1 } – Five Takeaways from OSU Wrestling’s Media Availability
Smith provides some clarity on the upcoming season
Oklahoma State head wrestling coach John Smith spoke with the media this week about the upcoming season and here are five big takeaways from what he had to say.
1. “We’re Definitely Having a Season”
All indications were there would be some sort of season this year but in December, which is normally already the start of the season, we still didn’t even have a schedule from Oklahoma State. So there was still a bit of uncertainty about that. Now we know definitively as John has said “We’re definitely having a season.”
2. It’s going to look a little different
We all knew that this would be the case. Every sport at every school across the country so far has looked different as COVID-19 has ravaged what we’ve been used to seeing in college athletics.
Coach Smith was able to provide some additional clarity on this, stating, “We’re definitely wrestling one day a week. It looks like we’re going to have four home dual meets and be on the road 3-4 times.” … rest of story at https://pistolsfiringblog.com/five-takeaways-from-osu-wrestlings-media-availability/?mc_cid=29548697b5&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
1,995 miles: Travis Wittlake’s Journey from Coos Bay to Stillwater
Coos Bay, Oregon. Population 16,615
One of those residents? Redshirt sophomore wrestler Travis Wittlake Jr.
Wittlake, 20, is a native of the small coastal city in Oregon, a city that is more well-known for fishing than producing wrestling talent, but Wittlake is helping turn that narrative around. “Oregon, they don’t really care about it too much,” Wittlake said. “They’re not very fond of it. There’s just not a ton of high-level wrestlers coming out of Oregon, but there’s always a few individuals.” Wittlake was one of those few individuals, as his wrestling journey began at the age of 4 after his father, Travis Wittlake Sr., who was the head coach at the local mat club, started to have him wrestle. … rest of story at https://www.ocolly.com/sports/1-995-miles-travis-whittlake-s-journey-from-coos-bay-to-stillwater/article_701156f0-456e-11eb-9259-bf3fa5e06671.html?mc_cid=fecb1aa0c2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – Season Preview: No Matter The Circumstances, Lehigh Wrestling Excited For Opportunity To Compete
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The last time the Lehigh wrestling team competed on the mats, the Mountain Hawks navigated a challenging field to claim their third straight EIWA team title. Three wrestlers claimed individual titles and ultimately nine qualified for the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis. Five days after the triumph in Stabler Arena, the sports world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The NCAA Championships were canceled and college athletics took a long pause.
It has been nearly nine months since Lehigh’s EIWA triumph and the athletics department’s last competition. But finally, on Saturday January 2, Lehigh athletics and Lehigh wrestling return. “We’re just excited to have some competition,” head coach Pat Santoro said. We didn’t see our guys for six months at one point and then we lost them again for five weeks. The fact that we’re even competing. We weren’t sure this was going to happen. We’re really thankful and grateful it is. It’s going to look a lot different. I’m just excited to see out guys go out and compete.” Lehigh will face a curveball right out of the gate. … rest of story at https://lehighsports.com/news/2020/12/31/season-preview-no-matter-the-circumstances-lehigh-wrestling-excited-for-opportunity-to-compete.aspx?mc_cid=b46d50bbf8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
5 } – With Lewis and Bolen back, Virginia Tech wrestling aims for good year
Last year, the lineup for the Virginia Tech wrestling team boasted one of the better wrestlers in the country. This year, it has two of them. Tech opens its abbreviated, delayed season Saturday with two wrestlers who are ranked No. 1 or No. 2 nationally in InterMat’s preseason rankings. Mekhi Lewis, who won the 2019 NCAA title at 165 pounds as a redshirt freshman, is ranked No. 1 in his weight class. Lewis, the first NCAA champ in the program’s history, did not compete for the Hokies last year. He took what the NCAA terms an “Olympic redshirt” year last season to train for the 2020 U.S. Olympic trials, which wound up being postponed until this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Tech coach Tony Robie, whose eighth-ranked Hokies open the season Saturday against visiting Campbell, is glad to have Lewis back in the lineup. “It’s huge,” Robie said this week. … rest of story at https://roanoke.com/sports/college/va_tech/with-lewis-and-bolen-back-virginia-tech-wrestling-aims-for-good-year/article_371ab5f0-4c60-11eb-958c-a3550847f73e.html?mc_cid=6915204714&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
6 } – Mizzou wrestlers hoping for another successful season
Brian Smith has been the head wrestling coach at the University of Missouri since 1998-99 and has never seen anything like it. Last season, after his squad captured its eighth consecutive MAC Tournament championship – the Tigers also won the tourney title in their final season as a Big 12 squad back in 2011-12 – the sports world shut down due to the coronavirus. That meant no NCAA Tournament. “It was awful, especially for the guys who saw their careers come to an end,” Smith recalled. “And even now, it’s still crazy. In the last two weeks, our schedule has changed daily; in fact, it changed three times today. “On the positive side, the NCAA has announced that everybody gets a free year this year. … rest of story at https://www.examiner.net/story/sports/college/2020/11/25/mizzou-wrestlers-hoping-another-successful-season/6401319002/?mc_cid=de5a36abdc&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
7 } – A STATEMENT FROM STANFORD WRESTLING
STANFORD, Calif. – On July 8th, our student-athletes and coaches were blindsided when Stanford announced its intention to eliminate wrestling and ten other varsity athletics programs at the conclusion of this season due to fiscal concerns. Though shocked, our team immediately decided that it would band together and do what wrestlers do best—work to persevere through adversity. We began developing and executing a plan to reverse the university’s decision and establish an endowment that would not only ensure wrestling’s place at Stanford, but help preserve collegiate wrestling’s presence on the West Coast and nationally. The resilience and determination our team has demonstrated has been inspiring. We have raised over $12 million and counting since September when our fundraising efforts began in earnest. We have established working relationships with many allies within the university and across the country. We have the support of 36 Sports Strong and other prominent Stanford alumni. These successes now have us more optimistic for the program’s continued future at the varsity level than ever. … rest of letter and story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/December/08/A-statement-from-Stanford-Wrestling?mc_cid=6c7e360412&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
8 } – 24 HAWKEYES TO WATCH: JAYDIN EIERMAN
By DARREN MILLER hawkeyesports.com
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Jaydin Eierman hasn’t wrestled a match in a University of Iowa singlet, but the transfer from Missouri already possesses a Hawkeye mindset. The three-time All-American talks of winning an NCAA championship and an Olympic gold medal. Then there is this:
“We are going to try to break the (NCAA Championship) scoring record,” Eierman said. “If we wrestle to the best of our ability, we are going to shock the nation.”
