Penn State wrestlers have near perfect night during NWCA All-Star Classic
Rec Hall is a venue where fans get to see Penn State’s stars shine. On Tuesday night, fans inside Rec Hall got to see some of college wrestling’s top athletes during the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic — and they weren’t disappointed. The Nittany Lions had Shayne Van Ness (149 pounds), Carter Starocci (174), Bernie Truax (184), Aaron Brooks (197) and Greg Kerkvliet all hit the mat as part of the 28 wrestlers that competed. The quintet went a combined 4-1 on the evening, while dazzling the pro-Penn State crowd. “It was real loud. It was a lot of fun. It got me excited,” Van Ness said. “It got me smiling. I love big crowds. It’s awesome. I think you’ll see that a lot more this year (smiling), whether it’s here or anywhere just because I’m enjoying what I do. Penn State goes 4 for 5 to headline All-Star Classic
The No. 1 Nittany Lions put on a show for their home crowd, earning victories at 149 pounds from Shayne Van Ness and at 174, 197 and 285 pounds from Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks and Greg Kerkvliet, respectively, by bonus. This is a team that is not just expecting to win another NCAA title in March but to bury anyone that gets in its way.
Van Ness’ win over Arizona State’s Kyle Parco kicked off the Nittany Lions’ winning ways, as he topped the Sun Devil for the second time in his career, notching a 5-1 victory just six months after beating Parco 7-2 at NCAAs. Penn State’s Van Ness is currently ranked No. 2 in the country behind Nebraska’s Ridge Lovett, though Van Ness will get his shot at the 2022 NCAA finalist Lovett on Feb. 18 when the Huskers come to town. Reversal Gives McGonagle Overtime Win at NWCA All-Star Classic
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Lehigh junior Connor McGonagle won a 7-5 overtime decision over Sam Latona of Virginia Tech Tuesday night at 133 pounds at the NWCA All-Star Classic at Penn State’s Rec Hall. McGonagle scored the first takedown of the bout, and reversed Latona in the first half of the tiebreakers to knock off the sixth-ranked Hokie in the annual exhibition showcase.
McGonagle opened the scoring by countering a Latona shot and getting behind for a three-point takedown near the midway point of the opening period. Latona escaped 32 seconds later as McGonagle led 3-1 after one period. Latona chose bottom in the second period and escaped before McGonagle could go over a minute of advantage time as McGonagle led 3-2 after two periods.

Hertel Earns Win over Defending NCAA II Champion at NWCA Classic; First NCAA III Wrestler to Win at Event
Nolan Hertel is the top-ranked wrestler in NCAA Division III at 157-pounds.
University Park, Pa. – University of Wisconsin-La Crosse senior Nolan Hertel of Marshfield (H.S.) earned a 3-1 victory in two tiebreak periods at 157-pounds over Nick Novak of St. Cloud State University (Minn.) Tuesday night at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic at Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University.
Hertel is the first National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III wrestler to earn a win at the NWCA All-Star Classic. “An amazing opportunity and the chance to represent UW-La Crosse and NCAA Division III,” said Hertel. “We had to show the nation how tough we are in La Crosse.”
The NWCA All-Star Classic began in 1967 and was a staple of the college season until 2017. No. 19 Men’s Wrestling hosts Mat-Town Open; Henson crowned champion
The No. 19 Lock Haven men’s wrestling team was in action Sunday at home as the Bald Eagles hosted the Mat-Town Open. Wyatt Henson led the way with a title at 141 pounds.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The No. 19 Lock Haven men’s wrestling team returned to action today (Sunday, Nov. 26) as the Bald Eagles hosted the 2023 Mat-Town Open I Tournament in Thomas Fieldhouse, and it was once again Wyatt Henson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg) who led the way for The Haven.
In what has become tradition, today’s tournament marked the first home competition of the season for Lock Haven. In all, 16 Bald Eagles hit the mats today – competing both attached and unattached.
Ranked No. 25 nationally at 141 pounds, Henson went a perfect 4-0 with two tech falls today. For Henson, the reigning Mid-American Conference (MAC) Wrestler of the Week, it marks his second straight tournament title after the Bald Eagle won gold last week (Nov. 18) at Millersville’s Shorty Hitchcock Classic. Henson was one of four place-winners for the Bald Eagles today.
