The fight of their lives As Fike senior Settles aims for a state championship, his coach battles cancer

The afternoon sun peeking through the bay windows of the original auto shop that is now simply the wrestling room at Fike High cast a glare over the mats Tuesday afternoon, almost illuminating the sweat stains from seasons of hard work. On the mat, senior Rae’Sae Settles began his workout as Golden Demons head coach Mike Wickham called out directions. Both of them — one 18 and the other 62 — are facing battles of an entirely different nature. For Settles, the most important two weeks of his life as a wrestler loom. He will enter the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A East Regional tournament this weekend as the top seed at 132 pounds. A top-four finish there will ensure his fourth straight trip to the state championship tournament the following weekend in Greensboro.

TDR Top 12 Plaques Mailed

The 2017 TDR Top 12 Plaques have been mailed to C.B. Aycock, Corinth-Holders, Dixon, Farmville Central, Havelock, Lumberton, Pasquotank, SouthWest Onslow and West Craven have been mailed. The following explanatory note has been mailed with the plaques.
The enclosed ‘TDR Top 12 Award ‘Plaque is for your wrestler. The TakeDown Report has sponsored and publicized the rankings of the “Top 12” wrestlers since the 1997-98 season. Since then we have had the Top 12 publicized and recognize with certificates, in newspapers, on public access TV and on the backs of TDR Top T-Shirts. (We still have a few shirts if anyone would like to purchase them at just $5 each.!) Since 2004-2005 we have started presenting the individually engraved wooden plaques to the top wrestlers at each weight class. Due to some difficult ties in rankings and different divisions we have increased the number of plaques to 35 (2.5 per weight class similar to area all-star teams for other sports)
