App State’s Cody Bond named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

Went 3-0 in the Mountaineer Invitational
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – App State’s Cody Bond has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Nov. 8-14. The selection is made by the league office.  
Bond, who is ranked No. 25 at 149 pounds, went 3-0 at the Mountaineer Invitational on Nov. 11, winning the individual title at the event. The Danielsville, Georgia, native began his day with a 20-5 major decision win over Gardner-Webb’s Sam Harris in the quarterfinal round and a 7-6 win against Virginia’s Erik Roggie in the semifinals. In the final, the redshirt senior picked up a 5-4 decision over 31st-ranked Virginia wrestler Michael Gioffre. Bond entered the third period of the final down 4-1 before getting an escape and delivering a three-point takedown with 33 seconds left to get the win.

Crusaders Open Home Slate With Victory over Bluefield State
BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey wrestling team earned a victory in its first home dual match of the season by defeating Bluefield State 56-0 Wednesday evening at the Wheeler Center.
The match was highlighted by Justin Crawford and Mason Kump both earning pins while Brett Balzan won his first collegiate bout at the 125-pound weight class.
Belmont Abbey is now 1-1 on the season following the victory while Wednesday marked the season opener for the Big Blue.

#2 NC State Wrestling Goes 3-0 on the Week in New York

Albany, N.Y. – Second-ranked NC State wrestling picked up two more wins on Friday night to go 3-0 on the week. Friday night started with a 35-9 victory over Binghamton, followed by a 48-5 win over Sacred Heart. 
Deemed the “Pat Pop Tour”, NC State head coach Pat Popolizio got to show off his team’s talent to all three of his former schools in roughly a 24 hour period. Popolizio served as head coach at Binghamton from 2007-12, prior to that he held an assistant coach role for a year each at Army and Sacred Heart in the early 2000s. 
Collectively, The Wolfpack won 17 of 20 bouts over the Bearcats and Pioneers, including three via pins, nine via technical falls, and two via major decisions.  The first match of the night against the Binghamton Bearcats featured an upset for No. 29/27 Dylan Fishback at 184 over No. 9/13 Jacob Nolan. Fishback successfully fought for his low scoring 3-2 decision to prove his growing talent and determination. 
Dylan Reinert stepped onto the mat for the first time this season for the Wolfpack and quickly took care of business. He was able to get a technical fall over his opponent to end his boutearly.

No. 2 Wrestling Defeats Army on the Road
West Point, N.Y. – Second-ranked NC State wrestling defeated Army 34-6 on the road Thursday night to improve to 5-0 on the season.  The Wolfpack won eight of 10 bouts over the Black Knights, including one via a pin, two via technical falls, and four via major decisions.  
Ed Scott started the night off strong at 157lbs with a decision over Army’s Nate Lukez to give the Wolfpack the first lead of the night. AJ Kovacs and Alex Faison suffered the only losses of the night at 165lbs and 174lbs, enabling the Black Knights to take their only lead of the match. After these two losses, NC State wouldn’t lose again after strong energy followed up immediately from Dylan Fishback and then a pin from team leader TrentHidlay. 
Jarrett Trombley held the only close match after this but he came out on top 7-6 from his heated bout over Braden Basile.

VMI Wrestling rolls over Limestone and Marymount

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI wrestling team won both matches Sunday in a tri-match in Cormack Hall, defeating Limestone University 37-6 and Marymount University 49-0 in non-conference competition. 
Sophomore Braxton Lewis, ranked no. 33 this week at 174 pounds by the College Wrestling Report, earned extra points in both of his victories. He pinned his foe from Limestone in 4:54 and quickly earned a 15-0 technical fall against Marymount in just 1:26. 
Sophomore Tony Burke won two matches at 125, one by technical fall and one by major decision.
