Stand Out, Pin Down: Wrestler Jake Fernicola ’24 Creates His Own Style

Jake Fernicola ’24 stands out in a Davidson crowd. The college’s only heavyweight wrestler, he’s also president of the Anime Club, has several tattoos, wears vintage t-shirts with flannel on top and usually rocks a hat that says “DAD.” The two-sport athlete chose Davidson over Yale.

“I was actually more focused on football, but I was open to football or wrestling in college, and I went on several official visits,” he said. “Davidson was the only wrestling visit. Ultimately, it came down to football at Yale or wrestling at Davidson. The Davidson Trust and other wrestling support made a huge difference, and I loved the whole experience on campus. In the end, I only applied to Davidson, and it’s definitely been the right choice.”

His nickname, Coca-Cola (risky on a Pepsi campus), is a derivative of his grandpa’s nickname, Joe Pepsi. … rest of story at gocamels.com/news/wrestling-hixenbaugh-named-socon-wrestler-of-the-week

Cowboy Wrestling Announces Bout at the Ballpark Against Michigan Set for February

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State Cowboy wrestling program in partnership with REV Entertainment announced that the Cowboys will be returning to Bout at the Ballpark presented by Kubota for the second straight year to face Michigan on February 3, 2023, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Last season, the Cowboys faced off with the Iowa Hawkeyes in the inaugural event. The event was a historical performance, especially for Daton Fix who wrestled in two bouts, one for Team USA and one for Oklahoma State, becoming the first wrestler to represent his university and country on the same day. Fix won both matches defeating Guessepe Rea of Ecuador, 10-0, in a freestyle bout, before getting the best of Iowa’s third-ranked Austin Desanto for the third time in his career with a 5-3 decision.

The event will feature a new format this year, with one wrestling mat placed on home plate. Floor seating will also be added for the event. Bout at the Ballpark will mark the seventh meeting between the two programs who have not wrestled each other in a dual since 2004. … rest of story at OKstate.com/news/cowboy-wrestling-announces-bout-at-the-ballpark-against-michigan-set-for-february

John Smith Unhappy with Big Ten Reluctancy to Schedule Oklahoma State

John Smith, Michigan coach Sean Bormet and Sean Decker, president of REV Entertainment, earlier this week previewed the “Bout at the Ballpark” taking place at Globe Life Field in Arlington on Feb. 3 between the Cowboys and the Wolverines.

Smith and Bormet discussed how the scheduling came about and Smith, as he’s rarely afraid to do, gave his unabashed opinion on his struggles scheduling with the Big Ten, calling it “Bullsh*t.”

“Getting anyone else [outside of Iowa and Minnesota] to [wrestle Oklahoma State] in the Big Ten has been real difficult,” Smith said. … rest of story at pistolsfiringblog.com/john-smith-unhappy-with-big-ten-reluctancy-to-schedule-oklahoma-state

Newberry Wolves Put On A Show In First Home Dual Of Season

Newberry Dominates Home Bout To Move To 2-0 On The Season
NEWBERRY,S.C. — In the first home match of the 2022-2023, Head Coach Deral Brown and the Wolves (2-0, 2-0 SACC) put on a show for the home crowd with a 43-12 win over Lincoln Memorial. The night was dominated by the Wolves as all wins came in the form of pins, technical falls, and major decisions. Even after two forfeits from the opposing team, the team remained focused and turned their attention to getting a result for Newberry in a packed Eleazer Arena.

The night would get started at 125 lbs, but the Wolves would not be able to get the dual started on a high note as the Wolves would go down by pin. At 133 lbs, Timothy Decatur (Goldsboro, N.C.) would soon change the mood as he would pin his opponent, though if he would have completed his move he would have had a tech fall victory by a score of 21-5. A second loss for the Wolves in the 141 lb weight class would be the last time a Wolf would not get their hand raised as Newberry would go on a roll after.

Devan Moore (Baxely, Ga.) would make quick work … rest of story at UNCpbraves.com/news/wrestling-rumbles-past-limestone-in-home-dual-debut

GAFFNEY, S.C.- The Limestone University women’s wrestling team fell to Brewton-Parker College on Tuesday, November 15 in the Timken Center by a final score of 31-13. The contest was much closer than the final score suggests, as BPC, the 13th-ranked team in the NAIA, secured 15 points via forfeit.

The Barons started the contest with a 15-0 advantage thanks to three-consecutive forfeit victories in the 101, 109, and 116-lb. divisions. BP’s Alesandra Burgos earned a 10-0 technical fall victory over junior Caroline Schmitt (Orlando, Fla) in the 123-lb. weight class.
