Parris, Striggow Named Michigan Captains for 2019-20
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan wrestling head coach Sean Bormet announced Thursday afternoon (Nov. 7) that sophomore Mason Parris and fifth-year senior Jackson Striggow have been named captains for the 2019-20 season. Parris, a native of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, is currently the No. 5-ranked heavyweight in the nation after kicking off his sophomore season with a 5-0 record at the MSU Open last Saturday (Nov. 2). Parris reached the NCAA Round of 12 as a true freshman and led the Wolverines with a 32-9 record and 13 falls. Over the summer, he captured the 125kg freestyle title at the Junior World Championships — in just the third major freestyle tournament of his career. Parris is the first Wolverine sophomore to serve as a team captain since fellow heavyweight Adam Coon in 2014-15. Buffalo Bulls Drop Home Opener to #4 Wisconsin
BUFFALO, NY – It was a tough test for the University at Buffalo wrestling team as it hosted fourth-ranked Wisconsin in its home opener on Thursday night. Dubbed “Mayhem on the Mainstage,” the Bulls dropped the bout, 33-3, to the Badgers at the main stage theater at the UB Center for the Arts. Entering the match, Wisconsin had five wrestlers ranked in the top 20, including three in the top five and all five put on dominant performances. The highlight of the night for the Bulls was the performance of Sam Schuyler in the 197 lb. match. The redshirt-sophomore had a pair of takedowns and an escape to earn a 5-1 decision over Taylor Watkins. ARGOS WIN IN KOMAC’S COLLEGIATE COACHING DEBUT
Great Falls, Mont. – In his first dual as the University of Providence men’s wrestling team interim head coach, Steve Komac led the Argos to victory as they defeated the Montana State-Northern Lights 25-22 in the opening match of the season. “These are the kind of moments that you coach for,” Komac said. “Not just that we got out of here with a win, but these events. The office, the learning curve is hard. But this wrestling stuff, this is fun. That’s why everyone in every sport coaches. The kids are working their tails off every day. TOM’s Campus Visit – The Citadel
By Earl Smith Posted on 11/07/2019
It’s the first weekend of November. As is normally the case this weekend, I’m taking a road trip to cover a college wrestling event. Typically that means dealing with some nasty elements from Mother Nature. Last year during this same weekend, I was in Colorado and saw the remnants of an unexpected snowstorm that blew through the area. Despite being someone who enjoys the breeze in the air, I always have to remind myself to take a jacket of some sort. This year’s trip was different, though. Instead of heading north or west from my home in Virginia, I’m going south. Way south. To the southernmost school on the eastern seaboard that sponsors a DI wrestling program, The Citadel.
Charleston, South Carolina, is the city where The Citadel calls home. Only a few blocks separate the school’s main campus and a palmetto tree-lined strip of downtown Charleston that features dozens of unique restaurants and shops. The city has been named “America’s Most Friendly City” three times in the last decade by two different publications and “World’s Best City” by Travel + Leisure in 2016. History buffs can stroll down The Battery and catch a glimpse of Fort Sumter, the site where the first shots were fired in the Civil War. Of course, if you’re so inclined, rather than strolling down The Battery, you can go for a run and not have to worry about bundling up, since current temperatures in November have hovered around the 70’s. Needless to say, the area surrounding the school is about as unique as you’ll find for a DI wrestling program. Beat the Streets serving Cleveland’s at-risk youth with wrestling passion, prosperity
By BEAT THE STREETS USA | NOV. 07, 2019,
Cleveland is one of eight Beat the Street locations serving at-risk, inner-city communities. With help from USA Wrestling, the Cleveland team has inspired a grass-roots movement that uses wrestling as a platform to change lives.
Sometimes all you need to do is look up. That’s not just a cliché from your wrestling coach about powering into the third period. In a way, those eight words are everything Beat the Streets means to the child who is looking for a safe haven. Whether its New York, Los Angeles or any of its seven other locations, Beat the Streets strives to change lives. With support from USA Wrestling, Beat the Streets continues to do just that. In its first year, 85 kids joined Beat the Streets Cleveland and its initiative to provide underprivileged and children from at-risk communities an opportunity to join a wrestling mentorship program that teaches toughness, discipline and perseverance. The kids, from some of the city’s most violent neighborhoods, come from broken homes. Others struggle in school. To put it simply, they lack the all-American childhood that so many parents strive to provide. Those, however, are just some of the reasons why coach Anthony Spooner can’t step away. “I tell all of my students that there’s a beauty and a struggle,” Spooner said. “Even if you don’t see it, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.” Rest of the story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2019/November/07/BTS-Cleveland-Feature?mc_cid=12fcfb3e66&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
Transition Wrestling website expands college women’s wrestling coverage
BY GARY ABBOTT, USA WRESTLING | NOV. 06, 2019
As women’s wrestling grows across the nation and around the world, there are new voices within the sport emerging in the media space. This year alone, two new websites have been developed covering women’s wrestling, as well as a new podcast. TheMat.com will be publishing updates on these new media outlets as part of its #WomensWednesday series.