Isaac Reid (Saltsburg, Pa./Kiski), ranked No. 29 nationally, was second overall at 285 pounds. Reid opened the day with a tech fall and was 2-0 before he defaulted out of the tournament, and finished the day 2-1 overall.
Ty Linsenbigler (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) was third at 149 after going an impressive 5-1 on the day. He recorded a pair of victories by way of major decision. Missouri moves up to No. 3; Penn State, NC State remain atop Coaches Poll
Stanford enters Top 25 for first time this season.
Manheim, Pennsylvania – Coming off a season-opening win over then-No. 21 Arizona State, Missouri jumped to No. 3 in the most recent NWCA Division I Men’s Wrestling Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.
The Tigers drew over 3,200 fans to the Hearnes Center for their first dual of the season. Penn State, which has yet to wrestle a dual this season, remained the unanimous No. 1, while NC State (7-0) remained second. Iowa (2-0), which opened up with another sellout home dual victory over then-No. 16 Oregon State 25-11, slid back to No. 4. Ohio State (4-0) remained fifth after a pair of weekend road wins.
NC State won three duals over the weekend, beating Binghamton, Army West Point and Sacred Heart in the Capital Region of New York. Ohio State blanked two opponents – Columbia 49-0 and Hofstra 51-0 – in a swing through the New York City metro area.
Michigan (2-0) also headed east, beating Columbia 33-6 and Rider 27-14. No. 7. Cornell opened up its dual season with a 48-3 win over Sacred Heart. Iowa State (3-0) jumped two spots to No. 8 after shutting out then-No. 18 Wisconsin 42-0. Virginia Tech improved to 2-1 after an exciting 19-12 win at then-No. 13 Rutgers on Friday. Despite the victory, the Hokies slid two spots to No. 10 this week.
Pittsburgh (4-1) leapt over Lehigh to come in at No. 19 this week after besting the Mountain Hawks 24-17. Two days after helping NC State win a dual against Army, Trent Hidlay secured a spot in the Olympic Trials by winning the Bill Farrell International
The NC State Wolfpack has been busy since their season opened on November 1. The Pack has started out a perfect 7-0 in duals, outscoring its foes 287-30. In those duals, NC State’s current 10 starters went a combined 48-3 in their matches. Starting the season at #3 in the preseason NWCA Coaches Poll, the Pack has moved up to #2 behind only Penn State.
While it has been a very busy three weeks for NC State — all the duals have been on the road and the first home dual is not until January — one Wolfpack wrestler will be looking forward to some well-deserved time off over the Thanksgiving weekend. “We’ve got a lot of miles in the last few weeks,” head coach Pat Popolizio said. “This month of November was really for getting everybody settled into their weight class and getting guys a lot of minutes on the mat. It was good, and it was healthy, but a couple of days away are much needed.”
“No doubt, everybody needs a bit of a break right now. It wasn’t all the matches, it was the travel the last few weekends.”

#5 Daniel Zepeda Commits To NC State, Embraces Huge Junior Year Challenge
Daniel Zepeda, the #5 commit in the class of 2025, has committed to NC State before competing in one of the nation’s toughest high school weight classes
Daniel Zepeda, the #5 recruit in the class of 2025, has made his college commitment. The Gilroy, California middleweight will be heading to NC State after finishing his high school career in 2025. Zepeda’s college commitment isn’t the only decision he’s made though, he’s planning to move up to 150 lbs for his junior season to enter a CIF bracket that could be the toughest high school weight in the country.
Zepeda is a highly coveted recruit. He followed up a Fargo finals performance this summer with a Who’s Number One victory over Bo Bassett at 138 lbs this fall. He won a state title in the ever-challenging single-class California State Championships this spring as well.

U.S. wins men’s Greco-Roman title at U15 Pan Am Championships with seven champions
PANAMA CITY, Panama – The United States closed out the U15 Pan American Championships for boys with a team title in Greco-Roman, led by seven individual champions and 10 medalists. The 10 U.S. boys who compete in men’s freestyle on Friday also wrestled in Greco-Roman on Saturday, with equal effectiveness. Claiming individual Greco-Roman gold medals for the USA were Chase Karenbauer (38 kg), Keegan Bassett (41 kg), Christopher Grossman (52 kg), Austin Collins (57 kg), Cooper Rowe (68 kg) and Isai Fernandez (76 kg)., and Evan Perez (85 kg). Collins was awarded the Golden Boot as the Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman. He scored three technical falls and a pin on Saturday.