Sure sounds like a Hawkeye. Eierman reinforces an Iowa lineup that graduated 149-pound All-American Pat Lugo, but returns nine All-Americans, including Max Murin at 141. Murin projects to move up a weight, allowing Eierman to compete at 141, where he has placed third (2019), fourth (2018) and fifth (2017) nationally. “Jaydin being in our room makes us better. Him being in our lineup is instant credibility because of his history of results,” Iowa head coach Tom Brands said. “He is a good wrestler; he wants to be a great wrestler and he wants to be an icon in the sport.” As a redshirt sophomore and junior, Eierman advanced to the national semifinals, but lost to eventual champion Yianni Diakomilhalis of Cornell, 6-4 in sudden victory (2018) and 6-5 (2019). “It hurt, but I have to work on my things every day and I feel this year I will be the one with a target on my back,” Eierman said. “I’m at Iowa now and they know I will be one of the best in the country.” … rest of story at https://hawkeyesports.com/news/2021/01/06/24-hawkeyes-to-watch-jaydin-eierman/?mc_cid=4295bf0eb8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Penn State alumnus checks in with GoPSUsports!
Former Nittany Lion wrestler Adam Lynch never would have guessed he would be the Director of Operations for Penn State Wrestling. Now entering his 10th year with the program, Adam continues to be an important member of the Penn State wrestling family. Unsure of exactly what he wanted to do after college, Lynch knew he enjoyed being involved with athletics and earned his graduate degree in sports management and sports administration in 2013. He thought he might become a high school athletics director or pursue a career in collegiate athletics. When the director of operations position opened up, Adam recalls, “I was in the right place at the right time.”
“This has been a great learning experience,” says Adam. “I’ve learned a lot about athletics.” Adam’s responsibilities vary depending on the time of year, as he is always busy doing a lot of different things. In season, some of his tasks include making sure tickets are in order for the team and preparing pass lists for home matches. Cornerstone University adding Men’s Wrestling in 2021
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone University and Director of Athletics, Aaron Sagraves are proud to announce the addition of the university’s 20th varsity sport. Beginning with the 2021-22 academic year, men’s wrestling joins the list of Golden Eagles’ teams.
The wrestling program will reside within a new training facility near De Witt Baseball Field. The space will include a wrestling practice room and a locker room, along with an indoor space for other sports to more effectively train during the winter months. The wrestling team will host competition inside Mol Arena beginning in the winter of 2021-22.
“Over the last few years, we have explored many different sports that could add to our community here at Cornerstone and we feel that this will be one that will build into young men with their personal relationships with Christ, challenge them in their academic endeavor and also reach new heights in their athletic performance,” said Sagraves. “Wrestling is one that has stood out because of how successful it is in the state of Michigan and surrounding states, as well as it being one of the fastest growing sports in the WHAC and NAIA. I am excited to help start a varsity collegiate wrestling program here in West Michigan that features some of the best high school programs in the state.”
Sagraves and the Cornerstone athletics department will begin the search immediately for a new head coach to run the wrestling program. The hired coach will then look to recruit an initial cohort of wrestlers to enroll at Cornerstone in the fall of 2021 with the expectation to begin individual competition based on roster numbers and conference/national affiliation within the WHAC and NAIA. ….
Wrestling is a sport that continues to grow at the collegiate level, as 74 NAIA schools sponsored the sport in 2019-20. At the high school level, men’s wrestling is the eighth most popular sport with 10,843 participating schools and seventh largest men’s sport in terms of participants with 247,441 athletes according to the National Federation of High School Sports (NFHS). In the MHSAA alone, there are 465 schools that provide wrestling, making the state of Michigan one of the premier locations across the country to recruit the sport at the collegiate level. … rest of the story at https://portal.nwcaonline.com/articles/NWCA_News/Cornerstone-University-adding-Men-s-13-1-2021

1 } – Seven D1 scores that grabbed our attention over the weekend
The Big Ten joined the Division I fray as college wrestling’s powerhouse conference kicked off its season while other leagues returned to competition for the second straight weekend. We looked at 570 D1 match results from the weekend and found seven that stood out.
125 pounds — Dylan Ragusin (Michigan) pinned No. 12 Nic Aguilar (Rutgers) 1:01
Ragusin has been terrific since stepping on campus at Michigan. The two-time Illinois state champion reached the U.S. Senior Nationals finals and won the UWW Junior Nationals in the fall. His debut with the Wolverines didn’t last long. He whipped Aguilar over for a 61-second fall that jump started Michigan’s 26-10 win at Rutgers.
133 pounds — Kyle Biscoglia (Northern Iowa) pinned No. 9 Zach Price (South Dakota State) 6:22
Price was on this list last week after toppling a pair of top-10 opponents during his red-hot start to the season. This time around, wound up on the other end against an old high school rival. These two grew up competing against each other in the Des Moines outskirts and battled three times when they were high school freshmen. Price won all three then, but Biscoglia, who’s vying for a starting job with the Panthers, gained the upper hand Sunday when he cranked Price over for a fall shortly after taking a 5-4 lead in the final minute.
165 pounds # 26 Will Formato (Appalachian State) dec. # 6 Thomas Bullard (North Carolina State) 4-0
Formato is off to a formidable start, posting a pair of wins against returning NCAA qualifiers. He took control early against Bullard, scoring a takedown midway through the opening period and adding a two-point near-fall later in the first. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1610425090606&twSessionId=abugxxqymc&postId=951538135&mc_cid=01186bea70&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
2 } – College wrestling: Here’s what we learned from the first weekend of Big Ten action
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE 2021 WRESTLING SEASON
Seven Big Ten teams — Michigan, Rutgers, Minnesota, Nebraska, Indiana, Illinois and Maryland — kicked off the 2021 season over the weekend, offering fans a first look at this year’s stars. Despite the empty stands and the quiet arenas, the wrestlers stepped up, shook off the rust of the post-season and put up some serious points. Here’s what you need to know about the first weekend of Big Ten wrestling and what these matches suggest about the rest of the season.
