Correll of Topsail wins Roy Heverly Award
Matteson “Tate” Correll of Topsail High School has been named the 2013 Roy Heverly Award winner as the top underclassman this season in eastern North Carolina. The Junior won the 2A 1522 lbs. state championship and finished the season with a (57-3) record. More details will be announced when a date is arranged for the trophy presentation.

2008 – Charlie Millea of Havelock, 2007 – Frank Hickman of Wilmington-Laney H.S., 2006 – Jake O’Laker of Croatan High, 2005 – Eddie Sawyer of Currituck County H.S., 2004 – Bryan Lashomb of Currituck H.S., 2003 – Raymond Jordan of New Bern
The award is named in honor of former state champion Roy Heverly, a 4 time state medallist at West Carteret and three time All-American at The University of North Carolina-Pembroke. The TakeDown Report, an on-line publication promotes amateur wrestling in eastern North Carolina, sponsors these Awards. “These awards recognize the most successful wrestlers in the area each year.” Fleming noted, “It encourages the young men from the teams in the eastern part of the state with another opportunity for fans to realize the hard work, determination and discipline it takes to be a top wrestler,” he added. It has been awarded each year to the top underclassman wrestler in eastern North Carolina for the year.
