Azevedo To Be Inducted into California Wrestling Hall of Fame
PHILADELPHIA – Mert and Joanne Hill Head Coach of Wrestling Matt Azevedo will be one of 11 inductees into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame, when the organization holds its banquet on June 13.
Azevedo is in his ninth season at the helm with Drexel. He has coached the Dragons to their first appearance in the USA Today/NCWA DI Coaches Poll and kept Drexel in the Top 25 for six weeks in the 2016-17 season. The next year, Drexel finished the season ranked in the coaches poll as well as three other rankings compiled by national media outlets Intermat and FloWrestling. The Dragons have won 10 or more duals in three of the last four complete seasons. Twenty-eight Drexel wrestlers have qualified for the NCAA Wrestling Championships under Azevedo’s watch. …. story at https://drexeldragons.com/news/2020/2/12/azevedo-to-be-inducted-into-california-wrestling-hall-of-fame.aspx?mc_cid=e1e9966c02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Penn State coach Cael Sanderson speaks out on how to grow wrestling
Cael Sanderson is a titan at seemingly every level of the wrestling world. He’s the most successful collegiate wrestler in NCAA Division I history, won an Olympic Gold and has won eight NCAA titles as a head coach. And yet, one of the sport’s biggest names at one of the country’s most well-known universities, feels he only has so much pull when it comes to changing and growing the sport he’s made his livelihood. “I just try to do the best that I can with the job I’ve been hired to do. That’s how we try to do our best to make the sport more interesting, more competitive and I think that’s happening as we’re seeing just with numbers alone,” Sanderson said. “We’re just gonna do what we can control. That’s always been my philosophy — just do the job I was hired to do.” Sanderson knows wrestling is a niche sport that is difficult to follow and understand at times. Of the nine NCAA sanctioned men’s team sports at the Division I level, wrestling ranks fifth with 75 programs, well behind the next closest sport, swimming and diving, which has 131 teams competing. … story at https://www.collegian.psu.edu/sports/wrestling/article_1fd672e0-4d32-11ea-9957-0fde7402caf6.html?mc_cid=e1e9966c02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Univ. Pitt-Johnstown’s Pecora alone at the top of the mountain
No coach in college wrestling history has won more dual meets than Pat Pecora. The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown coach watched his Mountain Cats defeat Mercyhurst, 22-12, last Friday – giving him 617 career victories, one more than Dale Thomas of Oregon State. The man who said he always thought of coaching as a family was surrounded after the match by current and former wrestlers who helped him reach that remarkable wins total. “When I started coaching, I was 22 years old. What did I know? I never was even an assistant coach in my life,” Pecora said at the UPJ Wellness Center. “I ran a team like my parents raised a family. That’s all it was. That’s what I try to do in everything I’m in.” Pecora arrived at UPJ in 1976 to take over a young Mountain Cats program, and his first team went 4-12. But the Cats have had only one losing season since, and have rolled up 29 straight winning campaigns. …. story at https://www.tribdem.com/news/editorials/editorial-upj-s-pecora-alone-at-the-top-of-the/article_acbf4f6a-4d0a-11ea-8257-57b3979032fe.html?mc_cid=e1e9966c02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Women’s Wrestling News & Results – # 20

