College of the Redwoods Announces the Addition of Men’s and Women’s Wrestling

The College of the Redwoods Athletic department is pleased to formally announce the addition of Intercollegiate Men’s and Women’s wrestling starting in the fall of 2023. The programs will compete in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and be sponsored in the Big 8 athletic conference.
“We are extremely excited to be moving forward with the implementation of both these wrestling programs,” said CR Athletics Director Bob Brown. “It will be the first time for a women’s program and the revival of the men’s program after a more than 40 year absence from competition.”
The department will start initial recruitment a coaching staff for each program this fall and then plan off-season conditioning for new student recruits starting in the spring semester of 2023. JARVIS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY BECOMES THE MOST RECENT HBCU TO ADD WRESTLING
HAWKINS, Texas – Jarvis Christian University Athletic Director Bobby Ladner announced the addition of a men’s and women’s wrestling program today in an expansion of the JCU athletic department.
The men’s wrestling program will one of four active active programs among the HBCUs. Morgan State will be adding wrestling for the 2023 season, and will be the first NCAA Division I HBCU with the sport. The JCU women’s wrestling program will be the only active women’s program among HBCUs. JCU is also just the fifth college in Texas to add the sport. JCU joins fellow NAIA members Wayland Baptist University and Texas Wesleyan University in competition in the state. Schreiner University and Texas Woman’s University compete at the NCAA level.
JCU will join the Sooner Athletic Conference for wrestling since the Red River Athletic Conference does not sponsor the sport. JCU will join Oklahoma City University, Texas Wesleyan, Wayland Baptist, Central Christian College, and Arkansas Baptist College in competition on the men’s side. On the women’s side, JCU will join Texas Wesleyan, Wayland Baptist, Oklahoma City, Central Christian, Lyon College, and Missouri Baptist University.

University of Montevallo announces the addition of College Wrestling
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo President John W. Stewart III has announced the addition of men’s wrestling as an intercollegiate sport within the athletic department. The inaugural season for the program will begin in the winter of 2023. The addition of men’s wrestling will increase the number of intercollegiate sports at Montevallo to 22. The announcement marks the addition of the 11th new intercollegiate sport added at Montevallo within the past 10 years.
“We’re excited about the continued growth within our athletic department,” said Montevallo Athletic Director Mark Richard. “We’re proud to offer the opportunity for talented student-athletes to continue their wrestling careers at the collegiate level. We look forward to adding to our high-achieving student-athlete population on campus.”
A head coach for the new program is expected to be selected this summer. The team will compete at Trustmark Arena, inside the Robert M. McChesney Student Activity Center.
Montevallo is the first NCAA Division II institution and second overall in the state of Alabama to add men’s wrestling as an intercollegiate sport. The University will become the 68th NCAA Division II institution to add wrestling. D’Youville to Become First New York State University to Add Women’s Wrestling
BUFFALO, N.Y. – D’Youville University has announced plans to add women’s wrestling as a varsity sport beginning in the 2023-24 academic year. The addition of this program will bring D’Youville to 17 varsity sports sponsorships.
“This is an exciting day for the university and our athletics department,” said Director of Athletics Ona Halladay. “We are committed to gender equity, Title IX compliance, and creating opportunities for women to compete at the intercollegiate level and beyond. As one of the fastest growing sports in the country, we believe that D’Youville has the infrastructure, resources, and academic profile to become an elite women’s wrestling program.”
In 2004, women’s wrestling was recognized as an Olympic Sports. Since then, 21 NCAA Division II women’s wrestling have been added throughout the United States. The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has been instrumental in the growth of women’s college wrestling, most notably developing the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA).  The WCWA serves as the governing body for women’s college wrestling and competed under international freestyle rules. The NCAA recognized women’s wrestling as an emerging sport in 2020 for all three divisions.
