1 } – Wrestling In The Time Of COVID-19 – The Complete Coach’s Handbook
Not only will following these guidelines help to keep you and your athletes safe, it’ll keep you covered from a liability standpoint. Of course, good coaches go beyond ticking boxes. Putting athlete welfare at the forefront of your season doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice development. Successful wrestling in the time of COVID might be a bit of a balancing act. But when done correctly, you’ll inspire the type of buy-in from athletes (and their parents) that translates to an aggressive, technical, and committed program.
That being said, here are 7 key steps you can take today – pulled straight from “Wrestling In The Time Of COVID-19 – The Complete Coach’s Handbook” – to get started down the right path.
The complete Handbook can be downloaded at this site … rest of story at https://www.attackstylewrestling.com/wrestling-in-time-of-covid-19/?mc_cid=c19dc39a02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – Southern ARIZONA Wrestling Preview: Sunnyside moved to D-I; 14 individual champions return
The winter season is slated to start on January 18 and the regular season ending on March 5. All AIA sport modifications are required and are not up to each high school to decide. For wrestling, there will be no invitationals or regional tournaments. Teams cannot leave the state to compete in tournaments. In addition, fans will not be allowed at meets until metrics are determined.
Salpointe and Catalina Foothills have opted out of wrestling this year.
LINK: COMPLETE WINTER MODIFICATIONS
Sunnyside brought home its 33rd state title last year by putting up 277.5 points which is the third most in Arizona history. The Blue Devils hold six of the top eight scoring totals including the state record of 282 scored in 2000. The Blue Devils held off Mountain View 277.5 to 176 to capture the Division II championship held in Prescott Valley.  … rest of story at http://allsportstucson.com/2020/12/30/southern-arizona-wrestling-preview-sunnyside-moved-to-d-i-14-individual-champions-return/?mc_cid=e4f16a9e0e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – (New Jersey) Wrestlers, coaches hopeful COVID doesn’t take away trips to A.C.
Most wrestlers in the state have one goal in common each winter: to reach the podium at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
But that might not be possible this season.
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association pushed back all winter sports, with wrestling practices not permitted to begin until March 1 and competition tentatively scheduled for March 16 to April 24.
Cape-Atlantic League schools can wrestle up to 15 conference-only matches. Some leagues, like the Shore Conference, have not announced scheduling specifics. For now, only dual-matches are permitted in the state. … rest of story at https://pressofatlanticcity.com/sports/high-school/wrestlers-coaches-hopeful-covid-doesnt-take-away-trips-to-a-c/article_651979aa-1dd9-5156-a6a6-a587f44e7957.amp.html?mc_cid=3c167aa54c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – (Nebraska) 2021 AAU Winter Nationals Preview
AAU Wrestling will return to the mat this weekend in Ralston, Nebraska with 2021’s Winter Nationals. Despite the challenges the pandemic has presented in hosting a tournament of this caliber, tournament director Daniel Vacha has seen substantial early-entry numbers. As of Monday, wrestlers from 18 states, some as far as Georgia and Florida, have already registered. “I have also seen a large number of teams bringing their whole team. We have 10 teams bringing over 20 wrestlers and four teams with 40 wrestlers each”, Vacha says.
To accommodate local COVID-19 restrictions, there will be several modifications in the tournament’s format. There will be three, three and a half-hour sessions on Saturday to account for the wrestlers and their spectators. In between, each will be a 90-minute break for sanitation purposes. The tournament format will also see most of the early round concluded on Saturday with placement matches for most brackets on Sunday.  In 2020, the tournament debuted its electronic tapper system. This will be used again in 2021 and is a feature that other events may look to adopt as they increase safety measures. … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/aau-wrestling/2021-aau-winter-nationals-preview/79720?mc_cid=3c167aa54c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – Wrestling’s elite – rankings the top wrestlers in ARIZONA history
The history of Arizona wrestling is unique and pretty special. We can’t match the history and depth midwestern powers of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Iowa, Minnesota, and the like, simply because of a lack of population and popularity.
With that said, Arizona can build a strong case with an Olympic champion (Henry Cejudo), an Olympic team member (Billy Rosado) who missed out because of the 1980 boycott, UFC Champions (Cain Velazquez, Justin Gaethje (interim), Cejudo), national high school champions (numerous including Roman Bravo-Young), a triple-crown winner (Danny Vega), NCAA National champions (Anthony Robles, Eric Larkin, Eddie Urbano, etc.), Outstanding wrestler awards at NCAA tournament (Robles), a Hodge Trophy winner (Larkin) as the NCAA wrestler of the Year, members of Arizona State’s 1988 national championship team (Thom Ortiz, Jim Gressly, Chip Parks) and have a motion picture made about their life (Robles – Unstoppable – there is no release date). … rest of story at https://arizonavarsity.rivals.com/news/wrestling-s-elite-rankings-the-top-wrestlers-in-arizona-history?mc_cid=b46d50bbf8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – (California) Dominic Mendez, Righetti’s standout wrestler, grapples with distance training and distance learning
Righetti sophomore wrestler Dominic Mendez’s goal before the 2019-20 season started was to place in the top eight at the 2020 CIF State Tournament. He did just that, finishing fourth at 108 pounds in the state tournament at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield. “I placed fourth, so that was good,” Mendez said by phone. The Righetti sophomore was the Mountain League champion at 108 pounds. Mendez won at the CIT meet at Morro Bay early in the year. The Morro Bay meet regularly draws some of the top wrestlers in the state. Mendez finished seventh at 108 pounds at the Doc Buchanan Invitational in Clovis, an even more prestigious meet, later in the season. Participation in the Doc Buchanan meet is by invitation only.
“That’s a tough meet,” said Mendez. “A lot of the top kids, from California and out of state, wrestle there.” Mendez said, “About two weeks before the Doc Buchanan meet I started training harder because that’s when the tougher meets started.” … rest of story at https://lompocrecord.com/b/dominic-mendez-righettis-standout-wrestler-grapples-with-distance-training-and-distance-learning/article_1851a276-9932-522c-996e-190f5cc2d5e6.html?mc_cid=6915204714&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – (Illinois) #190 Mike Bukovsky – Led Montini to 8 Team State Championships
ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Mike Bukovsky created the Montini Wrestling Dynasty.  He led the Broncos to 8 Illinois team state titles, a 397-35 record and coached 3 different 4x state champions. A ridiculous resume to say the least. Today, Coach Bu leads the Montini Football program.
In this episode we talk about