The same seven U.S. wrestlers also won gold medals in freestyle on Friday, making each of them double champions for the U15 Pan American Championships. On Saturday, in the Greco-Roman tournament, winning a silver medal was Rocco Cassioppi at 48 kg. Capturing bronze medals were Eli Herring at 44 kg and Travis Cardenas at 62 kg. The Golden Boot as the Outstanding Wrestler in men’s freestyle was awarded to Cooper Rowe of the United States, the champion at 68 kg.

U.S. women add four golds on Saturday, claim U15 Pan Am team title with nine champs
PANAMA CITY, Panama – The United States added four gold medals and a bronze medal on Saturday, finishing the two-day women’s freestyle competition at the U15 Pan American Championships with the team title. Team USA ended up with nine champions and a bronze medalist, dominating the team standings with 240 points. (The maximum amount of points is 250). Ecuador was second with 120 points and Puerto Rico was third with 93 points. Five women’s weights were held on Friday and five on Saturday. Winning gold medals on Saturday were Haley Delgado (42 kg), Kayla Batres (50 kg), Amaya Hinojosa (58 kg) and Violette Lasure (66 kg). Lasure pinned all four of her opponents. Delgado, Batres and Hinojosa all won three matches on the day. Larkin shines while ASU struggles
Freshman Kaleb Larkin did not compete with the team as he traveled to the Bill Farrell Memorial International tournament. Although Larkin was a long shot in the 65kg division, the Sun Devil made a run for the title and earned qualification for the 2024 Olympic Trials.
Larkin’s final match was one-sided too, defeating Matthew Kolodzik 16-5. On the other hand, the Sun Devils fell with a mixed lineup to Missouri 39-6. The Sun Devils did not wrestle Richard Figueroa, Jacori Teemer or Cohlton Schultz. Instead, Julian Chlebove and Kyle Parco were the only winners.
Cal Poly sends six to the Roadrunner podium
Cal Poly remained close to home as the Mustangs competed in the Roadrunner Open. Six Mustangs placed, including freshman Daschle Lamer winning at 174 pounds. Lamer’s second college experience included a pin, tech fall, major decision and decision for the title.
Cole Jackson finished second at heavyweight. Jackson dropped his second match to Bakersfield’s Jake Andrews 4-2. Yet, he responded with three wins for a silver medal. Blake Hinrichsen pinned two opponents for a fourth-place finish while Tyler Hodges tech falled two opponents for fourth.
Koda Holeman and Luke Meyer got fifth at 125 and heavyweight.
CSU Bakersfield showcases Roadrunner Open
The Roadrunners had four wrestlers showcase their skills at the Roadrunner Open. Heavyweight Jake Andrews and 165-pounder Guillermo Escobedo went undefeated. The Eagles hosted Utah Valley to a dual on Thursday night. They followed that up with a Saturday at the Navy Classic. In their dual #14 Maida, #31 Jarrell, and Nies all won. Jarrell picked up a fall in the only bonus point victory for American. At the Navy Classic, they brought a limited roster to help keep a majority of starters well-rested for the long season. Top-15 Showdown Goes to Gophers in 19-13 Win over South Dakota State
MINNEAPOLIS – No. 13 Minnesota (4-0) opened its home season with a 19-13 comeback victory over No. 12 South Dakota State (3-1) Sunday at Maturi Pavilion. It’s the second straight season that the Golden Gophers have opened the year with four straight dual wins. Prior to that, it had not happened since the 2014-15 campaign. South Dakota State won the first two matches of the dual Saturday as No. 22 Tanner Jordan won a top-25 matchup with No. 6 sixth-year senior Patrick McKee at 125 pounds, 9-4. Derrick Cardinal then topped freshman Tyler Wells, 5-3, at 133 pounds.
The Gophers got on the board at 141 pounds behind redshirt sophomore Vance VomBaur. Facing Caleb Gross, VomBaur scored a first-period takedown and added an escape in the second stanza. He released Gross in the third and emerged with a 4-2 win to improve to 6-1 on the season, 6-0 lifetime against the Jackrabbits and 3-0 versus Gross.
Minnesota evened the match at 6-6 when No. 19 redshirt sophomore Drew Roberts prevailed over Alek Martin, 7-1, at 149 pounds. Leading 3-0 after the first, Roberts started on bottom in period two and escaped midway through. He extended the lead to 6-1 with a takedown in the final 10 seconds.