Gable Steveson and Sebastian Rivera are back
Minnesota battled No. 5 Nebraska tough in the season-opener on Friday night, but despite the team loss, the spotlight remained on Minnesota heavyweight Gable Steveson. He’s the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the country and a likely contender for the 125kg spot on the 2021 U.S. Olympic team. Steveson cruised to a tech fall in the first match of his junior campaign, and his performance showed the Big Ten that he’s back and better than ever. A conference champion and two-time All-American, Stevenson missed out on the chance to battle for a national title last year, but his mind is squarely focused on 2021 and putting up as many dominant performances as possible. All eyes will be on the Gopher heavyweight throughout the season, but he’s not the only top-ranked guy aiming to make some noise in this shortened dual schedule. … rest of story at https://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling/article/2021-01-11/college-wrestling-heres-what-we-learned-first-weekend-big-ten-action?mc_cid=01186bea70&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
3 } – Amateur Wrestling Block | College Wrestling is Back!

The third-ranked University of Michigan, whose Regional Training Center won the RTC freestyle duals last month, head into the folkstyle season looking to win their first NCAA team championship. The Wolverines kicked off the year in two dual meets over the weekend against Big Ten foes.
On Friday night, Head Coach Sean Bormet’s Wolverine squad traveled to New Jersey to take on the 15th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Michigan defeated Rutgers 26–10. Freshman 125 lbs. Dylan Ragusin, fresh off a Junior National Freestyle Championship and a runner-up finish at the Senior level, pinned Nicolas Aguilar in 1:01. At 133 lbs, 12th ranked Jack Medley won by decision. The Wolverines won four matches in a row from 149-174 as #6 Kanen Store, #9 Will Lewan, #17 Cameron Amine, and #2 Logan Massa collected victories. 2nd ranked heavyweight Mason Parris closed the night with a major decision over Christian Colucci. … rest of story at https://fightgamemedia.com/2021/01/amateur-wrestling-block-college-wrestling-is-back/?mc_cid=01186bea70&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
4 } – NCAA announces health and safety plans for all other winter championships
Following the recent announcement of health and safety protocols for the Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships, the NCAA has announced protocols for its remaining winter championships. “This is the next step in being able to have our student-athletes compete for national championships in the safest manner possible,” said Dr. Brian Hainline, the NCAA’s chief medical officer. “These protocols have been put in place after extensive discussion with some of the leading members of the medical and scientific community who have the utmost expertise in public health and COVID-19.” The first portion of the plan calls for all rounds of the winter championships to be held at predetermined sites, rather than at traditional sites that are not predetermined. Bids for predetermined preliminary rounds will be accepted now through Jan. 25, with the host sites to be announced the week of Feb. 8. For championships that typically have predetermined sites that have previously been announced, those sites will continue to host as long as local public health authorities determine it is safe to do so. … rest of story at https://www.ncaa.com/news/ncaa/article/2021-01-11/ncaa-announces-health-and-safety-plans-all-other-winter-championships?mc_cid=01186bea70&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Andreano was one of six Bison to go undefeated on the day, joining Darren Miller (3-0 at 133), Brandon Seidman (2-0 at 125), David Campbell (2-0 at 141), No. 11 Zach Hartman (2-0 at 165) and Dorian Crosby (2-0 at 285). 7 } – Top 10 College Wrestling Performances of the Week – January 4th, 2021
The first full weekend of the 2021 wrestling season has come and gone and it was much different than most fans are accustomed to seeing. Two duals (Campbell vs. North Carolina; Hofstra vs. Lehigh) were canceled the day of, based on a positive COVID test from one of the teams. Like collegiate and professional sports over the past few months, some venues had limited fans, but many had none. We were introduced to the term “extra matches.” Not exhibition matches, because exhibitions don’t count in official statistics. After/during dual meets, teams held extra matches, some of which included their starters, others consisted of backups or freshmen. As the season progresses, we’ll see more tri’s and quads than we’re accustomed to seeing at the DI level. At the end of the day, wrestling is wrestling and we got to see some great action and remarkable performances. The first weekend of the year normally has some great freshmen, stunning upsets, and exciting duals. Though it was delayed by two months, this opening weekend had all of the above. We’ll take you through a large chunk of it with the top performances of the week.
10) Codi Russell (Appalachian State)
After qualifying for the NCAA Tournament twice at 133 lbs, Codi Russell has dropped down to 125 for his senior season. The early results for the Mountaineer are promising as he went 3-0 at Appalachian State’s Individual Quad event. Codi was one of four ASU wrestlers to finish unbeaten on the day. Russell outscored the opposition 46-8 in three bouts and he notched two major decisions and a tech. All three of his wins came against wrestlers from the University of Virginia, including a 17-4 major against the Cavaliers probable starter, Patrick McCormick. Codi is a 2019 SoCon Champion that earned the 29th seed at nationals in 2020. He has an event bigger ACC matchup looming on Friday as he’ll meet #8 Jakob Camacho (NC State). … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/college-wrestling-news/top-10-college-wrestling-performances-of-the-week-january-4th-2021/79747?mc_cid=ea644fcb33&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
8 } – Five D1 scores that caught our attention on the opening weekend of the season
It’s a short sprint to March this season for college wrestling’s top stars, but March quickly popped onto the college wrestling radar during the opening weekend in January. The Division I season kicked off over the weekend with more than 400 matches. Here are five that grabbed our attention.
133 pounds — Kellyn March (North Dakota State) major dec. No. 7 Devan Turner (Oregon State) 14-5
How’s this for a college wrestling debut? March is a true freshman who won four South Dakota State titles. His first assignment Sunday came against Turner, a returning Pac-12 champion. March scored a go-ahead takedown midway through the first period and rode Turner out and then blew open the match with a six-point move in the second. It didn’t get an easier for Turner, who later got majored by Missouri’s Matt Schmitt and lost to South Dakota State’s Zach Price.
133 pounds — No. 23 Zach Price (South Dakota State) dec. No. 10 Matt Schmitt (Missouri) 7-5
Price’s undefeated day included a pair of wins against top-10 opponents. He took down Turner 6-3 and also rallied back to beat Schmitt, using a late takedown and two-point near-fall to secure the win.