8 } – The Men Behind Western IOWA Wrestling
The men who started or guided high school wrestling programs in their early years in northwest Iowa made up for what they lacked in experience with fierce determination that often transferred itself to their wrestlers.
Lacking the tradition programs on the eastern side of the state had built, coaches like Kingsley-Pierson’s Rich Krosch, Maple Valley’s Dick Kingsbury and Ida Grove’s Herb Irgens went about building their programs in the 1960s through two hallmarks of wrestling: Hard work and dedication.
They were all members of the Maple Valley Conference — Holstein, Ida Grove, Kingsley-Pierson, Lawton-Bronson, Maple Valley, West Monona, Westwood and Wooodbury Central. The early years helped lay the foundation for programs that now find consistent success on the state’s biggest stage.
The facilities may not have been ideal and the days were long, but more than a half century later the coaches speak with the same fire and fondness for their programs and wrestlers. Krosch gets K-P going
Krosch started the Kingsley-Pierson wrestling program with his brother, Stan, in 1965 having wrestled in high school in Elmore, Minnesota. He would go on to work out on occasion with the wrestling team at Mankato State College before finding his way to Iowa where he was asked to lead the wrestling program because of his experience in the sport. … rest of story at https://www.thepredicament.com/2020/11/the-men-behind-western-iowa-wrestling/?mc_cid=46ecd7f19c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – (Texas) UIL postpones wrestling indefinitely
Wrestling coaches around the state are getting somewhat of a taste of how spring coaches felt almost a year ago. Around Dec. 17, the UIL sent out an email to school superintendents and wrestling coaches indefinitely delaying the season. While the spring season ended up getting canceled, wrestling will happen.
It’s just a matter of when and not if. “I just think they need some extra time as far as to develop a plan like how many teams are we going to have at each dual?” Estacado girls wrestling coach Casen DeLucia said. “Are we going to be allowed to have tournaments? If we’re not going to have tournaments, is it just going to be duals until district and so on and so forth.”
In the meantime, programs are still allowed to practice. In some ways, Matadors’ first-year coach Matthew McHugh sees the silver lining to the extra time. … rest of story at https://www.lubbockonline.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2021/01/04/uil-postpones-wrestling-indefinitely/4132253001/?mc_cid=afb669e366&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

10 } – (Kansas) KSHSAA postseason wrestling changes meet with mixed reviews
The postseason for high school wrestling in Kansas will have quite a different look this year because of COVID-19 considerations. Very different, in fact. In order to avoid the large gatherings that traditionally accompany postseason wrestling regional and state tournaments, the Kansas State High School Activities Association completely revamped the format for qualifying for the state tournament as well as the state tournament itself. A fixture at the end of February for years, the road to the state tournament now begins in early February for Class 4A and below and girls’ programs, which now will be split into two Divisions (6A/5A in Division I and 4A/3A/2A/1A in Division II). Two-day regionals and state tournaments have been reduced to one-day settings with fields reduced at those tourneys by the addition of district and sub-state rounds. Naturally, the new-look format approved by the KSHSAA Executive Board was met with mixed reactions.
“I respect those that have placed time and energy into developing what they feel is the best postseason tournament format for wrestling, Shawnee Heights coach Chad Parks said. “I can’t say that I’m a fan of the format, but I will state that I’m grateful we get a postseason and we plan to make the best of it … rest of story at https://www.cjonline.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2021/01/04/postseason-wrestling-changes-meet-mixed-reviews/4129059001/?mc_cid=afb669e366&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

11 } – Why is GEORGIA wrestling on our minds?
Cliff Fretwell had no intention of getting involved in wrestling. That’s not to say he wasn’t a wrestler and that he didn’t appreciate the sport, but other parts of the world caught his eye.  Fretwell wanted to make his mark in Hollywood. He was getting a degree in 3D animation and design, so he wanted to put his knowledge to use as a special effects coordinator for films. Besides, the dot-com boom had just hit so everyone was eager to get something started with the latest and greatest technology.
Despite all of the online advancements and Fretwell’s expertise with computers, it was a single sheet of paper that would change the direction of his life. His oldest son, Anthony, brought home a flier for middle school wrestling. The coach of the program was among the most respected coaches in Georgia so Fretwell was intrigued by the possibility of getting his son involved.  “That’s how I got back into wrestling during the early 2000s,” Fretwell said. “The more I got involved, the more I saw the divide between middle school and high school, and high school and college. There weren’t enough people involved that cared about growing wrestling in Georgia. “We had 10,000 kids wrestling in Georgia when I was wrestling, but they all sucked. It’s great they’re wrestling, but I wanted them to get better.” … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1610165795337&twSessionId=wvbstjdkts&postId=940312135&mc_cid=c6c3fe425c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

