-ranked Ed Scott handed NC State the 11-7 lead when he followed up with a major decision of his own in the 157 weight class. Scott remained controlled the scoreboard his entire bout and only let his opponent come within one point to him before he took off to win 19-11.

Big Red Claim Third-Straight Navy Classic Title
Four Huskers claimed individual titles at the 2024 Navy Classic on Saturday, pushing Nebraska to win its third-straight Navy Classic team title with 150 points. Caleb Smith (125), Brock Hardy (141), Antrell Taylor (157) and Silas Allred (187) won their weight classes outright, while Bubba Wilson and Christopher Minto (165) went no contest in the final to share the championship.
Ten of the 14 competing Huskers placed, with Lenny Pinto (174) and Harley Andrews (HWT) finishing second, Alan Koehler (125) and freshman Camden McDanel (197) finishing in fourth. Freshman LJ Araujo (174) came in fifth in his first Navy Classic.
At 125, No. 3 Smith went 5-0, with two ranked wins to claim his back-to-back Navy Classic championship. The Husker used a first round fall, a major dec., and three decisions to defend his title. At 141, No. 4 Hardy faced a top-10 matchup in the final round, but defeated Navy’s Joshua Koderhandt with a 10-3 decision to finish 5-0. With the win, Hardy successfully defended his 141 title for the third season in a row.
Despite the weight class change, No. 3 Taylor still took the title, this time at 157. Taylor went 4-0, with two tech., falls, a pin, and a sudden-victory decision to claim the championship. At 165, the final came down to two Huskers, Minto and Wilson. The pair’s bout went no contest, both wrestlers sharing the title for first. Allred took his second Navy Classic title, after also winning at 197 in the 2022-23 season. No. 5 Allred led a dominant tournament campaign, finishing 5-0 with two pins, one tech., fall, and two major decisions.
Behind the Huskers, Oregon State (130.5 pts) and Navy (103), claimed second and third respectively. Up next, the Huskers take on the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas. The tournament, Dec. 6-7, will feature 31 programs and is set to be streamed on FloWrestling. The Big Red look to improve on their second-place finish from the 2023-24 season.

No. 25 UNC Wrestling Splits Matchups With Greensboro, No. 16 Illinois
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 25th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels split their Monday night duals against Greensboro College and No. 16 Illinois, inside Carmichael Arena.
In the opener, the Tar Heels defeated Greensboro College, 47-3.
Carolina had nine victories in the match: four falls, two technical falls, one major decision, one decision and a forfeit.
The group of Max Martin (133), Cade Tenold (174), Aidan Schlett (197) and Nolan Neves (285) earned falls in the dual win. Marco Tocci (125) and Omaury Alvarez (165) cruised to technical falls, as Marcus Murabito (184) collected the major decision.
At 149 pounds, Cullen Kane earned a hard-fought decision for the Tar Heels, with Joey Showalter (157) on the receiving end of the Pride’s forfeit.
For the second-straight week, the Tar Heels squared off with a ranked Big Ten opponent in Chapel Hill, as 16th-ranked Illinois ended the top-25 matchup victorious, 24-14.
Against the Fighting Illini, Spencer Moore (125), Lachlan McNeil (149), Sonny Santiago (157) and Gavin Kane (184) collected wins for the Tar Heels.
To begin the match, Moore used six takedowns to earn the 20-5 major decision over Illinois’ Caelan Riley. At 141, with the match tied 1-1 in overtime, McNeil powered his way to the takedown, clipping the Fighting Illini’s No. 10 Kannon Webster, 4-1. In the ensuing match at 157 pounds, No. 27 Sonny Santiago collected his first ranked win of the year, with a convincing 10-3 decision against No. 20 Jason Kraisser.

Virginia Tech’s win over Missouri creates slight movement in Top 10; Steveson’s pending return bolsters Minnesota
Manheim, Pennsylvania – One dual meet and one personnel change created the most movement in the most recent NWCA Division I Men’s Wrestling Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.
No. 7 Virginia Tech’s 23-10 win over then-No. 8 Missouri was the lone Top 10 dual of last week. The loss caused Missouri to slip one spot to No. 9 this week. The Hokies (2-0) stayed put.
The return of two-time NCAA champion and Tokyo Olympic champion Gable Steveson to the Minnesota lineup this coming week buoyed the Gophers to No. 10, up two spots. Steveson’s return could be as soon as Sunday when Minnesota (1-0) hosts Campbell. On the mat, the Gophers beat Bucknell 35-3 to open the dual meet portion of the schedule.
Top-ranked Penn State (1-0) opened its dual season with a 41-3 home win against Drexel, giving the Nittany Lions their 56th consecutive dual meet victory. The streak currently stands as the 13th best all-time in college history and among major college divisions, ranks sixth. Penn State’s longest win streak in school history came from 2015-2019 with 60 dual wins in a row.
The David Taylor era at Oklahoma State opened up with a trip out west. The Cowboys (2-0) opened up with a 38-6 win over Utah Valley before taking down No. 24 Oregon State 36-3.
Nebraska (3-0) picked up a pair of wins in North Carolina. The Huskers defeated Campbell 40-6 before heading up the road to Chapel Hill and dispatching No. 25 North Carolina 34-3. Ohio State (2-0) opened with a pair of home wins. The Buckeyes beat Chattanooga 36-6 and Edinboro 40-4.
Fifth-ranked NC State (4-0) was strong with three wins on the week. The Wolfpack first beat Appalachian State 34-12 before besting No. 17 Rutgers 23-14 and Princeton 34-6 at the Journeymen Jersey Jostle in Toms River, New Jersey on Sunday.
Michigan, which jumped over Missouri into the eighth spot this week, opened up the home schedule with a 28-9 win over Columbia.
Elsewhere in the Top 25, then-No. 11 Iowa State beat Navy 29-9, No. 13 South Dakota State blanked Division II Augustana (S.D.) 49-0, No. 15 Stanford beat Cal Poly 33-12 outdoors in what’s now a non-conference dual.