149 pounds — No. 17 Bryce Andonian (Virginia Tech) dec. No. 7 Josh Heil (Campbell) 12-9
Andonian struck first in the battle of Cleveland-area products, scoring in the opening seconds and pushing his … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1609822988905&twSessionId=rctdmojucs&postId=930617135&mc_cid=ea644fcb33&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Final Results (PDF)
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 3, 2021) – The Wyoming Cowboy Wrestling team opened its 2020-21 season Sunday afternoon as they hosted Big 12 foe Northern Colorado. The Cowboys won five matches in a row to end the dual, but fell to the Bears 19-24. “I was proud of our bigger guys coming back and taking care of their individual matches.” Said Head Coach Mark Branch “Moody stepping out there after the way the meet started was really big.” The Cowboy comeback started with Cole Moody at 165 pounds. Moody faced off against Billy Higgins in a match that was tied 2-2 heading into the third period. After an escape from Higgins, Moody would put the match away by taking Higgins down and pinning him with 45 second left in the match to put the Cowboys on the board. At 174 pounds No. 17 Hayden Hastings put on a solid performance against Northern Colorado’s Damen Pape. Hastings scored a takedown early in the match and jumped out to a 2-0 lead. He would then add a point for an escape along with a stalling point and riding time point for a 5-0 shutout victory. … rest of story at https://gowyo.com/news/2021/1/3/wrestling-cowboys-rally-falls-short-in-season-opener.aspx?mc_cid=d8fa13dc26&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team needed a spark on Sunday evening in the season-opening dual match against the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. And senior leader and team captain Jake Wentzel provided that boost for the Panthers (1-0, 0-0 ACC). With his team trailing 14-3 after dropping four of the first five bouts to the Midshipmen (0-1, 0-0 EIWA), Wentzel won his opening match of the season against No. 7 Tanner Skidgel of Navy by a 5-2 decision, sparking a furious Pitt rally that saw the visitors take the last five contests of the dual to triumph 22-14. “Jake found a way tonight, even when it didn’t look like it was going to go his way,” Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said of Wentzel. “The upper weights did a really nice job. We know we can count on the likes of Wentzel, Harvey and Bonaccorsi, but it was great to see McGill and Slinger win as well.” … rest of story at https://pittsburghpanthers.com/news/2021/1/3/wrestling-pitt-rallies-to-open-season-with-dual-victory-at-navy.aspx?mc_cid=d8fa13dc26&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

College Schedules – 2021 – # 3
TDR Editor’s Notes ; Another slate of college teams’ achedules to look over. As can be noticed the schedules are shorter than usual with fewer chances to cheer on your favorite team and wrestlers in a person in a live match. With the CoVid related attendance restriction the chances become even fewer. Thus most of us won’t get a chance to attend, cheer on and support college wrestling in person. We encourage that college wrestling fans (yes you the reader) to donate what you would spend in attending meets as well as you can and feel so inclined to your team or other college programs in need. This would show support and encourage the coaches, wrestlers and administrators to see wrestling as a sport worthy of support by the school. We welcome other suggestions and ideas on how to support college teams. E-mail us at the Editor’s office at

2 } – Cascade Conference to skip men’s and women’s conference wrestling championships
National tournaments still planned
CORVALLIS, Ore.– The Cascade Collegiate Conference championships in both men’s and women’s wrestling, previously set to take place in February, will not be conducted as originally planned, the conference announced on Monday. “With our large wrestling footprint covering Arizona, California, Oregon and Montana, the prospect of successfully getting all teams to tournaments during a time when the COVID-19 pandemic is surging seemed very unrealistic and not in the best interests of health and safety,” stated CCC Commissioner Robert Cashell. “The NAIA has changed the qualification process for men’s wrestling for the 2021 national championship, which has afforded conferences the ability to identify representatives in an alternative manner.” In men’s wrestling, the CCC was allotted 46 qualification slots to nationals, which was based on the past three-year average for the conference. … rest of story at https://www.montanasports.com/frontier-conference/cascade-conference-to-skip-mens-and-womens-conference-wrestling-championships?mc_cid=e96ed12e50&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

CLARION — Keith Ferraro is still a wrestling coach at Clarion University. He just doesn’t feel that way all the time. I’m just trying to keep this train moving and quite frankly, I think (a season) is going to happen. “There were times I would’ve said that optimistically and not really meant it. I think there will be hiccups and canceled events and matches where the wrong team wins because of so many guys out and there’ll be some weird things, but … rest of story at http://www.thecourierexpress.com/sports/schedule-on-horizon-for-clarion-u-wrestlers/article_5381f84b-cc8c-57bd-972e-716868ab3334.html?mc_cid=fecb1aa0c2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

With less than 48 hours until he takes the mat for the first time as the head coach for the Campbell University Camels, TOM had the opportunity to speak with Scott Sentes. Campbell will take on in-state foe North Carolina on New Year’s Day in the first all-DI dual of the 2021 season. Coach Sentes talks about his transition from the teams head assistant coach to leading man during this unprecedented time. We talk about the Camel squad for the upcoming season and some of the possibilities for lineups around the country with this being a “free-year” eligibility-wise. Among other topics we hit are the importance of rankings this year, his coaching staff, and Campbell’s social media presence. We close by focusing on Coach Sentes’ career at Central Michigan, which led to an impromptu impersonation of legendary head coach Tom Borrelli, along with his 2011 NCAA second-round match against a North Carolina coach he’ll face off with tomorrow. … rest of story at https://news.theopenmat.com/college-wrestling-news/tom-interview-with-scott-sentes-campbell/79731?mc_cid=b46d50bbf8&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

8 } – No. 8 Hokies beat Camels 28-6 in opener
Tech won eight of 10 matches Saturday
BLACKSBURG – Over 10 months from its last dual meet, Virginia Tech wrestling started 2021 the right way with a 28-6 win over Campbell in Cassell Coliseum Saturday afternoon. The eighth-ranked Hokies won eight matches over the Fighting Camels, including two bonus-point victories.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
- Making his dual debut, freshman Sam Hillegas won in convincing fashion, pinning his opponent Shannon Hanna in 4:17. The Pittsburgh product was a two-time Pennsylvania state champion before signing with the Hokies in November 2019.
