Wrestlers will converge in Chattanooga Wednesday through Friday, Feb 24-26, at the same tournament site instead of this week. “Temperatures in Middle and West Tennessee are not expected to reach freezing over the next couple of days so it is unlikely that conditions will improve this week,” the TSSAA indicated. “Additional ice and snow is in the forecast for these areas on Wednesday and Thursday, which makes it very likely that many participating schools would not be able to attend the TSSAA Wrestling State Championships.” …rest of story at http://www.williamsonherald.com/sports/state-wrestling-tssaa-postpones-championships-due-to-weather/article_d50cb268-6fd8-11eb-a12c-7b84ec57cb50.html?mc_cid=9e45a80a12&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
AND (Iowa) Pinning Combination: Iowa pauses, UNI-ISU preview, high school districts and more
Less than a month after the start of a delayed season, the Iowa wrestling team is sidelined again. The top-ranked Hawkeyes wrestled Purdue and Ohio State on Sunday, then were shut down due to COVID-19 precautions the next day. The Gazette’s K.J. Pilcher, The Predicament’s G. Wyatt Schultz and former coach Dick Briggs discuss Iowa’s situation on this week’s episode of the Pinning Combination.
Also on this week’s show:
• Iowa State and Northern Iowa are still wrestling and will meet this Sunday in Ames, along with Arizona State.
• American Rivers Conference competition continues, but the NCAA Division III Championships have been canceled, leaving wrestlers and coaches heartbroken for the second straight year.
• Recapping Saturday’s Class 1A and 2A sectional tournaments and Tuesday’s regional duals
• Previewing Saturday’s Iowa high school district tournaments … rest of story at https://www.thegazette.com/subject/podcast/pinning-combination-podcast/pinning-combination-iowa-pauses-uni-isu-preview-high-school-districts-and-more-20210211?mc_cid=b6bf9ab19d&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – (Ohio) Regis Sr. finally receives formal HoF induction
It may have taken longer than expected, but Jack Regis Sr. is finally a member of the Ohio Wrestling Officials Hall of Fame, which is sponsored by the Ohio Wrestling Officials Association. Regis, 71, a lifelong Martins Ferry resident is in his 29th season of officiating high school wrestling in both Ohio and West Virginia. The honor is usually bestowed upon an individual during the state tournament in Columbus in March. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic just starting last year, the ceremony was delayed. He was presented with his plaque during the recent Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association Division II State Duals last weekend in Steubenville.
“It’s nice to finally receive this award,” Regis said. “It’s very nice to be honored by your peers.”
Dr. Randy Wrobel was also inducted.
Congratulations
Danny Irwin continues his magic on the hilltop as West Liberty rolled to the Mountain East Conference wrestling tournament title last weekend inside the ASRC. The youthful West Liberty head coach, who was the 2019 NCAA Division II Coach of the Year when he led then-Wheeling Jesuit University to a national tournament runnerup finish, has turned things around on Route 88. He was hired in April of 2019 and hit the mat grappling. … rest of story at https://www.timesleaderonline.com/sports/local-sports/2021/02/regis-sr-finally-receives-formal-hof-induction/?mc_cid=b6bf9ab19d&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – (New York) Putnam Valley’s Will Carano commits to powerhouse Iowa
When Will Carano was a sophomore at Putnam Valley, his college destination was the least of his worries and it was still too soon to give it any thought. However, a trip to the University of Iowa for a week-and-a-half long wrestling camp completely changed his perspective. From that point on, Carano knew that’s where he wanted to be. “I’d been to a bunch of other camps all over and no camp was even close to how great that camp was,” Carano said. “All the coaches are awesome, the facilities are awesome, and the whole Iowa City is awesome. It was kind of a mixture of everything — the competition and how the mentality of the coaches fed into everyone else in the room so everybody worked harder.” The experience motivated Carano, who has now made his dream come true as a senior. After graduating, the Putnam Valley standout will be spending the next four years wrestling for the Hawkeyes. … rest of story at https://www.lohud.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2021/01/05/wrestling-putnam-valley-will-carano-commits-iowa/6551535002/?mc_cid=afb669e366&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

