GRAPPLING WITH CHANGE: Girls wrestlers take to the mats in droves across Colorado, the nation
On the verge of official sanctioning by Colorado High School Activities Association, girls wrestling explodes across state
When Ashley Jaramillo says wrestling is in her blood, she means it. Thanks to not only her father, but her mother as well, the junior at Vista PEAK Prep in Aurora has a strand in her DNA completely devoted to the sport. Jaramillo had passed on it up until last year — choosing other sports like volleyball, soccer and tennis — but once the push began to make girls wrestling an officially sanctioned high school sport in Colorado, she jumped on board. Now, she’s part of a wildfire sporting revolution that has created a much different landscape than the one known by her mom, Monique, who wrestled as a lone female in a virtually all-male sport at Denver’s Abraham Lincoln High School in the 1990s. “A big reason I got into it is because my mom was a wrestler in high school, my dad did it and my stepdad did it, so it kind of runs in the family,” Jaramillo said outside of the Vista PEAK wrestling room during practice Jan. 27. “My mom will tell me ‘When I wrestled it was completely different, I had to wrestle all boys because there were no other girls to wrestle. So she’s extremely excited that I get to be a part of this and she gets to do this journey with me. She’s my biggest support system.” The journey that Jaramillo and so many other girls across the country are on is one that has moved quickly and doesn’t appear to be stopping soon. Colorado will join a growing number of states across the country — 20 at latest count (plus Guam) with more on the way — when it officially sanctions girls wrestling in the 2020-21 winter season. It joins Unified Bowling and boys volleyball as a class of sanctioned sports that the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) hasn’t had since the late 1990s. … rest of the story at https://sentinelcolorado.com/sports/preps/grappling-with-change-girls-wrestlers-take-to-the-mats-in-droves-across-colorado-the-nation/?mc_cid=f21ebbee67&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Which seems strange to some people. “Everyone says, ‘You’ve got to give up cheerleading, you’re a wrestler now,'” Foeller said. “I just tell them that my cheerleading has helped me get to where I am as a wrestler — so I’m going to keep doing it.”

Foeller geared up for a run at a second successive state championship by rolling to three successive wins on Saturday in the Seckman Women’s Tournament in downtown Imperial. Local high school female wrestlers feel left out by the district
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A group of female high school athletes said they are being left out, and blame APS for limiting opportunities for their sport. Blood, sweat and tears are what it takes to be a female wrestler at Highland High School. “We practice every day for three hours, mostly six days a week,” wrestler Tatyenna Sanchez said. As their male counterparts headed off to the Metro Championships Friday afternoon, the girls were left behind. “Girls are not getting as many chances and opportunities to be on the mat,” Sanchez said. That’s because there is no girls division, forcing girls to compete against the boys as schools can only send one athlete per weight class. “When we only get to pick one person from that weight class, it is normally the guys,” wrestler Julia Messier said. “When a girl goes up against a guy, it is just not as fair because guys are naturally stronger.” Teams thought this would change after the NMAA sanctioned wrestling this past summer, but APS has not added a girls division to any existing tournament. “I just feel like we are not getting fair treatment,” Desirae Archuleta said. Archuleta and Santii Santiago from Atrisco Heritage Academy High School dream to wrestle in college. They said the lack of opportunities is hurting their futures. “They say they are giving us their support, but they are still trying to keep us under the boys and not giving us everything we need,” Santiago said. “The fact that they don’t have the opportunity to just see the competition that is out there feels somewhat degrading,” Santiago’s dad, Zerrick Ponder, said. “Just having some exposure is great, but we need something to put on a college resume. Colleges are looking for a metro champion and opportunities to face tougher competition in all aspects.”
APS argued that they have created five new open tournaments that have girls divisions. “It allows a coach to enter all the girls wrestling in the same weight class,” Director of Athletics Kenny Barreras said. “They all get a chance to wrestle, even if they are wrestling one another. It is about enhancing participation and growing the sport.” Wrestlers who spoke with KRQE News 13 said that is not enough. “We have earned our place and we are here to stay,” Messier said. “To not be able to show people that is a big disappointment.” APS said while there are more than 300 boy wrestlers in the district, there are only 47 girls. He said this is a transitional year, and they are continuing to review participation and consider adding events for girls in the coming years….. story at https://www.krqe.com/news/albuquerque-metro/local-high-school-female-wrestlers-feel-left-out-by-the-district/?mc_cid=1ee623c6f3&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Greensboro College Becomes First College in North Carolina to Offer Women’s Wrestling

