DAVIDSON, N.C. – For the first time in program history, Davidson wrestling will host a Big 10 team when perennial national power Ohio State visits Belk Arena on Nov. 15 as part of the Wildcats’ 2012-13 season schedule, announced Tuesday by head coach Bob Patnesky. Davidson will face 19 opponents in dual meets and compete in one open tournament. The ‘Cats have seven home dates in Belk Arena, of which three will be tri-meets. “We tried to create a balanced schedule to test ourselves to the best of our abilities,” said Patnesky. The Wildcats will open the wrestling season hosting a tri-meet with regional foes Belmont-Abbey and Spartanburg Methodist on Nov. 4, and then visit another regional rival in nearby Anderson University Nov. 7. NC State’s Wolfpack Open will serve as the final tune-up on Nov. 11 before the Buckeyes visit Belk. “We’re very excited that Ohio State is going to come to Davidson,” said Patnesky. It’s great for our program to have a Big 10 program coming here. We’re working with various departments on campus to make this a big event, as it will help us get people involved with our program.”
Nine members of the Ohio State wrestling team are ranked in the Top 20 of the preseason Amateur Wrestling News individual polls, led by defending national champion Logan Stieber at 133 pounds. As a team, the Buckeyes placed fifth at the NCAA Championships. “It will be a tough test, but the kids are excited for it and we’re up for the challenge,” said Patnesky. The ‘Cats will hit the road for over two months following the Ohio State meet. Davidson will compete in a tri-meet hosted by Sacred Heart, also facing Roger Williams, Dec. 1 before opening the Southern Conference slate Dec. 6 at The Citadel. After a month-long break for exams and the holidays, the Wildcats will return to action with atrip to Pennsylvania to face Franklin & Marshall (Jan. 11) and then Pittsburgh and Lock Haven as part of the Pitt Duals on Jan. 13. Following a conference match at Gardner-Webb Jan. 22, the Wildcats will return to Belk Arena Jan. 27 to host a tri-meet with league-foe VMI and non-conference foe Boston University. The ‘Cats will then host the Davidson Duals on Groundhog Day with recent SoCon addition Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and ACC foe Duke participating. Davidson’s final road dual meet will be at Chattanooga, Feb. 10. The Wildcats will conclude the regular season with home matches against Campbell (Feb. 14), Ohio Northern (Feb. 17) and Appalachian State (Feb. 24). VMI will host the Southern Conference Championships on Mar. 9, where the ‘Cats will look to earn automatic qualifying bids to the NCAA Championships to be held Mar. 21-23 in Des Moines, Iowa. www.DavidsonWildcats.com