A turning point in the match came a top-15 dual at 157 pounds between No. 13 sixth-year senior Michael Blockhus and No. 11 Cael Swensen. The third period started with Swensen starting on bottom and leading 3-1. Blockhus released him and battled to tie it up, coming through with just 30 seconds remaining to send the match to overtime at 4-4. Iowa Wins 19th Straight Over Iowa State in Memorable Fashion
All eyes in the wrestling world were trained solely on Ames, Iowa. No, really. That phrase can be overstated in many cases; however, with the Thanksgiving holiday only four days away, the wrestling calendar was sparse. #7 Iowa traveled to Ames to take on #8 Iowa State live on ESPN’s main channel in the only dual scheduled for Sunday’s late-afternoon slot. The stage was set for Iowa State to snap a losing streak that dated back to 2004. A sellout crowd was on hand to watch a Cyclone team that featured four wrestlers ranked in the top-eight and appeared to be the deepest in head coach Kevin Dresser’s time in Ames. While Iowa led 9-6 at halftime, Iowa State knocked off a pair of top-ten wrestlers and was favored in the back half of the dual.
The only problem for Iowa State was nobody told the Hawkeyes that it was supposed to be Iowa State’s day. Iowa briefly trailed after NCAA champion David Carr posted a 16-4 major decision for the Cyclones at 165 lbs. The Hawkeyes would win the next four bouts to lock up the dual and their stranglehold on this in-state rivalry. Hawkeye head coach Tom Brands developed a winning blueprint by doing some lineup shuffling for the day. Last time out, true freshman Gabe Arnold took out a former All-American from Oregon State; Travis Wittlake. Conventional wisdom may have sent Arnold out to face redshirt freshman MJ Gaitan, in a match that likely would favor the Hawkeyes. HAWKEYES WIN 19TH STRAIGHT AGAINST CYCLONES
AMES, Iowa – The fourth-ranked University of Iowa men’s wrestling team won six matches in an 18-14 victory over No. 8 Iowa State on Sunday afternoon in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series dual at Hilton Coliseum. It was the Hawkeyes’ 19th straight victory over Iowa State. The Hawkeyes won all six matches by decision. “It’s good, credit our guys” said head coach Tom Brands. “Onward. Competitors focus on what they can control. We’ve got guys that have tremendous scoring ability and I’m not sure that showed out there. We got beat up in the stall call department, so we have a lot of work to do. That’s where I am at. We are moving forward.”
Iowa got the dual started as Drake Ayala won via a 7-2 decision over Kysen Terukina. After a scoreless first period Ayala notched a takedown in the second and third to pull away. The Hawkeyes and Cyclones went back and forth over the next several weights. Evan Frost got the victory at 133 pounds for Iowa State over Brody Teske. A scramble in the third period led to a takedown with a little over a minute left and four near fall points with 29 seconds left in the match. Real Woods and Anthony Echemendia went to Sudden Victory tied 1-1 before Woods ended the match with a takedown. “The intensity was high, but it wasn’t as high as I’d like it to be,” said Woods. “I wrestle at a much higher pace and there are adjustments to be made. AMES — Iowa State’s 149-pounder Casey Swiderski shook his head. His head coach, Kevin Dresser, took the blame. And in the aftermath of an excruciatingly narrow 18-14 loss to No. 4 Iowa Sunday at Hilton Coliseum, the eighth-ranked Cyclones felt like they’d missed out on a prime opportunity to end their 19-game skid in the Cy-Hawk dual meet. “I hope people understand that we’re here, for sure,” said the 14th-ranked Swiderski, who beat No. 9 Victor Voinovich, 6-3, in his match before a sellout crowd as well as ESPN’s national TV audience. “Come to Iowa State. Iowa and Iowa State will battle Sunday in front of a national TV audience in a dual meet that’s expected to be filled with fireworks.
ESPN will be showing the Iowa-Iowa State dual in Ames to a national television audience on Sunday afternoon, the first time a regular-season dual has appeared on the network. It’s a chance, Iowa associate head coach Terry Brands said during Wednesday’s media availability, to showcase the sport, but it’s going to be up to the two teams to put on a show.