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College will offer women’s wrestling as a varsity intercollegiate sport beginning in Fall 2020. It will be the first college or university in North Carolina to do so.
The proposal was approved Feb. 12 by President Lawrence D. Czarda, Ph.D., on the recommendation of Robin Daniel, interim director of athletics.
“This is a great opportunity for young women wrestlers, especially in the state of North Carolina,” said head wrestling coach Kevin Birmingham, who will coach both the men’s and the women’s teams. “The sport is really taking off at the high-school level, and where are those women going? I want them to come to Greensboro College.”
Greensboro College, which competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, began its men’s wrestling program in 2015. Costs to add a women’s team will be minimal, with space and equipment already on hand. Division III schools, typically among the smallest, do not offer athletic scholarships.
The NCAA has designated women’s wrestling as an “emerging sport,” one that it recognizes but for which it does not yet have sanctioned championships. Women’s wrestling has been an Olympic sport since 2004.
High-school girls’ wrestling is the fastest-growing girls’ sport in the country, particularly in the southeastern U.S. Nationally, the number of high school girls participating in wrestling grew from 804 in 1994 to 21,124 in 2019, according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Currently, 20 states have sanctioned women’s state wrestling championships.
A regional high school girls’ wrestling match this past weekend at the Greensboro Coliseum drew 180 competitors this year, up from 82 at the inaugural event in 2019.
Birmingham was named the Pride’s head wrestling coach in 2019 after joining the staff as an assistant coach in 2017. Previously he had coached at Green Hope High School in Cary, N.C., where three of his wrestlers reached the state championships, while his team made the state duals for the first time in six seasons. …. more information at https://portal.nwcaonline.com/articles/NWCA_News/Greensboro-College-Becomes-First-14-2-2020

Top 10 wrestlers who played in NFL; Top 10 NFL stars who were wrestlers

BY GARY ABBOTT, USA WRESTLING | JAN. 30, 2020,
PODCAST: How Wrestling Built Me featuring Stephen Neal
Wrestling and football have been linked, going way back in time. On the high school and youth levels, many football players also wrestled. In some instances, there are college athletes who competed in both football and wrestling, much more in the earlier years, but it is still going on. Just in 2019, Fresno State football running back Josh Hokit became a Div. I All-American in wrestling. It can be done.
During the 2013 year when it was recommended that wrestling no longer be on the Olympic program, USA Wrestling did extensive research on wrestlers who competed in the NFL. We compiled a huge list, something that helped us bring more attention to wrestling in the USA as we battled our way back into the Olympic Games.
There are two ways to look at this thing. Who was the best wrestler, who also competed in the NFL? Who was the best football player, who also wrestled? For fun, we will provide a top 10 list for both questions. (Please remember that this is just one man’s opinion).
Best Wrestlers who played in the NFL
We have a lot to choose from, including a World champion, an Olympian, and a few NCAA wrestling champions and some multiple NCAA All-Americans. Clearly, the top choice is 1999 World champion and two-time NCAA champion Stephen Neal, who won three Super Bowl rings as an offensive lineman for the New England Patriots. Neal won his NCAA titles for Cal-Bakersfield.
Right there at No. 2 is three-time NCAA Div. I champion and three-time NCAA Div. II champion Carlton Haselrig, who played on the offensive line for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Haselrig wrestled for Pitt-Johnstown.
Both Neal and Haselrig are Distinguished Members of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and neither of them played college football. 1964 Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler Bob Pickens, who played on the offensive line for the Chicago Bears, gets in at No. 3. Next is two-time NCAA wrestling champion Jim Nance of Syracuse, a running back for the New England Patriots. Add in NCAA champions Curly Culp of Arizona State (who is also in the NFL Hall of Fame) and Art Baker of Syracuse.
We included two-time NCAA wrestling All-Americans Bob Golic (Notre Dame), Charlie Getty (Penn State) and Steve Sefter (Penn State), and Oklahoma State wrestler John Ward, who reached third at the NCAA Wrestling Championships. We also have a few Honorable Mention wrestlers in the NFL who were NCAA Div. I All-Americans. I know many great wrestlers on the high school level may have only played football in college, but we have to give props to those guys who were All-American college wrestlers, regardless of how good some of the others were in high school.
TOP 10 WRESTLERS WHO PLAYED IN NFL
1. Stephen Neal, New England Patriots OL** – 1999 World freestyle champion, 2x NCAA wrestling champion (Cal-Bakersfield) 4th 1966, 2nd 1997, 1st 1998, 1st 1999
2. Carlton Haselrig, Pittsburgh Steelers OL** – 3x NCAA Div. I champion, 3x NCAA Div. II champion (Pitt-Johnstown), Div. I champion (1987-1989), Div. II champion (1987-1989), 3rd 1986 Div. II

