InterMat Rewind: Looking back at first college All-Star event

TDR Notes ; We lament as well the lack of an All-Star Meet this season as there are fond memories of attending previous events.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
For more than a half-century, the NWCA All-Star Classic has been an annual event on the college wrestling calendar going back to 1967. Until this year. Last month, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced that the 2019 All-Star event would not take place this fall.
Here’s how the NWCA announcement described the event: “Typically serving as the kick-off to the collegiate season, The All-Star Classic has matched up numerous national champions and All-Americans through the years, including many No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchups.”
Why no NWCA All-Star Classic this fall?
Here’s the explanation provided by Mike Moyer, NWCA Executive Director:
“On behalf of the NWCA Board of Directors, I wanted to let you know that we have decided to suspend the NWCA All-Star Classic for the 2019/20 year. Over the past 6 months, we have received some terrific ideas and concepts from our constituents on how we can ‘revitalize’ the All-Star Classic to meet the unique needs of our college wrestlers, coaches, and fans. Some of the proposed ideas and concepts required some extensive vetting which has made it impractical to still host the All-Star Classic this Fall…” InterMat thought the time was right to take a look back at the very first NWCA All-Star event — the 1967 East-West Classic — which took place in early April of that year.
Not always the kickoff for the college wrestling season
Although the All-Star event has been a fixture of college wrestling since 1967, it hasn’t always been the season-opening event. In fact, the NWCA All-Star Classic has been the kickoff event for only a decade-and-a-half … going back to 2005, when the event made its first appearance at the beginning of the collegiate season when held at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in metropolitan St. Louis. In the early years — 1967 through 1971 — the All-Stars had been the capstone event of the college wrestling season, taking place a week or two after the conclusion of the NCAA wrestling championships.  Rest of this story of reflection at http://intermatwrestle.com/articles/22530?fbclid=IwAR2gkWX2q9zVhXvDMU_BxE_SfubAoR3ZAXk8UBLNPLqX4kb3PMDJdKtbgXU

ES North wrestler Avia Bibeau’s dream of girls wrestling only girls in Pennsylvania still just that Bob Bibeau spread out cheerleading mats on the living room floor of the family’s Bushkill ranch home to teach his son, Robbie, basic wrestling moves. Bibeau and his wife, Ann-Marie, dragged daughters Avia and Andi to all of Robbie’s midget wrestling tournaments. Eventually, the two girls grew tired of gymnastics and cheerleading and being reduced to spectators as they spent their weekends sitting on uncomfortable gym bleachers. They wanted to do more with their time. They wanted to wrestle. “I made them a deal,” Bob Bibeau said. “I told them that I’d take them to a tournament at Warrior Run High School, we’d see how they do and take it from there.” Rest of the story at https://www.mcall.com/sports/varsity/wrestling/mc-spt-avia-bibeau-high-school-girls-wrestling-20191111-7c6xxfqa3fa2jgped7fhkvdd5u-story.html?mc_cid=8eac02cb54&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