12 } – (Montana) Highly touted college football prospect Zac Crews trades in basketball jersey for wrestling singlet at Missoula Sentinel
MISSOULA — Missoula Sentinel’s Zac Crews had a full smile to flash when he won his high school wrestling debut in the team’s upset win over Missoula Big Sky in the season opener on Tuesday. It was his first competition since he broke one of his front teeth in the football state title game, which capped a season in which he proved himself as one of the top juniors in the state. He picked up full-ride offers from Montana and Montana State during the fall and said he began talking with perennial title-game participant North Dakota State and Eastern Washington. Crews is now tackling wrestling, trying to cut his teeth on the mat as he traded in his basketball jersey for a wrestling singlet. The Spartans basketball team, like the football team, is a state title favorite and includes his older brother Haiden Crews and his friends, but he turned down the lure of another state title to pursue one of his childhood loves. … rest of story at https://406mtsports.com/high-school/wrestling/highly-touted-college-football-prospect-zac-crews-trades-in-basketball-jersey-for-wrestling-singlet-at/article_e9ebf6b2-b872-5979-8ccc-ba516bb6a9ce.html?mc_cid=4a4f0e7778&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – Family, determination and a dream: The Real Woods story
If you click pause at the split second right after redshirt sophomore Real Woods pins his opponent down, right before he springs up to pound his chest in victory, you might be able to see the tattoo on his upper back peeking out of his Cardinal singlet. It’s a W, symbolizing Woods, the family name, struck through by two linked diamond shapes, representing sacrifice.  “We’re all gonna do it,” Woods said about getting the tattoo. “All the boys in the family.” For Woods, family is everything, and sacrifice is the norm. To get to Stanford, he had to give up four years with his family for a chance to wrestle against elite competition, forego carefree high school afternoons for tireless hours in the gym and leave his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, for … rest of story at https://www.stanforddaily.com/2020/12/13/the-real-woods-story/?mc_cid=2646a1a5c8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – Sophomore Cole Urbas stepping into leadership role for Penn wrestling
Urbas qualified for the NCAA Championships as a rookie last season
Cole Urbas has been wrestling for as long as he can remember. “When I was around five, we got a letter in the mail from the local wrestling club, and I thought it was going to be something like WWE, so I signed up,” Urbas said.  When asked how it compares to WWE now that he actually knows what it is like, Urbas laughed.
“It’s way better. It’s way more beautiful,” he said. “And it’s real.”

Despite considering wrestling just another sport among the many that he took part in when he entered high school, Urbas realized how much he truly loved wrestling as time went on. “At first, I really didn’t know how it was going to turn out for me and it was something that I did. I was a wrestler, I went to wrestling practice. I worked hard, I was someone that did the extra,” he said. “And then my sophomore year I really broke out and separated myself from the pack and people realized that I was going to be something special.” … rest of story at https://www.thedp.com/article/2020/11/penn-wrestling-cole-urbas-leadership-sophomore-ncaa-championships?mc_cid=638194e439&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – Best of Both Worlds
Despite ending his collegiate career as a Penn State wrestling legend, Nico Megaludis always knew he was destined for more.  A four-time All-American, Megaludis enjoyed one of Penn State’s most successful lightweight careers. And while he could’ve relied on the achievements granted through his time as a Nittany Lion, the former 125-pounder desperately wanted to help others achieve their own personal goals.
So, when he wasn’t spending ample hours training in Rec Hall, Megaludis studied business administration and finance, before securing a career as a financial planner at Megaludis Financial.
“I like to be busy working out and training still, but I also have a passion for helping people and families with finances,” Megaludis said. “At the same time, I have also had a goal to be the best in the world with wrestling – and I’ve found that my two polar opposite passions actually complement each other. I got the best of both worlds and I’m pretty busy, but I like it that way.”  After rounding out a successful collegiate tenure with a first-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden, Megaludis pursued a career on the international wrestling circuit. Already having so many achievements notched on his belt, he then set out to cinch an allusive Olympic gold medal. … rest of story at https://gopsusports.com/news/2020/12/3/wrestling-best-of-both-worlds.aspx?mc_cid=29548697b5&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

BOONE, N.C. — With five preseason all-conference selections among the 10 weight classes, App State Wrestling has been voted the preseason favorite to win the Southern Conference.
The preseason poll and all-conference selections came from voting by the league’s nine head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own teams or student-athletes. 8 } – Riley Shaw: When Love Meets Perseverance
Written by: Justin Lee
Love is an indescribable feeling that’s often difficult to put into words or perspective. Most of us struggle with expressing our love, as it is a challenge for us to open up with our words. That’s why many of us express our love through our actions or gestures to show our appreciation for what and for whom we love. Former Cleveland State University wrestler Riley Shaw is a fine example of this as he demonstrated love and passion for his alma mater through his actions. Now, his love begins at home with his wife, Anna, and young son, Frazier, but CSU remains close to home as one quickly gathers from his aptly-named dogs—his pit bull Vike and his retriever mix Magnus.
Shaw started wrestling at the age of eight and was a multi-sport athlete in high school, playing football and competing in the shot put and discus for his track team along with wrestling. Although he was a great high school wrestler, Shaw’s focus was not always on the mat. “If I had my pick, I would have played football in college. It didn’t happen because I was too slow,” Shaw said, laughing! Though his initial dreams of playing on the gridiron didn’t happen, Shaw was recruited by colleges for all three sports before eventually deciding to wrestle at Cleveland State. … rest of story at https://csuvikings.prestosports.com/sports/m-wrestl/2020-21/releases/20201223kc1lqc?mc_cid=e4f16a9e0e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