- After taking an Olympic redshirt for the 2019-20 season, 2019 NCAA Champion Mekhi Lewis returned to Cassell Coliseum and won a 13-4 major decision over Austin Kraisser. Lewis used a four-point near fall to separate himself and lead 10-2 after the first period. A reversal in the third and riding time gave Lewis the bonus-point victory.
- In the only ranked matchup of the day, No. 20 Bryce Andonian upset No. 9 Josh Heil via 12-9 decision. The two combined for six takedowns in what was a back-and-forth match, but Andonian was able to hold off Heil’s late comeback attempt and start the season with a top-10 victory.
- Sam Latona and Andy Smith won by decision in their dual debuts. Latona, a redshirt freshman, took a 5-3 decision while the freshman Smith won 12-7.
- After missing all last season due to injury, Korbin Myers got back on the mat Saturday and earned a 4-1 decision win over Gabe Hixenbaugh. Myers had a takedown and an escape and held the riding time advantage to open the season with a victory.

1 } – Wrestling helps these three deal with real-life issues
By Sandy Stevens
This teacher addressed her kindergarten charges at home on their computers.
Teacher: “Use your sense of sight to help you draw a picture of something in your house that you can see that we cannot see.”
Kid 1: “I’m going to draw my tiny kitten.”
Kid 2: “Can I draw my brother? You can’t see him because he’s in his room.”
Kid 3: “But I didn’t get a turn.”

Teacher: “Ok, go ahead.”
Kid 3: “My private parts! You guys can’t see it because it’s my private.”
Teacher (struggling not to laugh): “Oh dear, please do not draw a picture of your private.”
Kid 3: “What do you want me to draw then?”
Teacher: “Um, how about a cool toy from your room?”
Kid 3: “OK!”
Another crisis averted. And just another day in the life of Toccara Montgomery, the 2008 Olympian, two-time World silver medalist, two-time Junior World silver medalist, two-time Pan American titlist … and kindergarten teacher at Hazelwood School in the St. Louis suburbs.
Montgomery is just one of the successful collegiate and international wrestlers who are using the lessons of the sport in their careers off the mat. “It makes 100 percent difference that I was a wrestler,” declared Montgomery, who graduated from Cumberlands in 2006 with a 29-0 dual record and a degree in elementary education, before earning a master’s degree in instructional leadership. … rest of story at https://www.win-magazine.com/2020/12/04/wrestling-helps-these-three-deal-with-real-life-issues/?mc_cid=876213e0a7&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b#utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=wrestling-helps-these-three-deal-with-real-life-issues
2 } – Young heavyweights Gable Steveson and Mason Parris shine at the RTC Cup
Two-time World medalist and returning World team member Nick Gwiazdowski had his hands full with age-group World champions Gable Steveson and Mason Parris.
The first official RTC Freestyle Cup was an incredible success. Sponsored by Titan Mercury Wrestling Club and streamed by FloWrestling, six of the strongest wrestling clubs and regional training centers in the United States squared off in a dual meet tournament for an attractive cash prize.
The tournament was contested in the dual meet “team vs. team” format – each club sent out six wrestlers at the Olympic weight classes. The winner of the round-robin in each of the two pools advanced to the semifinals, while the runner-ups wrestled again in a consolation match to put themselves back into contention. With only six weights, there were plenty of 3-3 duals that came down to criteria like “most technical falls” or “most points scored.” Every point mattered, adding significance to each match. The participants were the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club, based out of Michigan, the Wolfpack Wrestling Club, based out of North Carolina, the Ohio RTC, Gopher Wrestling Club, based out of Minnesota, Spartan Combat RTC, based out of Cornell in New York, and the combined New Jersey RTC and Southeast RTC team.
There were plenty of standout performers – namely Wolfpack WC’s Trent Hidlay, a college redshirt sophomore who went undefeated and knocked off #12 world ranked … rest of story at https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2020/12/7/22158446/wrestling-breakdown-young-heavyweights-gable-steveson-and-mason-parris-shine-at-the-rtc-cup?mc_cid=6c7e360412&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
3 } – J’DEN COX DISPLAYS CREATIVITY ON THE MAT IN WRESTLING AND OFF IT WITH MUSIC
Each Tuesday leading up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, which will be held in the summer of 2021, TeamUSA.org will introduce you to an athlete you should know prior to Tokyo – as part of the “Tokyo Tuesday” series. There’s a lot to learn on your quest to becoming the ultimate fan. Follow along on social media with the hashtag #TokyoTuesday.
J’den Cox is known as a world champion freestyle wrestler, a powerhouse on the mat who won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games Rio 2016 and is looking for gold in Tokyo in 2021. There’s another side that Cox also enjoys sharing with the world, especially the wrestling community. Whenever he gets the opportunity to step to the center of the venue at the start of a meet, hold the microphone and sing the national anthem, the gifted vocalist loves seeing the reactions of the people around him who only know him as Cox the wrestler.
“I think it goes to show there’s more to us than a couple minutes scrapping on a mat,” said Cox, 25, from Columbia, Missouri. “In general athletes are a lot more than what they do and have a lot more things they contribute to. I think it’s cool because it also allows me to show there isn’t one image that makes a wrestler.”… rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/News/2020/December/08/Jden-Cox-Displays-Creativity-On-The-Mat-In-Wrestling-And-Off-It-With-Music?mc_cid=372ecbefe1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
4 } – USA WRESTLING LAUNCHES LEGACY GIVING PROGRAM
USA Wrestling is excited to announce the launch of our Legacy Giving Program! This program has been in the planning phase since June of 2019 when Dr. Ken Lane handed a check to USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender and said, “Here; I want this to be a legacy gift.” Dr. Lane recently shared his thoughts about his legacy gift. “Wrestling not only changed my character, but it also changed my life. I cannot shoot a takedown, or throw a headlock anymore, but I can give back to my sport as a way of saying ‘Thank You’ for this wonderful life. When I saw the ‘Legacy Wall’ at the University of Nebraska, it inspired me to suggest to USA Wrestling to create an opportunity for all of us to financially reward our sport by creating a gift that will live forever,” said Dr. Lane. At the time of Dr. Lane’s gift, USA Wrestling did not have a formal program for these type of gifts. This led to USA Wrestling conducting research on how these programs worked and could impact the organization and the sport. … rest of story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/December/08/Legacy-Giving-program-launched?mc_cid=6c7e360412&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
5 } – Gophers heavyweight Gable Steveson moving up in Olympic pecking order
He is rising on the Olympic wrestling team’s radar after beating the No. 1-ranked heavyweight. The coronavirus pandemic hit high-level wrestling hard this year, with the NCAA championships at U.S. Bank Stadium wiped out, the Olympic Games in Tokyo moved to the summer of 2021 and the college season delayed. For Gable Steveson, gone was the chance to win an NCAA heavyweight title in his backyard, and on hold was the opportunity to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Things, however, are looking up for the Gophers standout from Apple Valley as 2021 approaches. He made sure of it by seizing his latest opportunity. On Dec. 4 in Cincinnati, Steveson posted a key victory in his young career, defeating Nick Gwiazdowski, the nation’s top-ranked freestyle wrestler at 125 kilograms (275.6 pounds). Steveson used a pair of takedowns to top Gwiazdowski, a two-time world championships bronze medalist, 4-1 in the RTC Cup, a matchup of teams from regional training centers. “My reaction was not really relief, but I felt I had it in me to do it and now was the time to do it,” said Steveson, who was wrestling for the Gopher Wrestling Club. “Gwiz is a really good competitor, but I felt my time to step to the plate was next up.”