MAT TALK ONLINE – SHort Time Shots

Short Time Shots: 11-09-19
Ever go to a trampoline park? Yeah. You’ll feel it the next day. With a pretty good slate of college wrestling going on Saturday, I’m sure you’re going to feel it too. I’m Jason Bryant and this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from the world of wrestling.
Dual Meets:
Most of the key action took place at the Northeast Duals, but before we get there, No. 15 Pittsburgh hosted Campbell in a dual where the Fighting Camels felt they had chance to pull the upset and potentially get ranked for the first time in school history. They’ll have to wait. The Panthers won eight of 10 bouts in a 28-6 win. There were notable individual matches, though as Pitt’s Micky Phillipi downed Noah Gonser 6-2 at 133, while freshman Cole Matthews pinned Josh Heil at 141 pounds. At 165, Pitt’s Jake Wentzel majored Quentin Perez, who was coming off a solid effort at the Southeast Open. Campbell did pick up one notable upset, as red hot Andrew Morgan beat Nino Bonaccorsi 11-8 at 184. Morgan fell behind early, but rallied with a second period reversal and set of four nearfall points to tie the match going into the third. He added an escape and another takedown to pull out the win. Demetrius Thomas of Pittsburgh topped Jere Heino 10-3 at 285. Wow, there was actually a lot more to that dual than the score indicates.
Now, we get to the Northeast Duals and I’m going to start off with the highest ranked dual between any teams in the mix, and that was in Division II where No. 2 St. Cloud State spanked No. 1 Pitt-Johnstown 31-6. Rest of the story and audio at http://www.mattalkonline.com/podcast/shots/short-time-shots-11-09-19/?mc_cid=f628750264&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Short Time Shots: 11-11-19
November 11 is a day that’s extremely memorable for me and the career path I chose. You see, 11 years ago, Kyle Klingman and I kicked off our very first podcast, Wrestling 411. By the way, I’m Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from around the world of wrestling. So back to the story – It was a J Robinson idea housed within a brand called Media Sports Productions, the acronym befitting its home base, Minneapolis. This was the gig I left Pennsylvania for. J Rob and Wade Schalles, wooed me over the phone from my newly purchased row home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I saw the pay increase, the chance to continue to further my goals in broadcasting and a chance to get a fresh start in a new area. Wade left shortly after Kyle arrived from Iowa and me from Pennsylvania. Ultimately, we got left holding the bag with little of the start-up money to work with and Kyle and I limped through a very tough year, one that put both of us at odds with one another and put both of our futures in the sport in doubt. Kyle and I talked about this a year ago, when we hit the 10-year anniversary of our foray into podcasting and failed television production. Our first guest was Tom Brands. The audio was terrible, our rapport wasn’t there and it might have been one of the worst shows either of us ever did. Even though I linked it here, don’t listen.
We sat at Augsburg’s KAUG radio studios – Kyle knew this was doomed from the start. I thought so to, only I held on to the illusion that we could actually pull this off.  Rest of the story and audio link at http://www.mattalkonline.com/podcast/shots/short-time-shots-11-11-19/?mc_cid=8eac02cb54&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Second-Ranked Wabash Wrestling Takes New Approach To Upcoming Season

