Ohio’s Lourdes University to add women’s wrestling
Lourdes University just outside Toledo will be adding a women’s intercollegiate wrestling program starting in the 2020-21 school year, according to a report at TransitionWrestling.com, a website devoted to covering women’s collegiate wrestling. The website also reports that Lourdes will be the first NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) school in Ohio to offer women’s wrestling. “Women’s wrestling is moving quickly and growing fast on the NAIA scene,” Janet Eaton, Lourdes Athletic Director, told TransitionWrestling.com. “Lourdes athletics is a place where all can be successful. The win marked coach John Smith‘s 428th dual victory, making him the fifth all-time winningest coach in NCAA DI wrestling. The victory over the Gophers (1-2; 0-0) marks Oklahoma State’s first win against a ranked opponent this season. Muhlenburg Wrestling Enjoys Historic Scotty Wood Day
The Muhlenberg wrestling team made history at the Scotty Wood Duals, going 3-1 with its first wins ever against Delaware Valley and Wilkes. The Mules (5-1) had been 0-23 all-time vs. Delaware Valley and 0-9 vs. Wilkes before posting decisive 38-12 and 42-9 wins, respectively, in their first and last matches of the day, winning all but one contested bout. Mavericks Crown Six Champions on Sunday
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women’s wrestling team crowned six champions in the Maverick Open on Sunday in Brownson Arena. The Open was the first-ever by the Maverick women’s program and featured wrestlers from Schreiner, York, Life Pacific and a handful of unattached wrestlers. Jennesis Martinez (101), Anja Schohl (116), Marissa Gallegos (123), Sierra Brown Ton (130), Dalia Garibay (136) and Alma Mendoza (143) all won their individual weight classes. All were round robins except for Garibay’s win at 136 pounds. Martinez finished ahead of Autumn Branson of York College after a pin at the 1:16 mark in the final bout of the weight while Tschohl earned a pair of tech fall wins on the way to the 116 pound title. The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team had 16 wrestlers finish in the top eight, with two claiming individual championships to lead #TheMovement to its first team title at the Keystone Classic since 2010.
Freshman No. 11 Michael Colaiocco won the 125-pound championship, while sophomore Doug Zapf claimed the 141-pound crown. West Liberty ‘Big Boys’ Come Up Big for No. 12 WLU Mat Squad
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The “big boys” came up big for the No. 12-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team in the Black and Gold’s sweep of No. 21 UNC-Pembroke and host Mount Olive in the Mount Olive Duals at Kornegay Arena on the Mount Olive campus.
“This was a long and challenging trip which pitted us against a couple of very well-coached teams,” WLU head coach Danny Irwin said, “and I’m proud of my guys for rising to meet that challenge. Today’s result shows how resilient we can be and will serve us well as we move on against teams like Mercyhurst and (Pitt-Johnstown) in the coming weeks.”
Strong finishes were the key for Irwin’s Hilltoppers, who won four of the last five matches in each of the duals to come out on top. No. 25 Purdue Sweeps Boilermaker Duals
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 25 Purdue wrestling team won 27-of-30 matches Sunday to post a 3-0 mark at the 2019 Boilermaker Duals in Holloway Gymnasium. The Boilermakers defeated Indianapolis 45-0, Clarion 34-6 and Northern Illinois 31-8 to improve to 6-1 in dual competition on the year. The Boilermakers picked up 12 bonus-point victories in the trio of duals, including two each from sophomore Parker Filius and junior Devin Schroder. Filius earned his second fall of the season, sticking Clarion’s Taylor Ortz in 4:21 and needing just 3:31 to secure a 16-0 technical fall over NIU’s Nathan Swartz. LITTLE ROCK KEEPS CREATING FIRSTS WITH MATCH VICTORY
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – It was a day of firsts as the Little Rock wrestling team competed in their first-ever dual as well as inaugural home opener at the Jack Stephens Center. LAUTT’S PIN LEADS CAROLINA TO 22-15 WIN OVER CHATTANOOGA
CHAPEL HILL — Clay Lautt’s second pin of the year and Zach Sherman’s major decision win helped No. 19 North Carolina (2-1) to a 22-15 win over Chattanooga (1-4) Sunday in Carmichael Arena.