8 } – (Virginia) From Day One of Blackhawk to senior leader, undefeated regular season with Powhatan wrestling
Hayden Fitzsimmons chronicles growth of both the wrestling program and himself through the Blackhawk Powhatan youth wrestling club and the standard set by Coach Mike Walter
The match took place nearly a year ago. Hayden Fitzsimmons recalled it like it had happened yesterday. The Powhatan High School wrestler, then a junior, was facing King George County’s Mettres Murrill in the consolation quarterfinals of last year’s Class 4, Region B tournament. Murrill, a defending regional champion, put Fitzsimmons to his back in the second period. Fitzsimmons fought off the three-point pin attempt for what he said was like a minute before he got out of the jam. He stayed on top of Murrill through the majority of the third and final period of regulation, but he was still behind in points, trailing Murrill 3-1. Nine seconds remained.
But Fitzsimmons remembered how, the week before, his dad – Powhatan assistant wrestling coach and Blackhawk Powhatan youth wrestling club co-founder Richard Fitzsimmons – was showing him a last-desperation turn move. It was an all-or-nothing-type move that could either put your opponent on their back, or leave yourself in a position to get pinned. … rest of story at https://richmond.com/community/powhatan-today/from-day-one-of-blackhawk-to-senior-leader-undefeated-regular-season-with-powhatan-wrestling/article_397424d8-6576-11eb-b1e1-3f21d3a27e28.html?mc_cid=e1d5a94c45&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – WRESTLING: Beaver Dam’s Kyler Neuberger, dad Jason enjoying ride to state together
Competing at one of the lighter weights over the years, Kyler Neuberger has never had much of an advantage when it comes to size on his peers — much less his dad. That didn’t stop the junior on Beaver Dam’s prep wrestling team from trying to beat the old man, though. “One time when I was younger I pinned him, and he made me this nice hat with a big pin on it. Obviously he wasn’t trying,” Kyler recounted of when he was 8 years old. Now the two are on a little bit more even playing field, albeit dad Jason still has the edge. “I think I’ve taken him down once this whole season. That’s it. He’s pretty good,” Kyler said. “I think this is the closest I’ve been to beating him, and I’ve taken him down once.”
Fortunately for Kyler, he’s not competing against his dad when the matches count on his record. In fact, they’re competing together, on the same team. And they’re enjoying one heck of a ride, too. … rest of story at https://www.wiscnews.com/bdc/sports/high-school/wrestling/wrestling-beaver-dams-kyler-neuberger-dad-jason-enjoying-ride-to-state-together/article_2f75784a-e46d-585f-9a5d-c88d70d2051f.html?mc_cid=a6cfb4b322&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

10 } – (Michigan) From bite to taking flight: ‘Sky’s the limit’ for Ira Jenkins, top-ranked wrestler and D-I prospect
WHITEHALL – Long before Ira Jenkins became a top-ranked high school wrestler in Michigan and Division I prospect, he was a bit of a “gumpy kid,” according to his father. The Whitehall junior sure has come a long way since his grade-school days, when he was getting dominated on the mat by then-stranger and now close friend and teammate Max Brown. Now, the “sky is the limit” for Jenkins, according to people who train and coach him. Makes total sense, given that the student with the weighted cumulative GPA of 4.037 aspires to one day become a fighter pilot or astronaut.
Since he was a boy, Jenkins has been fascinated by outer space and flight. “I think of what’s out there (in space) and how big it is and it goes on for a really long time. We’re just so small in this universe and it’s, like, crazy to think about that stuff,” he said. “I mean, years from now, who knows where we’re going to be. We’re doing stuff with Mars, working to get there. I really like all that stuff and it would be really cool to be a part of.” Jenkins is 17 years old now. At 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, he looks like a grown man, especially if you watch him on the wrestling mat or football field. He has much more depth to him than the stereotypical “jock.” He’s class president and model student-athlete, and he continues to reach for the stars. … rest of story at https://www.mlive.com/highschoolsports/2021/02/from-bite-to-taking-flight-skys-the-limit-for-ira-jenkins-top-ranked-wrestler-and-d-i-prospect.html?mc_cid=a6cfb4b322&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

11 } – (Indiana) 2021 State Finals by the Numbers
We are closing in on another state finals in what has been an extraordinary year all around. However, with all the uncertainly around us, there is one thing that remains the same. That is the IndianaMat rankings are always top notch. This year Mike Reiser has upped the ante by getting 186 out of 224 qualifiers in the last set of rankings. Just a quick reminder that we lock the rankings before the first whistle at sectional and let them ride. We saw top wrestlers missing weight or getting hit with COVID quarantines, yet the rankings still held serve. There is only one match in the whole first round that puts two wrestlers that were not in the rankings against each other. Mike is still working on a perfect bracket of all ranked wrestlers making the state finals. This year 106, 132, and 170 all had 15 of 16 qualifiers in the rankings.
As always we have created brackets with our rankings on them for you to download and use for all your pick’em purposes. This year we have two sets, one with just state rankings and one with both semi-state and state rankings. I would hold off printing any of these out as your official copies as there may be a couple more surprises added to the brackets this week. … rest of story at https://indianamat.com/index.php?/articles.html/high-school-news/tournament-previews/2021-state-finals-by-the-numbers-r1046/&mc_cid=c18c111026&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