Our first feature focuses on Transition Wrestling (https://www.transitionwrestling.com/), a website covering collegiate women’s wrestling. This new media platform was founded by Gabrielle Lord-Klein, a former collegiate wrestler and coach, who has a passion for the sport and the women athletes who participate in it.
About Gabrielle Lord-Klein: A high school wrestler in Wisconsin, Lord-Klein spent two years on the women’s freestyle wrestling team at the U.S. Olympic Education Center (USOEC) at Northern Michigan University. When that program was discontinued, Lord-Klein wrestled for Waldorf University, where she became a two-time WCWA All-American. She was a member of the Junior Pan American Team, as well. After starting her career in financial planning and analysis in California with little connection to the sport, Lord-Klein changed her path and became a graduate assistant coach at Waldorf, where she received her Masters degree. Lord-Klein launched Transition Wrestling this year, while still working full-time in the business community. She runs the website and its social media, with some help from intern Allison Petix (who competes for King University). Highlights of our conversation with Gabrielle Lord-Klein follows.
Q: Why did you create Transition Wrestling?
Lord-Klein: This has been a long time in the works. It is so important to me. I had finished wrestling in college and moved out to California for two years. I was completely separated from the wrestling community. There was no space to be a fan of anything wrestling-oriented. My choice was either you are in wrestling or out of wrestling. DWU wrestling beaming with potential
The Dakota Wesleyan University wrestling team’s roster is thin, yet infused with talent. With an eight-wrestler roster, second-year coach Casey Mouw knows DWU is still a few years away from competing for the Great Plains Athletic Conference team title. But he’s confident with the wrestlers he puts on the mat. Marcus Urban, Seth Caro and Cole Halouska all garnered GPAC preseason honors, helping DWU earn a vote in the NAIA preseason poll. Urban, a Plankinton native, is the most decorated of the trio, finishing third at 157 pounds at the GPAC tournament and garnering all-GPAC second team honors last year. The junior moved up to 165 pounds this season, but was still tabbed as the No. 3 GPAC wrestler in his weight class and No. 20 nationally. WHY PENN STATE IS THE FAVORITE TO WIN ANOTHER WRESTLING NATIONAL TITLE
Penn State enters the 2019-20 wrestling season as the four-time defending NCAA champions, and is one again the favorite to repeat. Even after losing Bo Nickal and Jason Nolf, a pair of three-time champions and four-time finalists, the Nittany Lions have all of the tools to win their fifth straight NCAA title in March. After being a runaway favorite last year, however, this season will be much tighter. No. 12 Hilltoppers Steamroll WVU Tech, 48-3
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The No. 12-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team opened the 2019-20 in dominating fashion here Wednesday night, rolling to a 48-3 victory against WVU Tech before a large crowd at the ASRC. “No matter how good you might think you are going against each other during the preseason, you don’t really know until you get a chance to get out on the mat against a team that fights back to start getting some idea of where you’re at,” head coach Danny Irwin said. “We will be going up against a lot of nationally-ranked teams and nationally-ranked wrestlers down the road but (WVU Tech) had some pretty good guys and they competed hard tonight.” Two of Irwin’s three nationally-ranked wrestlers dominated from the opening whistle before winning by falls. Darius Bunch, the nation’s No. 3-ranked 141-pounder returning after redshirting a year ago, raced out to a 14-4 lead before stacking Golden Bear junior Nathan McClaugherty at the 6:34 mark. Logan Kemp, ranked No. 7 at 197, blitzed Vincent DeVaney in the night’s penultimate match, with the referee slapping the mat at 2:42 of the first period. Short Time Shots: 11-06-19
Getting back into the flow of college wrestling season is always one of those things where you’re all fired up and excited and doing so many things, and then by April, you’re like totally spent. Only this year, April means the Olympic Trials! Yes, it’s the first week of November, it’s already snowed twice here in Minnesota and I might already be overdoing it here with Short Time Shots. But have no fear, it’s still pushing through the adversity that is week one of the college wrestling season. Pitt-Johnstown’s Pecora reaches 600-win mark for career
Pat Pecora isn’t counting wins. At least not yet. That much was evident on Wednesday, when the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown announced that Pecora notched his 600th career victory during a 33-6 win over the Long Island University Sharks on Saturday in the Rutgers University Duals in New Jersey. The milestone happened without pre- or post-match hype or hoopla by the university until a two-sentence email release four days later. In his 44th season at Pitt-Johnstown, Pecora has the most dual-meet wins in NCAA Division II and is only 16 victories shy of the all-time mark in any division set by former Oregon State University coach Dale Thomas (616). Hand Raised – 3rd Season, Column 10
A Friday through Sunday Summary, All Over-looked and Under-rated Team, Small notes on the Big Boys, and ‘Cue the local angle…
Ted CarrerasUncategorized November 4, 2019
The College Wrestling season hit full swing this past weekend with action literally from Coast to Coast. Let’s poke around a bit and find some fun stuff, shall we?