She fought to survive as a child. Trained as an Olympic wrestler. Now she shows Marines how to fight.
Sgt. Melissa Paul is a wrestler who has been fighting all her life. Fighting through the pain of growing up without a father since she was 4, when hers was sent to prison in Colorado. Fighting to get an education in Alaska when her drug-abusing mother wanted to her to quit high school and make a living fishing instead. Fighting to find a safe home when her mother paid a friend to take her off her hands, for a television. “When I was younger, I would always pray, ‘God, I just want a family. I just want a family.’ And I ended up never really having a family, so then I kind of got angry at God,” Paul said. “I didn’t realize that I did have a family with my wrestling team.” The Marine based at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown who trains martial-arts instructors has been wrestling for as long as she can remember, long before it was common for women to do so. … story at https://www.pilotonline.com/military/vp-nw-wrestling-marine-foster-care-yorktown–20200212-slhchuecrjfmhp55cwygs74d2q-story.html?mc_cid=e1e9966c02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Will the real women’s team champion please stand up?
Campbellsville University has much to be proud of with its recent Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) team title on the campus of Life University in Marietta, Georgia. The numbers alone from the tournament are staggering.  The Lady Tigers scored 230 points, which was 117 points ahead of runner-up Life University. They also had three champions and 10 additional All-Americans.  There was one thing missing for Campbellsville head coach Lee Miracle: Menlo College. “We can’t say we are the best unless Menlo was there,” Miracle said. “If Menlo was there and we won, then we can say we are the best. We used this tournament as a tune-up for the NAIA tournament.” There were other teams that opted not to attend (McKendree, Simon Fraser and King among the top teams) this year but you can’t blame Miracle for focusing on one team. Menlo defeated Campbellsville, 22-19, in the finals at the NAIA women’s division of the NWCA National Duals on January 11. Had they been there, Miracle would consider the WCWA tournament to be a ‘true’ national championship. … Story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1581544754650&twSessionId=wuknzjvetu&postId=384574135&mc_cid=e1e9966c02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Sibling Pair Competes and Connects through Wrestling
In most sports, players form close bonds with each other, turning into a family over a season of grueling practices and intense competitions.  The Qureshis are different; their relationship as siblings was established long before they became teammates on varsity wrestling. For freshman Carissa Qureshi and sophomore Ethan Qureshi, wrestling united them under a singular passion and gave them the opportunity to appreciate their familial connection. While all wrestlers have an opportunity to train with one another, the Qureshi siblings typically spent approximately 15 to 20 minutes every two hour practice to work with one another.
“[Wrestling is] something we both love, so I always see him watching wrestling, and I think he can see me watching wrestling too,” Carissa Qureshi said. “It sort of makes us closer, because we share a bond over wrestling. It’s what we talk about a lot.” This past wrestling season was not the first time they have stood side-by-side on the mats together. … story at https://portolapilot.com/sibling-pair-competes-and-connects-through-wrestling/?mc_cid=e1e9966c02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Bobcat Wrestler Emma Gomez wrestles into history as she competed in the first ever girls state wrestling tournament
One of our very own Hemingford Bobcats was a part of history this past weekend. Junior Emma Gomez was one of over 130 Girls from across Nebraska to compete in York during the first ever Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association Girls State Tournament. In all, over 30 Nebraska schools were represented. Emma Gomez came in Runner-Up for her 182 classes. Several local wrestlers had a strong showing on the mat in York. Bridgeport’s Jerzie Menke took home the State Title in the 126 class and Chadron’s Paige Denke also came home with Runner-Up at 106. The State commission took to a vote for a girl’s state tournament last season. It was denied by one vote. “As girl wrestlers carve out a larger and larger niche of what is dominated by males there will be a generation of young women that will be remembered as the pioneers that opened the door wider and wider for young girls across Nebraska and more specifically in the Panhandle,” said Bobcat Wrestling Coach Todd Westover. Emma developed a passion for the sport at the young age of just four-years-old and it has just continued to grow since then. “Going with my dad to practice was always something that I enjoyed doing but I got really bored just sitting there watching so I jumped in and started wrestling,” said Emma. …. story at https://www.starherald.com/hemingford/news/bobcat-wrestler-emma-gomez-wrestles-into-history-as-she-competed/article_e359ef72-4ddb-11ea-a970-7f40138ecb33.html?mc_cid=e1e9966c02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

What to expect leading up to the 2020 NAIA and NCAA postseason events
There was some buzz last weekend about the top 3 programs from the 2019 WCWA National Championships (Menlo, Simon Fraser & McKendree) not competing this year. It’s not breaking news at this point, but there’s been an abrupt shift away from the WCWA as the NAIA and NCAA are taking steps toward women’s wrestling being classified a championship sport. Both governing bodies have granted women’s wrestling emerging sport status, the NAIA in 2018 and the NCAA in 2020, respectively. So, as exciting as the WCWA’s were this year, the daily grind of the season is far from over. NCAA programs have just 3 weeks before their first exclusive postseason event in Adrian, MI. The National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships will take place on March 6th and 7th. Between now and then, there are still some tough matches lined up, including a senior night dual for McKendree, who will host Oklahoma City on Feb. 21. …. story at https://www.transitionwrestling.com/what-to-expect-leading-up-to-the-2020-naia-and-ncaa-postseason-events/?mc_cid=e1e9966c02&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Minisink wrestling coach Kevin Gallagher hits win 500
Kevin Gallagher scrolls through the many pictures taken by Minisink Valley fans this season and the Hall of Fame coach isn’t focused on the wrestling. Gallagher is locked on the reactions of his wrestlers on the bench, parents and followers. The passion shown towards Minisink Valley’s program is enough for Gallagher. Not his countless amount of accolades. Gallagher recently became the second wrestling coach in Section 9 to reach 500 career dual-meet wins on Friday, Jan. 24, joining Cornwall’s Don Blaine. There was no time to reflect on the accomplishment. Gallagher was standing by his motto of “getting better each day.” His attention was on Minisink Valley, the top seed, chasing the state Division I dual-meet championship Saturday at the SRC Arena in Syracuse. …. story at https://www.recordonline.com/varsity/20200131/minisink-wrestling-coach-kevin-gallagher-hits-win-500?mc_cid=1ee623c6f3&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