The Wabash wrestling team opens its 2019-20 season Saturday with a slightly different approach. The Little Giants enter the season ranked second in the nation in the preseason National Wrestling Coaches Association poll. Wabash sent six wrestlers to the 2019 NCAA Division III National Tournament with three earning All-America awards. The Little Giants tied for ninth place overall at the tournament marking the first time since 2014 the team finished outside of the top-five places. That has Wabash head coach Brian Anderson and his staff looking at the overall process for this season. “We want to get back in the hunt for a trophy,” Anderson said. “The last two years we’ve kind of been on the outside looking in. It’s always better to come away from the national tournament with a big trophy in your hand. I think our guys want that feeling back this year. “To do that our approach needs to change. We need to not be so focused on the end results but more on the process that gets us there. That’s what we’ve been preaching at the start of the season. We want to take everything one day at a time and stay focused on the short-term goals. That will allow us to accomplish our long-term goals. We’re attacking the whole season that way.” Thirty-four upperclassmen make up the veteran portion of the Wabash roster for the 2019-20 season. Leading the way for the Little Giants is 2019 174-pound national champion Darden Schurg. A two-time All-American and the 2019 DIII Wrestler of the Year, he enters the year as the top-ranked wrestler in the weight class and one of seven Little Giants earning spots in the NWCA preseason individual rankings. Conel ready for fresh, healthy start with Nittany Lions
Less than a year ago, Kyle Conel was staring down a daunting shoulder surgery and quite possibly the end of his wrestling career. On Tuesday, the former Kent State standout stood near the door of Penn State’s Lorenzo Wrestling Complex, in front of a throng of reporters wearing a big grin, his arms crossed as he took stock of his new home.
One thing has stood out to the newcomer who arrived at Penn State as a graduate transfer earlier this year. The Nittany Lions’ room is fun. Conel looked out over a row of exercise bikes where a handful of his new teammates were setting up a game of battleball on the mats.  “There are a ton of smiles,” Conel said. “It just reminds me of how much fun I had back in high school.” And Penn State fans will remember Conel. They rooted for him as if he was one of their own two years ago at the NCAA Championships. There, Conel made a name for himself with a stirring run of upsets, including a pin of Ohio State’s Kollin Moore. That win helped Conel take third in the tournament. It also helped propel the Nittany Lions to the team title. Five Things To Watch for in DII Wrestling This Weekend
Last week may have opened the NCAA Division II wrestling season, but this week really starts kicking things into high gear. There are great Opens taking place as well as some very good duals. With so much to take in, here are five things you absolutely do not want to miss.
1) Kaufman-Brand/Bayly Open
A host of teams will descend upon St Louis this weekend to take part in the annual Maryville Kaufman-Brand/Bayly Open. From here on out, I will simply call it the MKBBO because it has a nice ring to it (COPYRIGHT!). Nine Division II teams will mix with teams from Division I, Division III, and the NAIA for a shot at winning one of the biggest open tournaments this season. Five of the nine Division II teams are ranked in the TOM top 25. We will get to see revamped lineups from fourth-ranked McKendree University and finally find out what fifth-ranked Lindenwood is going to do at the logjam between 133 and 157. I am wondering if coach Rollins will just enter all of them at 149 and see if he can make me lose my mind. The MKBBO will have visitors from Illinois, Mizzou, Purdue, and SIUE that will be carrying the banner for Division I. Incredibly, this tournament has traveled from the “other school” to its new home at Maryville. The legacy that Mike Denney built at the “other school” continues to grow at Maryville and we should all witness and applaud its continued success. The action will be Trackwrestling.
2) MEGA DUAL!!!!!
Come one come all to witness a battle of giants in Division II taking place at the site of one of the most famous wars in antiquity. Top-ranked Pitt-Johnstown and third-ranked St Cloud State are squaring off in Troy!  Rest of the story at https://news.theopenmat.com/college-wrestling-news/five-things-to-watch-for-in-dii-wrestling-this-weekend/75310?mc_cid=4e11e7aebd&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

‘A ton of hammers in here’: Augsburg’s new women’s wrestling team kicks off season
When Augsburg University’s women’ wrestling team begins its season on Saturday, it does so with a completely blank slate. The program is the only varsity collegiate wrestling team for women in Minnesota, and it’s new this year. Saturday’s competition at Waldorf University in Iowa will be the team’s first. Of the 10 Augsburg wrestlers, most are first-years, including Vayle-rae Baker from Pennsylvania. “I feel like it’s my art,” Baker said of wrestling. “It’s what I love to do. I get to have my own style, I get to have my own performances when I go out and wrestle. And it’s the bonds that you make, and the connections. It’s like a family.” Baker’s teammate, sophomore Bel Snyder, grew up in a wrestling family but initially played basketball at Wadena-Deer Creek High School in central Minnesota. A sport of their own

A high school wrestler from Kansas spent four years fighting to give girls the OPPORTUNITY to compete in an official state sport.
MCPHERSON, Kan.
She was awkward at sports that involved rackets, balls or any kind of equipment. And the middle school girls she considered friends picked on her instead. Finally fed up with being bullied, Mya Kretzer looked for a new crowd in seventh grade and found it in wrestling, a sport that ran through her family like strong winds whip through Kansas. She loved wrestling’s demands: the discipline and commitment required to control an opponent using only skill, technique and grit. And if she had to practice and compete against sweaty boys, the chance to wrestle was worth it, she decided. But no matter how much she improved, Kretzer soon realized she would never have a realistic chance to become a state champion. She could compete and enter any tournament she chose. But because Kansas didn’t recognize girls’ wrestling as an official sport, she would have to beat the best boys in her weight class to win a state title — a virtual impossibility given the greater strength and muscle mass boys tend to develop as they get older. What girls needed, she believed, was to have a sport of their own. Achieving that goal came to define her high school wrestling career.
