Chatfield earn Colorado Girls State team title
By Tom Blair, ICW Staff
The 2020 Colorado Girls State Championship being held at Thornton High School on four mats as it was moved to a one-day tournament because of the weather. The 147 girls began the day with weighins and then waited around for the start of the matches / rounds to begin. Most would take this time to hydrate and fuel their body with nutritional food, then came the warmups on all four mats. The tournament started on time as there were no missed weighins and only one change at 161 as the Cherokee Trails girl pulled out early in the week. The whistles sounded the start of the tournament on all four mats. The talent of the girls in this state tournament has come forward 10 folds in one year with not only in the growth of the sport in Colorado but also nationwide. The technique that the girls have shown in the first round, can be tribute to the coaches that have stepped forward across Colorado to take them to next level. This tournament has also grown to the 16-wrestlers per bracket and with 65 high school teams in attendance.  First round on the day, finished with four upsets as the brackets were setup by the girls’ regional finish for the top 6 seeds.  …. rest of the story at http://insidecoloradowrestling.com/index.php/16-high-school/1804-chatfield-earn-colorado-girls-state-team-title?mc_cid=3ff45774c0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

North Carolina girl won a state wrestling title and ‘inspired a lot of kids’
By Liz Clarke Feb. 29, 2020 at 10:38 a.m. EST
After placing fourth in North Carolina’s high school wrestling championship meet as a sophomore, Heaven Fitch set her sights on winning the 106-pound division as a junior. In doing so last week, triumphing in an eight-wrestler bracket that included seven boys, Fitch made state history as North Carolina’s first girl to win an individual state wrestling championship. In the days since, during which seemingly every media outlet from the local Fox affiliate to the BBC has called, the significance of Fitch’s achievement has grown, according to advocates who have promoted girls’ and women’s wrestling for years. “This has had a ripple effect,” said Sally Roberts, founder and CEO of Wrestle Like a Girl, a nonprofit that promotes wrestling as a means of educating and empowering girls and women. “It is very significant in wrestling history because it’s a great example of, ‘Yes, women can do it if they’re taught, educated and trained.’ Wrestling is a sport for everybody.” Said Michael Moyer, executive director of the National Wrestling Coaches Association: “It has created terrific conversation within the wrestling community, and it has promoted interest in growing girls’ and women’s wrestling among people outside the wrestling community, which is just as important.”
In Kansas, girls didn’t have a wrestling championship of their own. Mya Kretzer changed that.
Fitch, a junior at Uwharrie Charter Academy in Asheboro, N.C., had a 54-4 record for the Eagles this season and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for North Carolina’s 1A division. Still, she was overwhelmed by her victory last Saturday, telling Raleigh’s WRAL-TV: “It’s, like, insane what I’ve done. It’s not fully sunken in yet.” …. rest of the story at https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/02/29/north-carolina-girl-won-state-wrestling-title-inspired-lot-kids/

Maine East girls wrestling program continues to grow
Prior to her freshman year, Vanessa Montesinos knew nothing about wrestling. She knew the sport existed for boys, but she was much less certain that wrestling had a place for her. That’s when her teammate, Kate Cacho, pitched Montesinos on the opportunity. “I decided to try it out,” Montesinos said. “I’ve grown a passion for it over the years, and now I truly do enjoy putting in all the hard work that it requires. “I felt like the environment was good for me, and (Cacho) felt that way too. Pretty much from the very beginning, it ended up being true.” Four years ago, the Maine East girls wrestling program had one competitor. Now, boys and girls coach Austin Bautista said the Blue Demon girls program has 10 wrestlers, and the number grows by the year. “We’ve had many more girls come out in recent years, girls looking to compete,” Bautista said. “It’s given them many positive moments. The sport of wrestling teaches you to never give up, and this can truly help them become independent, self-confident women and develop a strong belief in themselves. Not just inside, but outside of wrestling.” Montesinos was ranked eighth in the 132-pound class in the inaugural Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association girls state rankings, which are presented by Rob Sherrill. ….. rest of the story at https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/park-ridge/sports/ct-prh-wrestling-notes-maine-east-maine-south-tl-0213-20200210-pwouscccajc47dr7wimrjsz5wa-story.html?mc_cid=3ff45774c0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Lynbrook’s Ally Fitzgerald first LI girl to qualify for boys championship meet
By Gregg Sarragregg.sarra@newsday.com @Gregg_Sarra
Ally Fitzgerald became the first girl on Long Island to qualify for a boys sectional wrestling tournament. The Lynbrook junior put together a 4-1 record at the Long Beach qualifier Saturday to secure a spot in the 120-pound weight class in next week’s Nassau championships. “She wrestled her best tournament of the past three years,” Lynbrook coach Rich Renz said. “I knew she could do it. She was focused and wrestled smart. She’s worked hard for the opportunity to wrestle in the county tournament.” After winning her first two bouts by pin, Fitzgerald was pinned in the first period of the semifinals by second-seeded Andres Castro of Long Beach. The loss forced her into the consolation bracket, and she needed one win to qualify for the county tournament. …. rest of the story at https://www.newsday.com/sports/high-school/wrestling/ally-fitzgerald-girls-wrestling-lynbrook-1.41694491?fbclid=IwAR2mZGVVZB31nxo_fhWNfR9RDAVcK_aWp1ODpmImCGHpzqlUY2B_EQLwEHY&mc_cid=ecaa75d4fa&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