“The promotions of the sport come down to the action, an entertaining style of wrestling,” Brands said. “Controlling the things you can control, the center of the mat, the things that make wrestling exciting. The style that brings in fans and makes people stay in tune and watch it. So it’s not really us being on ESPN that’s going to bring awareness to us. It’s going to be the product on the mat, how that action, how that attitude, how the fight shines through up and down the lineup on both sides.” The rivalry between the Hawkeyes and Cyclones has been quite one-sided in recent years. Iowa has won 18 consecutive duals in the series and holds a 68-16-2 advantage in the all-time series. Brands said the storied history of the two programs, and the sport within the state, helps drive the interest in Sunday’s dual as well.

Iowa State is looking for its first victory against Iowa since 2004 and the Cyclone wrestlers are riding high after a 42-0 win against Wisconsin.
There’s no need for hype. No need for hoopla. When Iowa State meets Iowa on the wrestling mat Sunday at 2 p.m., a raucous atmosphere will form organically for a highly-anticipated Cy-Hawk dual meet that should be tight, intense and brimming with plot twists.
“We don’t need to tell anybody in the wrestling world how big the Cy-Hawk opportunity is for both schools,” said Dresser, who won a national title at Iowa in 1986 and is in his seventh season with the Cyclones. “I made a comment (after last weekend’s 42-0 win over Wisconsin) that when you put two really good products together, you get a big-tip dual meet, and I think that’s what’s gonna happen Sunday. It’s gonna be a big stage. I know the state of Iowa’s excited about it. Our guys are excited about it. (Hawkeye head) coach (Tom) Brands’ guys are gonna be excited about it. Montevallo Defeats Midway 27-16 in Inaugural Home Wrestling Match
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo Wrestling team defeated Midway University, 27-16, in the program’s inaugural home match.
In an electric environment of nearly 1,900 wrestling fans, the Falcons showed out in what was a historic moment in Montevallo’s history. Colt Brown started the match off with electricity for the Falcons as he defeated Midway’s Andrew Vogler by tech fall, 19-3 in 5:45 for the program’s first win inside Trustmark Arena. With a forfeit in the 133 matchup, the Falcons took an early 11-0 lead over the visiting Eagles. Midway rattled off three consecutive wins before Carson Freeman won by major decision over Jabril Williams in the 165 contest, 11-2.
In the 174, Derek Hussey pulled off a tightly contested win by decision, 5-3.
Jeffery Tubbs got the Falcon faithful going in the 184 bout with a pin in 1:26 over Michael Colligan.
Mark Pennison capped off the quartet of consecutive Falcon victories with a hard-fought win over David Emfinger, 15-13.

#1 Wrestling Starts and Finishes Strong to Take Down UNC Pembroke
PEMBROKE, N.C. – The top-ranked Lander Wrestling team got three gritty decisions to start the match against UNC Pembroke and closed with three straight bonus point victories in the last three bouts to seal a 31-9 victory over the Braves in front of a rowdy crowd at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court on Thursday evening. The win is the Bearcats’ second straight in the series and also the second straight time they held the Braves under ten points as they won last year’s matchup 30-7. Lander improves to 2-0 overall and in Conference Carolin as action while Pembroke drops to 1-1 overall and in conference.
James Joplin, ranked second in the NWCA poll, would set the tone early on as he would get a second period reversal and a third period take down to grit out a 6-4 decision over #11 Logan Seliga to give Lander the 3-0 lead.

Ghadiali named conference wrestler of the week
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After starting the season 7-0, Campbell heavyweight Taye Ghadialihas been named the SoCon Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
The No. 15 ranked heavyweight according to Intermat, Ghadiali earned his fourth pin of the season at last Friday’s Battle in the Barn against Kevin Zimmer of Wyoming, recording the fall in 3:47.
“I just want to say I’m grateful for being picked for the Wrestler of the Week,” Ghadiali said. “I want to give all the glory to God, and I’m thankful for being able to represent Campbell. It’s a long season, and I need to keep grinding and putting in the work and never settling.”
Ghadiali has recorded bonus point victories in all seven of his matches to this point in the season. He began the season pinning Lucas Stoddard of Army in 3:47 at the Battle at Liberty. He was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler Belt by UFC Fight Pass for his performance at the event.
The Campbell heavyweight continued his hot start to the season by going 4-0 at the Southeast Open, winning the heavyweight open division. His four victories consisted of two tech falls and two pins. He began the day with tech fall victories over VMI’s B. Jackson (4:04) and Zane Lanham of Life University (5:16).