10 } – PITT’S JAKE WENTZEL EARNS ACC, NATIONAL WEEKLY AWARDS
PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh senior wrestler and team captain Jake Wentzel received two significant weekly awards Tuesday following his impressive season debut on Sunday at Navy.
A native of South Park, Pa., Wentzel was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week for the first time in his career and also received National College Wrestler of the Week honors from The Open Mat.
Wentzel’s recognition resulted from his outstanding and pivotal performance in Pitt’s 22-14 dual victory over the Midshipmen on Sunday evening in Annapolis.  Facing Navy’s No. 7-ranked Tanner Skidgel at 165 pounds, Wentzel stepped up when Pitt needed a spark in the dual, earning an individual victory over a Top-10 opponent by a 5-2 decision while accumulating nearly two minutes of riding time in the process.
That result helped the No. 14-ranked Panthers turn around a 14-3 deficit against Navy. After Wentzel’s win shifted momentum, Pitt’s upper weights won the next four matches to secure the team victory. … rest of story at https://pittsburghpanthers.com/news/2021/1/5/wrestling-pitts-jake-wentzel-earns-acc-national-weekly-awards.aspx?mc_cid=afb669e366&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

11 } – For Iowa wrestler Spencer Lee, 2020 Hodge Trophy represents 2021 motivation
IOWA CITY, Ia. — The Hodge Trophy is truly a marvel up-close. The wooden base has wrestlers at each corner, all with their left hands lunging forward, attacking. The body is all bronze, a slim neck with a small bowl. A chiseled man stands at attention on top.
Spencer Lee finally held his version of the award Tuesday. He was formally presented with the 2020 Hodge Trophy, given annually by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine to the most dominant college wrestler. Had his name on it and everything. Lee, now a senior — crazy, right? — smiled and posed for pictures. Make no mistake, this moment was well-earned after his remarkable 2019-20 season. He won a Big Ten title with an 18-0 record. Changes come as DII’s budget faces challenges with COVID-19 testing, limited fan attendance
The Division II Administrative Committee on Monday approved a recommendation to reduce bracket and field sizes for the 2021 Division II winter and spring championships. The reductions were made to alleviate expected budget shortfalls, specifically as the Division II  budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year faces challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The field and bracket size reductions of the 18 Division II 2021 winter and spring championships vary by sport, with 12 of them being reduced by 25%. The reductions, listed below, were initially recommended by each sport committee. The Division II Championships Committee and the Division II Planning and Finance Committee each approved the recommendations. 7 } – Lindenwood, McKendree primed for big seasons in NCAA Division II wrestling
Lindenwood University wrestling coach Jimmy Rollins isn’t sure what to expect when his squad opens the season on January 10. Then again, because of the coronavirus pandemic, no other teams do either. “At this point, all we can do is focus on being safe — wearing masks, keeping our distance, washing our hands — and trying to enjoy what we’re doing,” Rollins said. “We have a lot of work in front of us and I hope we get that opportunity. “I think our guys have come to realize a true appreciation for getting the chance to practice and to compete in the sport they love.”
Thanks to an NCAA ruling, this will be a free season regarding athletes’ eligibility. The Lions will be tested once a week and will face multiple opponents in most competitions. In an effort to limit virus exposure during workouts, Lindenwood is training in multiple pods. “It’s more work for the coaches, but that’s what you have to do to make sure everyone’s safe,” said Rollins, whose team’s schedule is highlighted by a Jan. 30 trip to Iowa to square off against Division I program Iowa State. … rest of story at https://www.stltoday.com/sports/college/lindenwood-mckendree-primed-for-big-seasons-in-ncaa-division-ii-wrestling/article_91fde950-31f3-5c8d-8d97-c84e7420ac0c.html?mc_cid=1dba1d3746&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

