USA Wrestling and the NCAA team up to hold Big Ten vs. Big 12 Challenge in freestyle wrestling in Omaha, Neb. on Friday, March 19  :  In a cooperative effort, USA Wrestling and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will present an exhibition men’s freestyle wrestling dual meet as part of the NCAA Fan Festival which is held alongside the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Omaha, Nebraska.  The event is called the Big Ten vs. Big 12 Challenge and will feature wrestlers who competed for universities in these prestigious conferences as undergraduates. The competitors are now pursuing their Olympic dreams in men’s freestyle wrestling.  It will be held at Exhibit Hall C of the Qwest Center Omaha on Friday, March 19 from 1:45 p.m.- 2:30 p.m. Central, as part of the annual NCAA Fan Festival. This is just a short indoor walk north from the Qwest Center Omaha, site of the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.  Admission to the Fan Festival is free, so there will be no charge to watch the men’s freestyle action. For the Big Ten vs. Big 12 Challenge, there will be close to 1,000 seats and many more standing room only viewing opportunities provided matside on a first-come, first-serve basis. In addition, as many as 1,000 fans will be able to watch the dual meet on two large projection screens flanking the main stage within the Fan Festival.  “This is a great concept,” said USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones. “  For those who cannot attend the NCAA Division I Championships in person, the Big Ten vs. Big 12 Challenge will be webcast live on NCAA.com/wrestling and available through TheMat.com, with USA Wrestling’s Jason Bryant calling the action.  This year’s NCAA Fan Festival will feature wrestling exhibit booths, displays, memorabilia, interactive games, souvenirs, food and beverage sales, and a number of other featured events. In addition to the Big Ten vs. Big 12 Challenge, the lineup Friday includes a USA Wrestling autograph session at 3:15 p.m. and the annual Semifinals Preview Show featuring Nate Carr, Scott Casber and Wade Schalles at 4 p.m. Central.
Dwyer Claims Big 12 Championship :  Norman, Okla. – Senior Stephen Dwyer (174) earned the first conference title of his storied Husker career, while senior Craig Brester (197) finished runner-up to lead the Nebraska wrestling team at the 2010 Big 12 Championship on Saturday in Norman, Okla. The Huskers finished the tournament with 32 points and have now automatically qualified four wrestlers for the 2010 NCAA Championships this March 18-20 at Qwest Center Omaha.
Koehnlein Earns At-Large Berth, Brackets Set for 2010 NCAA Championships
Lincoln – Junior 141-pounder Mike Koehnlein was among the 50 at-large selections announced in the final brackets of the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships released Wednesday evening by the NCAA. Koehnlein’s berth for the national tournament increases Nebraska’s representation to five qualifiers who will be competing at Qwest Center Omaha next week.  In addition to Koehnlein, senior Craig Brester (197), senior Stephen Dwyer (174), sophomore Tucker Lane (Hwt) and redshirt freshman Josh Ihnen (184) had previously earned automatic-qualifying spots following Saturday’s Big 12 Championship in Norman, Okla.  A junior college transfer from Westminster, Calif., Koehnlein finished the season with an 18-15 record, including an 11-9 mark in dual action. The 141-pounder cracked the national polls in late February when he earned a No. 20 national ranking from InterMat heading into postseason competition. It will be Koehnlein’s first Division I national championship appearance, although he was a two-time junior college All-American at Cerritos College (Norwalk, Calif.) before transferring to Nebraska.   Qualifying spots were based on Division I winning percentage, RPI and coaches ranking.  The 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships take place next Thursday-Saturday, March 18-20 at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.

Arizona State’s Anthony Robles ready to make run at NCAA title   TheMat.com
Shawn Charles had heard about the legendary work ethic of Arizona State’s Anthony Robles. He heard about the kid who could cover a mile in just eight minutes—on crutches. And about the kid who walked across the wrestling room on his hands. And the kid who—never, under any circumstances—took a shortcut. But when the first-year Arizona State coach saw first-hand just how hard Robles worked, Charles was blown away. The junior from Mesa, Arizona, is ranked third nationally and has compiled a 24-2 record this season after placing fourth in the NCAA tournament as a sophomore. MORE
National Collegiate Wrestling Championships tickets now on sale                NCWA
The 2010 NCWA National Championships will kick off on March 11th, 12th & 13th at the Convocation Arena on the campus of Hampton University in Hampton, Va.   The favored team to win the national title this years is anyone’s guess, but as Marion Military Institute closes out their regular season the coaches poll has them as the top ranked team after winning the National Duals in January. The defeating of other likely team champions including Grand Valley State, Westchester, Central Florida or the defending Champion Apprentice School seems to have opened some eyes.   With over 60 All-American’s likely to qualify to return for a shot at the title this will prove to be the most competitive nationals in over a decade.

Sanderson has Lions cooking on the mat                 Centre Daily Times   Many years ago, a former college wrestling coach was asked about how his team would do that season. His blunt response—put in a little kinder language here—came in cooking terms and that how it would be difficult, given his team’s current ingredients, to make chicken salad. Well, Cael Sanderson must have gone to a different culinary school. The first-year Penn State coach is on par with Emeril Lagasse or Bobby Flay.  Sanderson’s No. 10 Nittany Lions concluded with a 26-16 loss to Minnesota and have a (13-6-1) dual record & (5-3) in the Big Ten. Wrestling program at ODU still maintains its vitality    The Virginian-Pilot   Steve Martin had a vision in 2005, back in his first season as Old Dominion’s coach, of the Ted Constant Center jammed with fans for a Monarchs’ dual meet.