Ghadiali pinned his opponents in the semifinals and finals of the Southeast Open, both of which ranked in the top-25. First, he pinned #21 B. McDermott of Oregon State in 6:26. Ghadiali followed that up in the first-place bout by beating #22 M. Wolfgram (WVU) in 3:13.

Iowa moves to the top spot in the NCAA Women’s Coaches Poll
MANHEIM, PA – There is a new top-ranked team in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) NCAA Women’s Wrestling Coaches’ Poll. The University of Iowa sits atop the poll, dropping North Central College to second.
The Hawkeyes top the poll for the first time in program history with 114 points and 13 ranked individuals. North Central has the most individuals ranked with 16, checking in at second. The Cardinals have four individuals ranked at No. 1 while the Iowa has three top-ranked wrestlers. King University is ranked third with 89 points and 12 individuals ranked, while Colorado Mesa University holds steady at fourth with 56 points and eight ranked individuals.
There is a tie for fifth with McKendree University, which is the third team with at least ten ranked individuals with 10. Sacred Heart University has 32 points as well and has eight individuals ranked. Simon Fraser comes into the poll at seventh with 23 points and four ranked individuals.
Lock Haven University and New Jersey City University are eighth and ninth, with 22 and 17 points, respectively. Lock Haven has three ranked individuals, while New Jersey City has two. There is a tie for the final spot in the top 10 with East Stroudsburg University and Aurora University, who both have 16 points. Kentucky H.S.A.A. announces winter sports championship formats, adds girls wrestling and indoor track
At its Board of Control meeting Wednesday, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association approved changes to the swimming and diving championship format and event implementation plans for the inaugural indoor track and field and girls wrestling state championships coming this winter.
The board approved the selection of Russell County High School (Regions 1-3), the University of Louisville (Regions 4-6) and Scott High School (Regions 7-9) as 2024 state first-round sites for swimming. Scott has opened its remodeled pool for this season.
The board also approved the increase of the total number of qualifiers advancing from the regional meets to the first round to 48 per event statewide, including approval of the format structure for those three first-round events. This will result in 24 competitors advancing from the first-round sites to the final round of the state tournament in each event. …
The board approved the 12 existing girls wrestling weight classes recognized by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), as well as a one-year trial of a 13th class of 285 pounds. How The White House’s Decision Not To Include Women Athletes In College Athletic Panel Shows Blind Spot
The White House just hosted a panel of six former college football players to talk about NCAA student-athletes’ issues. The President even attended the event for an hour. Laudable, perhaps, but why in the world would the White House think former football players can speak for all student-athletes, especially the nearly 88,000 women who play Division I sports?
Football players make up only 16% of all of Division I’s more than 188,000 student-athletes.
College Football Makes The Money
When Front Office Sports posted about a “roundtable on college athlete rights” on X (formerly Twitter), a number of posters questioned the absence of women from the group. Others were quick to point out the roundtable was for football players.
Of course, many people seem to equate college sports with football and justify football’s dominance because it earns most of the generated revenue through ticket sales, NCAA conference distributions, donors, concessions, advertising, royalties, sports camps, and media rights. In fact, about 45% of generated revenue in the Power 5 schools comes from broadcasts and bowl games.
Equating football with college sports has already created trouble for precisely this reason. App State’s Cody Bond named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – App State’s Cody Bond has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Nov. 8-14. The selection is made by the league office.
Bond, who is ranked No. 25 at 149 pounds, went 3-0 at the Mountaineer Invitational on Nov. 11, winning the individual title at the event. The Danielsville, Georgia, native began his day with a 20-5 major decision win over Gardner-Webb’s Sam Harris in the quarterfinal round and a 7-6 win against Virginia’s Erik Roggie in the semifinals. In the final, the redshirt senior picked up a 5-4 decision over 31st-ranked Virginia wrestler Michael Gioffre. Bond entered the third period of the final down 4-1 before getting an escape and delivering a three-point takedown with 33 seconds left to get the win.

Crusaders Open Home Slate With Victory over Bluefield State
BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey wrestling team earned a victory in its first home dual match of the season by defeating Bluefield State 56-0 Wednesday evening at the Wheeler Center.
The match was highlighted by Justin Crawford and Mason Kump both earning pins while Brett Balzan won his first collegiate bout at the 125-pound weight class.
Belmont Abbey is now 1-1 on the season following the victory while Wednesday marked the season opener for the Big Blue.