UTC ASKS AN OLD FRIEND TO STEP OUTSIDE
Chattanooga hosted SIUE in what was originally a tri meet until injuries trimmed Presbyterians roster down to below optimal team competition levels. So it was up to host UTC and the Cougars, out of Edwardsville, IL., to put on the whole show. They wrestled in the brisk outside of Miller Park in beautiful downtown Chattanooga. (BTW, great tickets are still available for the Southern Scuffle Jan 1st and 2nd. GoMocs.com or 423-266-6627 for the fracas, for the fun, for the food, FOR THE CITY!) Score it 29-14 Chattanooga over their former conference foe as UTC took 7 out of 10 bouts with 4 bonus point wins. Last year’s star backup, 125LB Fabian Gutierrez, new 133LB Moc Franco Valdez, and 4 year starter 141LB Chris Debien accounted for 2 of those big victories. Following some back and forth at mid match, Chattanooga sealed the deal with Michael Waddells (a transfer from Oklahoma) first period pin at 184. UTC then took a weekend bus ride to Roanoke, VA and competed at Sundays Southeast Open. 10 Mocs placed at the always tough season opener set in the Great Commonwealth. 8 D1 teams sent “attached” competitors. This means they repped their schools on an official capacity. More on this event in a bit. SIUE headed home and heads east next weekend for a double dual with West Liberty and Coach Matt Azevedos Drexel Dragons. Of opening night note for the Cougars: the varsity debut of 3rd generation wrestler Max Kristoff, son of SIUE Hall of Fame All American Kip Kristoff and Grandson of Olympic Hero, SIUE Hall of Famer and former Coach Larry Kristoff. #Kristoffcubed won by fall, and 2 of SIUEs 2019 National qualifiers, 157LB Nate Higgins and 285LB Colton McKiernan, picked up the Cougars 2 other victories.
WISCONSIN WINS BIGLY AND LITTLY, ARMY NEARLY MOVES THE CHEESE, NAVYS VALOR DOUBLED UP BUT NEVER DOUBTED, AND OH NO, FRESNO, O-3?
Fridays 4 way, way out West, featured the Wisconsin Badgers, Army, Navy, and Fresno State in a 2 location quad meet of sorts. Very early in the day it was Chris Bonos Badgers being unkind visitors as they thumped Fresno State 31-8. Where the Bulldogs were strong, the Badgers were stronger and Wisky ran away with the win. But Wisconsin nearly lost their cheeseheads against a tough, talented Army team. Coach Kevin Ward has the Black Knights of the Hudson honed to a nasty edge right from the jump this year, and they jumped all over Wisconsins middle and upper weights. Army won 5 of 6 matches from 149 to 197 and held a 2 point lead heading into the Heavyweight match. Wisconsin All American Trent Hillger won his match and the dual for the Badgers with a 7-0 victory over Armys Ben Sullivan. Army would go on to defeat Fresno St. 29-9, and now preps for a tri-meet with Chattanooga and Illinois. Keep an eye on the Black Knights, folks. Right now they’d be the favorites for the All Academy Championships…if they choose to attend. Their absence last year was widely noticed and keenly felt. Navy took the All Academy title in 2019, and Friday they took a win from Fresno St. as well, 25-9.