1 } – D1 Insider: Hawkeyes hoping to see title pursuit through to the finish this year
Iowa wrestling fans who’d waited a decade to watch their team ransack its way to another NCAA championship figured they’d only need to bear nine more days. More than 10 months after the 2019-20 season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, their wait continues. Now they have another shot, perhaps just as good. The Hawkeyes have nearly all the pieces back from a team that was rarely challenged a year ago, and coach Tom Brands isn’t going to take any of this time for granted. Neither are his wrestlers, who’ve been in their own little bubbles for weeks where Brands has seen them take virus protocols seriously since they began workouts. The virus might be this team’s biggest hurdle. The spread of COVID-19 wiped out last year’s tournament just nine days before it was to start at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The Hawkeyes were set to send their entire lineup, complete with three No. 1 seeds into the finale. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1610165795337&twSessionId=wvbstjdkts&postId=945768135&mc_cid=c6c3fe425c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – OSU wrestling: Beavers get the season started under first-year coach Chris Pendleton
Taking over as the head coach of a college program is difficult enough in normal circumstances.  Doing so during a global pandemic presents a different set of challenges entirely.  Such is the case for Chris Pendleton, who was hired as Oregon State’s head wrestling coach in April and arrived in Corvallis ready to provide a spark for a historically successful program that has struggled recently.  But he wasn’t even able to meet his athletes until mid-summer, and the Beavers were not able to get into the wrestling room until November.  “That was a unique challenge where you are off the mat for six to eight months. For some of these guys, they haven’t done that since they were five years old,” Pendleton said. “I looked at myself and was saying, ‘When was the last time I was off the mat for even two months?’” It’s been a long time coming, but the Beavers have finally reached the start of the season; … rest of story at https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/wrestling/osu-wrestling-beavers-get-the-season-started-under-first-year-coach-chris-pendleton/article_8e1e8687-61ca-5d21-ae69-6a921032cc94.html?mc_cid=c6c3fe425c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – ‘Hungry, focused, gritty’ Northern Iowa wrestling team ready to turn heads in 2021
The Northern Iowa wrestling team took team pictures earlier this week, and Lance Runyon, a redshirt freshman, was so excited for the coming season that he tried on three different singlets. Because why not, right? “I’m super excited,” said Runyon, a 2019 state champion for Southeast Polk. “I’m ready to go, and I’m glad it’s finally here.” Northern Iowa officially begins its 2021 season this weekend, with a Sunday tri-dual against South Dakota State and North Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. It will be the Panthers’ first competition in 308 days, the last being the 2020 Big 12 Championships in March.
So Runyon’s excitement is well-taken, especially considering an injury shortened his redshirt season a year ago. He’s wrestled just five college matches. He is antsy to compete again. His enthusiasm is shared by, well, everybody else. … rest of story at https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/northern-iowa/uni-panthers/2021/01/07/hungry-focused-gritty-northern-iowa-wrestling-team-ready-turn-heads-2021-doug-schwab-brody-teske-uni/6579232002/?mc_cid=4a4f0e7778&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – Franek Wins Twice to Highlight Bison Split Against UNI, SDSU
BROOKINGS, S.D. – No. 13-ranked Jared Franek won both of his matches at 157 pounds to help North Dakota State split a pair of Big 12 Conference wrestling duals Sunday, Jan. 10, at Frost Arena. 8 } –  Iowa State trounces Loras, Nebraska-Kearney in final ‘tune-up’ duals
AMES, Ia. — Iowa State officially started its wrestling season last week, but, if we’re being honest, these first three duals were more tune-ups for the real thing that’s coming next week.  One week after thumping Division III power Wartburg, the Cyclones improved to 3-0 by bullying both Loras College and Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State opened with a 40-0 win over Loras College, then followed by trouncing Nebraska-Kearney, 38-4. In all, the Cyclones, ranked ninth in Trackwrestling’s latest Division I poll, won 19 of the 20 contested matches on Sunday. They scored three major decisions, two technical falls and a pin to blank Division III Loras, then rolled up three more pins to soundly beat Nebraska-Kearney, one of Division II’s top teams. … rest of story at https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/iowa-state/wrestling/2021/01/10/wrestling-iowa-state-trounces-loras-nebraska-kearney-cyclones-hilton-coliseum-kevin-dresser-isu-ames/6615275002/?mc_cid=ee9459dd97&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – Northern Iowa begins 2021 season with wins over South Dakota State and North Dakota State
There was a lot of unknown about the Northern Iowa wrestling team entering the 2021 season, but if this weekend’s results were any indication, these next few months could be pretty fun in Cedar Falls. The Panthers registered two dual victories on Sunday, topping both South Dakota State and North Dakota State in a tri-meet in Brookings, S.D. Laras bring brotherhood to UNI wrestling
CEDAR FALLS — Brothers Triston and Cayd Lara have leaned heavily on each other for physical and emotional support for as long as they both can remember. There’s always a certain bond among siblings, but the Laras treat family like oxygen. That unconditional connection was instilled at an early age within both the Dodger wrestling program and the Fort Dodge community. It’s a kinship they’ve continued to cultivate under head coach Doug Schwab at the University of Northern Iowa.

10 } – College wrestling: Cyclone freshmen show promise in dual wins
AMES — Iowa State wrestling’s freshmen haven’t looked like freshmen early in the season. On Sunday in Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State’s freshmen shined as the Cyclones beat Loras and Nebraska-Kearney 40-0 and 38-4, respectively. True freshmen Kysen Terukina (125), Zach Redding (133), Cam Robinson (149) and Yonger Bastida (197) all won both of their matches. Terukina, Redding and Robinson all won their second match of the day against Nebraska-Kearney thanks to some late-match heroics. Terukina and Robinson both got takedowns in the third period to win 6-4 and 9-7, respectively. Redding won in sudden victory, 7-5. “It was special to see them win late,” heavyweight Gannon Gremmel said. … rest of story at https://wcfcourier.com/sports/college/isu/college-wrestling-cyclone-freshmen-show-promise-in-dual-wins/article_d17af059-fb74-5a37-b6d7-38f80b824925.html?mc_cid=01186bea70&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

OSU won big in its first two duals inside GIA
The Cowboys had their first duals in Gallagher-Iba on Sunday and knocked off Chattanooga 32-9 then Oregon State 29-8. Here are my five thoughts on the performance.
1. Freshmen off to a good start
If you’ve been following my writing on here for a while you’ve seen how much I’ve raved about the 2020 recruiting class the Cowboys brought in. Possibly John Smith’s best ever. And they’re performing well so far. OSU started three of them. At 125 with Trevor Mastrogiovanni, 174 with Dustin Plott, and 197 with AJ Ferrari. The group went 6-0 and Plott and Ferrari scored bonus points in each of their matches. … rest of story at https://pistolsfiringblog.com/osu-wrestling-five-thoughts-on-oregon-state-ut-chattanooga-duals/?mc_cid=01186bea70&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