6 } – Wattenberg ’03 Aims to Change Culture of Combat Sports
Clint Wattenberg ’03 took his first steps into the Cornell wrestling room in 1998 as a three-time section champion and two-time state place-winner at Pleasant Valley High School in Chico, Calif. In 2017, after 19 years at Cornell both as a student and a full-time employee, Wattenberg took a leap of faith and left Ithaca to grow his impact on combat sports. Soon to be in his fourth year as the Director of Nutrition at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Performance Institute, Wattenberg is already changing the game.
Using his knowledge of performance nutrition and exercise physiology, Wattenberg hopes to change how combat athletes take care of their metabolic health throughout the duration of their careers. For Wattenberg and his team, long gone are the overly restrictive weight cuts that can be damaging to an athlete’s long-term health. Wattenberg has turned his focus towards helping athletes maintain a healthy lifestyle for all 52 weeks of the year rather than operating at an extreme caloric deficit leading up to a fight. “I want to drive home the importance of a performance paradigm that can support training, recovery, adaptation, and at the end of the day, health and performance,” Wattenberg said. “When athletes continue to be overly restrictive and prioritize weight cutting to such a degree, it will impact metabolic health and performance at some phase during their careers.” To understand his passion, you have to go back to Wattenberg’s time as a member of the Cornell wrestling team from 1999-2003. … rest of story at https://cornellbigred.com/news/2020/12/16/wrestling-wattenberg-03-aims-to-change-culture-of-combat-sports.aspx?mc_cid=4edc48d477&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

In a battle of top lightweight stars, past NCAA champion Seth Gross scored a 4-4 criteria win over 2017 World silver medalist Thomas Gilman in the Main Event at Wisconsin RTC Underground 2 on Wednesday night. The card featured 12 freestyle matches, eight for men and four for women. Gilman was the aggressor on his feet the entire match, but was not able to complete a takedown on Gross. Gilman led 1-0 at the break when one of his single leg attacks led to a step out. In the second period, Gross scored a counter takedown to lead 2-0. A counter tilt by Gross, with a Gilman reversal made it 4-2. Gilman scored two more points on single legs that went out of bounds, each a caution and one point penalty, to tie it at 4-4. 9} – Optimized training systems can take wrestlers to the next level
What if you could be intentional during your entire training session? What if you could maximize every second of your workout so it translates into elite performance? Jed Smith and Peter Smolianov — authors of the book “Fringe Methodologies in High Performance and Health” — are asking those questions as they work to advance effective training cycles to develop elite athletes. They want to use compounding as a way to develop high-level athletic performance. Compounding is simply layered stress implemented over a long period of time. It’s a gradual approach that requires consistency, commitment, and patience. It’s a philosophy that’s less about immediate results and more about long-term gains. Nothing of value happens instantaneously — and compounding is a byproduct of that philosophy. Smith and Smolianov are particularly interested in how compounding can be utilized in wrestling given the dynamic nature of the sport. Many individual sports require repetitive motion (running, swimming, weight lifting) or equipment (tennis, golf, trapshooting) but wrestling is among the few sports where another human being dictates your movements through physical contact. A tennis player reacts to her opponent but never makes physical contact. Even boxing doesn’t require extended contact. A fighter can strike his opponent for a split second before setting up another offensive attack. Wrestling is a multitasking sport that requires every available sense to be successful. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1607745426747&twSessionId=epsxlvhmrs&postId=900392135&mc_cid=afaeddd782&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Casey Moss was best known as J.J. Deveraux on the long-running daytime drama Days of Our Lives. As Moss was toward the end of his run on the show, he earned the role of Scott Baker in the recently released wrestling-themed drama The Last Champion. On Episode 639 of Short Time, Moss talks about his role as Baker in the movie, what it was like to gain the role, his background wrestling growing up in Arizona before we go way off the original topic and talk about his band, Inner Echo, and our favorite concerts of all time. Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Pittsburgh Wrestling Club joined the ranks of RTCs hosting and streaming their own events this evening with their ten-match card “PWC 1”. Pletcher, a two-time NCAA All-American and 2020 NWCA First Team All-American for Ohio State, picked apart the Slovakian World Team member in a 9-0 decision. Pletcher scored shortly off the whistle with an explosive double leg takedown. He added two more takedowns and two step-out points, carrying an 8-0 lead into the break. In the second period, he tacked on one more step-out point. Habat was unable to mount any offense against Pletcher’s solid defense, rarely finding any opportunities to attack. In perhaps the biggest upset of the night, Lock Haven’s redshirt sophomore Issac Reid knocked off PRTC resident athlete Demetrius Thomas. 1 } – Wrestling coach Terrence Tetter was a pillar of Danville High
DANVILLE — Terrence Tetter was more than a wrestling coach at Danville. On Saturday, Tetter passed away after a nearly nine-month battle with a brain illness. “It was a shock and caught me completely off-guard when I got the call,’’ said Mark Bacys, athletics director at Danville High School. “Terrence was a pillar of Danville High School. You saw him everywhere around school and at every athletic event. He, genuinely, was in it for the kids.’’