12 } – (Wisconsin) Bianchi Reacts to Achieving History at State Wrestling Tournament
There were many eyes on Matt Bianchi Saturday and the Two Rivers High School senior wrestler did not disappoint. The Raiders athlete who entered the State Division-2 meet at Adams-Friendship with a 147-10 career record accomplished what he set out to do: win a 4th State Wrestling title. Entering the 3rd period of the 145 lb championship match against Lodi sophomore Zach Licht & needing a takedown to win it, wrestling correspondent Terry Stake called the final seconds of the match via live streaming when Bianchi earned the match-sealing takedown, did a backflip, and became the 19th wrestler in Wisconsin high school history to win four state titles in his career. After capturing the 4-peat, Matti said it “feels so amazing and just like a little stress relief.  It feels awesome to accomplish it.” … rest of story at https://www.seehafernews.com/2021/02/15/bianchi-reacts-to-achieving-history-at-state-wrestling-tournament/?mc_cid=9e45a80a12&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

1 } – THIS WEEK’S NCAA DIV. I SCHEDULE ONLY INCLUDES A HANDFUL OF BIG TEN AND BIG 12 MATCHES
Here is this week’s Div. I college wrestling schedule, broken up by conference. Please note that we are including the most current NWCA Div. I poll rankings, as published on February 16. Most of the Div. I programs have finished their dual meet season, with only nine Big Ten matches and two Big 12 matches. Of these bouts, five of the dual meets include two ranked teams. On Monday, No. 1 Iowa gave an update, since the program had paused activities last week. The team is returning to limited in-person activity, but their Friday dual meet against Northwestern has been postponed. At this time, the status of their Sunday dual meet at No. 25 Wisconsin had not yet been determined. It remains on the schedule, but its status is still in question. On Tuesday, Davidson College, which competes in the Southern Conference, announced that it had paused wrestling activities, finishing its season completely. Davidson will not compete at the SoCon Championships, which is scheduled for Sunday, February 28 at Appalachian State. … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2021/February/17/This-weeks-NCAA-Div-I-schedule?mc_cid=76aa098ad3&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – Slight movement in Top 25 heading into final week of Division I regular season
Manheim, Pennsylvania – While there were no new teams in the NWCA Division I Coaches Poll released on Tuesday, there were slight shifts of teams within the Top 25. There’s a new No. 2 as Penn State (4-0) beat Michigan 18-13 on Sunday morning to move the Nittany Lions behind No. 1 Iowa (5-0). Michigan slid to fourth after the loss. Virginia Tech closed out a perfect regular season at 9-0 after a 27-12 win over No. 16 Pittsburgh to claim the ACC regular season title. Seventh-ranked NC State topped Duke 37-6, while Minnesota opened up the weekend with a brunch time 27-7 win over then-No. 19 Wisconsin. The Badgers were also upended by unranked Northwestern and dropped six spots to No. 25 this week. From a dual meet perspective, the top event on the weekend saw Arizona State beat a pair of ranked teams in Iowa. The Sun Devils moved back into the Top 10 after a 20-15 win over No. 13 Iowa State and a 24-10 win over Northern Iowa. Earlier in the week, ASU beat Cal Poly 34-6 in Pac-12 action. Also in the tri-meet, Iowa State topped Northern Iowa 23-17. In the ACC, No. 15 North Carolina beat then-No. 21 Virginia 25-9 in Chapel Hill. The only other matchup between ranked teams came in the Big Ten as No. 17 Purdue bested then-No. 22 Michigan State 21-12. Navy moved up to No. 18 this week and snapped its four-dual losing streak to rival Army West Point 20-13. Rider topped Drexel 20-16. … rest of story and complete poll at http://www.nwcaonline.com/slight-movement-in-top-25-heading-into-final-week-of-division-i-regular-season/?mc_cid=83f6447486&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – Top 10 College Wrestling Performances of the Week – February 15th, 2021
As quickly as it started, the college regular season is almost gone. Valentine’s Day weekend marked the end of the regular season for the ACC school’s and many others around the country. Some will compete next weekend. Others like American and Lock Haven are expected to make their season debuts at their conference tournaments. Speaking of debuts, this past weekend, we saw three wrestlers, currently ranked #1 at their respective weights, make their first appearances of the year. Like most things in 2020 and 2021, the conference tournament schedules will be unusual. The majority will take place two weeks from now, while others will be conducted the first weekend of March.  Another new wrinkle in 2021 has been the flexibility of scheduling. After Iowa’s program was temporarily shut down, Michigan added a dual with Penn State on the fly. An unplanned dual between a pair of top-three teams in the nation, on only a few days’ notice, live on the Big Ten Network…YES PLEASE!
So this weekend had a battle between two national heavyweight teams, one of the best traditional rivalries in all of sports, a national champion going down, one of the best comebacks of the year, and the question…is it really an upset if it happens two weeks in a row? That and more in the top ten college performances of the week.
10) Brock Mauller (Missouri)
The third-ranked 149 lber in the nation, Brock Mauller, faced his most substantial test of the season on Sunday afternoon at the Cowboy Challenge. After notching a pair of wins against Warren Carr (Wyoming) and Jarod Kadel (Oklahoma State), Mauller advanced to meet four-ranked Boo Lewallen (Oklahoma State) in the championship bout. … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/college-wrestling-news/top-10-college-wrestling-performances-of-the-week-february-15th-2021/80029?mc_cid=9e45a80a12&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – Iowa State Winners Over NDSU and SDSU

