The department will start initial recruitment a coaching staff for each program this fall and then plan off-season conditioning for new student recruits starting in the spring semester of 2023. JARVIS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY BECOMES THE MOST RECENT HBCU TO ADD WRESTLING
HAWKINS, Texas – Jarvis Christian University Athletic Director Bobby Ladner announced the addition of a men’s and women’s wrestling program today in an expansion of the JCU athletic department.
The men’s wrestling program will one of four active active programs among the HBCUs. Morgan State will be adding wrestling for the 2023 season, and will be the first NCAA Division I HBCU with the sport. The JCU women’s wrestling program will be the only active women’s program among HBCUs. JCU is also just the fifth college in Texas to add the sport. JCU joins fellow NAIA members Wayland Baptist University and Texas Wesleyan University in competition in the state. Schreiner University and Texas Woman’s University compete at the NCAA level.
JCU will join the Sooner Athletic Conference for wrestling since the Red River Athletic Conference does not sponsor the sport. JCU will join Oklahoma City University, Texas Wesleyan, Wayland Baptist, Central Christian College, and Arkansas Baptist College in competition on the men’s side. On the women’s side, JCU will join Texas Wesleyan, Wayland Baptist, Oklahoma City, Central Christian, Lyon College, and Missouri Baptist University.
As one of the rare HBCU institutions with a wrestling program, Ladner believes JCU has an opportunity to grow the sport. … rest of the story at https://www.nwcaonline.com/jarvis-christian-university-becomes-the-most-recent-hbcu-to-add-wrestling/

D’Youville to Become First New York State University to Add Women’s Wrestling
BUFFALO, N.Y. – D’Youville University has announced plans to add women’s wrestling as a varsity sport beginning in the 2023-24 academic year. The addition of this program will bring D’Youville to 17 varsity sports sponsorships.
“This is an exciting day for the university and our athletics department,” said Director of Athletics Ona Halladay. “We are committed to gender equity, Title IX compliance, and creating opportunities for women to compete at the intercollegiate level and beyond. The NCAA recognized women’s wrestling as an emerging sport in 2020 for all three divisions.
“This announcement represents the first NCAA Division II affiliated women’s wrestling program in New York State and the 121st intercollegiate program added since 2000,” said Mike Moyer, Executive Director … rest of story at … https://www.nwcaonline.com/dyouville-to-become-first-new-york-state-university-to-add-womens-wrestling/

Raheem Jones presented 2022 Michael Stokes Award

Raheem Jones named for the 31st Michael Stokes Award
Undefeated State Champion Raheem Jones of North Pitt High School won his state title in the 2-A 182 lbs. Division with 42 wins. After placing 3rd his freshman year he did not place the next two years. Raheem also earned his 3rd TDR Top 12 engraved wooden plaque this year as the top wrestler in his weight in eastern North Carolina. More details will be announced once a time and place for the award presentation is determined.
Michael Stokes wrestled the 1981-1984 seasons at Tarboro High School and with a (96–4) career record. He was North Carolina’s 2nd 3-time State Champion when there was only one individual champion at a weight in the state. He wrestled for N.C. State and won ACC wrestling titles in 1988 and 1989 and was named the ACC Most Valuable Wrestler both years. His record of 68 wins 8 losses and 3 ties (.879) is the best career winning percentage at NC State. He finished second at the NCAA Nationals at 126 lbs. in 1989 to Kendall Cross, the eventual Olympic Gold medalist. Stokes co-captained the Wolfpack in 1989 and one of the ACC’s all time 50 greatest wrestlers as recognized during the conference’s 50th anniversary celebration. Stokes credits wrestling as “providing me with a mental toughness that enables me to remove boundaries that stand in my way. Wrestling has given me the sheer determination to believe that I can conquer anything that I set my mind to do.”