One of the kids that Tetter helped along the way at Danville was Glen Rowell, who is currently an assistant football coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College in Owensboro, Ky. “I knew coach Tetter when I was growing up and we already had a relationship when I got to the high school,’’ Rowell said. “The struggles that I went through in high school, coach Tetter was one of the people that helped me the most get on the right track. INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, Minn. (BVM) — Simley High School wrestling is coming off a season that to many looked like one of its best ever. The Spartans went 22-0 during the 2019-20 season, winning the MSHSL 2A team state championship as well as having five wrestlers win individual state championships. The team also won prestigious tournaments during the regular season like the Cheesehead, Cliff King and Minnesota Christmas tournament. “You just don’t have seasons like that very often,” Simley head coach Will Short said. However, as Short looked towards this season, he was excited at all the talent he was bringing back. “I never didn’t have my eye on it,” Short said. “I do believe we have a special group this year and obviously their accomplishments speak for themselves.”
The Spartans are returning nine place winners, seven finalists and four individual state champions. Six of his wrestlers are also ranked nationally and his five seniors are all going to Division I programs to wrestle in college next year. “To have a team like that is really kind of crazy and unheard of,” Short said. “Even kind of uncharted territory for me and I have had some great teams with some very good guys but not with the kind of accomplishments these guys have. “Every guy we put out there is a 25 to 30 match winner. …There’s just no holes.” Unfortunately the question quickly went from what will the team accomplish to will it even get a chance. The COVID-19 pandemic has put uncertainty into all sports seasons. “I do like wrestling’s chance of going,” Short said. “I believe wrestling can be done in a safe way.”
Wrestling already has health and skin checks it does normally before events so the addition of COVID testing could be added to those checks easily. Also the fact that it is a one on one sport allows for the sport to create situations where wrestlers have limited contact with others within events and practices. … rest of story at https://bvmsports.com/2020/11/11/simley-wrestling-just-wants-time-on-the-mat/?mc_cid=b4122c2e60&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
4 } – Coach spotlight: Millbrook wrestling coach Jeff Holmes
Jeff Holmes has led the Millbrook wrestling program for the past eight seasons.
In 2017, Holmes guided the Pioneers to the Conference 21 West title. They would go on to place sixth in the region and eighth in the Class 4 state tournament, the highest finishes among local squads in both tournaments. Holmes was The Winchester Star’s Wrestling Coach of the Year in 2017. Last season, the Pioneers tied for sixth in the Northwestern District tournament. Holmes graduated from Cicero-North Syracuse (N.Y.) High School in 1997. He wrestled four seasons there, winning a sectional championship and earning a runner-up finish in the state championship at 140 pounds as a senior. He also played middle linebacker for the school’s football team. Holmes is 2002 graduate of SUNY-Oswego. He wrestled there and qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament at 157 pounds as a junior. Prior to taking over as head coach, Holmes was an assistant wrestling coach for four seasons at Millbrook. He also coached two years as an assistant at SUNY-Oswego. … rest of story at https://www.winchesterstar.com/sports/coach-spotlight-millbrook-wrestling-coach-jeff-holmes/article_0bb273a1-44c8-5769-a6e6-64e07e429d86.html?mc_cid=799fb85b6c&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
5 } – Cliff Keen Preseason High School Wrestler of the Year: Paddy Gallagher
Paddy Gallagher had a decision to make entering his final high school season. Wrestle his normal high school schedule for St. Edward High School or spend the first semester competing in open college tournaments. Gallagher chose the latter.
He had every intention of wrestling at the prestigious Midlands Championships in December and various other high-level tournaments. He planned on winning them, too. A global pandemic altered his original plan, but the intent and the desire is still there. Gallagher doesn’t care who he faces, either. He wants the best domestic and international competition wherever and whenever he can find it. “I’ve been training with the best guys for a while,” Gallagher said. “I’ll travel everywhere. I travel to the Ohio RTC and I always pick out the best guy and just get beat up ever since I was little.
“I grew up that way. Go pick out the toughest guy and see what you got. It’s kind of part of me.”
Gallagher’s list of accomplishments is long and distinguished. He is an Ohio state champion and was named Ohio’s Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2020. He also won Ironman last December and was a 2019 Fargo champion. Gallagher gets to add Cliff Keen Preseason Wrestler of the Year to that list after he was recently selected by Trackwrestling for the honor. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1606535661469&twSessionId=jayqpafogn&postId=880127135&mc_cid=0d9bace552&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – Road to a PIAA wrestling title got much tougher
The goal of every Pennsylvania wrestler is to qualify for the PIAA championships. That goal has become much more difficult for wrestlers in the 2020-21 season. On Wednesday, the PIAA board of control adopted a proposal for its postseason wrestling tournaments that includes a “super regional” round in Class 3A and Class 2A that will be held the week before the state tournament. The proposal also cuts the number of qualifiers for the PIAA tournaments from 20 individuals per weight class to eight. The proposal is in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and PIAA recommendations that include avoiding tournaments that require overnight stays. “This format is in line with what the PIAA did for its fall sports,” said WPIAL wrestling committee chairman Frank Vulcano Jr., who is also a member of the PIAA wrestling committee. “Our goal was to limit each tournament to eight individuals in each weight class and have tournaments that would be completed in one day.” The super regional round will combine qualifiers from multiple regional tournaments. … rest of story at https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/hsother/2020/12/11/PIAA-wrestling-changes-cuts-in-qualifiers-PIAA-tournament/stories/202012090009?mc_cid=afaeddd782&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
8 } – Masks could make wrestling even more challenging for District 10 and PIAA participants
COVID-19 has made it difficult to picture what the PIAA’s 2020-21 wrestling season will look like. It also could be hard to tell what the individual wrestlers will look like if they must wear masks or facial coverings. The PIAA allowed its winter sports programs to begin practices on Nov. 20. However, there was uncertainty if participants must wear sanctioned masks or facial coverings both in active and nonactive situations, based on information released during its Nov. 18 board of directors meeting.
The PIAA posed and answered the following:
Question: Can an athlete remove their mask during play if the mask causes a medical condition, including respiratory issues that impede breathing?