UPSET IN THE EMPIRE STATE

While states like Pennsylvania, Iowa, Ohio and Illinois get ready for their respective state dual tournaments, a number of states have already crowned their champions. Perhaps the most notable of those results came this past weekend. Up in New York, powerhouse Hilton was upended by Massapequa in the Division I state tournament. This was only the second year of a new format that replaced team rankings as the determining factor.
SHOWDOWN ON THE WEST COAST
High school wrestling diehards know all the big duals. Blair Academy-Wyoming Seminary, Bethlehem Catholic-Nazareth in Pennsylvania, St. Edward and St. Paris Graham in Ohio.  In California, it’s all about Buchanan and Clovis. The gym is packed every year for these two neighboring rivals who also happened to have two of the best programs in the country almost every year. This year is no different and after the two each reached the finals of the (unsanctioned) inaugural California State Duals, they will once again meet on a big stage. On Thursday at Clovis High, the two will meet for area bragging rights and the right, at least temporarily, to be called the best dual team in California.  … rest of story at

Miluk and crew made duals a success
You might say the West Virginia Wrestling Coaches Association was “Puttin’ on the Ritz” last weekend at America’s Resort, The Greenbrier. The inaugural West Virginia Dual Team State Championships were held in the Colonial Room, with four teams each in Class AAA and Class AA schools participating. Parkersburg defeated University 44-24 in Class AAA and Point Pleasant beat Oak Glen 59-9 in the AA division to capture the first duals state titles. Spring Mills (AAA) and Herbert Hoover(AA) had third-place finishes. St. Albans and Bridgeport were the other participating teams. When the coaches association met and the subject of a duals tournament emerged, again, they looked at their president, Greenbrier East coach Brian Miluk, and said, “Let’s do it.” Knowing the excitable and hardworking Miluk, I immediately got this vision from the movie “Rocky II” …. rest of the story at https://www.register-herald.com/sports/miluk-and-crew-made-duals-a-success/article_d7e51632-1677-5752-9c3e-b2fc0e98bced.html?mc_cid=920b1cb2df&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

In 28 years, wrestling club produced 48 state champs
 From 2000-05, Waite was the dominant team in Toledo City League wrestling, and that was when St. John’s, St. Francis, Whitmer and Central Catholic were in the mix.
        There might not have even been a Waite wrestling team had it not been for Gary Burgess.
        In 1992, Burgess, Hector Ramirez and his brother Earl Ramirez started the East Toledo Wrestling Club.
        The club continued through 2018, and during those 26 years it produced 39 Ohio high school state champions. There have been dozens more state placers and even a national champion — Waite high school state placer Antonio Guerra went on to win two NCAA Division II championships for the University of Findlay in 2005 and 2006 and is now the head coach at Defiance College.
        In addition, there were 27 grade school state champions, five two-time grade school state champions, 18 junior high state champs, one three-time junior high state champ and 27 tournaments of champions and placers.
        “It’s amazing how committed Gary has always been with all his wrestlers and all the challenges he has had to endure.  He’s been a committed person. I quit this program about five years ago and my brother about seven, but Gary has been committed all these years,” Hector Ramirez said.
        Burgess, who is now under treatment for cancer but was still helping at Clay, remembers how it got started.
        “The Waite High School wrestling team was going down in numbers to a point they were thinking about canceling wrestling out there. Being an ex-Wrestler from Waite myself, as soon as I got out of the Army I started coaching again,” Burgess said.
        “I went over and talked to the athletic director and I asked him to give us a chance and I’ll start a youth club and get you a feeder system into the high school. That’s how we got started. I got a hold of Hector and his brother Earl and Herman (Obitua) — all actually ex-Waite wrestlers and I told them what I’d like to do and see if we can get something going.”
        Once the first group of freshman wrestlers reached Waite, City League championships started to happen. Meanwhile, in the offseason, the ETWC was taking wrestlers to events all over the country.
        “We went to Oklahoma nationals, we went down to Columbus and helped run tournaments, …. rest of the story at http://presspublications.com/content/28-years-wrestling-club-produced-48-state-champs?mc_cid=3ff45774c0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Wolfpack wins ACC Championships

@PackWrestle Claims its Second Straight ACC Championship

Camacho and Hayden Hidlay earn individual titles, eight qualify for NCAA Championships

PITTSBURGH, PA. – The NC State wrestling team won back-to-back ACC Championships for the first time since 2001-02, as the Wolfpack claimed top honors at the 2020 ACC Championship Sunday at Pitt.