Carr took out Jared Franek by 17-5 major decision, while Broderson bested Riley Habisch by 8-0 major decision. 5 } – Rider Wrestling Upsets #25 Lehigh, 17-15
Ethan Laird’s decision over nationally-ranked No. 5 Jordan Wood gives Rider the victory
BETHLEHEM, PA – Senior heavyweight Ethan Laird (Waterford, PA/General McLane) stunned nationally-ranked No. 5 Jordan Wood with an 8-5 decision as the Rider University wrestling team upset No. 25 Lehigh, 17-15, Sunday afternoon at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. With the win, the Broncs’ third-straight, Rider improves to 3-1 on the season. Lehigh is now 3-4. Rider kept the match within reach with sudden victory decisions at 149 and 165 lbs. from Wyatt McCarthy (Newton, NJ/Newton) and Jake Silverstein (Hauppauge, NY/Smithtown [Nebraska]), respectively. Angel Garcia (Philadelphia, PA/Mariana Bracetti Academy) scored a takedown in the final seconds of his match at 174 lbs. to momentarily even the match at 12-12 before the Broncs were assessed a one-point team penalty for control of the mat area in celebrating the victory. 6 } – No. 9 Illini Dominant in 31-6 Win Over Northwestern
EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 9 Illinois took down Northwestern in a dominant 31-6 victory in Evanston on Sunday afternoon, improving to 5-2 on the season. The Illini won eight of the ten matches against the Wildcats, including five-straight matches to wrap up the dual. At 133-pounds, Lucas Byrd picked up his second pin and team-high sixth match win of the season in Sunday’s victory. Justin Cardani found himself in another tight battle with Northwestern’s Michael DeAugustino. The 125-pound bout to start the afternoon went down to the wire, as Cardani earned an escape with under 20 seconds to go in the third period, but DeAugustino would pick up a minute of riding time to take the 2-1 decision. Lucas Byrd continued his impressive 2021 campaign, improving to 5-1 on the season after defeating Dylan Utterback by fall (5:15). The redshirt freshman notched his second fall of the season in the third period, pushing the Illini in front of the Wildcats, 6-3. … rest of story at https://fightingillini.com/news/2021/2/7/wrestling-no-9-illini-dominant-in-31-6-win-over-northwestern.aspx?mc_cid=a4f7af871f&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – Takeaways: Two Big 12 takedowns for Iowa State wrestling
Iowa State wrestling was in need of more Big 12 victories heading in to its weekend duels in North Dakota. And by Sunday’s end, the Cyclones got what they came for, beating North Dakota State 32-6 and South Dakota State 19-12. The Cyclones now stand 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big 12.
Back on the mat
Due to injuries, the Cyclones have been without a few solid wrestlers since the start of the season. Before the trip to North Dakota, Iowa State wrestling assistant coach Brent Metcalf mentioned that fans might be seeing those guys back on the mat. His assumption turned out to be correct. All-American redshirt senior Jarrett Degen returned to the mat in Fargo, North Dakota, wrestling at 149 pounds against North Dakota State’s Jaden Van Maanen. … rest of story at https://www.iowastatedaily.com/sports/wrestling/takeaways-two-big-12-takedown-for-iowa-state-wrestling/article_bd2fdefa-6a5a-11eb-916f-a3405e5bd08b.html?mc_cid=a084ab7fd9&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

