STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford wrestling team fell just short of defeating visiting Oregon State, falling 21-14 Saturday, at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal drops to 9-4 overall and to 2-1 in the Pac-12. Oregon State moves to 5-3 on the year and 1-0 in the Pac-12. Oregon State won six of the 10 bouts, including the final three, to defeat the Cardinal. Stanford fell behind 3-0 after redshirt freshman Josh Marchok dropped an 11-4 decision to No. 17 Amarveer Dhesi at heavyweight. He drops to 11-9 on the year and 8-5 in dual competition. Sophomore Evan Silver responded with a 12-3 major decision over Joey Palmer at 125 pounds to give Stanford the 4-3 edge. Ranked 14th nationally, Silver led 6-2 going into the third period. He then tacked on two more takedowns, an escape and 3:00 of riding time. He improves to 16-4 on the year and 6-2 in duals. Redshirt senior no. 12 Ryan Mango added to the Cardinal lead with a 6-3 decision over Drew Van Anrooy at 133 pounds. It marked the 99th career win for Mango, moving him into sole possession of eighth place on Stanford’s career wins list. He is now 18-3 on the year. Sophomore 141-pounder Peter Russo secured a big win for Stanford, holding off Joey Delgado late in the third period for the 6-5 victory. Russo trailed 5-4 going into the third period where he chose to start in the down position. He registered an escape to tie the bout at 5-5 and earned the win with 2:38 of riding time. Oregon State won the next two bouts to cut the Stanford lead to 10-9. Redshirt freshman Jim Wilson, ranked No. 20 nationally, halted the Beavers’ momentum by posting 10-2 major decision over Toney Chay at 165 pounds. The Lodi, Calif., native only led 2-0 heading into the final period, but had racked up plenty of riding time. He notched three takedowns and an escape in the third to score the bonus points for the Cardinal. The Cardinal still led 14-12 with two bouts left, but a fall by Oregon State’s Austin Morehead over Zach Nevills at 184 pounds put the Beavers ahead for good. Stanford hits the road next week, travelling to Duke and North Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 18.