First girls state wrestling tournament a success
The first ever girls state wrestling tournament took place this past Saturday at York High School. More than 100 girls took part in the event, which drew quite a bit in attendance. When it was said and done, 14 girls were named state champions and West Point-Beemer took home the team title. Tournament director and former High Plains coach Norm Manstedt was more than pleased with how it went. “It was a great day all the way around. There was great wrestling by the female athletes, who wrestled their hearts out,” Manstedt said. “Fans really got into it. It was everything I had hoped it would be.” The area had a state champion as well. Twin Loup junior Ally Micheel took home the 152-pound title after defeating West Point-Beemer’s Brithany Cervantes with an 18-2 technical fall in the final. …. rest of the story at https://www.theindependent.com/sports/preps/first-girls-state-wrestling-tournament-a-success/article_21147b42-4874-11ea-a9e6-dbcf260ef86a.html?mc_cid=43214129f0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

#WOMENSWEDNESDAY: Maroulis, Conder, Ragan in Pan Am Olympic Qualifier Special Wrestle-off for a second time
BY GARY ABBOTT, USA WRESTLING
Video Playlist – 2016 Pan Am Olympic Qualifier Special Wrestle-offs
This Saturday, there will be a Special Wrestle-off for three spots on the U.S. women’s freestyle team that will compete at the 2020 Pan American Olympic Qualifier in Canada. In total, there will be eight National Team athletes competing in the Special Wrestle-off, including seven past World Team members, four World medalists, two World champions and an Olympic champion. For three of those competing in Marietta on Saturday, this is like deja-vu all over again. Just about four years ago, Helen Maroulis, Whitney Conder and Alli Ragan were part of a Special Wrestle-off for the 2016 Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier. Back in 2016, the USA Wrestling procedures allowed a past World medalist to challenge a 2015 World Team member in the non-qualified Olympic weight classes. Up for grabs were three weight classes, in which the winner would compete at the 2016 Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier in Frisco, Texas. …. story at https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2020/February/05/Second-straight-Pan-Am-Olympic-Wrestleoff-for-three-women?mc_cid=43214129f0&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

In Pennsylvania, they’ve just recently wrapped up district dual tournaments, with the state tournament taking place over the coming weekend. One of the surprises came in District XI. The Lehigh Valley district is home to a number of state powerhouses in AAA (the larger classification) such as Bethlehem Catholic, Nazareth, Northampton and Bethlehem Liberty. But we head to AA, where big-time programs Notre Dame-Green Pond and Saucon Valley squared off. The two teams had met twice prior, with Notre Dame taking both duals by a combined 28 points.  This time, however, it was different. …. rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/tw/PortalPost.jsp?postId=344316135&mc_cid=920b1cb2df&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Chandler’s Stefana Jelacic accomplishes rare feat at high school boys wrestling sectionals
Stefana Jelacic made history with female wrestlers who competed in the inaugural Arizona high school girls state championship tournament one year ago. The Chandler senior and reigning 118-pound girls state champion decided at the start of this season that wasn’t enough to cap off her high school wrestling career. On Saturday, Jelacic became the second female in state history to qualify for the boys championship tournament at the Division I Section I wrestling tournament at her team’s home gym. She could become the third female to win a medal in the Arizona high school boys wrestling state championship tournament. The first was Miyuu Yamamoto of Tempe Corona del Sol finished in sixth place in the 103 in 1993 and the second was Shauna Isbell of Flagstaff Coconino when she placed fourth in the 112 in 2009. After eschewing girls competitions all season to wrestle against boys only, Jelacic, whose duals record is 24-8, stood on the podium for second place after Chandler Basha junior Kayden Galarneau pinned her in that sectional’s 113 title match. …. rest of the story at https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/high-school/2020/02/08/chandlers-stefana-jelacic-arizona-high-school-wrestling/4704225002/?mc_cid=5d2199bc2e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