Answer: Yes, the Order provides an exception in section 3 that provides that if wearing a face covering would either cause a medical condition, or exacerbate an existing one, including respiratory issues that impede breathing, a mental health condition or a disability. The order indicates all alternatives to wearing a face covering, including the use of a face shield, should be exhausted before an individual is excepted from this Order.
The Erie Times-News sought further clarity of that question-and-answer. Mark Byers, the PIAA’s chief operating officer, responded with an email. … rest of story at https://www.goerie.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2020/12/01/district-10-piaa-wrestlers-grapple-prospect-facial-coverings/6422922002/?mc_cid=2514c7e76e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

1 } – All women’s wrestling tournament makes history
History was made in East Brewton last Friday as the first all women’s wrestling event was held at W.S. Neal High School in the Murder Creek Melee tournament. Under the direction of Coast J.T. Gosnell at W.S. Neal High School, the tournament featured four school teams as part of the history-making event. “I’ve been working with the girls wrestling task force and had this event scheduled in Mobile,” Gosnell said. “But the event was cancelled due to several circumstances. After speaking with the three other schools with the largest group of wrestlers, we were able to get the event rescheduled to take place at W.S. Neal.” Gosnell said school teams from Birmingham, Daphne and Dothan participated in the event with the team from W.S. Neal. “This tournament was fun to watch,” Gosnell said. “Most of the wrestlers had not had an opportunity to wrestle … rest of story at https://www.brewtonstandard.com/2020/12/08/all-womens-wrestling-tournament-makes-history/?mc_cid=6c7e360412&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – Future Looks Bright For Girls Wrestling In South Dakota
South Dakota recently became the 25th state in the nation to sanction a girls wrestling division at the high school level. While it’s nothing new to see girls participating in the sport, it’s a big-time moment for the state to recognize wrestling as a sport for both girls and boys. “Girls wrestling is something that has been growing around the country in recent years. It was a couple year process with our wrestling advisory committee,” said Dr. Dan Swartos, South Dakota High School Activities Association Executive Director. “Last year, that committee passed a recommendation to add girls wrestling, starting off with four weight classes, starting this year.” On the boys’ side, there are fourteen weight classes, plus two classes of competition. So, why just four total weight classes in girls wrestling? The association says it’s simply just a starting point to get it going. “Not knowing what our population would be [for girls], we thought we’d start off with four weight classes, similar to what Missouri had done,” Swartos explained. “In every surrounding area where girls wrestling has had a first year, it’s really taken off after that. We expect it to grow quite a bit after this first year, even with the really encouraging first year numbers we’re seeing right now.” Rapid City has a wrestling invite this coming weekend. At one point, roughly forty girls were scheduled to wrestle in it – positive signs, indeed. 4 } – Will there ever be a women’s college tournament like the 2014 WCWA Championships?
The 2020 college season was a banner year for women’s college wrestling. It was the first time that NAIA programs and NCAA programs planned to host separate championships in separate locations. The National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships were held in Adrian, Michigan, but the NAIA women’s championships were canceled due to the coronavirus. The future of the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) tournament is unknown, but history will show that it was the national collegiate women’s wrestling championship that counted for years since it combined schools from every division. Perhaps no national women’s collegiate tournament in the future will compare to the 2014 WCWA Championships held in St. Louis on January 24-25. Here are a few of the impressive statistics that came from the 10 women who won titles at the tournament.
— Every champion won at least two WCWA titles apiece during their collegiate careers for a total of 28 WCWA titles between all 10 wrestlers.
— Victoria Anthony of Simon Fraser became the first four-time WCWA champion at the 2014 tournament.
— Helen Maroulis of Simon Fraser became the second four-time WCWA champion at the 2014 tournament. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1607580632439&twSessionId=gqwquxjzzz&postId=895053135&mc_cid=372ecbefe1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
5 } – WPU COMPETES IN INAUGURAL DUAL, CLAIMS VICTORY VIA TIEBREAKER
Oskaloosa–The era of Statesmen women’s wrestling finally began Wednesday as the team hosted Indian Hills CC in a non-conference dual meet. After some team scoring issues were clarified, it was announced that William Penn won the dual 18-17 over the Falcons. WPU (1-0) won four matches, highlighted by two falls, which in the end was the determining factor in the squad being victorious in its inaugural competition.
IHCC (1-3) took the early 8-0 advantage with shutout technical fall wins at 170 and 191 pounds. After neither team put a wrestler on the match at 101 pounds, the visitors then made it 11-1 with another win via decision at 109. Chalimar Rodriguez (Fr., Keller, Texas), who jumped up a weight class, did however tally the first points ever for WPU in the 10-2 setback, giving the navy and gold their first team point as well. If a losing wrestler scores a point in a match decided by decision or technical fall (not in a pin), their team is awarded one point, so at 109 pounds, Indian Hills CC earned three points and WPU earned one point. … rest of story at https://www.statesmenathletics.com/article/8964?mc_cid=d179f0f753&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
6 } – Enthusiasm high for girls wrestling at Billings Public Schools
BILLINGS — A big question entering the winter is how many girls would wrestle with the Montana High School Association sanctioning girls wrestling this year. At the three Billings Public Schools high schools, the turnout has been good, according to director of athletics and activities Mark Wahl. At Senior, 20 girls are participating, and four are out for the sport at Skyview. At West, no girls are out for the sport at this point for the first time in four years, coach Jeremy Hernandez said, but he anticipates more participating in the future based on the number of girls wrestling in the local youth programs, including Team Champs. Currently, girls wrestlers are practicing with their boys team members at Senior and Skyview. However, with the turnout ratio, School District 2 is now advertising for a head coach to oversee the girls programs, Wahl said. … rest of story at https://billingsgazette.com/sports/high-school/wrestling/enthusiasm-high-for-girls-wrestling-at-billings-public-schools/article_28b6a675-f51d-52e5-92f9-60e6e20e783c.html?mc_cid=afaeddd782&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

One of the signs of the growth of women’s wrestling on the college scene is not only the number of programs being created, but also the new opportunities available for women to coach women’s college wrestling teams. The first trailblazers among women to serve as head coaches of women’s college teams were both Olympians, Marcie Van Dusen at Menlo College and Toccara Montgomery at Lindenwood.