NC State won the team race with 81 points. Host Pitt was second (77), North Carolina took third (67.5), Virginia was fourth (60.5), Virginia Tech fifth (52) and Duke was sixth (2).

The ACC title was the Pack’s second straight, third in the last five seasons and 17th all-time in school history. The 17 team titles are tied UNC among the current ACC schools.

The Pack had nine of its 10 wrestlers in the semifinals, six into the finals and a pair won individual ACC championships – R-Fr. Jakob Camacho (125 pounds) and R-Jr. Hayden Hidlay (157) both went 2-0 on the day to win their championships.

R-Jr. Tariq Wilson (141), R-Jr. Daniel Bullard (174), R-Fr. Trent Hidlay (184), and So. Deonte Wilson (285) each earned All-ACC honors with their second place finishes.

#10 R-Jr. Thomas Bullard scored a third place finish at 165 pounds, and added two additional team points in his third place bout with a pin.

R-Fr. Jarrett Trombley placed fourth at 133 pounds. Both Thomas Bullard and Trombley have advanced to the NCAA Championships with their automatic bids.

ACC Championship Finals

125 Finals | #18 Jakob Camacho (19-6) vs. #2 Jack Mueller (UVA – 13-0)
In his first ACC Championship, R-Fr. Jakob Camacho started the Pack’s run of gold by claiming the ACC title at 125 pounds. Matched up against 2019 NCAA Finalist #2 Jack Mueller of Virginia, Camacho came out strong with a pair of takedowns in the first period, and adding in a four-point near fall to jump out to an 8-2 lead. Camacho then added a third takedown in the third, and with the ride time point, scored an 11-4 upset over the previously unbeaten Mueller.

141 Finals | #12 Tariq Wilson (24-5) vs. #13 Zach Sherman (UNC – 26-5)
R-Jr. Tariq Wilson advanced to the ACC Finals for the second straight season, once again earning All-ACC honors. After a quick takedown in the first, Wilson held a 2-1 lead after the first. #13 UNC’s Sherman got a takedown in the second, and Wilson held a 4-3 lead going into the second. Sherman was awarded another takedown after a UNC challenge, and the bout ended after a NC State challenge for an escape at the end of the 5-4 bout.

157 Finals | #2 Hayden Hidlay (27-1) vs. #24 Taleb Rahmani (Pitt – 16-8)
R-Jr. Hayden Hidlay became the 11th NC State wrestler in school history to win three ACC titles, as he did so at 157 pounds for the third straight year. Hidlay also did it via bonus points, scoring a 13-4 major decision over Pitt’s Rahmani – defeating him for the title for the second straight year. Hidlay started with a takedown early and then added a four-point near fall to take a 6-0 lead. A late takedown in the third, and adding in ride time, gave Hidlay the title.

174 Finals | #12 Daniel Bullard (24-5) vs. #31 Clay Lautt (UNC – 20-7)
R-Jr. Daniel Bullard reached his first career ACC Finals, but fell to UNC’s Lautt in the title bout, 4-3. Lautt scored a pair of first-period takedowns, and all of Bullard’s points came off of escapes. He earns All-ACC honors for the first time in his career after back-to-back third place showings to begin his career.

184 Finals | #3 Trent Hidlay (23-3) vs. #2 Hunter Bolen (VT – 23-2)
In a battle of two of the top three ranked wrestlers nationally, #2 Bolen of Virginia Tech came out with a 2-1 win over #3 Trent Hidlay. Both wrestlers earned escape points by started the second and third periods down, but Hidlay was hit for a pair of stalls, with the second in the second period, for the decisive point. Hidlay earns All-ACC honors in his first ACC Championship.

285 Finals | #25 Deonte Wilson (19-8) #10 Demetrius Thomas (Pitt – 20-3)
So. Deonte Wilson also reached the ACC Finals for the first time in his career, and came away with All-ACC honors. Entering the third down down 4-2, he gave up an escape to #10 Pitt’s Thomas then turned around and got a late takedown but it was not enough in the 5-4 loss.