1 } – ‘She’s like my sister’: York-Adams national champion girls’ wrestlers commit to same college
Tiffani Baublitz and Montana DeLawder live about 45 miles and 80 minutes away from each other, and that’s not the only difference between the wrestlers.  Baublitz works at an ice cream shop while DeLawder works on a goat farm.  Baublitz is a middle-weight wrestler while DeLawder competes at the lighter weights.  Baublitz has focused on tournament competitions rather than PIAA ones in high school, while DeLawder has been a four-year varsity wrestler for her school.  Still, there are some similarities.
For starters, they both work for family-run operations
“She always messes with me that I have to scoop goat droppings and she gets to scoop ice cream,” DeLawder said. “We like to goof around with each other a lot.” And of course, there’s the whole wrestling connection … … rest of story at https://www.ydr.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2020/12/18/piaa-wrestling-montana-delawder-and-tiffani-baublitz-commit-king/3928097001/?mc_cid=ed5fd11129&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

A below-radar phenomenon during the past decade has been the growth in girls’ and women’s wrestling. In 2019-20, Augsburg’s Emily Shilson was the NCAA, WCWA (all colleges), Junior Nationals and USA Wrestling Under-23 champion at 109/110 pounds.

4 } – Historic season for Utah’s prep girls wrestling
Even with the challenges associated with COVID-19, it’s been a historic season for high school girls wrestlers from across the state of Utah. You see, this is the first academic year girls wrestling has been sanctioned by the UHSAA. One program that has generated a lot of interest is Mountain Crest, which already has 32 athletes on its roster. Wrestling has always been popular at the Hyrum-based school, but even head coach Janae Liljenquist wasn’t expecting this kind of turnout for a first-year program. “It just came down to getting the girls fired up,” Liljenquist said. “They just needed to be motivated and know that this is was opportunity of a lifetime to be on the first girls wrestling team at Mountain Crest … and so I think that motivated them. A lot of them had never stepped on a mat before. I think originally when (the school) brought me in, I think they had six girls who were interested and we (held) kind of a meet and greet, and I just told them about my background and how excited I am for them. And since then, it just grew from six to like 16, to even more. And even after we did the orange and blue tournament, we had two girls show up (to practice next week) because they saw it and they saw what the girls were doing.” … rest of story at https://www.hjnews.com/sports/school/historic-season-for-utah-s-prep-girls-wrestling-programs/article_e4ff2bce-50cc-5b4f-a676-4cb3c9cbb32d.html?mc_cid=e96ed12e50&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

The December 22nd installment of Nittany Lion Wrestling Club events will feature NLWC wrestlers Jane Valencia and Jennifer Page up against their opponents Xochitl Mota-Pettis and Emma Bruntil.
Xochitl Mota-Pettis vs Jane Valencia
Xochitl Mota-Pettis (Rise Wrestling) made a lot of noise at 57kg this fall. But even just last year there were telltale signs of her progression. In the summer of 2019, Mota-Pettis was the 127-pound Fargo champion. Then in December, she went 4-2 at Senior Nationals where she outwrestled multiple college All-Americans. This October she pinned Alli Ragan, a world silver medalist, in Iowa, and then continued to the finals where she went back and forth with Lauren Louive.  The last time Mota-Pettis was on the mat was in her run to a U23 title over Abby Nette, the No. 3 ranked wrestler on the Senior National Team. … rest of story at https://www.transitionwrestling.com/mota-pettis-valencia-page-and-bruntil-to-wrestle-at-nlwc-no-4/?mc_cid=e96ed12e50&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – New Billings Senior girls wrestling coach Mickey Mahlmeister looking to build ‘great foundation’
BILLINGS — Mickey Mahlmeister has been hired as the head girls wrestling coach at Billings Senior, Billings Public Schools activities director Mark Wahl announced on Tuesday. Girls wrestling is in its first season as a Montana High School Association-sanctioned sport, and the Billings Class AA schools — Senior, Skyview and West — have seen higher-than-expected turnout. That prompted School District 2 to recognize the need for a head girls wrestling coach, who was originally slated to coach the girls from all three schools. However, Wahl said that plan changed, and the district will now be seeking separate coaches for all three schools. … rest of story at https://www.montanasports.com/high-school-sports/wrestling/billings-senior-names-mickey-mahlmeister-girls-wrestling-head-coach?mc_cid=3c167aa54c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

10 } – Girl power: Schmit’s pin powers Bulldogs to dual win
Ella Schmit is considered one of the top girls wrestlers in the country at 106 pounds. Even so, Bettendorf High School wrestling coach Dan Knight had some reservations on how Schmit would fare in a dual on Dec. 17 when he saw Central DeWitt 106-pounder Keaton Kruse come out to the mat. “I’m like, ‘Man, he looks long, big and strong,'” Knight said. It did not faze Schmit. She took Kruse down 33 seconds into the bout, eventually put him on his back and recorded a first-period fall in 1 minute, 29 seconds to help Bettendorf kick off its season with a 50-28 home dual win over Central DeWitt. “It is pretty exciting,” Schmit said. “It definitely is a step up and I’ve got to step up my game to stay at this level. … rest of story at https://qctimes.com/community/bettendorf/girl-power-schmits-pin-powers-bulldogs-to-dual-win/article_b83d37d2-f7f2-55ea-80f9-756b92ed4929.html?mc_cid=6915204714&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