(Pennsylvania)
In PIAA wrestling, separation of church and state is getting more difficult by the hour
More than 20 years ago, neither Bethlehem Catholic nor the Allentown Diocese tried to stop diminutive soccer player Samantha Smith from potentially getting run over by a 250-pound rusher as the kicker for the Golden Hawks’ football team. She had a strong leg, she was qualified, she was allowed to play in games.
No problem.
Flash forward to the present, following an explosion of girls wrestling over the last decade, the Allentown Diocese and the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference still won’t budge on its stance that their boys cannot wrestle girls. Doesn’t matter if they’re the same weight. Perhaps if they were outfitted with shoulder pads and helmets? ….. rest of the story at https://www.mcall.com/sports/varsity/wrestling/mc-spt-piaa-2a-state-wrestling-20200210-55qpdht2cvdizmekcluor7iruy-story.html?mc_cid=5d2199bc2e&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Weekend Rundown: The biggest developments in 20 sentences

1. The clash of college wrestling titans lived up to the billing Friday night when Iowa overcame an Austin DeSanto injury-default defeat and a team-point deduction by winning six bouts to beat Penn State 19-17 in a wildly entertaining dual inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
2. Michael Kemerer was the star of the show for the Hawkeyes and turned the tide in Iowa’s favor with a scintillating 11-6 toppling of Mark Hall that came on the heels of a knockdown, drag-out, throw-or-be-thrown battle between Vincenzo Joseph and Alex Marinelli that tipped in 3. 3rd Season, Column 23; Iowants it ALL; SoCon News; and Random ramblings from Coast to Coast
Darth Vader has returned from the dead, folks and he’s rocking the Black and Gold. The Iowa Hawkeyes have awakened from a decade long slumber and are taking dead aim and no prisoners this season at what could become their 24th National Championship. The 2019-2020 Hawkeyes may yet stumble on their way to the top of the team podium in Minneapolis in March, but missteps by this squad are unlikely. Every single starter is ranked in the Top 10. They shut out not 1, not 2, but 3 teams this year and nearly broke the 200 point barrier in winning the Midlands tournament mid-season. And then there was that small matter of the match against Penn State the last day of January. Tom and Terry Brands team made it a night to remember for their extended family as the #1 Hawkeyes upended the 4x defending National champion Nittany Lions 19-17 in front of a crowd of nearly 15,000. Heroes and heartbreak were front and center for the home standing Hawkeyes as Iowa won 6 matches to Penn States 4 while losing 133LB chainsaw Austin Desanto. The #2 ranked Hawkeye went down twice in the 1st period and injury defaulted to Roman Bravo-Young, whom Desanto was unbeaten against in college competition. Analysis in every media format is everywhere about this match, from here the opinion is the match was much ado about….not that much. AMAZING wrestling that changed nothing. Iowa is still #1, Penn State is still #2, and they’re way in front of everyone else this year.  …. rest of the column at https://morewrestlingplease.wordpress.com/2020/02/04/3rd-season-column-23-iowants-it-all-socon-news-and-random-ramblings-from-coast-to-coast/?mc_cid=7d7b97b6b4&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

In Nebraska
Cadets make history at first girls state wrestling tourney
YORK — The Nebraska Wrestling Coaches Association fielded the first-ever girls state wrestling championships here Saturday, and the West Point-Beemer Cadet wrestling squad decided if they were going to keep score, the Cadets may as well win the thing. And that’s exactly what the team and longtime wrestling coach Ray Maxwell did in historic fashion. West Point-Beemer easily outdistanced runner-up Schuyler 190-101 on its way to the schools’ first-ever state hardware and the first state title in Nebraska for girls wrestling. “We knew we had a shot at winning this,” Maxwell said. “But being it was the first, you just don’t know what to expect. We are all so proud of what these girls accomplished.” Although it was a monumental day for the Cadets, it was also a monumental day for girls athletics in the state of Nebraska, according Ron Higdon, assistant director of the Nebraska School Activities Association. Higdon and NSAA executive director Jay Bellar were both in attendance at the first-ever meet. “This is just such a great opportunity for our female athletes throughout the entire state,” Higdon said. “In some of our smaller schools, all we offer during the winter season is basketball for the girls. Some of the bigger schools have swimming and diving, but basketball is it for a great many of other schools.” Higdon liked what he saw here in York. …. rest of the story at https://norfolkdailynews.com/sports/cadets-make-history-at-first-girls-state-wrestling-tourney/article_53bed89a-469d-11ea-86eb-d367cade650d.html?mc_cid=7d7b97b6b4&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