Campaign to Sanction High School Girls Wrestling in Pennsylvania Launches

Harrisburg, PA (March 4, 2020) – The Pennsylvania Girls High School Wrestling Task Force announces the launch of SanctionPA, a grassroots effort to work towards getting high school girls wrestling approved as a sanctioned sport in Pennsylvania. The SanctionPA campaign includes advocacy efforts, education resources, promotional materials and collaboration with schools.
For the past five years, girls wrestling has been the fastest growing high school sport in the country. Mirroring the national statistics, Pennsylvania high school wrestling has experienced a 100% growth of girls on high school boys’ teams in the past five years. All 12 PIAA district areas have girls wrestling within their area schools. While there are 21 state high school associations sanctioning a girls wrestling state championship, Pennsylvania does not yet have an official state tournament and has not sanctioned girls wrestling as a sport.
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) current rules require a minimum of 100 schools to have officially recognized girls wrestling programs before considering sanctioning the sport. The SanctionPA campaign is working to provide educational information and resources to help grow opportunities for girls wrestling and help to promote the addition of school girls wrestling programs.
Activities of the SanctionPA campaign include:

  • Educate wrestling coaches and school administrators on girls wrestling;
  • Work with individual schools to form official high school girls wrestling teams;
  • Provide resources to schools and coaches to develop girls teams;
  • Work with the PIAA Wrestling Steering committee and state office on sanctioning efforts and the creation of a PIAA State Championship;
  • Help coordinate competition opportunities for girls until sanctioning is achieved;

Quotes:
“We are at a critical tipping point for girls wrestling in the state of Pennsylvania as we see the interest for the sport gaining momentum. Girls wrestling is the fastest growing high school sport in the nation and our state is seeing the same increase in popularity. Now is the time to embrace girls wrestling in Pennsylvania, a state that prides ourselves on our strong history of wrestling.” – – Brooke Zumas, assistant wrestling coach, Parkland High School and chair, Pennsylvania Girls High School Wrestling Task Force

“The amazing thing about wrestling is it is an inclusive sport, as it provides opportunity for individuals from all backgrounds and all physical sizes. However, in Pennsylvania that inclusion has historically stopped at gender. We are now seeing a hardy appetite to be fully inclusive and put out the welcome mat at a wide-open door for girl wrestlers.” – – Joe Stabilito, chairman, Pennsylvania USA Wrestling

“Officially recognizing the sport by schools and the state athletic association ….. rest of story at https://portal.nwcaonline.com/articles/NWCA_News/Campaign-to-Sanction-High-School-Girls-4-3-2020

TDR Editor’s Notes II

Will confess and admit that we like Roman numerals so that is why the II is included above. In most postings about college results we try for at least 10 articles linked in each College news group. We welcome information that is shared, sent our way, or if you see an article about wrestling in a newspaper or news outlet please share that with us.

Soon original TDR articles will be published in March such as the TDR Top 12 rankings of scholastic wrestlers in eastern North Carolina. From that group the top 35-40 will be awarded individualized TDR award plaques. The top wrestlers from that group will be presented the trophies of the 4 ‘Big Award’ wrestlers. In addition to this we shall update the records and listings of college coaches.

Also, we may not be on-line until Monday the 9th so there will be a pause in our postings.

Track Wrestling Weekend Rundown: The top storylines rolled into 17 sentences
1. This is shaping up to be a historic season for Princeton wrestling and the decision to double down paid immediate dividends for the Tigers, who captured their first Ivy League dual title in 34 years Sunday when they knocked off Cornell 19-13, ending a 92-meet conference win streak for the Big Red.
2. Princeton went all-in this weekend in its pursuit of the program’s first NCAA team trophy when the Tigers pulled three-time All-American Matthew Kolodzik out of Olympic redshirt, and the 149-pounder scored a pair of victories over the weekend, including a 4-2 win that sparked a string of five straight Tiger triumphs in the Cornell dual.
3. Though the dual was out of reach by the time he took the mat Sunday, Cornell All-American Ben Darmstadt continued his tear at 197 pounds with an 11-4 victory against No. 3 Patrick Brucki.
4. There were times during Pat Popolizio’s early days at North Carolina State when crowds of fewer than 100 showed up for home duals, but the Wolfpack packed Reynolds Coliseum on Friday night and defeated North Carolina 19-14 in front of a school-record crowd of 4,383 to run their record to 13-0 on the season. …. rest of list at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1581398894026&twSessionId=dsfvtwoqxk&postId=369174135&mc_cid=3ff45774c0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