11 } – Women’s College Wrestling Top 25: January 2021 Multi-Division Rankings
This ranking was produced by a team working with AmericanWomensWrestling.com for FloWrestling & AWW. The team includes AWW staff and several coaches representing both NAIA & NCAA programs. What is a “multi-division ranking?” It’s a ranking that combines all divisions of women’s college wrestling—the NAIA, NCAA, NJCAA & NCWA. With the emergence of 86 college programs, along with dozens of clubs, making this Top 25 list is getting harder and harder. There were a lot of very good wrestlers left off the list this round, especially at 109, 123, 130, and 143. Ranking spots 16-25 is the hardest as there’s so many you could make a case for. These multi-division rankings take into account all women’s college national championships—the WCWA, NAIA, NCWA, and the event launched last year for NCAA programs, the National Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Championships. It also takes duals into account when information is available, and this round includes results from the Junior & U23 Nationals held in November. With the pandemic limiting the college competitive schedule, these two USAW events provided great info for college rankings as there were plenty of matchups between ranked women. Many college programs participated in this event as part of their fall college schedule. … rest of story at https://www.americanwomenswrestling.com/news-2/womens-college-wrestling-top-25-january-2021?mc_cid=afb669e366&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

11 } – #1 Iowa and other college programs want complete 2021 NCAA season
By Mike Finn
Tom Brands, like all of his fellow Big Ten Conference wrestling coaches, had to wait until after Christmas to learn when his wrestlers will compete in a shortened 2021 season that began this past week and ends March 20 with the 2021 NCAA Division I Championships at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. College wrestling normally starts in late November and lasts five months in a season that includes early-season individual tournaments — like the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Midlands and Southern Scuffle — but this Division I season will only last two months as teams will only compete in a dual-meet schedule. … rest of story at https://www.win-magazine.com/2021/01/05/1-iowa-and-other-college-programs-want-complete-2021-ncaa-season/?mc_cid=afb669e366&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b#utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=1-iowa-and-other-college-programs-want-complete-2021-ncaa-season

CEDAR RAPIDS — Christian Stanek exudes toughness. Cedar Rapids Xavier’s hard-nosed and relentless two-time state wrestling medalist has found success with a bit of an edge. By the time the holiday break comes, he’ll show more effects of that approach. “If you look at him now, he’s pretty,” Xavier Coach Ryan Chambers said with a laugh. “His face is pretty. You see him in two weeks and he won’t be so pretty, because he leads with his head. He’s just so tough. “He’s real tenacious. He wants to set a lot of records here and part of doing that is being tough.”

5 } – Five high school wrestling dynasties you should know about
There is nothing like winning a prep championship for yourself or for your school. Below are five high school wrestling dynasties you should know about as the season progresses.
Blair Academy (Blairstown, New Jersey)
Although the Buccaneers placed second at the 2020 National Prep Championships, Blair Academy has secured a special place in wrestling history. The Buccaneers won their first prep title in 1974 and added 39 more in the intervening years for a total of 40. Add in eight Blair wrestlers who went on to win 14 NCAA Division I titles, 68 All-American finishes, and Bobby Weaver’s 1984 Olympic gold medal — and you have a high school wrestling dynasty.
St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio)

6 } – Pandemic leads to restrictions for Wisconsin prep wrestlers
LORENCE, Wis. — The COVID-19 pandemic has brought several changes to Wisconsin high school wrestling. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association has restricted wrestling teams to one dual meet every six to seven days. There will be no tournaments or multi-team meets this season. The Florence-Niagara Northwoods Storm wrestling team has entered into a COVID-19 co-op with the Crivitz wrestling team. As of now, the postseason tournament is scheduled for Jan 30. Because of the one dual meet per week rule, the WIAA has granted a one-year COVID-19 co-op for dual meets only. “With us only having a couple healthy wrestlers and only able to wrestle in dual format events, this seemed to be a good opportunity for all,” said Florence athletic director Kris Johnson. Ed Kelley returns as the Storm’s head coach. If the WIAA postseason is still on by the end of the season, the schools will go back to their pre COVID-19 co-op division for postseason competition. Returning to this year’s Storm roster are sophomore Caitlyn Kelley, a sectional qualifier last season, and sophomore Andar Olson. Joining them are sophomore Leonard Hannah and freshman Isaiah Fennessy. … rest of story at https://www.ironmountaindailynews.com/sports/local-sports/2020/12/pandemic-leads-to-restrictions-for-wisconsin-prep-wrestlers/?mc_cid=ed5fd11129&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – ‘I think as a community we should expect more’
Justin Bronson, who has coached and taught at Righetti High School for about 10 years, is hoping to make progress on an issue he’s seen in the Santa Maria Valley. But his work isn’t just beginning. Bronson has long been working to provide more athletic opportunities for those middle school students in the area.
Part I: Where are the junior high sports in the Santa Maria Valley? Justin Bronson campaigns for more opportunities
Recently, Bronson developed a youth wrestling program that consisted of a partnership between high school coaches who would offer their services to local junior highs for a league that was free of charge for students. Still, there was resistance from area school districts to help get the program off the ground. Bronson eventually had to work outside the school districts to get the league off the ground. … rest of story at https://santamariatimes.com/sports/high-school/part-ii-i-think-as-a-community-we-should-expect-more/article_5e6a4e49-7466-5d28-adb9-d16b4f60b2b1.html?mc_cid=ed5fd11129&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