8 } – Hofstra In Control Against Sacred Heart
Fairfield, CT – Hofstra wrestling put on a dominating performance on the mat against Sacred Heart Tuesday night from the William H. Pratt Center. Of the 14 matches held, Hofstra won 13 of them and picked up three wins by fall and three wins by tech fall. Redshirt senior Vinny Vespa snapped a two-match losing streak by scoring a 5-1 decision at 141 pounds, starting a run of 12 straight wins for Hofstra. Sophomore Justin Hoyle picked up the first of two wins in the evening with a pin of Vincent Milazzo at 141 pounds. In the second period, Hoyle used his top position to manipulate Milazzo onto his back and secured the pin. Hoyle later wrestled again at 141 pounds and earned his second win by fall when he threw Thomas Volpe to his back and ended the match in 23 seconds. Freshman Joe McGinty secured a tough 3-2 decision at 157 pounds when, after being denied a takedown, repositioned himself and scored a single-leg takedown in the third period and prevented Sacred Heart’s Shaun Williams from escaping or reversing with solid positioning. Senior Charles Small followed that up with a 3-2 decision win of his own … rest of story at https://gohofstra.com/news/2021/2/9/wrestling-wrest-hofstra-in-control-against-sacred-heart.aspx?mc_cid=a084ab7fd9&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

On February 3, the NCAA announced the cancellation of the Division III winter championships for wrestling as well as basketball, indoor track and field, swimming and diving, and ice hockey. Following the NCAA’s announcement, the NWCA Division III Leadership Group, led by Chairman Lonnie Morris, Head Coach at Johnson & Wales, began working to provide a championship experience for athletes who had just had their championship tournament canceled for the second year in a row. Morris shared, “It is an honor to be part of the leadership group that helped create this opportunity for our student-athletes.”

RELEASE | NCAA DIII Winter Sports Cancellation

USA Wrestling, the national governing body for wrestling in the United States, announced on February 5 that it would host a tournament for Div. III wrestlers. With the assurance from the NWCA that this event will be held, USA Wrestling will help publicize the NWCA Division III Coaches Association National Wrestling Championships. The most important thing for the wrestling community is that these Div. III student-athletes have one season-ending event.

The championships will place the top eight wrestlers, and each will earn NWCA All-America honors. There will be no team points kept and no team awards given. Athletes competing must be on their school’s official roster and entered into the OPC, the NCAA’s weight management program.

Those interested in helping offset the estimated $100,000 cost of hosting the event may donate to the crowdfunding page set up by the NWCA by clicking here. All donations received will be put into a restricted NWCA Division III Wrestling Coaches Association account (administered by the NWCA) and used to defray costs associated with this championship. … rest of the story at https://portal.nwcaonline.com/articles/NWCA_News/NWCA-Division-III-Coaches-Association-25-2-2021

High School News (2021) – # 7

TDR Editor’s Notes ; During a normal year North Carolina would have held their State Championships last weekend. In previous years that has led to a busy week of work tabuating the results, gathering input on the final TDR Top 12 rankings, ordering awards and trophies and in many years the final editing and voice over for the televised state finals. Yet in ‘The Time of CoVid’ we have had no wrestling so far. Official team practices will start April 12th with the State Finals on June 28th. We shall make no comment on that. Championships were held in Georgia and Nebraska and a few other states. More will be held this weekend. The following is the first of many scholastic postings with championship news. Also note that the USA Wrestling National Recruiting tournaments will be held in several locations. The closest for North Carolina is in Doswell, Virginia just north of Richmond. It will be across the road from King’s Dominion Amusement Park. Keep on Wrestling!