The connection between Penn wrestling and engineering is one that runs decades deep
Eleven of the team’s 38 wrestlers are engineers
Studying engineering at a school like Penn is no easy feat by itself, but a select group of wrestlers somehow makes it work every year along with their time on the mat. Penn wrestling has historically been closely tied to the School of Engineering and Applied Science, with a significant number of team members drawn to the rigorous yet well-renowned programs it offers. … story at https://www.thedp.com/article/2020/01/penn-wrestling-engineering-connection-artalona-antrassian-rodzianko-springman?mc_cid=efd3bacf82&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Alex Thomsen feels at home with NU wrestling, looks to finish season strong
Redshirt freshman and Iowa native Alex Thomsen had a traditional, yet compelling path to Nebraska wrestling. He was recruited hard by Nebraska from the start, in particular by associate head coach Bryan Snyder. Thomsen was eventually chased by successful in-state programs such as Iowa and Iowa State, but it was too late, as he had already made his decision.  “I just felt really at home at Nebraska, like I belonged, that they wanted me there,” Thomsen said. “I knew I would have the chance to grow as a wrestler in Lincoln.” Despite being from Neola, Iowa, Thomsen has a connection to Nebraska as his high school head coach Joe Stephens wrestled at Nebraska from 1992 to 1995. This did not impact Thomsen’s decision to come to Nebraska, he said, and Stephens allowed him to make his own choice without guiding him in any particular direction. …. story at http://www.dailynebraskan.com/sports/alex-thomsen-feels-at-home-with-nu-wrestling-looks-to/article_b8e66afa-423b-11ea-9a40-5b50eadbd53d.html?mc_cid=efd3bacf82&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Multi-Divisional Insider: Grand View’s Hansen on the march toward NAIA history
It was 2002 and Evan Hansen was a Kindergartner sitting in front of his television watching the NCAA Division I wrestling finals. The culmination of that evening was Iowa State’s Cael Sanderson capping off a perfect 159-0 career with his fourth NCAA championship. “I turned to my parents and said, ‘I want to be like that guy,’ and here we are,” Hansen said. Seventeen years later, Hansen has been a lot like Sanderson on the wrestling mat. With one home match left in his stellar career at Grand View University in Des Moines — Feb. 7 against Graceland University — Hansen is in the latter stages of one of the most impressive careers in NAIA wrestling history. Already a three-time national champion, Hansen has a shot in March to become just the eighth NAIA wrestler, and first since Brock Gutches of Southern Oregon, to win four titles. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?postId=292705135&mc_cid=0c135afe6f&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Coal City native Noah Adams making noise with 24-0 record, No. 2 national ranking
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — With nineteen wins and an NCAA Tournament appearance in his freshman campaign last winter, Independence High School grad Noah Adams authored a strong opening season to his WVU wrestling career. In his redshirt freshman season, Adams posted a 19-15 record and was seeded 20th in the NCAA Tournament, winning one match at nationals. “It was definitely the biggest tournament I had wrestled in,” Adams said. It was not like anything I had done before. I think it was a great experience for me last year to get there and see what it is like. Now going into this year, I feel like I will be a little more prepared for that environment. I think I can go up there and create a lot of noise.” As the calendar turns to February, Adams has created a great deal of noise in college wrestling circles. He is undefeated in 24 bouts. After starting the season with little national acclaim, Adams checked in at No. 2 in the initial NCAA coaches’ panel rankings last week in his 197-pound weight class. … rest of the story at http://wvmetronews.com/2020/01/30/coal-city-native-noah-adams-making-noise-with-24-0-record-no-2-national-ranking/?mc_cid=0c135afe6f&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