8 } – SPECIAL REPORT: Wrestling with the pandemic
IOWA’S NEWS NOW — More than three decades and 500 dual wins into his career as a high school head wrestling coach (the majority of those years spent at Williamsburg High School), Grant Eckenrod knows how to adjust to change. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t some anxiety about the unknown entering a season amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “Going into the first week of practice, I was a little bit nervous,” Eckenrod says during a mid-week practice in December. “Usually, you’re excited. You’re ready to get the season going. But I was a little bit nervous. Just didn’t want to make a bad decision or do something wrong that may get a kid sick or a coach sick.” “It’s not gonna be perfect,” he says of preparing extra protections against the virus for his team, “but it can be done if you just take every precaution you can, try to do the right things, and hopefully it works out for you.” … rest of story at https://cbs2iowa.com/news/local/special-report-wrestling-with-the-pandemic?mc_cid=4edc48d477&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – Wrestling amid a pandemic has made it a challenge for Vikings on mats
High school wrestlers normally compete 50 or more times during a season with the goal to finish at the state meet. Nothing is normal in 2020. Tennessee High is like everyone else, trying to find matches that haven’t been affected by positive tests or contact tracing related to COVID-19. “Just scrambling, just trying to find anything we possibly can to fill in,” said Tennessee High wrestling coach Tim Marshall, whose Vikings have wrestled in just two meets since the season began, including this past weekend in Elizabethton. “The problem is everybody is in the same situation. Two of the schools that were supposed to be in the tournament this weekend had to cancel because of exposure. “We had one of them scheduled for a dual and that is out too. It is just a constant thing that you have to be willing to roll with the changes as they come. We are going to go from typically a wrestler getting 50 to 55 matches down to 20 or maybe 25 if we are lucky.” … rest of story at https://heraldcourier.com/townnews/sport/prep-wrestling-wrestling-amid-a-pandemic-has-made-it-a-challenge-for-vikings-on-mats/article_cd70aff6-4598-11eb-97d3-9774482d37e3.html?mc_cid=fecb1aa0c2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Journeymen Wrestling Club owner and operator Frank Popolizio is in the process of putting together an April tournament for high school-level New York wrestlers that will be held in Pennsylvania, which currently has its high school and club sports on pause. Popolizio’s prep for the Journeymen New York State Championships is taking place while COVID-19 cases are on the rise both nationally and internationally, and also while COVID-19 vaccinations are starting to take place. “We were able to host an event in November that met all the requirements and protocols,” Popolizio said of the Journeymen Adidas Fall Classic that ran Nov. 21-22 at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim, Pennsylvania. “This event is four months away. [By April], I am pretty sure we’ll be back to pre-surge numbers.” Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf’s executive order on Dec. 10 contains a section dedicated to varsity athletics: “Section 8: Interscholastic athletics, intrascholastic athletics, and intrastate and interstate sports leagues and tournaments are suspended for all sports.” The governor’s order is effective through Jan. 4, 2021. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference’s (CIAC) Board of Control voted Tuesday to postpone the start of the scholastic winter sports season until Tuesday, January 19, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That is the first date that practices could held. With sports requiring 10 days of practices, competition could possibly begin in the first week of February. That’s a glimpse at the uncertainty for college athletes across the country who have had seasons derailed. In some cases, their programs have even been cut altogether as schools react to the health risks and financial ripples of COVID-19. The pandemic has shaken the college sports scene to its core, dealing an emotional blow to athletes as they’re forced to stay on their toes about the status of their careers. CORALVILLE, Iowa – Jaydin Eierman didn’t get everything he wanted at the USA Wrestling Senior Nationals, but the new addition to the University of Iowa roster got a taste of what life as a Hawkeye is all about. Eierman, a graduate transfer preparing for his senior season with the Hawkeyes, emphatically earned a fifth-place finish at 65 kilograms Sunday and endeared himself to Iowa fans in attendance at the Xtream Arena with the aggressive way he attacked throughout the weekend. After losing 10-0 by technical fall to three-time Stanford and Ohio State All-American and top-seeded Joey McKenna in the consolation semifinals, Eierman pinned former Rutgers All-American Matt Kolodzik in his final match of the tournament. After giving up a step out point early in his fifth-place match, Eierman put Kolodzik on his back and recorded the fall in 1 minute, 9 seconds. He finished the tournament with a 5-2 record that included two technical falls, a pair of pins and an appreciation of where he’s at. … rest of story at https://qctimes.com/sports/college/wrestling/eierman-solid-in-iowa-debut-gadson-takes-second/article_fe8ae0dd-c4d8-59b4-bdca-8849fd6b51d1.html?mc_cid=aabea4b794&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

The team’s other postseason opportunity, the NCAA Championships, was canceled soon after.  Seven months later, Nebraska returned by bringing 22 wrestlers to compete in USA Wrestling’s Senior Nationals from Oct. 9-11. This was also two months after the team was able to come back together in Lincoln for training.   “It was great for our sport,” head coach Mark Manning said. “We’ve been training for seven weeks in our facility with no positive tests. It showed that we have a disciplined team and the guys are serious about their craft. Michael Kemerer, a three-time wrestling All-American for the University of Iowa, understands numbers like his 75-7 career record, 41-1 dual mark and 173 dual points scored. But his fascination with numbers has more significance in the classroom. It led Kemerer to earning a bachelor’s degree in finance and he is currently in his third semester of graduate school, pursuing a master’s degree in finance.

Kemerer’s undergraduate and graduate grade-point averages have hovered around 3.3 and 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale).