1 } – No excuses allowed at state wrestling
There’s been lots of wrestling chatter in this coronavirus-plagued season. Cock your ear and you’ll hear talk about scheduling inequities, loss of tournaments, state tournament seedings and lack of regionals. Now Jeff Schumacher, who shares Bismarck’s head coaching duties with Mark Lardy, says that’s all history. “We’re going down there with what we’ve got, and it’s time to wrestle. There are no excuses,” he said as he looked ahead to today’s first round of action at the Fargodome. Class A competition within the 32-slot brackets begins at 3:30 p.m. today and continues Saturday. Saturday is reserved for the dual tournament. With the West and East region tournaments shut down this season, there has been no winnowing process. All teams will be permitted to bring full lineups, which will mean considerably more matches and a corresponding increase in scoring. In 1988 and 1989 when the Class A tournament was essentially an all-comers tournament, point totals reached record levels. Century won with 290 points in 1988, a record that still stands. Bismarck claimed the title with 256.5 points the next year. Bismarck, with five previous state champions and four other returning state placers in its lineup, appears capable of challenging that record. … rest of story at https://bismarcktribune.com/sports/no-excuses-allowed-at-state-wrestling/article_0d86895d-696f-52b7-bdaa-589a8b1cc698.html?mc_cid=279b9a2f50&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – Your guide to the top stars and storylines to watch in state tournaments this week on Trackwrestling
The third week of February is typically a smorgasbord of high-level high school wrestling state championships. Even in a COVID-scrambled season, this week’s menu is still loaded with 16 championship events in nine states and two dozen nationally-ranked competitors expected to take the mat in tournaments streamed on Trackwrestling.
Here’s a look at some of the top stars and storylines to follow:
— Iowa recruit Drake Ayala began the season ranked No. 1 nationally at 126 pounds and might have gone wire-to-wire at the top spot, except the two-time state champion sought out bigger challenges during his senior year.  Ayala moved up to 132 early in the season and posted a major decision win against three-time Iowa state champ Matthew Lewis. He went up again in January for a chance to take on returning state champ and fellow Sebolt Wrestling Academy training partner Ryder Block of Waverly-Shell Rock. Block scored a 9-7 victory that vaulted him into the national rankings, ended Ayala’s string of 113 consecutive victories and also solidified the Fort Dodge senior’s postseason plans.  “I would never feel good about myself going to 126 and winning, knowing I could never get that match back,” Ayala told IAWrestle. “That’s not the person I am. I would much rather get second at 132 than first at 126.”  Block went 44-0 last season as a freshman and enters this year’s state meet with a 23-0 record. Ayala is looming on the opposite side of the bracket with a 25-1 mark. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1613707832994&twSessionId=yhrhlvmyww&postId=1072246135&mc_cid=279b9a2f50&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – NFHS says social contact, not sports, causes most COVID-19 spread among athletes
An analysis by the National Federation of State High School Associations revealed that social interaction — not competing in high school sports — appears to be the leading factor in COVID-19 spread among student-athletes. “The majority of sports-related spread of COVID-19 appears to occur from social contact, not during sports participation,” the NFHS said Tuesday.  After analyzing more than six months of data from the CDC and dozens of state associations regarding high school sports, the NFHS has adapted its “statement on risk of COVID-19 during high school sports.” In May 2020, the NFHS released a tiered system of risk for high school sports, including low, medium and high risk. The NFHS has ended the tiered system, and the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee has developed five risk factors that state associations should consider when assessing the potential for COVID-19 transmission in high school sports. … rest of story at https://www.goerie.com/story/sports/2021/02/03/nfhs-updates-how-assess-risk-covid-19-transmission-high-school-sports/4372909001/?mc_cid=653cd27934&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
AND NFHS ELIMINATES RISK TIERS IN REVISED GUIDANCE ON COVID-19 TRANSMISSION FOR HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 2, 2021) – After evaluating experiences of schools participating in high school sports during the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) has revised its May 2020 guidance document with a new “Statement on Risk of COVID-19 During High School Sports.”
Highlighting the revised guidance is the elimination of the tiered “Potential Infection Risk by Sport” that placed sports in high-, medium- and low-risk categories. Instead, the SMAC suggests that state associations and other stakeholders consider five factors in assessing potential for COVID-19 transmission in high school sports. Two of those factors are that prevailing community infection rates appear to be the strongest predictor for high school athletes being infected, and proven cases of direct COVID-19 transmission during athletics remain relatively rare. … rest of the story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2021/February/02/NFHS-eliminates-risk-tiers-for-high-school-sports-during-COVID?mc_cid=e1d5a94c45&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – (Maine) Fate of high school wrestling season remains undetermined as MPA again delays decision
Maine Principals’ Association postpones meeting with community sports guidelines unchanged and wrestling still considered ‘high risk.’
The Maine Principals’ Association announced Monday that it was again delaying a decision on the status of a high school wrestling season in Maine this winter. The MPA announced on Feb. 3 that it would make a decision on Feb. 22, but assistant director Mike Bisson — who serves on the wrestling committee — said everything is on hold unless the state’s community sports guidelines change. The state’s Department of Economic and Community Development characterizes wrestling as a high-risk sport. Bisson also acknowledged he is “less optimistic” that there will be a season than he was on Feb. 3, but said the MPA is still hoping to arrange something. “We’re just buying time (so that) hopefully as things change over time, things are constantly evolving, that it might allow for us to have a wrestling season,” Bisson said. “…Wrestling is a Level 2 activity, meaning they can do physically distanced practice only. Until that changes, nothing changes for us. We’re going to follow the state guidelines.” … rest of story at https://www.centralmaine.com/2021/02/22/fate-of-high-school-wrestling-season-remains-undetermined-as-mpa-again-delays-decision/