After Chattanooga picked up five team points with a tech fall at 125 pounds, Jaime Hernandez and Sherman accounted for back-to-back wins to put Carolina back on top. The Pitt-Johnstown wrestlers won nine of the 10 bouts, including a technical fall by 2019 National Champion Connor Craig, on its way to a 35-6 non-conference win of the University of Findlay, Saturday night in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats improved to 8-2 on the year. Virginia Tech wins Navy Classic, McFadden climbs wins list
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Virginia Tech wrestling claimed first place at the Navy Classic Saturday at the U.S. Naval Academy. The Hokies finished with 116 points, nine points more than the second-place finisher, Campbell. David McFadden and Hunter Bolen took home titles for Tech at 165 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively. McFadden went 5-0 in the tournament to finish first, including a win by tech fall in the round of 32. Bolen also went 5-0, pinning two opponents en route to the title. With five wins at the Navy Classic, McFadden is now tied for 15th all-time in career wins at Virginia Tech. McFadden has 93 wins in his fourth year competing for Tech. He is approaching 100 wins, a feat only 12 Hokies have ever accomplished. Stanford improves to 3-1 overall
STANFORD, Calif. – Falls by Shane Griffith and Dalton Young helped Stanford wrestling secure a 21-19 win over Columbia, Saturday, in the Cardinal’s annual outdoor dual inside Football Fan Fest. The bonus-point victories for Griffith and Young were the difference as both Stanford (3-1) and Columbia (0-1) each won five bouts. The Cardinal jumped out to a 15-3 lead, winning four of the first five bouts. Redshirt freshman Tyler Eischens started things off for Stanford with a 6-1 decision over Riley Jacops at 157 pounds. Eischens led 2-1 after the first and rode out Jacops in the second. He added an escape, another takedown and racked up 3:37 in riding time in the win. Women wrestlers at UW-Stevens Point part of growing sport
STEVENS POINT – Jessika Rottier started wrestling when she was 4 years old. She wanted to be like her big brother, she said. Rottier is from Pulaski, and she started competing in youth leagues around the Green Bay area. There wasn’t a girls wrestling program at her school, so she joined the boys team, and competed exclusively against boys until college. “It wasn’t hard for me because that’s the way I grew up,” Rottier told Wisconsin Public Radio. “None of the guys I wrestled had any problems with it. BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The #9 NC State wrestling team hit the road for the first time this season up to New York, and won 16 of the 20 individual matches in bringing home a pair of road victories.
The Wolfpack (6-0) started with a 25-9 win at Cornell, then made the short drive and scored a 28-9 win at Binghamton in the night cap.
Highlighting the day was NC State’s #12 R-Fr. Trent Hidlay who scored a pair of top-five wins. First he took out #5 Darmstadt of Cornell (7-5), then followed up with a 2-1 win over #4 DePrez.

2019-2020 WCWA member institutions announced
The Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) has announced a list of 26 active member institutions for the 2019-20 season. The WCWA organization has acted as a multi-divisional governing body for collegiate women’s wrestling since 2008. As a nonprofit organization the WCWA continues to host an annual national championship, provide guidelines for recruiting, eligibility and governing bylaws in support of the structure and opportunity for women to wrestle in college. The WCWA has positively impacted the lives of students for years. In fact, the very first article published on this website was A Tribute to the Evolution of the WCWA National Tournament, in February 2019. Members are eligible to compete at the 2020 WCWA National Championships, hosted by Life University, in Marietta Georgia, February 7-8. It’s not clear what role the WCWA will have in the future as the sport develops within the NAIA and NCAA, but this years WCWA has strong, championship, competitors both individually and as teams. The newly released member count includes 11 NCAA programs, 10 NAIA programs and 5 junior college programs. That includes 5 first year programs, and 1 program beginning in 2020. HSOT’s preaseason dual-team wrestling rankings
RALEIGH, N.C. — The preseason HighSchoolOT dual-team wrestling rankings open up with Cary and St. Stephens on top of their respective top 25s. Cary, which lost just twice last season, is followed by Laney, Cardinal Gibbons, Cape Fear, and Leesville Road in the East. There are five new teams in the East rankings after last year’s final poll as Havelock, Cleveland, D.H. Conley, Rosewood, and Middle Creek have replaced (in order) Pine Forest, Gray’s Creek, Overhills, Chapel Hill, and Topsail. These are the inaugural West rankings, which feature reigning 3A state champ St. Stephens tops, followed by 4A champ Northwest Guilford and 1A champ Uwharrie Charter.