5 } – Washington Association Notes: Lillie to get college opportunity; De La Rosa turns to FCA
Lillie is Ready for Next Level
Only the realization of a lifelong ambition to become the first member of his family to attend college by virtue of accepting a wrestling scholarship could ease the pain Yusief Lillie felt when it became clear he would not have the chance to chase his fourth high-school state championship in the upside-down 2020-21 season. On Jan. 2, Lillie signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his wrestling career at Utah Valley University, where he will compete at 125 pounds for the Wolverines. “I was pretty upset because at first because the high school season isn’t really going to happen,” Lillie said. “But then I realized how much better I’m getting. I’ve been working one-on-one with (Team Aggression co-founder) Geoff Kaylor, and with school being different and everything I can train like that a lot more. And a college scholarship was always part of the plan.” Lillie, who is the son of Gregory Lillie and Damaris Diaz, and the brother of Adanesne, 21, and Amanda, 11, said the feeling he got when he visited the UVU campus in Orem and the tone of the recruiting message from Wolverines assistant coaches Ethen Lofthouse and Erkin Tadzhimetov convinced him Utah Valley was the right fit for him. The fact that a pair of friends from Washington, Vancouver’s Danny Snediker and Spokane’s Braxton Mikesell are already at UVU didn’t hurt, either. “We are excited to have Yusief join the Wolverine family,” Utah Valley coach Greg Williams said in a press release announcing Lillie’s signing. “He is a dedicated student-athlete that has high goals in all areas of his life. He embraces tough challenges and has the work ethic and unwavering focus to be successful here. … rest of story at https://www.win-magazine.com/2021/02/02/washington-association-notes-lillie-to-get-more-opportunity-de-la-rosa-turns-to-fca/?mc_cid=e1d5a94c45&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b#utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=washington-association-notes-lillie-to-get-more-opportunity-de-la-rosa-turns-to-fca

6 } – Wrestling with adversity: Madison’s Nate Barrett overcomes obstacles in quest for another state berth
MADISON TOWNSHIP — Robin Barrett understands better than most the hardships her son, Nate, has overcome these past few years. As Madison’s unofficial photographer of record, Robin has had a ringside seat for all of Nate’s euphoric highs and soul-crushing lows — and there have been more of the latter than the former. “The kid has dealt with some adversity,” Robin says matter-of-factly from the floor of Wayne E. Miller Gymnasium, where she is snapping photos of Nate and his wrestling teammates during Saturday’s Madison Duals. That Nate Barrett has overcome all the curve balls life has thrown his way is a testament to his perseverance and determination. They are character traits that serve him well on the wrestling mat. … rest of story at https://www.richlandsource.com/sports/wrestling-with-adversity-madisons-nate-barrett-overcomes-obstacles-in-quest-for-another-state-berth/article_b3fe6614-635f-11eb-a524-97c145a871bf.html?mc_cid=8755157a86&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – Prep athletes of the week: Wayzata’s Cael Swensen sets school wrestling record for wins
The senior 152-pounder was named after Olympic gold medalist, undefeated four-time NCAA champion and current Penn State coach Cael Sanderson
With the first name of Cael, it stood to reason that wrestling success was in his future. The senior 152-pounder, named after Olympic gold medalist, undefeated four-time NCAA champion and current Penn State coach Cael Sanderson, set the Wayzata school record for career victories with the 198th of his career. That broke the mark set by Weston Droegemueller. Normally Swensen, the 2020 Class 3A 138-pound champion, likes to extend matches and score points to work on his craft. But he said he made short work of the record-setting match because he knew its magnitude. “I get a lot of takedowns and work on stuff, but I knew there was going to be an announcement, so I got it over quick.,” he said of his 14-second victory. “This was a goal I set as a sixth-grader, so it’s pretty awesome to accomplish it.” Swensen said his namesake is his favorite wrestler, followed by David Taylor, who was coached by Sanderson and won two NCAA titles. Swensen even patterns his style after them and leans heavily on the ankle pick, Sanderson’s signature move and one also perfected by Taylor. … rest of story at https://www.startribune.com/prep-athletes-of-the-week-wayzata-s-cael-swensen-sets-school-wrestling-record-for-wins/600020656/?mc_cid=82bfd879a8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b&refresh=true

8 } – (Georgia) 403 AND COUNTING: Bartolotta hits 400th win as historic wrestling year continues
Brunswick High’s wrestling coach, Tommy Bartolotta, earned his 403rd victory on Saturday during the State Duals meet in Atlanta as he is 403-79 in his career. That win marks another historic moment for the Pirates’ wrestling team this season. They won their first-ever region championship and finished fourth overall at duals — the highest finish in school history. He’s in his 22nd year of coaching and his third at Brunswick. Bartolotta’s journey kind of comes full circle as he earned his 100th win during his stint at Glynn Academy and last Wednesday earned his 400th career victory over Wayne County. He finished with a 114-26 overall recording at Glynn, including three area titles, and qualified for the State Duals five times. Everywhere Bartolotta’s coach, success seems to follow. “I think is a great accomplishment for a coach — 100 wins, 200 wins, 300 wins, 400 wins — it just shows your passion and longevity for the sport,” Brunswick High assistant coach Larry Insalaco said. “To be able to stay in it and be that productive and be consistent, and win every year to achieve that goal so quickly in your coaching career. … rest of story at https://thebrunswicknews.com/sports/local_sports/403-and-counting-bartolotta-hits-400th-win-as-historic-wrestling-year-continues/article_465181d8-7d8d-5086-8927-8f72460eca96.html?mc_cid=653cd27934&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
AND Broken nose, fingers don’t keep Richmond Hill wrestler Tate Evans from state crown
When the going gets tough, the tough get going is an old cliché, but Richmond Hill senior Tate Evans lived up to it when he won the 170-pound class in the GHSA Class 6A traditional wrestling state tournament Friday night at the Macon Coliseum. Evans toughed his way through a broken nose and two broken fingers to claim the state title and the Wildcats had five of 12 wrestlers place as they claimed third place in the 6A meet won by Buford. The Wolves had won the state duals earlier this season to claim both state championships, a feat last accomplished by Richmond Hill in 2017. Sophomore Colin Dragon (28-7) was the runner-up at 106 pounds, while Anthony Taylor was third at 160 pounds, Jackson Crawford was fifth at 126 and Dylan Tucker was fifth at 182. … rest of story at https://www.savannahnow.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2021/02/13/richmond-hill-wrestling-georgia-state-champion-tate-evans-and-results/4473860001/?mc_cid=a6cfb4b322&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Wilner sees Sun Devils wrestling as strong now, and getting stronger
Max Wilner wants to be part of something that already is big and still growing. That’s why the Fountain Valley High senior wrestler signed Wednesday with Arizona State. “It’s a great program that’s on the rise,” Wilner said. “They’ve got a good connection going with recent California recruits.” The program at Arizona State, which is No. 10 in the NCAA rankings, includes former Trabuco Hills High standout Trey Munoz, who was a state champion and the Register’s Orange County Boys Wrestler of the Year in 2019. Wilner was CIF Southern Section Northern Division champion in 2020 at 160 pounds. He finished fifth in the CIF State meet last year. Wilner will wrestle at 182 pounds this season, if there is a season. This school year Wilner has made a couple of training trips to Arizona. 10 } – CHSAA moves state wrestling tournament to Pueblo
The Colorado high school wrestling state championships will be held at Southwest Motors Events Center on March 12-13.

The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) announced Wednesday that its Board of Directors voted to approved the relocation of the wrestling state tournament, which is typically held annually at Pepsi Center — now named Ball Arena, to the Southwest Motors Events Center in Pueblo. Normally a three-day event, this year’s wrestling tournament will be condensed to two and held March 12-13. AND Columbine wrestling continues the legacy Ray Barron built
LAKEWOOD — Thursday night in Lakewood High School’s gym was the first match for Columbine’s wrestling team without Ray Barron. The legendary prep wrestling coach passed away last October after a battle with brain cancer. “I loved having him with me. It was one of the things we did together was coach,” said Luke Barron, Ray’s son and now co-head wrestling coach with John Alley. “But he was still with me tonight. He is always with me.” Columbine senior Zach Schraeder, left, listens to coach John Alley during a match Thursday night at Lakewood High School. (Dennis Pleuss/Jeffco Athletics) Ray Barron finished his 50 years of coaching on top with Jack Forbes and Zach Schraeder winning individual state championship titles for the Rebels last February at Pepsi Center in Denver. Forbes took the Class 5A 182-pound state title and Schraeder won the heavyweight match. “That always comes back to me over-and-over again in my head,” Schraeder said of being the last wrestler Ray Barron coached at the state tournament. WATERFORD — Siblings were among the 13 gold-medal recipients during Saturday’s District 10 section 4-AA wrestling tournament. Siblings as in sister-brother, not brother-brother. Fort LeBoeuf lightweights Andie and Jojo Przybycien added to the uniqueness of this season’s PIAA postseason meets, which will all have been streamlined because of COVID-19 concerns.
